QUOTE
Walkers has today announced the launch of a new limited-edition sausage roll flavoured crisps for the festive season. (IN MOST SHOPS FROM MONDAY!)

But in the ultimate spirit of Crispmas giving, the crisps, dubbed ‘The Power of Sausage Roll’, will also help raise money for charity. In a bid to help the Trussel Trust – which supports a network of food banks across the UK, and is working towards a future where everyone has enough money for the essentials - raise more money than ever before at Christmas, 5p from every pack sold will be donated to the charity. It’s never been easier to do good at Christmas!

The new flavour is being launched in partnership with social media star @ladbabyofficial - who has hit the coveted festive number one spot for the last two Christmases with his sausage roll-inspired singles, which also raise money for the @trusseltrust.

The nation’s crisp and sausage roll lovers will be able to find ‘The Power of Sausage Roll’, flavour crisps, which are suitable for vegetarians, in grab bags*, sharing packs* and multipacks*, from retailers nationwide**.

So BuzzJack, if you thought 2020 couldn’t get any stranger, we now have sausage roll flavoured crisps dubbed ‘The Power of Sausage Roll’ perhaps hinting at a clue to the title or style or sound we may very well expect from LadBaby in his attempt to reclaim the coveted #1 spot for a third year in a row to complete the hat-trick. Would it be something as obvious as a cover of “The Power Of Love” by Frankie Goes To Hollywood or would he go for his usual uptempo and impromptu style of comedic pop music?

Let’s get discussing before it is likely revealed in the coming weeks leading up to the Christmas releases.

Urgh, like 2020 wasn’t a shitshow already manson.gif At least it’s for charity, but I’d rather not.

Yes!

Posted by: pippa Oct 16 2020, 10:35 PM

No, as I'm hopeful of Mariah at the summit.

Posted by: Grim Bréaper Oct 16 2020, 10:50 PM

After people somehow didn't get tired of the 'joke' last year I think it's pretty clear he'll probably be able to continue getting Christmas #1 every year as long as he continues releasing songs.

Posted by: RobBot Oct 16 2020, 11:17 PM

I feel like it’ll get even more press coverage this year due to it being a record breaker for him to have 3 #1s so it feels inevitable to me.

Posted by: GhoulOdyssey Oct 16 2020, 11:22 PM

Looks like he'll be starring in the Walker's Christmas ads this year, more great promotion for it!

Posted by: kye Oct 16 2020, 11:32 PM

ugh, i hope not.

would anybody know this man if he passed them on the street?!

His videos on social media all get millions of views each, so yeah I'm sure lots do laugh.gif (I would haha)

Yes.

“God Gave Sausage Rolls To You” has already pre-booked its place at number 1.

Posted by: dan-G Oct 17 2020, 07:38 AM

It'll probably go to #1 and with his biggest ever first week sales too given the year we have had.

Who would want to buy Christmas crisps before Halloween?

Yes.

That sounds believable but then anything with “Rock & Roll” in the title lends itself to sausage rolls.

With the number one this week only selling 48k there’s a good chance it’ll be easy to do.

The Christmas number one is announced on Xmas day this year right?

Posted by: slowdown73 Oct 17 2020, 08:29 AM

I hope not but it could happen. I wish someone would release a new decent original Christmas song for a change!

People do every year but none of them seem to do well.

I follow Ladbaby on Instagram and he's actually quite funny and comes across as quite a likeable guy. And yeah I'm pretty sure he'll do the hat-trick.

It's rumoured to be Another Sausage Roll Christmas, after the Gary Glitter 1984 Top 10 hit.

Posted by: T Boy Oct 17 2020, 08:50 AM

I’m all for it. Ladbaby is the only thing that makes the Christmas chart interesting these days. The only thing that would make it more interesting would be if someone actually provided some sincere competition.

More reason why he could do it then as it's not widely known amongst young people. Change the lyrics and it's only the tune.

