It's 4 weeks at #1 for Olivia Rodrigo. She continues to drop at a slower pace than Glass Animals so it looks like she's sitting pretty neatly at the top. After getting shoved out in a close week, SZA's back up to a new peak of #7, while Tiesto gets his 2nd #8 hit with "The Business", likely to become his highest ever charter next week. The only new arrival this week is from Ava Max which is moderately interesting to me only because radio is also playing Topic's new song which also samples the same ATC song. "Around The World (La La La La La)" peaked at #11 here in case you were wondering.

After 6 months, The Kid LAROI reaches the top spot by virtue of there being no new competition. It makes for an interesting stat as he becomes the youngest solo Australian artist to reach the top spot, unlucky for Reece Mastin to have only hit #2. The top debut thus goes down at #18 courtesy of Arlo Parks who I didn't realise had so much fanfare in Australia but she has put out some good singles it must be said. Violent Soho & BLACKPINK return thanks to a big vinyl boost, and Steven Wilson has now charted more solo albums in the top 50 than Porcupine Tree. Next week this country is still called Australia so Foo Fighters are going to debut at #1.

Phenomenal for Laroi to finally hit the #1 album, makes up for the unlucky #2 peak of WITHOUT YOU!

5 weeks at #1 for Olivia Rodrigo. She actually is now dropping faster than Glass Animals though their Spotify numbers are so erratic that it's hard to keep track. Both now have a new challenger OTW with Lil Tjay & 6LACK vaulting instantly to #3 on the Spotify chart. "Calling My Phone" has been kinda stuck there since then but the top two are now no longer sitting as comfortably ahead of the pack. Tiesto got to #8 in 2014 with "Red Lights" and now with no help from Rivers Cuomo or Pink Siifu he's gone to a new high of #4 with "The Business". The Weeknd also jumps to #7 with "Save Your Tears" which makes it the 2nd highest charter from "After Hours". "Blinding Lights" had the chance to tie the top 10 weeks record but dismally failed, so stream "Trilogy" and be disappointed by the lack of Aaliyah sample. Cardi B debuts at #20 with "Up" and it seems like up is the word as it looks to slightly improve next week. It's the only new entry this week and I also must correct myself from last week, Topic is sampling ATB, not ATC, I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder.

Every Foo Fighters album in the 21st century goes to #1. This also includes their Greatest Hits set which puts them up to 7 #1's. This week's chart mystery is a question about what ARIA did with The Weeknd's streaming figures. In the US and NZ where the rules about track equivalent streams are more set in stone, "After Hours" collapsed as all of the "Blinding Lights", "Heartless", "In Your Eyes" and "Save Your Tears" streams were siphoned, but over here the album gains which admittedly makes the most sense outside of the context of knowing too much about how the album chart works. So one would think that maybe those tracks haven't been siphoned, and yet "The Highlights" still debuts at #2 so go figure. Actually the same thing happened in the UK so I dunno. I can express proper West Australian pride this week as our local legends Psychedelic Porn Crumpets debut at #4, a big jump from their #31 debut in 2019. Just behind is Australian pop stalwart Kate Ceberano, who had her biggest hit single & album back in 1989, and this week has her highest charting album since 2007. The more contemporary Odette also sneaks in with her 2nd album, "Amends" from that album is a banger. Next week is very confusing to me because surely The Rubens couldn't be coming for their first #1 album in 2021? They could be joined at the upper end by The Pretty Reckless and the soundtrack from that gross Sia movie.

