Seeing as we have more concrete news, I thought I'd start a topic! biggrin.gif

Tom Hardy will star in Sony’s long-awaited “Spider-Man” movie “Venom,” with “Zombieland” helmer Ruben Fleischer on board to direct.

While “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is still two months away from opening, Sony is acting quickly to build its extended universe, which starts with the “Venom” movie.

Although the studio has been meeting with directors for some time, the actor selection process sped up after Hardy exited J.C. Chandor’s action-thriller “Triple Frontier,” and Sony saw an opportunity to court an in-demand talent.

Fleischer showcased his ability to bring together dark themes and humor in “Zombieland,” and according to sources, Hardy is a huge fan of Venom. Hardy’s only previous film in the superhero genre is 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” in which he played another baddie, Bane.

Scott Rosenberg (“Jumanji”) and Jeff Pinkner (“The Dark Tower”) will write the script for “Venom,” with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing the movie, along with Amy Pascal. Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing the project for Columbia Pictures.

“Venom” is set to hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.

Since its inception in 1988, Venom has been one of “Spider-Man’s” most popular characters, making it a top priority for the studio to get a movie off the ground. The character is an alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive. The alien vests its victim with incredible powers. Venom made his first big-screen appearance in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3,” where he was portrayed by Topher Grace.

Throughout the history of Marvel Comics, Venom has appeared alongside Spider-Man, Iron Man, Deadpool, Hulk, and other Marvel Comics characters.

Hardy most recently starred in the FX series “Taboo” and can be seen next in Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic “Dunkirk.” He is repped by CAA and United Agents.

The film marks Fleischer’s first major tentpole since signing with CAA last year. He has primarily been working in the TV world, specifically on Netflix’s “Santa Clarita Diet.” He is also currently developing a sequel to “Zombieland.” Fleischer is also repped by Management 360.

Hardy posted a photo of himself in a Venom T-shirt to celebrate the announcement.

Such an interesting choice!

Venom is a BRILLIANT bad guy. Probably the most iconic bad guy alongside the Joker? So much wasted potential in the original third Spiderman film! But hopefully this sets him up nicely for Avengers/Spider-Man movies in the future!

So they're gonna actually get someone really buff to play Venom? I remember Eddie Drake in some of the old Spider-Man cartoons being pretty buff.

Posted by: Klaus 19th May 2017, 06:53 PM

This has literally gone from 'probably will be shit' to 'omg hyped for this' purely because of Tom Hardy's casting for me! I don't think he's the type to attach himself to a superhero film if it will be rubbish!

I want Topher Grace back.

Posted by: Severin 21st May 2017, 03:41 PM

Venom is the one Spiderman villain I want to see in a film (done properly) and Hardy is brilliant so this is good news

Posted by: Jonjo 8th February 2018, 02:22 PM

Teaser trailer is here. Literally a teaser trailer as it gives not a lot away!

Exciting.

I wish they would hire unknown actors once in a while. Tom Hardy. Again. Great.

"I want Topher Grace back."

This

I woulda watched it, but not here for MORE Tom Hardy. Give us a break.

I'm gonna reserve judgement. I'm interested how they're gonan introduce the symbiote without Spider-Man being in the Beyonder world like in the comics.
By the looks maybe it crash lands on Earth and bonds to Eddie Brock.
Wonder is he's gonna be the Anti-Hero that Venom is now, seems likely without Spider-Man.
And will Michelle Williams eventually become She-Venom? *.*

Is this a joint project between Sony & Marvel like Spider-Man was, meaning it’s in the same universe, or is it part of its own universe without Spidey?

Posted by: Jonjo 10th February 2018, 06:15 AM

It's supposed to be a part of it's own universe, apparently. Spider-man (or at least Tom Holland's incarnation) will not be appearing apparently. sad.gif

Posted by: Dexton 11th February 2018, 02:40 AM

I guess they’re trying to do Deadpool again, but tbh I can’t really imagine Venom without Spiderman.

Posted by: Regina 12th February 2018, 06:54 PM

Deadpool has always been his own entity and usually works alone. Venom is inherently tied to Spider-Man.

