WELL. Not really the image I wanted in my head

Song clip sounds great though.

So we'll be having 2 new entries by GaGa in next week's chart if this and Venus are released as planned biggrin.gif

No, Venus will still be released next week (27th or 28th), it's just premiering on Friday. But hopefully her R Kelly collab goes top 10, it sounds amazing from the preview!

Posted by: HausofVenus Oct 19 2013, 04:03 PM

I've had that clip on repeat recently. In need of some silky-smooth R&Bga so this had better deliver.

And the cover art heart.gif!

Posted by: Tommy G Oct 19 2013, 04:11 PM

So she's now also ripping off Kendrick Lamar with those covers.

WHEN WILL THIS END

(jokes)

Posted by: Gary Can't Stop Oct 19 2013, 07:53 PM

IS THAT HER ASS?

Posted by: HausofVenus Oct 19 2013, 08:02 PM

Well i'm hoping it's not R Kelly's ohmy.gif!

Posted by: tessellate Oct 20 2013, 08:52 PM

Not much longer to wait now. cheer.gif I really want to hear it in full.

Posted by: Silver Rocket Oct 20 2013, 09:11 PM

Did anyone see her Twitter meltdown this evening? ohmy.gif

Fabulous.

HAHAHAHAHA! It was amazing! cheer.gif

Plus, 6 hours and 40 minutes till we can hear it in full! It's a shame it's not released Worldwide tomorrow!

Posted by: Envoirment Oct 20 2013, 11:36 PM

Really like the snippet! Much better than I thought it would be. Cannot wait to hear it in full. happy.gif

Posted by: Mariah Scary Oct 21 2013, 03:29 AM

Wow...really good tbh LOL

Posted by: Jonjo Oct 21 2013, 04:00 AM

It's goooooood! I think it's a grower too. Different to what's out there at the moment and I can see this serving as the 4th or 5th single. wub.gif

Posted by: Jark Oct 21 2013, 04:21 AM

That is fresh as f***. And yet pure 90s. The melodies... So smooth! I'm melting.

Posted by: JVSH Oct 21 2013, 04:41 AM

I'm so here for this being the fourth single with an added feature (with R Kelly starting with "It's the remix..")!

Posted by: Jonjo Oct 21 2013, 05:20 AM

Addicted to this after the 3rd listen! It's brilliant. So different and "fresh as f***" indeed!

Posted by: Tommy G Oct 21 2013, 05:24 AM

This really is something very special.

It sounds like Mariah Carey in places as well!

Posted by: Tyler Oct 21 2013, 07:47 AM

IMMENSE.

This is f***ing amazing.

Posted by: APRIL J Oct 21 2013, 08:06 AM

AMAZING! So much better than Applause. I'm all for this being a single at some point too! R Kelly slays just as much as Gaga on this, a great collab and a great song!

Posted by: Jáhq Oct 21 2013, 08:26 AM

Sounds like a genuine smash. Just a straight up pop song with fantastic results. So instant, so so catchy.

Posted by: HausofVenus Oct 21 2013, 08:42 AM

Seriously brilliant. R Kelly's verse and that middle 8 wub.gif 'Venus' has stiff competition and needs to be BIG to to not be overshadowed by this.

3/3!

Posted by: HausofVenus Oct 21 2013, 08:51 AM

#1 on US iTunes biggrin.gif

Released midnight tonight in the UK and worldwide.

Posted by: Thermometer Oct 21 2013, 08:52 AM

This is good, nice to hear GaGa's voice on a mid tempo. I can't see this being a single but if this is the standard of the album tracks then I can't wait for it to drop!

Edit - I was listening to the slowed down version tongue.gif

Posted by: Oricon Oct 21 2013, 08:57 AM

#1 on US iTunes already and with Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift as competitions as well?! ohmy.gif

Perhaps this should have been lead single..

Posted by: Jáhq Oct 21 2013, 08:57 AM

It really isn't a mid tempo with the proper, non-slowed down version. tongue.gif

Will be crazy if it isn't made into a single. So addicted.

Posted by: Thermometer Oct 21 2013, 08:59 AM

Yeah, I just noticed that the video posted here was slowed down. The proper version is still slower than Applause though tongue.gif It sounds like a massive grower though, such a jam wub.gif

Posted by: *Rob* Oct 21 2013, 09:14 AM

This. Is. INCREDIBLE!

Her best song in a while easily outshining Applause for me.

