3 ~ Idina Menzel - Let It Go

That's one letter more commentary than this song deserves but OKAY as it's in the top 3 I guess I'd better say a few words. 'Let It Go' has inexplicably become a big phenomenon since the release of the Disney film 'Frozen' in 2013, for some reason it didn't reach its peak in the chart until well after the seasonally appropriate time and it was still in the charts throughout the whole of summer. The song THANKFULLY never made the top 10, stalling at #11 on three occasions, although its sheer persistence meant that it ended as one of the year's 10 biggest sellers (although hilariously knocked down to 13th on the 'official' year end chart by streaming which was surprisingly unfavourable to the track) and persistence pays off even more in this list, as that undeniably impressive chart run puts it up with the Pharrells and John Legends and Clean Bandits of the year. Why anyone would tolerate this physically painful song is utterly beyond me but for whatever ungodly reason this seems to be a minority opinion on this website so you demon spawns continue to enjoy it while I re-evaluate why I bother posting here.

3 ~ Paloma Faith - A Perfect Contradiction
(2-4-6-10-2-3-4-4-4-3-4-4-5-8-8-9-11-13-16-10-11-6-7-9-7-12-14-16-18-19-22-19-18-27-35-11-23-24-22-15-14-9-...)
3754pts ~ 42wks

Tracks in singles list:
21 Only Love Can Hurt Like This
99 Can't Rely On You
564 Ready For The Good Life

The top of the albums list last year was completely packed with albums that spent the entire year in the chart (of which there are actually only two in 2014, though would have been three if it weren't for 'Halcyon' going to budget in the very last week), so I was actually a bit surprised that this managed to end up so high this year. Ensuring there is an actual 2014 album in the top 5 of 2014 is the third album by Paloma Faith. Radio 1 completely giving up on her didn't stop 'Can't Rely On You' being a top 10 hit ahead of 'A Perfect Contradiction' debuting at #2 (matching the peak of the previous album, she's still yet to have a #1 album). The radio megahit (although again ignored by Radio 1) 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' secured this album as a major seller and her first EVER UK #1 single with Sigma later in the year won't have hurt either.

2 ~ John Legend - All Of Me
(72-28-29-9-8-6-3-5-2-4-4-4-5-4-3-6-6-5-10-10-9-11-13-14-20-19-17-15-19-19-24-23-22-23-29-18-22-23-26-4-14-22-31-34-40-41-44-...)
3928pts ~ 47wks

What a very appropriate song for my last section of 2014 - the official CHART SAVIOUR

John Legend's powerful piano ballad All of Me entered the top 40 for the first time following some promotion on The Jonathan Ross show at the start of the year, before climbing into the top 10 two weeks later. Why? Nobody knows unsure.gif (jk, it was because of Dancing On Ice...this almost became the new What Now that week laugh.gif) It then failed to leave the top 10 for weeks, and even then has only left the entire top 40 for just two weeks since (it re-entered in the first week of 2014). The song has absolutely failed to get old with me, it's sung beautifully and John Legend has an incredible voice. The track shot up to #4 again following his X Factor performance laugh.gif Before tumbling back down relatively quickly cry.gif The track has given us some iconic Jameela moments, including learning that it's her song for both cake and pizza

2 ~ Ellie Goulding - Halcyon
(...-1-1-2-1-2-3-2-4-3-2-10-15-11-16-14-18-22-19-22-17-18-26-30-39-36-29-25-20-10-9-13-7-12-16-21-22-27-28-39-37-41-44-47-49-52-83-88-96-92-66-72-x)
3772pts ~ 51wks

Tracks in singles list:
20 How Long Will I Love You
106 Burn
154 Goodness Gracious
414 Flashlight (DJ Fresh feat. Ellie Goulding)
544 I Need Your Love (Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding)
592 Explosions

So perhaps shockingly, Ellie Goulding isn't #1, or even close, despite being top 100 for every week bar one (thanks to it moving to budget in the final week smile.gif) and top 75 for the vast majority of its top 100 weeks too. Halcyon surprisingly climbed to #1 in the first week of 2014, having previously stalled at #2 in 2012 and #3 in 2013 with the Halcyon Days re-release, therefore giving Ellie her second #1 album out of two. Also surprisingly, this has now gone on to outsell Lights, despite that being a big seller already, and isn't far off a million copies. Impressive stuff, obviously helped by her first EVER UK #1, Burn and its follow-up, How Long Will I Love You.

