I'm so excited to see this! The cast is amazing and it's one of my favourite musicals. wub.gif w00t.gif

CHRISTINE BARANSKI

MERLY STREEP

That's all I needed to be SOLD. Even Chris Pine and supermegathunderc*nt James Cordon can't dampen my excitement.

Saw this last night. I enjoyed it - though it was far from perfect. Some really excellent moments (and great songs 'it was your fault' was a highlight).

Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, and the two kids were all brilliant. Chris Pine was funny, Meryl was Meryl, Billy Magnussen had an incredible behind. But James Corden was TERRIBLE. He ruined a lot moments for me.

I liked this but the 2nd half really lets it down I think. However the first hour is brilliant. Anna and Emily were great and Meryl was fantastic. Her first scene and song in the bakery was amazing. She has some genuinely funny moments, as does Emily.

However, James Corden was just appalling. What a peculiar casting choice. He's the weakest actor and singer by a mile.

I saw it yesterday too. I agree with all of above, however the boy playing Jack had some awkward singing moments. laugh.gif Anna, Emily and Meryl stole the film for me and the girl playing Little Red Riding Hood did an excellent job. I found Chris Pine's singing a bit awkward and I would have liked some more Rapunzel moments.

James Cordon was horrific. I didn't find him believable at all. Also the fact we were to believe that he managed to get Emily Blunt as a wife laugh.gif drama.gif

Edit: I just found out that Sophia Grace creature was meant to play Red Riding Hood drama.gif sick2.gif

I thought the second half was much, MUCH better. Perhaps because it struck a much better and more cinematic balance between singing and dialogue (for me the first half was a total slog because it was 85% singing). Meryl was hamming it up as per, but it totally worked here, as one would expect. More Baranski than I expected too and obv she reveled in the role, which is essentially her playing the archetypical Christine Baranski role.

Musically it was a bit rubbish, only Agony, Stay With Me and Last Midnight are worthy of repeat listening and some of them bordered on actually being awful, namely anytime Jack opened his mouth to sing. I think perhaps I set my expectations too high, but I ended up being quite disappointed by it. It's probably between a 6 and a 7 for me, but I'll plump for 6.5 to split the difference.

He is actually surprisingly good, probably because it's easy to believe him as a sleazy, philandering douche. His singing voice isn't all that, but it works quite well I think.

^ Yeah I'd agree there

And here. tongue.gif

I didn't expect to love this as much as I did! My interest waned a bit after the curses had been lifted and it was the section with the female giant but up until then it was fabulous. I don't dislike James Corden the way everyone else seems to so I didn't have a problem there and I liked that it was mostly singing. Emily Blunt was my highlight, she had a lot of the humour and Anna Kendrick is a big favourite of mine.

Wouldn't mind seeing it again and would love to see it on stage! (a couple of girls on the way out were talking about how the stage show is 3 hours and quite a bit was cut out in the movie so I'd be interested in seeing the full thing)

Apparently in the stage show the two princes grow tired of Rapunzel and Cinderella and say they have fallen in love with two sleeping maidens in the woods. Who turn out to be Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Apparently Jake Gyllenhaal was supposed to have Billy's role but pulled out last minute. Thank goodness for that as the only film I have seen with him in it (Prince of Persia) was dreadful

Say what?! I haven't seen POP(and don't want to) but Jake Gyllenhaal is an absolutely fantastic actor - you must have seen more of his films Cam! Watch Brokeback, Jarhead, Donnie Darko, The Good Girl, Nightcrawer, Prisoners, Zodiac. Even give his better than average films like Source Code and Love and Other Drugs And End Of Watch. They're ALL better than Prince of Persia.

That being said I have no idea if he can sing?

A lot of people are going to see this and are.. ohmy.gif .. walking out because they didn't know it was a musical.
To be honest, I'm not surprised. The commercials over here show no mention of singing or that it's based on the musical.
The clips in the commercial just show dialogue, it's a little bit deceiving laugh.gif

Anyway, I saw it and wanted to love it but I was left feeling a little bit underwhelmed.
The clear highlights in the movie are the 3 female leads Meryl, Emily & Anna. I was half hoping they would change the story and have it be the baker that dies instead of his wife.
James Corden was bad. I'm not his biggest fan anyway but seriously..
I'm not sure what kinda dirt he has on people but how on earth he managed to land a leading role in this is astonishing!
He gives an okay performance at best. They really couldn't find anyone else better suited to play this role on screen?! I'm not having it.

It just seemed to go on and on. I ended up wiki-ing what happened in the story just because I was so bored after the first hour.
So cue my disappointment when the two princes don't end up with Snow White & Sleeping Beauty Damn you Disney!

I absolutely loved this and thought it was an amazing musical wub.gif
Meryl was amaizng as always and Emily was fantastic- she deserved an Oscar nomination. Anna Kendrick was also amazing. I loved the songs, the characters, the plot and I also thought Cordon was very good ohmy.gif

I loved this! The singing was pretty good from everyone involved and I loved the interlinking of all the fairytales. I was very upset that the Baker's Wife died especially as I love the actor in everything she does. The children were a tad annoying and could have done with Rapunzel in the final section of the film to even out the imbalance of children present. Anna Kendrick was excellent as always (her "I actually enjoy cleaning sometimes" line killed me!) The ensemble in general were great though; Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine (whose song with Billy Magnussen was hilarious), Christine Baranski and Lucy Punch were all excellent too!

"Into the Woods" was released in my country's cinemas New Year's day and it was one of the most hype films three months ago. "Into the Woods" received three Golden Globe nominations for "Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy", "Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical" and "Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, Musical or Comedy" from which it did not win any of them. However, it received two nominations for the Bafta awards in the categories for "Best Costume Design" and "Best Makeup and Hair" and was proposed by the Academy Awards for three awards. They include "Best Supporting Actress", "Best Production Design" and "Best Costume Design". I expected that I would see one of the best films of last year, but eventually I was not satisfied with the overall content.
"Into the Woods" is based on the homonymous play by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim which had won three Tony Awards out of the ten categories which was nominated in 1988! So, the cinematic adaptation was almost certain to take place sometime. The movie director is Rob Marshall who has worked with musicals in the past, like "Chicago" and "Nine". He did a great job in "Into the Woods", which was very impressive visually. It had atmospheric scenery, excellent photography, elaborate montages and nice costumes. Yet the scenario was naive and corny while some pieces of musical were quite annoying. That's why some spectators in the cinema hall completely lost their control in the last half hour of the movie after loudly talking to each other or mockingly clapping when a new song would start. The truth is that "Into the Woods" is a film for a very specific audience and it makes sense not being liked by many people because they are not used to these kinds of movies. The film was made for artistic and commercial reasons. So, it could have been shorter so that it would be more bearable for the whole audience. However, I believe that many people went to see it because of the nominations it received in all glamour events but also for the amazing cast that includes renowned and much loved actors.
"Into the Woods" is a very successful movie in the Box Office as it is in the top ten of the most commercial musicals ever! However, I don't think that it has also been in the top ten of the preferences of viewers regarding musicals since it has received a moderate average score on IMDb (6,3). Personally, I found it intolerable and burdensome in some parts and asked desperately to finish during the last ten minutes. I regard very tasteless most tracks that played and the only thing that saves this movie is the very remarkable production.