I can't believe I'm saying this but the 6 week #1 gang is back! Luckily for Olivia she's already done enough to qualify for the Tournament Of Champions but it looks like this is her last week at #1 as bafflingly the world can't get enough of a 6 month old mid-tier Glass Animals song. Perhaps the true oddity is that depending on how things hold on from here, these are the two songs competing for the End Of Year 2021 standings, as I can't yet comprehend the notion of another challenger, and the longer they spend in the top 2, the further this is cemented. Incidentally we have a new arrival at #3 from Lil Tjay & 6LACK. Lil Tjay has of course previously had a top 5 hit last year except no ARIA didn't credit him on "Mood Swings", so I think the only time he's charted proper is on Polo G's "Pop Out" which briefly touched upon the top 100 a year ago. 6LACK arguably had a bigger hit in "OTW" which peaked at #27 but actually made the ARIA End Of Year chart which "Mood Swings" did not, possibly because ARIA weren't counting it for a few weeks, an impressive instance of two unrelated chart errors on the same single. HVME's sanding down of "goosebumps" is gifted top 10 real estate though it's a long, long way away from ever outselling the original version which never even made the top 40. The first person born in the 2000s to make the ARIA Chart was Willow Smith, and now (I think) the first person born in the 2010s to make the ARIA Chart is Willow...Sage Hart. "Cover Me In Sunshine" will likely retreat as sales buoy it less, but it is picking up streams so there's hope for it. There's an alternate timeline where "Love Story" is the most unlucky song ever as though it did manage 2 non-consecutive weeks at #1 in 2009, those weeks were surrounded by a further 11 weeks at #2, which even in the streaming era is an absurd/never-before-seen amount when you put the two together. Anyway the new version is at #21. I imagine it must be unfathomable for Masked Wolf that the song he uploaded to triple j Unearthed nearly 2 years ago now has more Spotify streams than any Hilltop Hoods song, and now we await to see when media platforms pounce upon the fact that he's Australian and turn "Astronaut In The Ocean" into a long running hit like they did with Sam Fischer last year. There's also a Dua Lipa song or something I haven't heard yet.

Perhaps the most absurd thing I'm typing is that in 2021 The Rubens have a #1 album. It was close to a decade ago that they first made their breakthrough with their novel blues-inspired rock, getting them a lot of fans in the coming years. They would then lose a lot of fans soon after as they morphed into a bland simulacra of themselves and face the mightiest hype backlash when too many (for anyone else's liking) people genuinely thought that "Hoops" was the best song of 2015. The state of charts in 2020 means that they released a single at the end of 2019 which did nothing until it was arbitrarily put on Spotify playlists to allow it to spend nearly an entire calendar year in the charts, while nothing else they released after or during that time has even come close to charting. Anyway, releasing an album in February works wonders for them and gets a #1 album. Sandwiched between me berating Australian artists for being bad, shout out to Tasmanian icons Luca Brasi who score their highest ever chart peak at #7 with their 5th album. There's also a vinyl re-release that brings The Amity Affliction's first ever #1 album "Chasing Ghosts" back into the top 10. Sia's movie is offensive, ableist and belongs in the bin. The curse of British rappers continues as slowthai does particularly well to get his first chart entry at #11, which is to say he joins the club of UK rappers who can't quite crack the top 10. Spacey Jane re-release their old EP again, and randomly there's a White Stripes greatest hits set. Florida Georgia Line just eek out a top 50 peak but it's a significant come down after two #7 peaking albums. Next week should see high new entries from Tash Sultana & Adam Harvey.

Australia is proving themselves to be suckers, close to 2 years after "Sucker" first hit #1. Back in January, Dave from Glass Animals said that if "Heat Waves" made it to #1 in the triple j Hottest 100, that he'd get an ass tattoo of Australia, which was brought up again when they inevitably did. It's now March with no proof that this has happened, and Australia has continued to buy into the grift as they have a #1 single. This is yet another case of "Mood", where the song naturally peaked weeks before it actually hit #1, when it was stuck behind a behemoth hit that fell faster. With the Hottest 100 win so long ago, that's a lot of weeks of tanking anchor streams (note the extent that Spacey Jane have dropped down the chart since then), but they've maintained inertia assumably thanks to growing global success. Well that and erotic Dream Minecraft fanfiction. On the topic of those behemoth hits, Cardi B has actually shot up this week but doesn't look like carrying that momentum. Possibly taking momentum instead is P!nk, who only drops a single spot as she's made huge streaming strides that'll pay off next week. Her recent collaborator Keith Urban is riding high in a similar manner of big first week sales too, alongside Amy Shark on a song you can have an opinion on before you hear it because Ed Sheeran co-wrote it. Masked Wolf makes a big jump and looks to do so again next week, possibly allowing the unlikely circumstance of 2 Australian rappers in the top 10 at the same time. Our latest ARIA shenanigans is that former 2 and a half hit wonder ATB is back with a new hit on his own. Also just like P!nk & Keith Urban, we've got another pairing of collaborators in back to back weeks, as Polo G follows Lil Tjay to get his first top 50 hit, "Martin & Gina" having spent ages in the Spotify top 200 before finally moving on up now.