Venus is under tons of pressure to now top this.

Posted by: APRIL J Oct 21 2013, 09:20 AM

Could this 'do a Edge of Glory' and become her third single? It does seem quite popular but I think Sexxx Dreams needs a release! I hope Venus is just as good, if not better, than this! cheer.gif

I think it's alright, but really not all that amazing, oops sad.gif

Posted by: Tommy G Oct 21 2013, 04:28 PM

It's only intended to cause hype for Venus isn't it? If people think it's good then more publicity for the campaign and Venus. I don't see them promoting this song again after this personally.

Posted by: Silver Rocket Oct 21 2013, 04:29 PM

Much better, stronger and more individual than 'Applause'. I approve!

Posted by: APRIL J Oct 21 2013, 04:57 PM

Apparently this, Venus and Dope will be ineligible to chart! mad.gif sad.gif

Someone with Twitter needs to start a campaign! biggrin.gif

I can understand this and Dope not being able to chart but Venus too? Thats the single. But I guess since it's being included in the promo single
thing it wont chart?

It's ridiculous! I think they'll realise mid-week and change the rule like they did with David Bowie earlier this year. Well, I hope so anyway!

Posted by: Calum Sandé Oct 21 2013, 05:44 PM

This is so GOOD. wub.gif So much better than 'Applause' (not rly any competition tho) Starting to restore a little faith that this era may be quite nice.

This is my Favouirte Lady Gaga song in a while I've not really liked anything by her since the Fame era but this is great and it sounds like something that would be on The Fame Album.

It's a shame that Australia, one of the first places which made Gaga into a commercial mainstream artist just ditches her nowadays and pretty much don't tolerate her anymore.

Posted by: Mikal Oct 21 2013, 10:52 PM

The UK seem very similar in that respect, she struggles here which is a shame sad.gif

WHO decided Applause was a better lead single than this??? This would have surely been a huge smash, right? It's easily the best thing she's released since anything from The Fame Monster. I can't help but think Venus won't be nearly as good as this either...like what was she thinking for real

Surprised at this completely loving reaction - first listen, it's decent but it's nothing special. Sounds more like an album track from The Fame, not very exciting at all.

Posted by: Queenderella Oct 22 2013, 05:34 AM

This is so boring.

Posted by: R0B Oct 22 2013, 09:26 AM

#1 on UK iTunes!!

Posted by: Liаm Oct 22 2013, 09:38 AM

After giving it a day or two, I have to agree with Rob sad.gif It's pretty good, but nothing that's much better than a lot of The Fame. If it was on The Fame Monster, it'd be the second weakest track after Teeth.

Posted by: Jáhq Oct 22 2013, 11:19 AM

I think this has a lot more to it then The Fame which overall was a pretty basic pop album imo, compared to what she's done since at least. For me it's the best thing she's done since some of the tracks on The Fame Monster. It's just so infectious.

Posted by: UnionJGeek Oct 22 2013, 03:43 PM

Im glad this is #1 on iTunes now over that rubbish that was there...I think it is because it is much more instant. With Applause it really had to grow on you to love the track (I do now). But with this track, the melody and even the lyrics get locked in you're head. This morning I woke up and whilst in the shower i was humming it LMAO!

Posted by: Liаm Oct 22 2013, 05:02 PM

Ok this is really bloody growing! sad.gif I found Applause quite instant, but this has taken a bit longer, and yet it was a quick click because it's grown so much since this morning.

Posted by: Regina Oct 22 2013, 07:41 PM

Posted by: Silver Rocket Oct 22 2013, 07:53 PM

Posted by: Jáhq Oct 22 2013, 08:06 PM

YAY. If "Venus" turns out to be completely amazing and even better than "Do What U Want" then maybe I'll change my mind but for now I think it's a great decision with how well it's performing worldwide and how commercial it sounds. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Calum Sandé Oct 22 2013, 08:07 PM

I'm so glad this will be the second single now! Such a tune wub.gif

Posted by: Thermometer Oct 22 2013, 08:11 PM

Great news! (saying that without having heard Venus I know) The right decision by her team seeing as this is doing things in the charts! Hopefully this means she'll be performing this on X Factor instead of the planned Venus.

Posted by: R0B Oct 22 2013, 08:11 PM

It still won't be allowed to chart tho. What a mess this era is turning out to be!

Posted by: Jark Oct 22 2013, 09:13 PM

Yeah, such a mess. Second single #1 on virtually every iTunes store. Silly successful bitch!

