The Official Top 50 Biggest Selling Elvis Presley Singles Revealed
By Rob Copsey 38 years ago this month, Elvis Presley tragically died and music lost its King of Rock n Roll. But despite his untimely death aged just 42, Elvis remains one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of all time and an icon of the '50s and '60s. What's more, this month also marks the 50th anniversary of when Elvis met fellow rock n roll titans The Beatles for the first and only time at the former's Bel Air's mansion, when the Fab Four were on their US tour. To celebrate, BBC Radio 2 have today (August 31) revealed each acts Top 50 bestsellers, as compiled by The Official Charts Company. The countdown kicked off with Sara Cox and culminated with Simon Mayo revealing the Number 1 song for each act during his Drivetime show at 7pm. The radio special is immediately followed by BBC2's When Elvis Met The Beatles; a unique drama about their elusive meeting in Beverly Hills. Topping Elvis’ best-sellers chart is It’s Now Or Never (with the Jordanaires), a song that spent eight weeks at the top in 1960-1961 and returned to the summit again in 2005 for a single week - 28 years after his death. To date, the ballad has sold 1.27 million copies in the UK alone. Elsewhere among the Top 10 hits is A Little Less Conversation at Number 5 (sales of 828,000). The song became a worldwide hit in 2002 including four weeks at the top of the Official Singles Chart when JXL released a remix of the track, originally performed by Elvis for the 1968 film Live A Little, Love A Little. Meanwhile it was recently announced that a selection of Elvis’ hits have been reworked by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for a new album, called If I Can Dream. The collection will be released on October 30. The Official Top 50 Best Selling Elvis Presley singles and tracks appears below: (Note: the chart is based on all-time sales of all Elvis digital track and physical single releases up to the end of June 2015) POSITION TITLE DATE ARTIST 1 It's Now Or Never Nov-60 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 1.27m 2 Jailhouse Rock** Jan-58 Elvis Presley 3 Are You Lonesome Tonight Jan-61 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 4 The Wonder Of You Jul-70 Elvis Presley 5 A Little Less Conversation Jun-02 Elvis vs JXL 828k 6 Way Down Aug-77 Elvis Presley 7 Wooden Heart Mar-61 Elvis Presley 8 Surrender May-61 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 9 All Shook Up Jun-57 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 10 Rock A Hula Baby / Can't Help Falling In Love* Feb-62 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 11 Return To Sender Nov-62 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 12 Suspicious Minds Nov-69 Elvis Presley 13 Good Luck Charm May-62 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 14 A Fool Such As I / I Need Your Love Tonight* Apr-59 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 15 Devil In Disguise Jul-63 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 16 In The Ghetto Jun-69 Elvis Presley 17 It's Only Love / Beyond The Reef* Aug-80 Elvis Presley 18 (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame / Little Sister* Nov-61 Elvis Presley 19 Crying In The Chapel May-65 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 20 She's Not You Aug-62 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 21 One Night / I Got Stung* Jan-59 Elvis Presley 22 Hound Dog Sep-56 Elvis Presley 23 A Mess Of Blues Jul-60 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 24 Heartbreak Hotel May-56 Elvis Presley 25 Don't Feb-58 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 26 (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear Jul-57 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 27 King Creole Oct-58 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 28 Hard Headed Woman Jul-58 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 29 Always On My Mind Dec-72 Elvis Presley 30 Party Oct-57 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 31 Stuck On You Apr-60 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 32 Wear My Ring Around Your Neck May-58 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 33 Burning Love Sep-72 Elvis Presley 34 A Big Hunk O' Love Jul-59 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 35 My Boy Nov-74 Elvis Presley 36 Wild In The Country / I Feel So Bad* Sep-61 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 37 An American Trilogy Jun-72 Elvis Presley 38 Moody Blue Mar-77 Elvis Presley 39 Viva Las Vegas Mar-64 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 40 It Won't Seem Like Christmas (Without You) Dec-79 Elvis Presley 41 My Way Dec-77 Elvis Presley 42 Until It's Time For You To Go Apr-72 Elvis Presley 43 If I Can Dream Feb-69 Elvis Presley 44 The Girl Of My Best Friend Sep-76 Elvis Presley with The Jordanaires 45 Blue Suede Shoes May-56 Elvis Presley 46 There Goes My Everything Mar-71 Elvis Presley 47 Love Letters Jul-66 Elvis Presley 48 I Just Can't Help Believing Dec-71 Elvis Presley 49 Promised Land Jan-75 Elvis Presley 50 Suspicion Dec-76 Elvis Presley * - Double A Side Releases includes digital tracks sales ** Includes sales of the Jailhouse Rock EP ©2015 Official Charts Company . Beatles Observations.
* - Double A Side Releases included digital track sales Does this mean that both sides digital sales are added to the original physical sales? Sgt Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band and With A Little Help From My Friends were issued as a single in October 1978 reaching no. 63. Looks like they are not combining digital sales with this physical single as it is listed Nov-10. Looks like they are not adding digital sales of Twist & Shout to the Twist & Shout EP. Surprised at the position of Ain't she sweet (only reached no. 29 with 6 weeks in the chart). If anyone has up-to-date sales for Free as a bird, Real love, Baby it's you and Back in the USSR then we might be able to estimate digital download sales. |