Tash Sultana gets a first ever #1 album this week. Their first album was released on the same week as Eminem's "Kamikaze" with probably higher sales than this week. It means that once again nearly a year after it began, we can add to the list of Australian artists keeping Dua Lipa at #2 as she's now had 6 weeks there. She's riding high on re-release shenanigans, as is Ariana Grande who's up to #3 this week. Actually it's possible that "test drive" has been left off the chart this week though I'm not 100% certain. BTS ride on physical re-release shenanigans. Adam Harvey picks up his 6th top 10 album, now 3 of them have reached #10 specifically. Daft Punk are particularly high with "Random Access Memories" but not any other albums which makes me wonder if they've had a conveniently timed vinyl release because otherwise they've gotten a lot of sales very quickly in response to the news. Next week could be a race for #1 between Architects, Alice Cooper, and some Australian band.

How do you do fellow millennials, Glass Animals are still #1 with no end in sight. Although maybe the true millennial action is seeing P!nk rocket up into the top 10, because she's been on the radio as long as I can remember, and now I'm old enough that I might too theoretically have a child who is old enough to have a recording career. I'm reminded of a classic ARIA gaffe from a year ago as Giveon gets his first top 50 chart entry...because "Chicago Freestyle" was never let on the chart last year. Next week ARIA have confirmed that all 3 of Drake's new songs will chart however, though don't expect them too high because they've not gotten off to a hot start in Australia (like most new releases tbh). An exception to this notion is Peach PRC's "Josh" which immediately got to around #30 on Spotify on day one, and crashed until it got more support. Peach PRC is a TikTok star who seems to be doing a better job at leveraging her popularity on that platform to a music career than Mia Rodriguez has. Also that Riton delight has entered the top 50 which if you want to be partially annoyed, the original Nightcrawlers track never did. Oh and if it's of any interest, this is the week that "Someone You Loved" hits 100 weeks in the top 50, and also the week that Tones and I hits 91 consecutive weeks, surpassing Lewis's 90, for now.

Australia loves a bit of metalcore, and Britons Architects now have their first #1 album over here. This is possibly the first time that the #1 album, and the #1 single['s album] have both gotten 'NOT GOOD' Fantano reviews (though he was complimentary of "Heat Waves" on its own). They've been big hitters for a while, with their 2016 album only missing #1 because it was released alongside Flume's "Skin". Their last album 'only' got to #8 but that was on a competitive week where even Muse could only get to #7 stuck behind 3 Queen albums. On the bright side, that week they did land one spot ahead of anti-vax dickhead Ziggy Alberts. Architects continue their pattern of beating problematic Australian artists, as the only known band funded by offshore detention centres, Sheppard, land at #2. On the bright side, their dad was arrested for tax fraud earlier this year. Also debuting high this week is Alice Cooper, who scores his best chart position since 1977 with "Detroit Stories" at #3. Julien Baker gets her first ever top 50 album, as does Madison Beer though she's never had the chance before now. Australia continues to be arguably NOFX's strongest market as they land at #25. They've had 7 albums hit the top 30 and their highest peak is #19. Their most iconic moment in my too-young perspective is when they landed in the 2009 Hottest 100 with a song about an awkward encounter with Tegan & Sara...11 places above Tegan & Sara in that list. King Gizzard chalk up their arbitrary digital download based peak for their new album, so perhaps it'll peak higher later but their last album still hasn't done that either so it truly is a crapshoot, same goes for the new Nick Cave album. Slowly Slowly add another disc to their 2020 album and re-enter this week. Kings Of Leon will vie for their 4th #1 album, while A Day To Remember and The Wiggles will also make impressions.

3 weeks at #1 for lying meme lords Glass Animals. We seem to have locked into another of those patterns where no one seems ready to move on from any of these songs, not helped by the fact that most of this week's debuts are on a downward slide instead. Drake fairs the best on week one, with "What's Next" getting in the top 10, but he's looking to be overtaken quickly by the likely team up of Anderson .Paak & Bruno Mars, and the unlikely team up of Justin Bieber and Gotye. This is the part where I proudly proclaim that unlike everywhere else, Anderson .Paak already had a top 10 hit here years ago because we're super cool and I'm going to dodge admitting that it was on "Dance Off" by Macklemore. On the other hand, "Dang!" with Mac Miller was more popular here than pretty much anywhere else so we have that going for us. Masked Wolf nearly goes top 10 this week, but as the one song up high on the chart with big upward momentum, it's only a formality next week. "Friday" unfortunately becomes Riton's highest charting single. Back in 2014, Spotify published some curious statistics, one of which denoted which songs were most uniquely popular in different countries. Among the obvious Australian songs and MKTO's "Thank You", I believe the top uniquely popular song in Australia that year was "I'm Ready" by AJR, a top 5 hit. Since then Australia has largely ignored their antics but they return to the top 50 this week with "Bang!" long after it peaked in the US (though it must be the only song in history to ever peak on US airplay long before it did on Spotify streaming).