It's all good saying it's #1 on iTunes. But it's already down to #2 in the UK and falling fast. It probably won't chart Top 10, if at all, this week and then the video won't appear until December.

Posted by: HausofVenus Oct 22 2013, 09:26 PM

I'm obviously ecstatic it's a single because it's the best she's done in a while but she could have kept it for the 3rd single.

What if 'Venus' comes and is an even bigger success than this? Will she just change again. Part of the fun with Gaga is the unpredictability, but i can't help but feel this is off to an even messier start than the last era drama.gif

Also have no idea if it will actually be able to chart at all in the UK ://

Posted by: Calum Sandé Oct 22 2013, 10:00 PM

Must admit, it does look like she has little faith that 'Venus' would have any ounce of success that this is currently having so has decided to change just to see if she can get a hit after 'Applause' failing to be as big as she may have hoped. Would have been good if 'Venus' remained cause it may actually be very decent, but this is also very good. Is she going to switch back to 'Venus' if this flops on its arse?

Posted by: Rooney Oct 22 2013, 10:09 PM

This is the best thing she's done since The Fame era.

It's a simple pop song, it's what made her so successful in the first place. I know her fans love her egotistical nature, but it really does not reflect brilliantly to the casual public IE myself. This is back to basics and obviously people must be feeling it for it to be the second single and it's doing so well worldwide..

Posted by: Oricon Oct 22 2013, 10:45 PM

Total #1 on iTunes is 70 countries.

Posted by: shaneyboy_x Oct 22 2013, 10:48 PM

Number 1 primarily due to per album sales

Posted by: UnionJGeek Oct 22 2013, 10:57 PM

This era seemed f**ked up from the beginning to me now this?!?! It deffo puts what she will be performing on Sunday to some confusion thats for sure!

If this is now OFFICIALLY the second single then she should perform this on Sunday with R.Kelly (If he is available) then it will give the song some more recognition and longevity!

Posted by: Tyler Oct 22 2013, 11:29 PM

Posted by: R0B Oct 23 2013, 05:39 AM

'Venus' is still being released on Monday and will still have a video according to Gaga.

Posted by: Jark Oct 23 2013, 06:20 AM

The public don't know a damn thing about Venus. To them it doesn't exist yet. So how can the campaign be a mess? People need to stop over analysing and look at the bigger picture. We know this song appeals to the casual fans she lost last time so let it do its job.

Posted by: Queenderella Oct 23 2013, 08:54 AM

Thinking about it, for all we know Venus doesn't even exist! Or it does and it was never intended to be a single. But I don't see why GaGa would want to release a buzz single a few days before her new official one so I'd rather think it was her plan all along.

Posted by: APRIL J Oct 23 2013, 09:24 AM

I think this is a great decision! I also played Sexxx Dreams to someone yesterday and they loved it (they hate Gaga). 3rd single please! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Silver Rocket Oct 23 2013, 11:11 AM

GaGa did make a massive deal on Twitter the other day about announcing 'Venus' as the second single to be fair, but I think this will work well.

It's really catchy!

Posted by: HausofVenus Oct 23 2013, 11:21 AM

It's not a mess commercially obviously (i mean the song has managed to beat the record previously held by 'Someone Like You' by topping iTunes charts in 83 different countries!!) but i just hope she isn't rushing this decision at the first whiff of a hit.

She's filmed stuff for Thanksgiving already in the US and apparently didn't perform any of the promo singles (guessing that includes DWUW) so will she re-record that for a chance of extra promo for the single? And lord knows when we'll get a music video given the effort she's gone into planning the 'Venus' video which is still coming. She might also be deleting the song and re-adding it as a single on iTunes which will make it count on the charts so if she's doing that she needs to be FAST or just add it on Sunday so X Factor can propel it up. I'm not really fussed because we're getting a damn good song out of it but just a little wary that it will take a lot more effort to get the single going because of all the scrapped plans for 'Venus'/starting over from scratch (and i'm known to stress/freak out anyway so bear with me kink.gif)..

Posted by: Queenderella Oct 23 2013, 01:07 PM

That record doesn't really mean much as a BUNCH of new itunes stores opened earlier this year.

She made a big deal out of it being the second single over twitter and had even confirmed she was performing 'Venus' on X Factor as well as getting things ready for the video though. She made more of a big deal about that song than she did for 'Do What You Want' as a promo single. So the people who knew about DWYW, would most certainly have known about 'Venus' I think.

