BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ Rating David Bowie's Top 50 Hits!

Posted by: Taylor Jago 16th January 2016, 10:14 PM

Over the course of his over half a century long career, David Bowie, born David Robert Jones had 69 top 50 hits, from 1969 to 2016, from Space Oddity to Lazarus.

Following the sad news of his death last Sunday, we are remembering him and all of his fantastic songs.

But out of the 69 which made it into the top 50, which one is the best? That is what Buzzjack will be deciding over the course of this competition.

As a side note, I'm not sure Fame '90, Under Pressure (Rah Mix) should be included as they are remixes of other top 50 hits. Also, Tin Machine/Maggie's Farm (Live), You Belong in Rock 'n' Roll and Baby Universal are included, but those were as part of Tin Machine and not as a solo artist, so I'll let you decide whether they should be included.

You can give up to three 11s and up to three -1s (you probably won't need them though) and decimal scores are allowed. No -0.5s or 10.5 however.

You have 3 weeks to get in your rates. Closes on 7th February, 18:00.

A great excuse to go back and listen to some of the classics! I'll listen to these tomorrow, some I've not heard in years.

Posted by: HausofTroye 17th January 2016, 12:14 AM

Oh gosh I will be doing this! I have become obsessed with his magic.

Modern Love is my favourite atm

Posted by: Joe. 17th January 2016, 12:43 AM

For anyone interested, I've made a playlist with all the songs on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/joey56/playlist/7ydlqVtyls4sa8eok64H4a There's a couple I couldn't find including Peace on Earth and1 or 2 at the very end. I've made it collaborative though so if you find them, add them!

Mess that Changes never made the top 40?! I would have given that a good score. Also shame Lazarus didn't do it this week, it would have been quite fitting to include it.

Posted by: Colm 17th January 2016, 12:53 AM

I was just at a tribute night where I heard a lot of tracks that I hadn't heard in a while. I'll be voting in this for sure.

Posted by: Severin 17th January 2016, 10:14 AM

Is there a reason we're not including Baal?

Posted by: popchartfreak 17th January 2016, 10:28 AM

Cat People (the Giorgio Moroder soundtrack version) is missing..so added in here, and it's Arnold Layne the old Pink Floyd song. I Could nitpick about the 1975 version of John I'm Only Dancing which was the listed first track of the double A side, but the 1972 version double A I think was an alternate version of the original single and that's certainly the version I was charting high not the much less good plastic soul version.

I'd also prefer to see classic essentially Bowie top 40 tracks in place of the various remixes though:

All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople
The Man Who Sold The World - Lulu
Changes - David Bowie (part of the appeal of buying the 1969 reissue was it was an EP essentially, with Changes on it)

and if we disregard the rubbish streaming charts, this week's actual SALES chart top 40 has Changes and Lazarus in it, so I'd suggest dropping the remix of Under Pressure and Fame in favour of those two. All previous chart positions (bar Where Are We Now) are sales charts, some of them during low-selling periods lower than current downloads. tongue.gif

Of course I'm biased....

I'd like to include these too! Top 40 is a good cap but these are some of his biggest most iconic songs.

Wasn't that a EP?
Actually, it peaked at No°29 on the Singles Chart, so I'll include it.

As for Changes and Lazarus, I'll just change this to include top 50 hits instead.

However, I wouldn't include songs which were only written by David Bowie, or songs which are covers of David Bowie which went in the top 40. Having a writing credit on a song and performing on a song are two different things.

Also, do we include the Tin Machine songs, Fame '90 and Under Pressure (Rah Mix) or not?

Where Are We Now? was on a sale-only chart. It was at #6 in January 2013.

Quite a few of my favourites clearly didn't chart either - especially from Heathen & Reality.

An astonishing piece

Was Suffragette City not a single?

I don't want to meddle too much but how many singles/key tracks are missing this way? Severin, would you know?

Posted by: dandy* 17th January 2016, 01:16 PM

And just how did Magic Dance not chart?!!! 😮😮😮😮😮

Posted by: HausofTroye 17th January 2016, 01:52 PM

I do not envy Taylor for having to select and whittle down which tracks to include but it did initially seem like some KEY ones were missing and that's coming from someone who is a recent convert to his music not a longterm fan! 'Suffragete City' probably being the main one now that 'Changes' has been added ohmy.gif

I'd say Tin Machine is a band, Bowie was very clear he wanted to work as part of a band. When listing Paul McCartneys greatest hits they tend to include Wings (which had variable Paul McCartney & Wings credits) but not The Beatles. Similarly Genesis and Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. The Killers and Brandon Flowers etc...

Remixes are not entirely Bowie, they are other people's work using Bowie's original (with his blessing), but Loving The Alien could also fall into that category if it is (41 peak).

so, Lazarus 09
Changes 09

Baals' Hymn 03
Alabama Song 05 (Ive downgraded!)