I choose to believe that Kings Of Leon would have called their album "Non-Fungible Token" except it has 6 syllables so they couldn't. Anyway, "WALLS" debuted at #3 back in 2016 behind a Jessica Mauboy soundtrack and a Hillsong album, something of a comedown after every album since "Only By The Night" has hit #1. With the aid of a dreadfully slow week, they're back with their 4th #1 album. This is only the 2nd time ever that former Hottest 100 #1 artists are leading both charts (ie we're not counting future Hottest 100 winners like when Billie Eilish was #1 on both charts), after a single week in 2004 when Spiderbait & Jet were at #1. In the time honoured tradition of Australian cynicism, much like how their ARIA Hall Of Fame entry coincided with a new album to plug, The Wiggles' recent triple j Like A Version stint does the same, as a Greatest Hits set gives them their equal highest charting album ever at #3. This has possibly killed off their 2016 Best Of set which was the 18th biggest Australian album of 2020. A Day To Remember's last album went to #1 though now they have to settle for #9. The Smith Street Band are possibly trying to give King Gizz a run for their money in terms of albums charted lately, as another live album turns up at #11. It's not even the only live album this week as DMA'S also have one lower down. An early contingent in the time honoured tradition of dudes with guitars and two first names, Pete Murray has a new EP debuting at #22. Back in the 2000s he had 3 consecutive #1 albums with huge sales. Canberra icon Genesis Owusu put out his first album which I only know the singles from but I'm told the rest is also very good. Next week is so barren that Dua Lipa might return to #1. She might also debut with another milking of this album era or something I don't really know. Top debut will probably be by noted ditch digger, witch burner and back slammer Rob Zombie, and perhaps Giveon & The Paper Kites will show up too.

5 weeks at #1 for Glass Animals. It remains precarious to see if they can become another illustrious (albeit primarily aided by playlists) member of the 6 weeks at #1 club, because Justin Bieber is riding pretty closely behind with "Peaches", the 2nd best song of this title to grace the top 40, a statement I'm making having not listened to it yet. Enough have been indoctrinated by the teaches of "Peaches" that it's currently #1 on Spotify and Apple, though its lagging sales could hold it off. Just like last year, "Hold On" is the Justin Bieber track whose organic rise up the charts is baked into a well timed album release to maintain momentum, getting into the top 10. Justin Bieber also commands every other debut in the top 50 this week. That means 9 songs of his are in the top 50, compared to 5 when "Changes" was released, though two of those weren't actually on the album.

Anyway, Justin Bieber is also #1 on the album chart. It is truly impossible to see major stars suffer a setback because even though a year ago he managed to miss out on a #1 debut, another album in tow a year later has amended that irregularity. Sitting on a peculiar point of this observation is Lana Del Rey, who after 4 #1 albums in a row, is unable to wield the positive feedback of her last album to take her back to the top. Evidently she should have released it last week. Right behind, Troy Cassar-Daley is scoring his 6th top 10 album, and highest solo appearance. Notably in 2013, his collaborative album with Adam Harvey was declared a #1 debut until a counting error revealed by ARIA the next day corrected Kanye West to #1. Middle Kids released their first album in 2018 to the tune of a #10 debut. Now they're back with their 2nd and it takes them a little bit higher at #5. We also have the belated arrival of Fleet Foxes, whose original digital release did not get them onto the chart at all, with this #13 'debut' falling a little closer in line with their usual performance. Ziggy Alberts is an anti-vaxxer who belongs in the bin. Cold Chisel's 1981 album returns with 40th anniversary vinyl. Steve Earle's newest album sees him back into the top 50 for the first time in over 30 years. Next week you will perhaps learn the correct way to spell Skegss if they land at #1. Evanescence should also show up.

Do you know why Fleet Foxes' album only just entered now? Was its physical release not until last week in Australia? (Of course it had a belated physical release in the UK as well but that was still a while ago).