Posted by: Jark Oct 23 2013, 03:13 PM

I'm talking about the public at large Jonjo, not the small percentage of them who follow Lady Gaga on Twitter. Nobody has heard Venus on the radio, seen it on vevo... It's just been hyped among the fans. I don't know why those same fans seem so against her trying a new sound with the second single.

This completely. No-one who is not a Lady GaGa fan has heard of Venus or is readily excited to hear it. It's not like it's been out for a few weeks and everyone is starting to get a feel of the track. I'm not even sure how much it has been picked up on my journalists etc.

Do What You Want is getting good publicity, and it seems stupid to launch another track when the promo single is doing so well. You're taking a risk that the public will latch on the the promo single and not Venus, thus Venus flopping on its arse completely and Do You Want riding high in the charts.

Her Monsters will do anything for her. But she's lost the casual fan completely, this is a stripped back, catchy pop song. It's not making some crazy statement, which is why I think the general public are picking up on the track.

Posted by: R0B Oct 23 2013, 04:07 PM

'Do What U Want' is not eligible to chart. What a waste!

Posted by: APRIL J Oct 23 2013, 04:28 PM

Shame about being ineligible! Hopefully they change the rule, but I don't think they will. Perhaps they should release a separate single version ASAP though? Looks like there's lots of unhappy people on Twitter! laugh.gif

Posted by: Tommy G Oct 23 2013, 05:24 PM

Definitely in my top five favourite Gaga songs now. So effortless and I think this is the first song for years that I HAVE to play repeatedly after I've just heard it. Really impressed with what she's done and I think this is an early contender for my favourite songs of 2013.

Posted by: Tyler Oct 23 2013, 07:37 PM

I've just realised why this isn't clicking fully - it's about 5 BPM too fast. It could have been brilliant, although I still like it. A bit like "Heavy Metal Lover" with a proper chorus.

And is selling incredibly well and doing so much better than Applause did despite Applause having the benefit of being the first single (which always gets more hype). How is that stupid?

Lady GaGa fans need to like step back and like enjoy that the public is actually loving a Lady Gaga song on a level that hasn't really been seen since Telephone.

YES.

I'm all for zany weird pop songs, but imagine if she'd released Goverment Hooker over The Edge Of Glory! Not that Government Hooker is really that similar to Venus, but you get the point!

This will bigger than anything last era I'm sure. It'll at least be about equal to The Edge Of Glory.

Gaga needs to understand nothing other than that she has full control over what she wants to do.

Posted by: Jark Oct 28 2013, 07:51 PM

That's not necessarily a positive.

Posted by: Slick Oct 28 2013, 10:06 PM

Tbh having heard 'Venus' for the first time on Sunday alongside the superb 'Do What You Want', the latter is everything I wanted 'ARTPOP' to be. Good, simple pop. 'Venus' (so far) is everything I did not want it to be. I love most of the stuff that she comes up with but even as a big fan I can see that she needs to simplify things and go back to basics. If there's more 'DWUW' on ARTPOP, consider me excited.

Posted by: Calum Sandé Nov 6 2013, 11:29 AM

Looking like it's set in a hospital, then??

Posted by: Cal Nov 6 2013, 11:42 AM

I have a love/hate thing with Richardson. I kinda love his style but he's a bit too creepy. If the image is anything to go by then the video could be really great (if it's not 15 minutes long).

Posted by: 152chris Nov 6 2013, 12:24 PM

YAS.

Posted by: Regina Nov 6 2013, 12:26 PM

Maybe it will have references to her hip surgery in it? If it is set in a hospital

Posted by: APRIL J Nov 6 2013, 12:34 PM

If they're only just filming it, it will be a while till she releases it! sad.gif

At least it will help it with longevity in the chart though!

Posted by: HausofVenus Nov 6 2013, 01:12 PM

I wouldn't worry about that at all April. The song is only just getting started and one of the problems with the last era was big opening sales and then falling super fast so she's done well to keep 'Applause' in the top 10 for so long in the US this time round. I'm confident the video will be out around the time it's huge on radio there which would = a very good peak and longevity.

On the concept i think it could well be the hip surgery as Regina alluded to. And maybe a 'Bad Romance 2.0' going on the images so far/theme of that video and this song ohmy.gif

Posted by: APRIL J Nov 12 2013, 01:32 AM

Anymore news on the video?

