BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: JosephCarey 10th December 2016, 03:04 PM

It's the week before the race for the Christmas #1, and things are starting to get busy. We have potential new entries from The X Factor Winner (out Sunday), 'I Don't Wanna Live Forever' by ZAYN & Taylor Swift, 'Just Hold On' by Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson (out Saturday night/Sunday), 'Touch' and 'Oops' by Little Mix, 'You Don't Know Me' by Jax Jones featuring RAYE and 'Million Reasons' by Lady Gaga. Who will be #1? It's too early to call! Expect Christmas songs galore once again too.

On the album chart, it looks like it could finally be Michael Ball & Alfie Boe's turn at the top after their TV special on Friday night. The Rolling Stones will put up a fight for the top however, with Little Mix, Elvis Presley and Olly Murs all hanging around too. New entries are thin on the ground but expect boosts for The Weeknd, Little Mix and Kylie Minogue following The X Factor this weekend.

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday and Sunday: Information on Twitter from MintRoyale only. Please do not make requests, we do not have any information other than what's posted.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 + Radio 1 Chart Update 5:30pm to 5:45pm.
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Midweek information will be scarce over the Christmas period, we will not get updates as frequently as normal, we thank you for your patience!

Singles chart looking awesome this week *.* Such a big decision to make tho, do I go to the cinema for my friends Birthday with some friends (film starts 4.00) or do I pretend to be ill and listen to the chart?

I wouldn't mind missing it most weeks but this week tho unsure.gif

If one of my friends dared to have a birthday on such an important occasion, I'd cut them off for being insensitive.

People cancel real life for the chart in this day and age?

Posted by: raphaelalm 10th December 2016, 04:44 PM

Hope Little Mix can back to number #1 or #2 this week. The X Factor effect is always good.

Possibly Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson for the #1 spot, given the X Factor performance.

Posted by: Dobbo 10th December 2016, 07:45 PM

The thought of Steve Aoki having a UK #1 single is quite a odd prospect.

Best chance this week for our Kylie....she was just singing At Christmas on the Talk Talk X Factor ad break.

Talking of X Factor, be interesting to see if this years winner beats Louisa.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 10th December 2016, 10:05 PM

Yep she is on Jonathan Ross now singing 'At Christmas' lets see how it goes down........ 345 on UK iTunes right now

I think she is singing Everybody's Free on X-factor tomorrow but maybe she will do both in like a Xmas medley.....

Posted by: girl_from_oz 10th December 2016, 10:13 PM

The Louis Tomlinson track is on spotify now so I suspect that will end up doing better then Zayn and Taylor

Posted by: timjimlee 10th December 2016, 10:19 PM

Looking like we will get more comments on Singles chart predictions (than Albums) this week - a rarity in recent months.
It is refreshing to have a more unpredictable Singles chart and looks good for an exciting couple of weeks.

Really should just be social! When I couldn't watch a West Ham match due to clashes I'd record it, desperately avoid finding out the score and then watch it when I was home... most of the time I needn't have bothered. laugh.gif

Looking at the chart this week, hope I Feel It Coming remains stable and Tom Zanetti climbs.

I honestly couldn't do that. Football is number one priority on a weekend (along with The X Factor of course!). wink.gif

Posted by: iain 11th December 2016, 08:00 AM

I still think Clean Bandit will easily be no 1 this week. Zane/Taylor is already decreasing on iTunes and doesn't have Spotify streaming, Louis hasn't taken a huge iTunes lead and is missing nearly 2 days of sale. The X Factor winner will miss nearly 3 days of sale, doesn't have a physical this year, and it remains to be seen if they do anything on streaming.

Posted by: crazy christmas 11th December 2016, 08:55 AM

Ball and Boe should have the No.1 album as their ITV special is repeated tonight. It'll be interesting to see where The Stones fall to this week.

Posted by: SmileyKylie 11th December 2016, 09:10 AM

Kylie Minogue up to 155th on ITunes. Primed for an 'At Christmas' Xfactor performance to kick it into top 100 but not sure she will sing it..... maybe the Rozalla Cover Everybodys Free?

Posted by: timjimlee 11th December 2016, 09:23 AM

Wonder whether Adele can climb back into Top 10 this week with "25", it doesn't really need the additional sales to secure Year-end Sales number 1 (that is in bag) but BBC show of the Live Performance from New York appears to have given the Album a significant boost.