Thought Always on my Mind and Suspicious Minds would be higher on the list. Also one of my personal favs In the Ghetto should be higher Way Down being released after his death is in a false position really as his passing clearly boosted the sales. Interesting list though.

the splitting of Sgt Pepper and Friends is a little odd considering it WAS a single and they merge together on the album pretty much - at least I can't hear the very short Pepper without starting off into Ringo's What would you think... lyrics....
Adding digital sales to EP's is more problematic, usually they were more like album offcuts, though Magical Mystery Tour is different, it's an original work of art and probably should be viewed more as an album, or mini-album, which these days would make the album charts in the absence of physical bits of 45rpm plastic - in which case the individual tracks should count as separate downloads or entire sales of all of them should count as an album sale. It's playing time and track listing is longer than many albums after all.... |

EP sales are included because Beatles MMT entered the Record Retailer singles chart (as did Elvis with Jailhouse Rock EP). The separate EP chart had been abolished the week before MMT was released. See the OCC artist singles archive for The Beatles. As I said sales of Twist & Shout are not added to the EP because it did not enter the RR singles chart.

Yeah, and the same obviously applies to Elvis: they've only included the Jailhouse Rock EP because that was one of the few that appeared in the (Record Retailer) singles chart. I presume only EPs that showed on the singles chart are in the relevant OCC database.
Magical Mystery Tour is only 19 minutes, by the way. I know there are albums shorter than that, but not many. |

The Beatles Movie Medley at No.25 wasn't played by Jeremy Vine on Radio 2. Either he forgot or there was a reason why it was skipped.

Possibly the Movie Medley's not in R2's playout system, as it's never been officially released on CD. They still could have sourced it from vinyl though.

Apologies for that. Was someone on the POTP Facebook page who said it wasn't played but he must have missed it then. I wasn't listening then. Should have double checked!

I heard it also.
They played 2 tracks from MMT EP and I am the walrus with Hello Goodbye. They should add all the digital sales together for both A and B sides, not just for double A sides. A single has 2 sides but a track is only one song. In the NME chart the Beatles had several EP entries. As did Elvis. These were ignored. |

A single has 2 sides but a track is only one song. In the NME chart the Beatles had several EP entries. As did Elvis. These were ignored. That would be nice. When you buy a digital package of tracks as a single (you still can), though, is that counted as one sale for the lead track? I think so else the B sides and remixes would chart independently, but equally just buying the lead track or a remix counts. As you can have 2 quite different mixes of a song contributing towards a track total sales, there's a good argument that B sides as part of the package should count. There's also a good argument they shouldn't if the B side is more popular than the A side, and they really should be regarded as a double A side, and it becomes problematic when new singles were issued with old album tracks or previous singles as B sides... |

Just have separate lists for all-time charts - physical and digital. You can combine them if you wish.

I don't really know why they bother with these lists. Where do they get their info from?
During the 1960s, record charts were not based on sales of any kind. Shops supplied the big music papers with lists of 50 records that were selling in that particular shop. The music papers (themselves) took up to 200 charts from various shops across the UK & Ireland & added all those shop charts together to create their own top 100s. Devil In Disguise only shipped a little over 300k in the 60s. The above list suggests 590k. Gaining some 290k in 45 years It's Only Love sold 272k, during 1980. This list suggests 580k. Where has 308k extra come from? It's not even a well known song. The Beatles list fulls apart for the non-inclusion of the Twist & Shout E.P. (selling 650k in the 60s alone) & 5 years ago 'A Hard Days Night' was at 9. Now its 17. Quite mind boggling. |