Over to Bray for the final section of 2014 ohmy.gif

1 ~ Pharrell - Happy
(...-2-1-1-2-3-2-3-2-1-2-3-4-6-6-7-7-10-12-13-15-12-11-14-17-18-17-19-16-18-22-24-25-27-29-30-32-33-32-35-37-40-37-35-33-40-43-53-58-63-59-57-51-...)
4113pts ~ 52wks

Well there was never exactly going to be any competition here was there? John Legend did enough to have easily been #1 in any other year (quite possibly literally - the highest annual points score achieved previously in the download era, and since 2002 at least, was 3631 by Gotye in 2012, so if anything had John Legend or even Idina Menzel or Clean Bandit beat it's probably something like 'My Way'), but 'All Of Me' falls some way short of 'Happy' which is pretty much undeniably the song of the year by any metric. That despite the fact it actually hit #1 for the first time in 2013 of course. 'Happy' returned to the top spot for a couple more weeks in January then astonishingly went back to #1 AGAIN a little over a month later thanks to the BRITs, making it one of a very select few #1s in history to get there on three separate occasions. It also has the record for the longest consecutive run in the top 40 of all time, clocking in an incredible 49 weeks (it spent a 50th week top 40 in the first week of 2015). Pharrell is truly a god among men. Despite all of this incredible statistical domination you may be hard pressed to find anyone who claims this to be a particularly special song (I like it a lot but even I don't claim it as a musical highlight of the year), it just appealed enough to a ridiculously wide base of people and dominated the radio airwaves enough to make it arguably one of the biggest hit singles of all time. WD Pharrell.

1 ~ London Grammar - If You Wait
(...-11-10-8-11-7-4-3-6-8-8-9-10-13-11-9-11-16-16-23-24-14-10-18-24-24-22-13-16-27-14-15-17-19-23-33-23-25-29-36-33-35-34-41-38-19-40-54-66-62-72-64-60-...)
4014pts ~ 52wks

Tracks in singles list:
214 Strong
291 Hey Now
379 Nightcall

So we have a similar sitch to last year where the #1 single is pretty obvious from the beginning but the album #1 is a little less predictable - in fact I'm not sure anyone would have called London Grammar having the #1 here? By quite a considerable margin as well. I actually had to double check the figures here to make sure they're definitely correct as 'If You Wait' certainly doesn't seem like it was the single most dominant album of the year. It is correct though, so here we go, and what an absolutely wonderful #1. The album was released in the same week as Arctic Monkeys' album so was doomed to a #2 peak, at one stage in 2014 it looked like it may have finally got to #1 but alas stalled again at #3. Presumably thanks to a steady stream of people discovering the band (they weren't exactly a massive name when the album came out and arguably still aren't, see how not one of their songs is in the top 200 of the other countdown) it remained in the top 40 for the majority of the year, gradually building up an incredibly impressive points tally. It started to fall off a bit in Q4 but had done enough by then to assert itself as the #1 on the points chart. WD London Grammar. (heart.gif)

And so we come to the conclusion on the 13th of January - and that's of 2015, not 2016. ohmy.gif

Wow. Never expected London Grammar to have amassed enough points to be the number one album. Shame that "Let It Go" didn't make it a brilliant double but "Happy" is decent enough.

Thanks bre for the thread and most (well nearly all to be honest) of the comments!

It's strange If You Wait was so much more dominant this year, I can't think of an obvious reason why either (I guess Strong won an Ivor Novello award last year (though that was 2013)?). Great to see it up here though, only listened recently but it's very good and ofc. all the singles remain incredible wub.gif

Great thread/teamwork guys and finished early for the first time in forever! (kink.gif, but srsly stop denying Frozen/Queendina, you heathens)

Shocked but definitely pleased at London Grammar being #1! There's only 'Strong' and 'Wasting My Young Years' that I'd single out to go listen to but the album as a whole works superbly.

By the way I am compiling a separate list for the 2015 version of this thread which is based on the sales only chart - won't do two separate countdowns of course but I'll post it alongside the final recap next year for comparison. There probably won't be much of a difference with the songs right at the top.