Posted by: slowdown73 11th December 2016, 10:30 AM

T5 wouldn't surprise me - the previous one has been a strong trickle-seller.

If it charts lower, it's probably because it's not the sort of album you give to your mum or your granny as an Xmas present! laugh.gif

Just checked and Louisa got Justin down to about 0.5000 at one point and she was number 1 for around 49 hours according to kworb!

Matt will probably push Matt down to less than 0.5000 but with the lack of physical sales it might do the same as Louisa

I expect Matt will do a bit better than Louisa, purely because his song isn't utter garbage unlike last years winners single (no fault of louisa's mind). Matt's will appeal more to casual listeners hearing it on the radio and seeing on tv.

Posted by: bah... humbug... 12th December 2016, 12:36 PM

#2 to #5 in the singles look pretty close. I should imagine Louis and Steve will climb further throughout the week, and Matt Terry should appear on tomorrows mids.

Top 5 albums look pretty healthy sales wise. J. Cole will most likely be the only new album inside the 40.

Posted by: pippa 12th December 2016, 02:36 PM

The lack of physicals may not dampen Matt's sales too much as its likely that those who buy the cd single don't download the so those sales should transfer (most of them),that said, i am sure the cd single has been used for many a stocking filler for children in the past.

Out of all the new contenders i like Louis Tomlinsons track the most, it surprised me how much i enjoyed it.

Wonderful to see Katie Melua back in the top 40 albums, this album is doing well for her.

I did think Kylie would be higher in the albums but the X Factor effect wont have hit yet, that said, her performance would have done nothing to sway me into buying the album, it was a wasted opportunity for such an excellent promotion slot.

Little Mix should comfortably take number 2in the albums and i am delighted Olly Murs is holding in the top 5.

Possibly amazon, also the song vanished from itunes for a few hours so people may have gone to amazon to buy it during that period

I know some data is missing, but it's great to finally see in the top 40!

Tonight : Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
Tomorrow : Royal Variety

it has a very good chance of reaching the top 40 by Friday!

The data missing will actually work in her favour, as it's iTunes data missing and Million Reasons was high on iTunes.

Think we all underestimated Human! At this point I'm thinking...

1. Louis
2. Matt
3. CB
4. Rag'n'Bone Man
5. The Weeknd
6. Mariah
7. Rae Sremmurd
8. ZAYlor
9. James Arthur
10. Zara

24. Little Mix (Touch) *
29. Little Mix (Oops) *
35. J.Cole *
33. Lady Gaga *

..but I'll revise them when we get a full, correct update.

Oh, I misread that part.

In that case, it's definitely entering top 40 by the end of the week, hoping for top 30, depends on the tonights and tomorrow's boost.

Posted by: BrookeOlivia 12th December 2016, 04:38 PM

I personally cant see Matt getting #2 after missing few days of sales, Plus I would imagine it to start dropping on iTunes shortly.

I think he could debut top 5 maybe? Which would be a better result than last year's single.

That's still a large chunk of her sales though! They helped her out hugely and ultimately kept her top 10 in week 1.

Posted by: christmdhas 12th December 2016, 05:54 PM

Irregardless of the Little Mix, Louis and Matt Terry tracks that'll make more of an appearance soon, the amount of change we're seeing this week is great. Would be great to see Rag'n'Bone Man stay as high as possible, maybe #4 is doable for him.

Posted by: Hadji 12th December 2016, 06:01 PM

Calum Scott at #39 which is decreasing on streaming so it should finally be out of the top 40 on Friday

I'm legitimately shocked to see Olly Murs having such fantastic staying power with this album. I thought for sure his hype had evaporated after the relatively poor performance of his singles this era.

I sincerely hope Clean Bandit, or even Matt, manage to block Louis Tomlinson. It would be the worst #1 of the year without a doubt, which is quite a feat given that 'Stitches' and 'Closer' reached the top.

Yes it is a little bit of a surprise he has stayed above Robbie in the last couple of weeks given the amount of promotion Robbie is getting in - also a little bit ironic given the mentoring Robbie gave to Olly on the X factor...
Robbie on the BBC Music Awards tonight though, may give him boost to overtake Olly...

Looking at the YTD sales for both Albums it is neck and neck between the two, couldn't call which will finish higher in the Year End sales chart.

Robbie impressive IMO as he doesn't get support from a younger age group any longer as he's older and made the move to radio 2.