Posted by: gooddelta Oct 17 2020, 09:02 AM

It would be a massive PR own goal to cover Gary Glitter. Hardly a good look raising money for charity.

Yes you're right. Just a rumour I read on Twitter last night.

100% yes, in the bag Mark let's do this!

Posted by: Suedehead2 Oct 17 2020, 09:19 AM

Surely it will depend more than normal on what charity(ies) he supports. A rival release from someone raising money to go to key workers to thank them for their efforts this year would potentially get a lot of support.

Posted by: On My Broomstick Oct 17 2020, 09:20 AM

Really, its a sure #1 due to the terrible year we are having, but than again will people dig deep this year.

And covering a Gary Glitter track just feels so wrong unsure.gif

Posted by: Bjork Oct 17 2020, 09:31 AM

I guess there will be lots of charity singles this year aiming at both raise funds and get the Xmas #1
so the right charity single could beat him, if there is a heavy campaign and they support a better charity
Adele could do one and get away with the Xmas #1...

I can't see any major star like Adele attempting for Christmas number one as I'm sure they don't want any potential negative publicity from denying LadBaby the #1.
There'll surely be a lot of rando charity singles most of which won't take off beyond going top 40 on iTunes, but I doubt any of them would actually be a real contender.

Posted by: jlj Oct 17 2020, 10:41 AM

It’s almost seeming like tradition now that he gets the Christmas #1.

I guess he’ll probably end up getting it.

With Xmas actually being on a Friday this year I wonder if the Xmas chart itself will be when most Xmas related tracks peak as sometimes it’s the chart after the Xmas one. At the minute it’s probably Mariah again coming for #2 but hopefully they’ll be another big charity release coming to try and give some competition. I wouldn’t be too shocked if they tried to get Captain Tom Moore on something to try and give the #1 to him.

Biggest streaming days for Christmas songs is always Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so the Christmas Day streams will count toward the following week and the Christmas Eve streams will be ignored because Thursday data doesn't come in on time to compile the chart.

Posted by: Bjork Oct 17 2020, 11:48 AM

^will be estimated not ignored...

Posted by: jimwatts Oct 17 2020, 12:40 PM

Estimated based on their streams on Christmas Eve in previous years, or just on their streams earlier in the week? I think Amazon streams for the Thursday might be counted anyway, as they usually report on time in the midweeks.

It's a moot point as far as the Christmas classics are concerned, as ACR combined with the split chart weeks means they won't compete for #1 in either week (unless sales are drastically low). Could there be another Alexa effect for something newer? Don't see it myself (and again the way Christmas falls won't help), but that or another charity record are the only things I think could potentially prevent Ladbaby.

Posted by: M4NGO Oct 17 2020, 04:04 PM

There's so many songs with "rock and roll" in the title that he could cover but my money's still on 'God Gave Sausage Rolls To You'.

Posted by: Pting Rollo Oct 17 2020, 04:12 PM

Nobody's mentioned ELO's top 20 single from 1983 yet, Rock'n'Roll Is King.

She said "wamalama bamalama sausage roll is king"

Posted by: Вuzzjack H'ween Oct 17 2020, 06:11 PM

No, I think it will be a charity song for key workers, probably in a socially distanced choir, that will make #1 I think.

Posted by: HeadlessJockey Oct 17 2020, 06:40 PM

A lot of charity key worker songs, socially distancing choirs, a children's choir, Amanda Holden, Gemma Collins or even some feature which includes Vera Lynn and Captain Tom Moore having a shot at it I reckon.

LadBaby wouldn't do 'My Sausage Roll' a cover of Chuck Berry's 'My Ding-a-Ling'.

Well Walkers have outdone themselves this year with the festive crisps, there’s none of the nasty sprout nonsense but instead Sausage Roll! They’ve teamed up with LadBaby to create these and 5p from every pack sold goes to @trusselltrust to stop U.K. hunger.

I’m not sure how they’ve managed it but these actually do taste of sausage roll! 🤯 There’s the flavours of sausage, onion & herbs making them distinctly sausage roll like. Very unique! I’ll certainly be happy getting these regularly over the festive season. Well done Walkers! In shops from today.

