As I've seen some conversation about it I thought it would be apt for a topic to be about it.. this thread is for nostalgia of past years of music?
What were your favourite years for music? What do you miss about older music/charts? What would you like to see more of from the past these days? I'll put together some sort of an answer later however I really did love 2013 as a year for music - the first year I was really into it and there were so many amazing songs from then that make me long for those times again  Your turn! |

2004-2007 for me was such a great time for pop music, so many excellent songs from that time that remain among my all-time faves, definitely songs that define my childhood. More recently, 2011-2014 was an excellent period, although I disagree with what's been said in said in the other thread, I look at the big hits of 2013 and don't feel like they do that year justice, most of my faves are actually non-chart hits from that year (11 of my EOY top 20 made the UK top 40 but I wouldn't call songs like Laura Mvula's Green Garden, J-Lo's Live It Up, and Iggy's Bounce huge hits).

2013 is definitely my favourite year for music, no doubt. The massive weekly #1 single sales were amazing. The return of House in the charts was great for me as it was my first year living in London and I'd go to the House raves.
MikeWillMadeIt produced three of my favourite songs from that year; Pour It Up, Body Party and We Can't Stop. Blood Orange released Chamakay.  Leona scored her biggest hit in years with One More Sleep.  Just a great year all around.I also remember 2003 being busy for pop music. Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Britney, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Girls Aloud, Sugababes... everyone was releasing! Actually, 2006 is also a special year for me since that is when I first began following the charts. I think I first followed them the week Nelly Furtado was #1 with Maneater. It's all about the 1980s and 1990s for me - I used to say all the best songs were released between 1980 and 2000, but as I've heard more stuff I add a couple years either side to that now. Maybe '79 to '03...but then that still leaves off a lot of brill mid-noughties indie, hmm.
Fave musical year is 1999 with 1991, 1995, 1996 and 2003 following close behind. It gets a bit hard to call after that as it's tricky to work out if I like a song for what it is or the nostalgic memories attached with it - like I love almost everything released from around 2008 to 2011 as they were my big student partying years, but musically I'm the first to admit that lots of it is a bit shit in comparison to two decades earlier. Something like Usher's 'OMG' or Taio Cruz's 'Dynamite' would mean nothing to me if released five years earlier or later, but in terms of clubbing memories they're major positive flashbacks. |

I think my favourite year for music is between 2006 and 2009. The former was when I first got into the charts so I hold it in a rose tinted view, but there was quite a varied amount of songs at the top (I always remember the beautiful shock of My Chemical Romance getting to number 1 <3) the introduction of downloads means sales weren't too awful, and there was a variety of styles of genres. 2009 I felt was similar in that there was a lot of unexpected hits and a variety of hits, and a lot of them stand up quite strong today as classics, again I have memories of leaving school with this year so I felt a deeper connection with it.
More recently, the deep house craze that happened at the start of 2014 was right up my street and I really enjoyed a lot of the charts at this point, 2012 and 2013 also had some very big hits that felt like they were selling on nothing more than merit (and still hold up well today), which is always good. |

2013 is certainly a highlight for me too, that'll go down as a classic year for music and the charts in general.
The whole 2011-2014 period was amazing actually, lots of great music and great dance songs hitting the charts. I do wish I was around for charts of years and years ago though, a lot of them seem so interesting and would've been great to listen to live as it's counting down (we really should do more dubtrack/plug sessions like the top 40 from that week in 2006 that happened for the buzzjack 10th anniversary!) |

My favorite time was mid 2004 to mid 2006 for the extremely fun sounding dance music, primarily these tracks

I concur that 2013 was one of my favourites. I have a nostalgic feel for some reason when I look back and the year's big hits ('Blurred Lines', 'Get Lucky', 'La La La', 'Love Me Again', 'I Love It', 'I Could Be the One', 'Counting Stars', 'Mirrors', 'Summertime Sadness' to name a few) actually felt huge and were ones I genuinely liked. Recent times have shown that I don't really 'get' the big hits and it's the music that makes less of an impression on the charts that I prefer. I also remember being obsessed with Paramore's album in the summer and I get flashbacks to that time when I hear the album and it makes me feel so happy.
2009 was also a year that I think fondly of. Pretty much every chart hit (as well those from the tail end of 2008 like 'Hot N Cold' and 'Womanizer') from that year makes me feel nostalgic. I think that's partly down to starting secondary school which coincides with starting to develop as a person, plus it was generally a particularly happy time in my life where everyone was friends and there was no hidden agenda and everything was simple. |

I started secondary school in 2000 and while life memories weren't always great, any music released during that time I have nothing but love for. Agreed with you about 2009 as I was in my first year at uni, so similar good times just with lots of alcohol  I wasn't too keen on 2013 but then I was a miserable 24/25 year old working a zero-hour contract in a cinema that played the same few recent hits on loop, so the likes of 'Burn', 'Get Lucky' etc remind me of cleaning toilets and sweeping up popcorn - it's not gonna give me the best memories! But I really liked a lot of the dance in the second half of the year, Disc 2 of Now 86 is full of classics. |

Great topic! Absolutely love the mid 90s to very early noughties. I started really getting into music around spring 1995 just as Britpop was in full swing when there were some fantastic songs that even when I hear them now take me right back to that time. And while I loved the period from 1995 to about mid-2001, if I had to pick my absolute favourite year for music I'd have to go with 1997. Such an amazing year with so many classics, can't believe it will be 20 years next year. And we had some great pop songs in '98/'99 and some stunning trance records in '99/2000.
I felt like we had a fantastic run of music from about summer 2006 until about late 2009 with 2008 being a particularly good year in my opinion. 2012/2013 had another great run of music, in my view, with some real classics being released. 2006 and 2012 for me. Both make me feel so many strange feelings of nostalgia in a different way from the other. This seeps just a little bit over to 2007 and 2011/2013 as well.

1987 - 1992 for me for pop music and 1990 - 1994 for indie. The pre-Britpop era remains my favourite - it got pretty diluted after that.