Hopefully it gets a good debut position here in the UK this week...probably around #7-8. As long as they include the sales in the certification/official total, I don't mind that they excluded the song for so long!

Posted by: HausofKubrick Nov 20 2013, 12:00 PM

On the video:

“It’s a powerful video, I really love it. It shows us completely beaming and smiling into the camera as two very passionate performers; and it’s sort of the juxtaposition of all these worlds, and all the different Lady Gaga’s and R. Kelly’s that you think you know coming together, through the eyes of Terry Richardson.”

Posted by: Jonjo Nov 20 2013, 09:22 PM

Did anyone see her performance on SNL? Was alright. The stuff she was doing with R Kelly though... had that been Miley's performance, the world would be in flames! laugh.gif But meh. Whatever. I liked it.

Posted by: Jark Nov 25 2013, 09:43 AM

Is it bad that I think R Kelly sounds better than Gaga there? (other than that, fab performance!)

Posted by: Hayzayy Nov 25 2013, 03:56 PM

I love the song more and more everyday and the performance was great... until the last bit. She did the acapella thing at the end too many times before and I can't stand her screaming voice.
Why can't she just do a "fun" performance without ruining it at the end like that! She does it all the time.

PERFECT timing!

(oh apparently it could just be the behind the scenes video coming then unsure.gif)

Posted by: Jonjo Nov 28 2013, 02:24 PM

Is it definitely the video to this? Apparently there are teasers for 'Venus' going around, which means it could be that video? sad.gif

Posted by: PaulM1983 Nov 28 2013, 05:30 PM

The Venus "teasers" are not real. They're Gaga playing with dolls, making them dance to Venus. She uploaded them on her Instagram.

Also, there has been an official announcement about Do What U Want's video package. It's being released through BitTorrent in a bundle with other stuff. I'm assuming it'll also be uploaded to Vevo at the same time.

Posted by: Jark Nov 28 2013, 09:22 PM

Its the behind the scenes being put on bittorrent, not the video proper. No word on a premiere date yet.

Posted by: ❅ APRIL JINGLE ❅ Dec 1 2013, 11:14 PM

If Lady Gaga released the video for 'Do What U Want' in the next day or two, plus with the likely boost from her Alan Carr performance on Friday, should could be in with a chance of challenging for #1 next week. Unfortunately, it won't work like that in reality and we'll probably be waiting another couple of weeks for the video!

Posted by: Jark Dec 9 2013, 08:39 AM

Alan Carr performance was utterly sensational. The third classic Gags performance we've had this era, after DWUW @ AMAs and Applause on Music Station. She's on fire/

Why would she move on though? 'Do What U Want' is clearly still hanging around in many countries but needs the video to try and cement it as a long running hit. I don't understand why she hasn't released the video though. It was filmed in November wasn't it? That's still plenty of time to edit and re-do anything she's not happy with. She just needs to get it out ASAP.

It's too soon to move onto Gypsy, especially in the US!

Posted by: G R I F F Mar 15 2014, 09:12 PM

QUOTE
If this video ever gets released, it will certainly ruin what’s left of Gaga’s career. Even without R. Kelly, the video is still nasty. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Interscope executives saw the part where R. Kelly pretends to piss ARTPOP BBQ sauce on Gaga’s stomach, then licks it up. I can only assume Gaga didn’t know R. Kelly’s history of peeing on underaged teenagers.

In any case, the video is visually interesting with simple, but appealing backgrounds: one is pure white, one has a Star Wars theme, one has a digital theme, and then there is one with a rainbow. The colors look like they are coming at you in 3D, but they don’t take away from the main visuals. I wish they did.

The video starts off with (yet) another Madonna homage: Lady Gaga is dressed up in an America flag outfit, just like Madonna’s 1990 Rock The Vote commercial. As the music fades in, both R. Kelly and Terry Richardson (!) are slapping Gaga’s (rather tight) buttocks. Then, as Terry leaves the scene, Lady Gaga takes off the outfit and reveals black lingerie. She looks quite good, I must admit. It’s obvious she has been working out a lot.

At first, there is some relatively (when compared to the rest of the video) innocent role playing. It is very similar to Madonna’s (again) Human Nature video as R. Kelly tries to dominate Gaga, but she keeps getting away. At one point, she pushes him down. When he gets back up, that’s where the action begins.

