Jo Whiley will count down the Top 50 biggest-selling songs of Britpop in a special programme this upcoming Bank Holiday Monday.

From 2pm on Monday 31 August, the three-hour special will feature tracks from Oasis, Blur, Manic Street Preachers, The Verve, Supergrass and many more huge acts that defined Britpop in the 90s and beyond. The Top 50 chart has been compiled by the Official Charts Company especially for the programme.

Additional to the chart, Jo will also personally hand-pick a selection of rare tracks that were key to the formation of the iconic Britpop sound, while influential voices of the period will reflect on its heyday. Well-known fans of the genre will also pick their favourite tracks to be played on the show.

Britpop emerged in the mid-90s as a counter to Grunge and the DJ culture that dominated the airwaves at the time. The genre swept the nation and became a defining part of the era as bands and guitar music returned to the mainstream.

Reminiscent of classic British pop acts such as The Beatles, T-Rex and The Kinks, Britpop appealed to people from all generations making it a universally loved genre whose essence is still seen in bands across the globe today.
