Continuing the Madonna vs another artist polls, this time we go to one of the biggest artists around currently to have been directly inspired by Madge in terms of sound and visuals. Lady Gaga arrived on the scene as a futuristic Madonna but the lead single to her second studio album seemed to look back at the late 80s Madonna we all know and love. Lyrically, Born This Way is very similar to Madonna's anthem Express Yourself - both sing about loving yourself and owning it. But it was the actual sound of the single that had people talking, it sounds scarily familiar to M's song and it had people shouting "copy cat" from the skies. Madonna herself was quite taken aback by it, performing the song in one of her tours and leading it into 'She's Not Me' - a very blatant and catty dig at Ms Germanotta. But what do you think, which love-yourself anthem is superior? Was it ok for Gaga to recreate the pride anthem for a new generation with clear throwbacks to Madonna's song? The original from Madge or the counter-part released by Lady Gaga more than 20 years after? Vote for your favourite one in the poll and comment in the thread below! Also discuss any other favourite songs or lyrics that relate to these.

Express Yourself. While I do love BTW, I've always felt it's message a bit forced and kinda shoved down your throat.

Express Yourself. While I do love BTW, I've always felt it's message a bit forced and kinda shoved down your throat. That's how I feel, they're both very good but BTW is a lot more blatant and "forced" like you say. Having said that I might just prefer it especially because it had such an impact on me at the time of release I'll listen to both on repeat and see though ~ |

'Born This Way' for me actually, and by quite a margin! The main factor is the how the songs sound and I find the instrumental to 'Born This Way' really energetic and striking, opposed to that of 'Express Yourself' which just seems too slow for what is considered an anthem. I don't find the lyrics pretentious like some do; in fact I find it impressive how so much fits into the lyrics of a pop song. It's hard to deny the Madonna inspiration (I've always found the rap to sound somewhat similar to that of 'Vogue' too) but that fails to weaken the song for me. Also, credit where it's due, there was innovation in the sense she performed the "gangnam style" dance move before PSY.
I do like 'Express Yourself', but it's always been one of very few of the Madonna classics that I've not really felt the same love for. I've always appreciated how many different meanings can be attached to the song, whereas 'Born This Way' is quite obvious and focused, and the video is so impressive and ambitious. |

One is an uplifting anthem about self empowerment and never taking second best. The other is a trite rehash of that song masquerading as some kind of life mantra, but actually being lyrically borderline offensive at points and musically very lazy. But you already knew that.
Basically Born This Way is pandering bollocks, whereas Express Yourself is the real deal. In my opinion (your honour). Quite aside from the content/message, Express Yourself also wins, it's so much more uplifting and rousing and genuinely anthemic. |

Born This Way isn't even one of Gaga's best but I do prefer it out of these too, much stronger hooks and just way catchier. I do enjoy Express Yourself (used to be in my Madonna top 5) but not so much anymore.

I've never been a huge fan of Madonna, whereas I've loved GaGa from the very beginning. For me, Born This Way is massively catchy, great to dance to and it's quite significant to me as it was released during a special time in my life and I'm a sentimental fool. Express Yourself is a good song but I would never choose to listen to it.

Born This Way although incredibly similar to Express Yourself, is the stronger track to me

I'm a bit surprised Born this Way is winning here. I like it but Express Yourself is so good!

There are more Gaga fans than Madonna fans on here, which is sure to UNDULY INFLUENCE the result.