R. Kelly can be seen humping Gaga from in front, grinding her from behind (while spanking her) and even simulating eating her out. Gaga seems to control all of this and her main point in the video is that she is the one in control of all the shots, sexually or not. Gaga goes under his legs and lies on the floor. Then, we see what is possibly the most disturbing scene ever in a music video.

R. Kelly pulls out a tube of “ARTPOP” BBQ sauce that he slowly moves between his legs to represent a penis. Then, he squirts it all out on Lady Gaga, as if he is having an orgasm. Lady Gaga rubs the BBQ sauce all over her body and even licks it with her fingers. R. Kelly then bends down and proceeds to lick the BBQ sauce. Suddenly, we see Lady Gaga dressed as an old and fat Lady lying on a rainbow-colored bed to imply that it was all a dream. She then looks at her finger and sees some of the BBQ sauce that was spilled on her during the dream. She looks at the camera, screams, and the video ends.

Information about the video has been revealed as it's finally confirmed that it was scrapped due to being too controversial.

QUOTE(Digital Spy)
The New York Post's Page Six reports that the video sees the pair play out a scenario in which Kelly plays Gaga's doctor.

Gaga allegedly asks Kelly: "Will I ever be able to walk again?" with the singer replying: "Yes, if you let me do whatever I want with your body." The 'doctor' then adds: "I'm putting you under, and when you wake up, you're going to be pregnant."

The video was reportedly shot back in September to be released in December. In January, Gaga posted a statement on her Little Monsters website, blaming bad management for the video's delay.

Glad it was scrapped if it featured that scene then...

They definitely should have just recorded a second video. But I imagine Gaga was fighting tooth and nail to get that "art" released and once it was clear that wasn't gonna happen she had no further interest in the song.

Best it never was released now tbh.

Although tbh I have a weird feeling it’ll leak one day.

Still the song was a BOP but Xtina version will be the one I’ll go back to now in future.

I'm just surprised that anyone is trying to pretend they didn't know about him. He's had a well-known pattern for decades now.

You have to wonder how many people she fired in anger for letting her ever do this as she wants to sweep the awards season...

Posted by: HausofTove Jan 10 2019, 07:09 AM

Lady Gaga has apologized for her 2013 collaboration with R. Kelly and promised to remove the song "Do What U Want" from iTunes and all streaming services.

"I stand behind these women 1000%, believe them, know they are suffering and in pain, and feel strongly that their voices should be heard and taken seriously," Gaga told her fans. "What I am hearing about the allegations against R. Kelly is absolutely horrifying and indefensible."

She continued: "As a victim of sexual assault myself, I made both the song and video at a dark time in my life, my intention was to create something extremely defiant and provocative because I was angry and still hadn’t processed the trauma that had occurred in my own life. The song is called 'Do What U Want (With My Body),' I think it's clear how explicitly twisted my thinking was at the time. If I could go back and have a talk with my younger self I'd tell her to go through the therapy I have since then, so that I could understand the confused post-traumatic state that I was in- or if therapy was not available to me or anyone in my situation-to seek help, and speak as openly and honestly as possible about what we’ve been through.

Gaga then promised to remove the song, which served as the second single from ARTPOP and was later re-recorded with Christina Aguilera, from iTunes and streaming platforms.

She added: "I can't go back, but I can go forward and continue to support women, men, and people of all sexual identities, and of all races, who are victims of sexual assault. I have demonstrated my stance on this issue and others many times throughout my career. I share this not to make excuses for myself, but to explain. Til it happens to you, you don’t know how it feels. But I do know how I feel now. I intend to remove this song off of iTunes and other streaming platforms and will not be working with him again. I’m sorry, both for my poor judgment when I was young, and for not speaking out sooner. I love you."

Good to see that she's spoken out about this, taking responsibility for the decision she made at the time and apologised.

Not surprising that she's made the call to have the song removed, but I wonder if that'll include the Christina Aguilera version too? It's just, R. Kelly has a songwriting credit, so he'd stand to continue earning off the song if Christina's version remains up. Hmm~

Posted by: tommie Jan 10 2019, 08:31 AM

Yet, it will always be seen as a cynical awards ploy.

It must all bug her endlessly - why didn't she pull it before? Or for GaGa - couldn't they wait until March to air that damn documentary?

There's literally no good way around it for her, but I guess this is what she had to go with. Bless.

Posted by: Theo. Jan 10 2019, 08:57 AM

I literally haven't listened to the R Kelly version in years so that can stay pressed/cancelled. The Xtine version remains a bop

Posted by: tommie Jan 10 2019, 09:28 AM

Honestly, in a weird way I find this fascinating - because I don't think there's a way she could've responded to this appropriately without coming off as cynical.

