Now That's What I Call Music! 33 aka Now 33 was the spring release of 1996. It sold substantially less than it's predecessor Now 32 by 600,000 copies, which was exactly the number it achieved in sales. Perhaps this was due to the heavy inclusion of music within the 90's Brit-pop genre from artists like Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Cast and Supergrass. However, there was still plenty of other genres to choose from across the volume.
This was the first appearance in the series for Terrorvision and also Lighthouse Family who went on to make many more appearances in the following few years. It was the only time in the series to have appearances from Babylon Zoo, The Connells, Lush, Luniz, Kaliphz, Gat Decor, Gusto, Ken Doh, Dubstar, St. Etienne, Dreadzone, Goldbug and Technohead.
Notable omissions include the #1's from Michael Jackson Earth Song (6 weeks too) and the final single from Take That before their 10 year hiatus. How Deep Is Your Love was a UK #1 single for 3 weeks in early 1996. Also missing was the debut single by 3T Anything which became the 12th biggest selling single of 1996.
Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good I like the use of the water and reflections. Another pretty landscape scene was used and to good effect. May have suited a summer release better, but otherwise not bad at all.
Disc 1 Favourite: Radiohead Street Spirit (Fade Out) I actually got into this in later years thanks to my brothers repeated plays of this song. I've seen Radiohead live and they were superb. One of the best British bands of my generation.
Disc 2 Favourite: Lighthouse Family Lifted An uplifting smooth groove from a major 90's artist. Easy listening at its best.
Overall Rating: 6/10 Good I think overall it's a good effort to create a compilation of music that people were listening to at the time, and aside from the fact it only offered 2 UK #1s, the entire tracklist peaked within the Top 30 and that's usually what's most important to me to see the highest charting hits feature in the series and not massive flops. Bit of a shame to miss out with Take That to make it at least 3 #1s, but they would feature again in the series many years later.

Into 1996 we go then & this is a solid edition after not being too fussed about it initially. The 2 Oasis songs are the clear highlights of the album but there's a lot of decent britpop on that first Disc from the likes of Blur, Supergrass & Pulp's best ever song (and winner of the Rate as I'll post below). That Status Quo track gets a lot of hate (and finished rank bottom in the Rate) but like it's title suggests it's just a whole load of fun!
As per the norm Disc 2 is the superior side on this edition but it's a lot closer than previous ones. I love Lifted (the 2nd best Lighthouse Family song after High), Give Me A Little More Time (Gabrielle had loads of great 90s pop songs) & 2 fantastic dance songs from Gat Decor & Gusto, both of which still get heaps of sample usage to this very day. The highlight of Disc 2 without a doubt however is the quite bonkers Technohead happy hardcore song, truly a one of a kind hit at the time!
Artwork is solid again, the blue sky & clouds teasing the upcoming Summer months (don't remember the Summer of '96 that well mind, was it a particularly good one older members?) so a 7/10 for me there. And I'd have to match that with regards to the overall rating, quite a lot of good stuff to be found on this edition!