Seems to be only released this week. We've had a lot of stuff that gets caught behind their intended street day due to covid interrupting street dates (not just international releases either, I recall Thelma Plum's vinyl turning up 3 times, months apart on Warner's promo sheet, the first two being false alarms) but in my release date documenting, I don't recall Fleet Foxes ever having been intended to release sooner here.

It's a glorious time to be me as my much celebrated 6 week gang has a new entrant with "Heat Waves", and it looks to be sticking there too! As everything takes a little longer to peak in Australia, Justin Bieber's "Peaches" is still climbing on Spotify this week, and it looks to be enough to do the trick. Ideally we'd be cool and have Lil Nas X up there though he seems to be relatively hampered by playlists and let's also say Australia's conservative foothold over press. He does manage a top 20 debut though and it looks like "MONTERO" will vault into the top 5 next week but yeah, for once the US & UK stay winning. The law of diminishing returns hits Taylor Swift whose 2nd release lands at #34 ("Love Story" hit #21) despite actually getting playlist support. Which calls to question the meaning of an organic hit. Maroon 5 and Sam Fischer both arrive in the top 50 this week with songs that have been out for many weeks but made precious little impact until the playlists kicked in. Which of course you say that no doubt they're liked enough and this is just part of the process anyway, to which you could also look at Hot Hits Australia right now and see an egregious site as we are assured the hottest hit right now, worthy of cover photo and all is Wiz Khalifa's "The Thrill", an online bootleg cut from 2009 that got officially released late last year, showing its exact age with its heavy sampling of Empire Of The Sun's "Walking On A Dream", which is probably letting it be part of Australian quotas because screw actual new Australian music right? Anyway as a lesson of just how much these playlists can do for a song that would otherwise be doing next to nothing, "The Thrill" is #24 on Spotify here, but as of today's midweeks, shows no signs yet of actually being included on the chart, showing great teamwork from ARIA and Spotify Australia once again.

It should not come as a surprise that Australian garage/surf rock stalwarts Skegss (or Skeggs as you might be tempted to call them) score their first #1 this week. Their last album peaked at #2 back in 2018, held off by Eminem's 2nd week of release. Every Evanescence album has hit the top 10, though this week they reach #3 which is their highest since 2006, from which their first two albums reached #1. NF has a lot of invisible fanfare and his last album debuted at #3 with a respectable chart run to follow. With just a mixtape this week he manages #5. This week's Mike Patton adjacent entry is Tomahawk. Just like Mr. Bungle, their new entry this week is their highest ever to date, now we await to see if a Peeping Tom album arrives in a few months. A '10th anniversary' vinyl pressing gives a return for Tame Impala's debut album from back when they were more interesting, while from 5 years later we also have Troye Sivan's first album for the same reason. Next week is remarkably dry but Demi Lovato should make a big new entry.

I'm ecstatic to report to you that for the 6th time this decade, we've had a 6 week running #1 hit. Justin Bieber now has his first #1 since "I Don't Care" although I guess technically there might have been some point where "Mood" was only #1 because of that remix with him that you probably forgot existed but technically is always accruing streams. "Panini" was a long running top 20 hit but now Lil Nas X has his 2nd top 10 hit with "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)" at #3, which might be able to slide to #2 next week. Way back, Australia had a long running tradition of #1 hit follow ups peaking at #11. For now Olivia Rodrigo is not out of the running with "deja vu" which looks to climb next week but I'm not certain it's top 10 bound. Seemingly because of Easter, a lot of old songs climbed up a long on streaming this week which you can partially see in this week's top 50 re-entries, which nearly included "Mr. Brightside". A new song that does manage to sneak in is Russ Millions' "Body", which is perhaps remarkable because none of his previous UK hits have done anything over here, and for that matter, it's now outpeaked Megan Thee Stallion's "Body" which didn't quite make the top 50 here. Pop Smoke scores another fake week in the top 50 as ARIA exclusions continue, "The Thrill" and possibly "Arcade" should be top 50 this week.

No doubt with declining figures again, Justin Bieber takes on the zero competition this week to return to #1. Evidently the album chart is getting closer and closer to being ARIA's interpretation of a streaming chart. Demi Lovato & Lil Tjay do manage top 10 debuts though, the 3rd for Demi. Next week looks like smooth sailing for Taylor Swift at #1, while Richard Clapton & BROCKHAMPTON will battle for being the next highest.