How would YOU have responded to this?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 10 2019, 09:38 AM

It's such a shame she couldn't have just had ANYONE other than R. Kelly on that song.

Posted by: danuary Jan 10 2019, 09:53 AM

Hopefully the Xtina version remains up (which presumably R Kelly wouldn't have any credit on as I imagine he only wrote his verse which the lyrics to got replaced?) but that article makes it seem like she regrets the song altogether so I imagine that'll be removed too.

She credited him on every version so they'll likely delete all traces of it.

Her statement is heartfelt and exactly what was needed from her. It's still one of my favourite Gaga songs but this is the right thing to do.

Posted by: Klumzee Jan 10 2019, 10:18 AM

It always didn't sit right with me how the lyrics were empowering for anyone who's the victim of a sexual assault. I'm glad it wasn't just me being naive and that Gaga agrees too that it was a questionable stance to take. I think this the first song in my memory since I've been following popular music that a song has been taken down or looked back on in a bad light so that will be an odd feeling, especially as it was a major song in the ARTPOP era and a reasonably popular song with the GP. Does sound like it is for the best whatever way you look at it and I think her approach to tackling this has been spot on.

Just waiting for artists to do the same with 6ix9ine in the future...

rolleyes.gif bore off.

I like that she's apologised. For me as long as she wasn't the one doing the assault and/or making excuses for him, I can forgive her/anyone else in her position. It was 6 years ago and she has spoken about her state of mind during ARTPOP numerous times before. She's apologised and you can tell how genuine it is. It's just pissing me off that she is the only one to be receiving the backlash for a song with him, when there's literally about 10+ other artists who have done the same and haven't been under fire for it.

Now I'm waiting for Rami Malek's apology for working with Bryan Singer

I think the statement was pretty much expected (although that "when I was young" bothers me, as it was 6 years ago) and as DWUW is not her tour staple etc it wasn't probably a tough decision to make for her, also because the solo version and Xtina duet exist too.

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 Jan 10 2019, 12:14 PM

People were young (and dumb x) all those years back. It's why I (personally) don't agree with James Gunn's backlash and Kevin Hart's Oscars backlash. It'd be very different if they were unapologetic or their tweets were recent, but they thankfully were apologetic and have had to apologise for it many a time before the backlash started. You can clearly tell how much they've grown and changed as people. People do change and for the better.

James Gunn's in particular. It was just very dark jokes. Pretty sure I and others on here have joked and laughed at very similar/worse memes etc..

I am not forgiving, however, if A- they're not apologetic for their words and/or actions, B- they stand up for the accuser despite plenty of evidence suggesting otherwise (*cough*Nicki*cough*) or C- their actions were inexcusable (R Kelly, Chris Brown, Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein, Bryan Singer, XXXTentacion, 6ix9ine etc..)

So Gaga working with R Kelly despite it being known that he was that sort of person, is forgivable, for the fact she has apologised and you can quite clearly tell she meant it, imo.

I'm not gonna be a blind stan here, it was and still is disappointing that she worked with him. As said, it's always been known what he was (and this documentary is just unearthing even more details). However, she clearly had regrets pretty much the whole time, what with the whole Xtina version thing and cancelling the video, and apologising and taking the song down is about all she can do to show that. Of course, she shouldn't have worked with him in the first place when whispers of his appalling acts were always around but I hate that the women who mistakenly worked with or supported these men are getting more flack than some of the actual men laugh.gif As said in her statement, it was a tough time in her life and something that brings back really bad memories, you can tell how much it means to her. She is clearly being totally genuine, she can't go back and change working with him or erase the song from existence and everyone's minds, what else is she meant to do?!

At the heart of it all, why don't people channel this energy towards the actual abusers and paedos instead of a woman who has clearly regretted working with him this whole time? It's so tiring that in this world, every little thing from years ago is pulled up for certain people, yet so many awful people are still allowed to get away with the actual things they've done. Like Jonjo said, if she had been making excuses the whole time and fervently supporting him as a friend or something I'd understand it a lot more. Plus exactly, SO many artists (Beyonce, Jay-Z, Jennifer Hudson and Justin Bieber, for one) have worked with him and aren't getting the same flack for it. It's easy to say it's a ploy for awards season, but what was she supposed to do? Stay quiet until after the Oscars and keep getting shit for it?! I think it's just one of those things where it happens to co-incide at probably not the best time, the documentary series being on while she is in the spotlight for ASIB at award ceremonies. She had to speak out and she has, I don't and couldn't want more than that. It's a very different thing to have (probably apprehensively, given how she has clearly always felt) worked with someone than to have actually abused someone, supported them or made light of the situations.