(both top 40)

When The Wind Blows 07

(top 50)

any not allowed just ignore laugh.gif

All The Young Dudes
Suffragette City
Slow Burn
New Killer Star
Looking For Water
Blackstar
The Man Who Sold The World
The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
Love Is Lost (Remix)
Shadow Man
I'm Afraid Of Americans

...but that's purely because I'm quite fond of them, I can understand if I'm trying to be a little more objective about it why they're not in there...

Posted by: Colm 17th January 2016, 03:10 PM

I dare say more people would know The Man Who Sold the World than Drive-In Saturday.

We're basically trying to find Buzzjack's favourite Bowie tracks but we can't really rate every song he ever released for obvious reasons.

I say include songs that are generally know even if they weren't singles or charting singles.

Posted by: dandy* 17th January 2016, 03:23 PM

Ps Taylor Jago... I hope you don't mind us debating this - I think we all appreciate you running it, regardless of songs chosen! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Joe. 17th January 2016, 03:28 PM

Poor Taylor. I don't think anyone could include EVERYTHING first off.

I think Suffragette City and MWSTW (maybe magic dance too, to represent his work in the iconic film) are the only two that *need* to be added now, since Cat People, Laz and Changes are added. It's just too much either. I'm all for shaving off some of the remixes at the end to make it slightly shorter.

Suffragette City was a b-side/album track only.

Same with Ziggy Stardust, Man Who Sold The World, Station To Station.
Hang On To Yourself was released under the Arnold Corns moniker and failed to chart

Any others?

ATYD - album outtake only
SC - album track
Slow Burn - U.S. single only
New Killer Star - U.S. single only
LFW - non single
Blackstar - Only charted on Fri
TMWSTW - album only
TS(AOT) - UK #102
LIS (remix) - 12" only release - failed to chart
Shadow Man - Probable Ziggy outtake, recorded for the aborted Toy album 2001
I'm Afraid Of American - U.S. single

Oh and Magic Dance was a U.S. single only

I don't know whether this would run but what I am going to do (eventually!) with a Beatles rate is have everyone give their top 10. Then the 40 songs that appear the most times would be selected for the rate. I know this adds another level to the rate but with so many essential songs that were not singles this seems the best way to do it given he's got such a vast catalogue.

Posted by: Severin 17th January 2016, 04:56 PM

Rating Bowie will always be tough. Most of his weak songs are superior to other act's decent ones, hence they are rated in comparison to his work. 3 11's is not enough!!

Why?

It's great. At least the single version is. The album version is terrible

To be fair there were about 8 tracks I could have given the third 11 to but I figured that needed the boost more and I was playing it in the car today.

Darn, it's album only everywhere!

I don't hate the other version as such, it's just not what I expected you to give an 11 to for some reason. There's no logic or quality involved, just a presumption of tastes.

Posted by: Severin 17th January 2016, 08:25 PM

Tarantino knows how good it is!

I can see why you wouldn't expect it. I've been fairly clear in my comparative disapproval of 80's Bowie but it is also the decade where I first discovered him and this came out not long after the Scary Monsters album which was the first I ever had so I'm kind of fond of it.

Posted by: Joe. 17th January 2016, 09:51 PM

80s Bowie was generally a mess but Scary Monsters and Let's Dance are so good! (I know the latter divides opinions a lot)

This is TOO loony. It was really difficult, I was trying to restrict myself from giving too many 10s, but I thought, what the hell? I'm usually good at being reserved with rate scores, I think only Madonna would be able to rival such levels of extreme fandom in a singles rate from me.

0 Alabama Song (I don't know what he was doing here)

Bowie played it a lot on what was essentially the 'Heroes' tour. They quickly recorded a studio version during a break and Bowie insisted on its release in order to quicker fulfill his contractual obligations with RCA. The awkward key changes were deliberate but I'm pretty sure he wasn't satisfied with it either except as an exercise in annoying his label.

The B-side was a great stripped down version of Space Oddity and that's probably why it sold enough to chart.

Before you all recoil from your screens in total and utter horror, I didn't see the point in doing this unless I actually tried to separate out the scores somewhat. So, you have 11s as being my favourite Bowie tracks, -1s as being my least favourite and everything else is relative between the two extremes.

I'll run and hide now...

I prefer top 5/10/20's myself because it forces everyone to avoid giving everything the same mark, and therefore is more exciting and the differences more pronounced. Very in favour of the Beatles one - I will get round to a Quickie Rate if not (top 5's), but top 10 is better, more to choose from cheer.gif

Aha, thanks for that. It all makes sense now. In fact, you could probably add on a few points to it now that I know why smile.gif

You won't like Dead Man Walking but Heart's Filthy Lesson is sorta of post-NIN and I like it rather a lot.