But then again older artists are performing better with albums due to younger people not buying albums any more!

Still think Robbie is trying to appeal across the board though, he still likes to try and appear edgy (there are at least 3 songs on the Album with the Explicit tag, "Mother****er" for example) however calling the Album "The Heavy Entertainment Show" shows he does see himself as the All-round Entertainer...

You are forgetting neither Louis or Matt have a full week.

I think Clean Bandit will just hold on by a couple of thousand copies and Louis/Matt will be very close between 2-3. Next week is when it gets hard to predict, due to their iTunes and Spotify performances being very unpredictable for us right now.

So good to see decent album sales and genuinely surprised at the sustained success of Olly - I guess he really is an album/gift buying act now which is no bad thing!

The Top 5 album once again really shows which age group is propping up the physical albums - appreciate a lot is gift buying but Alfie/Michael, Rolling Stones and Elvis are appealing to the market that doesn't download or stream.

Excellent start for Louis - was hoping he would kick Clean Bandit off the top, it's a good track but not 'worthy' of a 6 week stint at #1! And fair play to Matt Terry - Unknown song and no physical and doing better than expected.

I think Matt will need a big boost in streams today/tomorrow to make it this week. If I've worked it out right he's doing about 2-3k more per day than Clean Bandit but there's not enough days to take over now I think.

Next week though God knows what's going to happen. Still can't decide whether the Jo Cox one is going to be big or not.

Firstly, singles sales had shrunk by about 20% in between those two releases.
Secondly, Ben's song was uplifting and suited his style and voice. Louisa's failed on all those counts, so people just weren't interested.

Posted by: AcerBen 14th December 2016, 12:44 PM

Louisa's single was probably the worst there had been since Leon Jackson, and also she wasn't actually that popular. She was sort of a default winner because the producers had nuked all her competition.

Ben was really popular with the viewers and had a great song, which got a lot of radio support IIRC.

Plus, X Factor 2015 was considered a mess by its fans for a number of reasons (myself included), and the interest in the show rapidly shrunk. Coupled with an underwhelming winners single which people just didn't like.

Matt Terry deserves to at least do better than that. IMO anyway.

Yeah but what I'm surprised about is that Louisa's flop wasn't just a blip, but the fact that this seems to be the new normal. Sure Matt will peak higher first week out but it's barely going to sell more than Louisa did.

I'd chalked up a lot of Forever Young's failure to it being a dire song, but Matt's is pretty decent by all accounts so I thought it could at least score an 80k-100k opening sale.

Yeah I see what you mean. I think other things to bear in mind - it gets two less chart days than before, the TV ratings have gone down, no CD single, the song only got performed once at the final instead of 2 or 3 times, and people are less likely to buy a talent show's single for the sake of it like they used to do back in the day.

Louisa was the favourite to win that year, when she auditioned I just knew she would be one of the final 12.

It all boils down to the song choice in the end, it was awful, it didn't really connect, hence low sales.

Yeah I wouldn't call Louisa unpopular but the show was heavily manipulated in her favour last year. But at the end of the day, if the audience didn't like her, she wouldn't have won. Look at Gifty this year... she was over hyped in the early weeks but the voting stats reveal she never won the audience over. laugh.gif

Posted by: Hassaan 14th December 2016, 03:42 PM

Louisa did manage to get 2 top 20 singles so it can't have been all bad. But yes, I think the general consensus is that last year's winners single was poor and that showed in the sales.

It would be nice for Matt to at least get the number 1 this week, but it's not looking likely. I'm sure we'll get some Christmas #1-specific releases next week.

Yeah but my point was that the initial impact of the show's winners singles has suddenly evaporated after being reliably consistently huge for a decade.

Hope "Oops" can scrape top 40 even though it's not an official single. Seeing as it's becoming popular, they should make it the third single from Glory Days

Impossible to answer that we only have top 5 sales.

Those album sales are very low given its December. Only a few years ago, albums were shifting 200k per week in run up to Christmas but this week may struggle to reach 100k but lack of strong releases this year is also a factor.

It's a shame really as she has a great voice and one of few worthy of the ole Louis Walsh "you look like a popstar, you sound like a popstar" thing. We can all say it was manipulated for her to win but at the end of the day she deserved it imo. Fully agree the problem isn't her... it was the song. It really was a poor choice and even Simon admits it. Hopefully it showed you can't just give them any old rubbish. However, she went on to feature on Tears which has gone platinum so let's wait and see. They'll probably just ignore Forever Young now like Little Mix with Cannonball which is good for her.