Following the recent Radio 2 program here is my estimate of The Beatles top 50 singles sales 1962 to 2015.
SHE LOVES YOU 1,920,000 These all add up to 22,000,000. OCC gave a figure of 22.1m by November 2012. Since then all their other tracks possibly total an extra 400,000 giving an overall total of 22.5m singles in the UK. Digital sales of both sides of Double A-sides were added to the original physical single except for the 1978 single Sgt Pepper/With a little help. For the period 1994 to 1996 sales are estimated to be about midway between the DUS and Panel sales of the time to take account of possible under reporting. Yet another UK Gold Album award for Elvis.
ELVIS PRESLEY - THE REAL ELVIS Gold Certification (Album) 11 September 2015 SONY MUSIC (SONY MUSIC) Released 20 June 2011 Certification History: Silver Certification 22 July 2013 100,000 sales in just over 4 years. According to the 2016 edition of Guinness Book of Records Elvis is the best-selling solo artist with worldwide record sales (vinyl, cassettes, CDs and downloads) of more than 1 billion units. He has the most hit albums at 129 in both the UK and US charts. He has achieved the greatest number of cumulative weeks at no. 1 in the singles chart, 80 weeks in the UK and 79 weeks in the US. Since it says units I assume Guinness have converted 1 album into 6 equivalent singles units as they did in the past. Is it possible that Elvis has sold combined singles and albums totalling 1,000 million units? |

The Official Top 50 biggest selling Elvis Presley singles revealed
16 August 2017 | By Rob Copsey 40 years after his death, Official Charts counts down the King's 50 best sellers of all time. 40 years ago this week, Elvis Presley tragically died and music lost its King of rock n roll. But despite his untimely death aged just 42, Elvis remains one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of all time and an icon of the '50s and '60s. In memory of the music legend, a new retrospective called The 50 Greatest Hits is out this week, featuring – you guessed it – 50 of Elvis’s best-known songs, including Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog and Love Me Tender. It’s currently vying for Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, locked in a seriously tight race with Ed Sheeran. Meanwhile, a new exhibition called Elvis On Tour has been announced, opening on November 3 at London’s O2 Arena for 90s days. The show, which follows the mammoth success of the Elvis at the O2 exhibition in 2014/2015, the new shows covers the years 1969 – 1977 and will showcase more than 200 artefacts from the Graceland archives in the UK for the first time. Elvis's legacy and monetary worth remain immensely strong in 40 years after his untimely death. According to Forbes' list of top earning dead stars, he earned $27m (£21m) in 2016 and sold one million albums. And since 2000, he has sold 4.5 million singles in the UK alone. To mark the occasion, Official Charts is revealing the King’s 50 best-selling singles in the UK. At Number 1 is It’s Now Or Never (with the Jordanaires), a song that spent eight weeks at the top in 1960-1961 and returned to the summit again in 2005 for a single week - 28 years after his death. To date, the ballad has sold 1.3 million copies in the UK alone. Elvis’s second best-selling single is 1958’s Jailhouse Rock (985,500 sales), the theme song of the motion picture he also starred in, and Are You Lonesome Tonight? is third with sales of 911,000. Released in the UK in January 1961, the song spent four weeks at the Official Singles Chart summit. Elsewhere among the Top 10 hits is A Little Less Conversation at Number 4 (sales of 894,000). The song became a worldwide hit in 2002 including four weeks at the top of the Official Singles Chart when JXL released a remix of the track, originally performed by Elvis for the 1968 film Live A Little, Love A Little. Rounding off the Top 5 is The Wonder Of You. The track logged six weeks at Number 1 in the summer of 1970, and has sold 891,000 copies to date in the UK. Other notable entries include his double A-side of Rock A Hula Baby/Can't Help Falling In Love with 760,000 sales, and 1969's Suspicious Minds, which just misses out on a Top 10 placing at Number 11 with 640,000 sales. The track narrowly missed out on reaching the top spot in the UK, peaking at Number 2 in January 1970. All rights reserved. * - Double A Side Releases includes digital tracks sales ** Includes sales of the Jailhouse Rock EP A look at how Elvis’s songs are holding up in the streaming age paints a very different picture from his sales-based chart. Since streaming started counting towards the Official Chart in summer 2014, the icon has notched up 164 million plays across all services in the UK. Topping the list is Can’t Help Falling In Love, which has notched up 13 million plays. Released in 1961 as a double A-side with Rock-A-Hula-Baby, the song reached Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart and became his signature ballad, closing many of his live performances in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Taking second place on Elvis’s most streamed songs is 1969’s Suspicious Minds (11.5m), followed by Burning Love (7m). Interestingly, 1964’s Blue Christmas, which makes Number 40 in his sales chart, is his sixth most streamed song in the UK (6.2m), no doubt bolstered by the annual surge in streaming festive songs.