It's an estimate based on the pattern for the rest of the week which massively underestimates the huge increase on Christmas Eve.

We've already had a 'Christmas on a Friday' to compare it to. Christmas 2015: https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart/20160101/7501/

It's the most disadvantageous possible configuration for Christmas streaming in the chart.

Posted by: SevenSeize Oct 20 2020, 12:10 PM

The king continues to build his sausage roll empire *.* can't wait for those to hit the shelves

It'd be amazing if he went for the hat-trick, though there's nothing left to prove, and 'I Love Sausage Rolls' was such a master class in musicality and humour it'd be a tough act to follow

unless people would prefer a fake Amazon exclusive track as the Christmas #1... pirate.gif

it's not like that
any week, to predict how a song is gonna do on Thu
they use the data for that song during that week
plus the data of how all songs have performed every week in the history of Spotify

so first the model learns how songs perform on Thu based on the all-time data
and then predicts what they'll do on Thu based on the Fri-Wed data but based on what the model has learnt from the all-time data

same for Xmas... it's not based only on what you've done during that week...it's called machine-learning

Nah.. there's a distinct lack of genuine monster crossover hits around at the moment. Feels to me like a lot of the stuff making top 5 is getting there by default. Bad times.

So how do you explain Thriller missing the Top 100 after Halloween was on a Thursday last year, when it made the Top 100 every previous year since 2006 and the Top 75 every year since 2012? Even in 2018, it was on permanent ACR but still made #63.

Posted by: zenon Oct 20 2020, 08:37 PM

If there has to be a campaign to stop Ladbaby this time then the song should be another current big record ie. the likely Christmas number 2.

Posted by: Dobbo Oct 21 2020, 07:51 AM

Yeah ppl always miss a huge open goal with those^

Makes sense for a campaign to target a song naturally doing well anyway rather than something completely new which has to take off from ground zero. If there was a big public campaign last year to support Own It it would have easily stopped LadBaby from going to #1.

I'm not endorsing it myself personally but it's a huge oversight!

The data from 2015 would suggest otherwise, the model that the OCC used underestimated the Christmas Eve SES by some considerable margin. It may have been improved since then I guess..

I'm not sure the ABBA comeback would go to number one, on sales it might but streaming will be a massive hindrance to a band like ABBA.

I know a lot on here despise Ladbaby getting no.1s but I find it pretty bad taste that people would campaign to stop a charity song from going to no.1. I’m all for competition but people campaigning to get something equally awful yet current to no.1 seems like people are taking it too seriously.

i put one in my mouth and nearly had a heart attack!

A good kind of heart attack or a bad one? I still can't get my hands on any, I've tried both my local supermarkets!

Still no sign on twitter of a Christmas single, when does he usually start the promo?

Who would want to buy Christmas crisps before Halloween?

Christmas based food items enter the supermarkets from late August or early September each year (I used to work in supermarkets for years and well remember the store having to be rearranged whillst it was still quite hot, to condense down the BBQs and summer stuff and start to push out all the xmas stuff) so plenty of people do buy xmas stuff long long before Halloween.

There's not a chance he'll cover a Gary Glitter song laugh.gif

I wouldn't totally rule it out. The glittered weirdo hasn't owned the rights to any of his songs for (I think) over 20 years now, and definitely wouldn't make any money from it. I also swear that the song has been creeping back onto radio playlists in recent xmases (although I do nightshifts every Xmas, so it's possible radio in the middle of the night is more open to making controversial record choices, they certainly play Fairytale of New York frequently and uncensored, whilst I believe it is rationed and censored during the day). And as someone else said many younger people will have no real idea who the glittered one even is and will not have any negative connotations when hearing the tune etc.

Not sure if you cottoned on or not, but M4ngo was paraphrasing one of the comical lyrics in one of his previous xmas number one. The actual lyric being 'she put in her mouth and I nearly had a heart attack.