Good to see a Christmas song in the Top 3 this week. Looks like a good couple of weeks.

Pity the album chart isn't what it used to be at Christmas.

Mariah really does not look on form to be challenging for #1 next week, 12th biggest track on Tuesday. Yes her streams will increase next week but unless there is some concerted effort to push it next week I don't think realistically she can expect anything better than #4. Peak streaming will fall on 23rd, 24th and 25th - all of which will count for the chart AFTER Christmas.

No? It's a movie soundtrack that's A which we all know how different it is. B - without Spotify it's sort of impossible for them also, and they have nothing to prove (At least her...) and he SHOULD have sell 60K (5K streaming at least?) for 4 days and 3M votes on the Finale this week. I don't agree... Matt is facing Rockabye that is as big as Bieber songs and is facing also Louis, and all this knowing that Matt song had almost 3 less sales days (and also without physical sales).

Louisa also had physical copies in the shops where matt DOESN'T so that gained some sales for her, Cant remember her first week physical sales but expect it to be a few thousand.

For me there are two surprises of Q4:

1. Ball/Boe album's success
2. Bruno Mars album's fail. I was sure of his domination because people names him as the most successful pop male artist nowadays.
But reality is different.

Bruno's sound on his new album is different from his previous two albums. If he had come out with another "Locked Out of Heaven" or "Just The Way You Are" then he would be shifting more albums.

olly murs is not Robbie

In fairness to Olly the last time they both released new Studio Albums in the same year (2012) Olly was the runaway winner in terms of Sales.

For me it shouldn't be a problem if you're the most popular artist. Usually in this case people buy everything you release.

I'm sure Bruno will be selling into 2017 whereas Ball/Boe will fall away soon after new year!

Seeing Rag'n'Bones increase today do you think that it could be enough to get the N.2 instead of Louis/Matt?

No way, he will definitely be #4 this week.

The only battle is Louis and Matt, which I think could go either way, but think Matt will end up just managing the #2 spot.

I wish people would get over songs more easily. The only one week number one this year was Pillowtalk wasn't it?! Like, there's other songs out there! It's not even that the song on top is THAT popular, it's just that they continually stream it.

Fair play to Matt for challenging for the #2 spot and still holding on at #1 on iTunes - maybe physicals could have made the difference.

Waiting for that 2-1-38-Out chart run now though kink.gif

Amazing that Lady Gaga is getting another top 40 hit from Joanne, it's not really an album made for charts

At least it makes for a change from the days of old where we'd get about 10 one-week number ones in a row and it became all too predictable who was going to enter at #1 weeks in advance.

'Rockabye' deserves all the weeks it can get as it's clearly shown itself to be a very popular hit happy.gif

It has had the longest consecutive run at #1 on the sales chart of the year (5 weeks so far...) so surely must be quite popular.

In an OA/OS environment there have only been 19 number 1s on the singles sales chart this year, and only four 1-week stays which is a little more normal and less manipulated IMO.

Tied with "7 Years" which also spent five consecutive weeks at the top of the sales chart

Exactly which is why "One Dance" was #1 for so long because people wouldn't get over that song

Posted by: Jonjo 15th December 2016, 10:12 PM

'Rockabye' feels like a much bigger hit than 'One Dance' and 'Closer' to me and I really don't know why it feels like that to me. I just get the feeling that more people (average Joe public) would recognise Clean Bandit than they would the other 2!

Posted by: andeeeeyhart 15th December 2016, 10:18 PM

I like Rockabye a lot, but I don't feel it deserves to be as big a hit as it's chart run dictates. It feels like a 2/3 week at no.1 as apposed to a 5/6 weeker. Plus it's not as seminal as Rather Be, yet it's already outdone that.

Still, I'd rather it was at no.1 this week then the likes of Matt or Louis.

Rather Be was out at a time where streaming wasn't counted towards the charts, I'm sure it would've spent about 8 weeks at #1 in the current chart climate as it was huge on streams!

That's been the theme of 2016 #1's in general tbh.

So having been out of the loop, for like a bit, what's the formula for how many streams to make one sale?

She had sold 50,000 by the end of the year (and around 80k in total), so fair to say physicals probably made up 15-20,000 of her sales in her opening week.