Yes, the focus should be on the abuser. Women are always at fault when things like this happen and she's just the most prominent one right now. I agree with holding people accountable, and she should have made the statement sooner, but it can be counterproductive when it distracts from the main issue. At least the press can move on and focus on R Kelly himself again.

My problem was always the fact that the song, feature, potential video and director were clearly misguided and calculated attempts at creating something as controversial as possible. She and her team knew what they were doing. Thankfully the video wasn't released, she has different management and is clearly in a much better headspace.

Posted by: Klaus Jan 10 2019, 12:36 PM

Yeh, wasn’t she in a really bad headspace during the whole ARTPOP era? Not really excusing collaborating with that but, yeh, people are waaaaay too happy to blame others.

The Christina version should hopefully stay on iTunes.

I can’t say I listen to the song regularly and I’m a Gaga STAN. But I did appreciate it today and realised it was an actual bop strong chorus and I enjoyed all versions of the song too, Xtina r Kelly and the solo version. The solo version performance on Alan Carr is an amazing performance and one of if not the best of the entire ARTPOP era based on vocals.

As far as ARTPOPs singles went I actually preferred Applause which I guess is a very unpopular opinion on here laugh.gif

Posted by: Cody Underwood Jan 11 2019, 03:30 AM

Can’t she just release the studio edit of the solo version? I get the Xtina version is the only other released version available (and it’s probably gone now) but I’m not really a fan of 2014 oversinging Xtina blink.gif

And I know I’m late on this but I just wanna say that I’m also not a fan of this whole “guilt by association” thing. I’m glad that Gaga spoke out against it and took the necessary actions, but if she’s still getting the vitriol that she’s getting and we’d want others to do the same, then... is anyone really unproblematic? We’ve all heard an R. Kelly song, remix, sample at least once in our life. Anytime someone badly wails “I believe I can fly” is still significant exposure. If we’re supposed to give the same energy using guilt by association, then unless you’re living in a rock, then you’re problematic and you should be getting that same amount of vitriol as well, and we’re all hypocrites. That’s why this mindset fails.

Posted by: SKOB Jan 11 2019, 08:11 AM

It wasn't tough decision for her I think, the song is not among her biggest hits and has always been a bit hmmm despite the empowering vibe. But she has so many more important songs of empowerment.

I don't know if y'all know that but DWUW was a Gaga solo song, they put R. Kelly's vocals on the track before she finished the album and gave it to the label to release.

The solo version of the song was randomly uploaded last year on Youtube (so I don't know why they haven't put the solo version of the song on the album yet, as R. Kelly has no credits in the solo version of the song and he will not earn any profit from that version)

Listen to the original version of DWUW below:

The Christina version of this came on in a club I went to Saturday night. Literally started as I walked onto the dancefloor and it made me realise how much the song is an absolute banger. It's such a shame that it wasn't Christina penned from the start because I feel it would've continued to mature into one of her biggest streamers and certainly ARTPOP's biggest by miles. Or she needs to add Christina's onto the album on Spotify but I assume R. Kelly would still get royalties from that version too?

Posted by: Sour Candy Oct 10 2022, 08:23 PM

I'm fine with it not being included in the album - it would feel wrong if it suddenly appeared there after all these years.
It is sad that such a bop will be destined to be forgotten though. Cannot see her ever performing it live again.

Weirdly I just listened to the Xtina version an hour or so ago (rarely do as like you say it's not on the album on Spotify) and it's such a banger. Love to hear that version in a club or bar some day.

Perhaps the darkest moment of her career, I'm glad that video was never released and the R.Kelly version is no longer on digital versions. But I agree, if she had Xtina on the original, it would've been massive. The Voice performance alone gives me shivers.

What was she thinking no.gif It should have been Christina from the START!!! Release Gypsy first, smash hit, then this, second single, then SEX DREAMMSSSS next, revamped, maybe with the Spice Girls, and then ARTPOP the sang, and dinish with Applause with a tour video.

This is kind of an iconic run of songs, wbk x (with or without Spice Girls)