QUOTE(Doctor Blind @ Oct 17 2020, 08:53 AM) *
Yeah, I've never even heard the Gary Glitter song (for good reason) and therefore it is hardly known among most people.

I disagree, I think the majority of people would still know the song, as it was well known, and well played by radio every xmas until at least the mid nineties, so with the possible exception of 25 and unders (who admittedly are more likely to be into chart music) most of the rest of the population will know the song.

Please let it be an original song. And not something like "Sausage Roll Dreams Come Through", or "Mr Sausage Roll", or "It's a Long Way To The Shop (If You Want a Sausage Roll)."

I embarrased to admit I had to google all of those to get the references, although in hindsight I should have worked out the middle one was Amy Macdonald as I bought it at the time.

I’d hope not, imagine cramming all those syllables in?

That's given me horrible flashbacks to the year that Roy Wood must have smoked something funny and ended up deciding that his old xmas song would some how work in a mash-up with the Wombles classic xmas song.

Imagine if he did that, and that stopped Mariah from getting to #1...

I'm starting to think Mariah has more to gain financially from repeated efforts every year trying to get her to number one than she would from actually achieving it and then losing that boost in all future years.

So how do you explain Thriller missing the Top 100 after Halloween was on a Thursday last year, when it made the Top 100 every previous year since 2006 and the Top 75 every year since 2012? Even in 2018, it was on permanent ACR but still made #63.

Far far less Halloween parties, both officially organised ones, and informal gatherings of families and or friendship groups etc, for obvious reasons, probably mean that people didn't put on as much Halloween music overall this year (I assume that much of the Halloween and Xmas effects is people putting on a Xmas or Halloween playlist, or asking Alexa etc to do so, to soundtrack their parties for those occasions, as well as some playlists being put on in workplaces etc), so it probably streamed rather less and therefore missed the Top 100.

I think the people who do the campaigns want to have the same glory as the Rage campaign, of taking a song from nowhere to massive number one, it's more of an achievment that way and it's less likely people will start saying "the campaign didn't do anything and the song would have got there on its own steam anyway" etc.

I'm not sure the ABBA comeback would go to number one, on sales it might but streaming will be a massive hindrance to a band like ABBA.

Has anyone managed to get hold of any of the sausage roll flavoured crisps yet?

Surely a lot of people would stream it first (even if only on youtube) to see if it was any good before actually paying for it, so wouldn't the first week of streams be ok, at the very least? I also think significant physical sales wouldn't be a given for them for new material, though it probably would for reissues, remixes or alternate versions of their old classics.

But 'Power of Love' could be Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Jennifer Rush or Huey Lewis and the News, so three fairly different possibilities there.

Sorry I posted so many replies here, I haven't been on buzzjack in a while and there were loads of things I want to reply to lol.

My suggestion for a song where 'Rock and Roll' could be replace with 'Sausage Roll' is the song from Grease 'Rock and Roll is her to stay'. I could just see Mark (ladbaby) singing 'Sausage Rolls are here to stay, they will never die'.

I guess the Jennifer Rush track is still a slow melody and the Huey one would be upbeat

It was last year that it didn't chart, not this year - the Halloween songs actually did better than ever before on streaming this year, and Christmas songs seem to be off to a better start than ever too, so the pandemic is if anything helping the seasonal hits.

(Glad to see you back on the forum btw, I had wondered where you disappeared to!)

But which triple-#1 set is better - 2 Become 1, Too Much & Goodbye, or We Built This City on Sausage Rolls, I Love Sausage Rolls & Don't Stop Me Eatin'?

It's a tough one for me, the Spice Girls songs are unrivalled classics of the 1990s but the emotion and poignancy of the Sausage Rollogy bring tears to my eyes at times.

But their legacy IS challenged -- by the Beatles!! The Beatles challenge thr Spices and the Spices challenge the Beatles. They are in a league of their own, although sales-wise globally the Spices were never that big anyway.