Posted by: Tombo 18th February 2018, 06:11 AM

I am excited for this film, it looks really exciting and Tom Hardy is very hot too!

The new trailer looks incredible, this film looks like it is going to be really good cheer.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 24th April 2018, 09:51 AM

Brilliant!

So, so hyped for this!

This

They want a second Deadpool, even down to hiring someone famous

Urth

Not here for this

Tom Hardy is a famous man. He is NOT VENOM

I mean, it looks okay. Does seem to be leaning towards anti-hero Vemon which is good. I'd still prefer it to be related to Spider-man but seeing as they've rebooted it, the timeline wouldn't match up.

Posted by: Joe. 24th April 2018, 12:30 PM

I feel like it's pointless to start this up without it linking to Tom Holland's spiderman in some way?

I agree with this comment. Tom Holland is listed on IMDB ("rumoured" though) so I'm hoping that Marvel Studios have decided to tie it in in some way or another.

Oh and it's nothing like Deadpool. From the trailer, so those comparisons can stop now (I get Dexton's comparison - but ofc Michael is just basing it on the fact it's a star in the lead role... especially as you wouldn't even put Venom and Deadpool together after actually seeing the trailers 🙃)

Posted by: Regina 24th April 2018, 12:50 PM

I can see them introducing Spider-Man at the end and having him think Venom is too dangerous etc. thus starting up their nemesis type relationship.
It'd be nice to have their relationship more intertwine dlike in the comics but like I said, it'd take too much time to set up and they've only just got Tom's Spidey off the ground.

Posted by: Jonjo 24th April 2018, 12:55 PM

I think that'd work well and be a more natural way of doing it. Even if they just use Venom in the Spider-man 2 stinger at the end of the credits etc.. just plant the seeds a little.

Posted by: Joe. 24th April 2018, 12:55 PM

But I thought they ruled out Tom/MCU version of Spiderman being cannon?

Posted by: Jonjo 24th April 2018, 01:00 PM

They did and iirc, when I checked around that time I don't think Tom Holland was even on the cast and credits. So maybe they've decided to intertwine them and he'll appear in a stinger or something?

Venom is probably (coming from a non-comic book reader) the most iconic Superhero villain (well The Joker aside), at least to me and I always enjoyed his arc in SM3, I just wish they spent more time on it and focussed on it more than they did. So I'm really excited to see if they can actually pull off his character in a movie.

Posted by: Regina 24th April 2018, 01:16 PM

I loved Topher as Venom tbh, he just needed a bit more bulk laugh.gif but I always remeber Venom from the Spider-Man cartoon in the 90's wub.gif

To the general non comic fan, Venom is probs up there with The Joker as the most well known villain I'd agree.

Posted by: ┴פsᴉʍ/ 24th April 2018, 05:19 PM

I wasn't that excited for this before but omg what a trailer.

The Venom reveal at the end was actually pretty brilliant.

Posted by: Cody💧Slayberry 24th April 2018, 05:44 PM

This actually looks surprisingly good!

Posted by: TomboOnBroadway 24th April 2018, 06:11 PM

Venom can hold his own without needing Spider-Man though, I have read Venom comics where I don't think Spider-Man is even mentioned

Posted by: Cody💧Slayberry 25th April 2018, 01:29 AM

seeing hot guys at the gym like

Posted by: Regina 25th April 2018, 11:28 AM

Well I guess I'm sexually into monsters now

Posted by: HeadlessJockey 2nd October 2018, 03:05 PM

CBR dotcom reports there is a scene at the end of the end credits, so let’s hope they’re not too long.

Posted by: HannibalLetcher 19th October 2018, 05:26 PM

Was quite disappointed with this, expected more.

Posted by: Popchartfreak 3rd November 2018, 05:19 PM

5.5/10 Merely OK. Nothing wrong with the cast and premise, it's more the silliness (while playing it straight) of notions like having a space shuttle in the middle of San Francisco, and it being ready to fly and blast off in minutes; or the body count in the early part of the film by anyone who gets "inhabited" to suddenly not be a thing at the end. Just didn't gel really, so must be the script that's flawed as opposed to anything else....
