I bought cassingles new from about 1999 to 2004. My first new full priced one (had loads of second hand or bargin bin ones) was Bag It Up by Geri Halliwell, from Woolies, probably for 99p. My last cassingle would probably have been in the first week of 2004 when WHSmith was literally removing all their cassingles from the shelves when I was in there, and I only just got my copy of Victoria Beckham's This Groove/Let Your Head Go as they were just removing that cassingle, and I probably bought others the same day as that. I think Wollies, Zavvi and HMV in Swindon may have already stopped stocking cassingles just before this. I know my first CD singles were CD1 and CD2 of Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne's changes in December 2003, as I couldn't find a cassingle version anywhere and had to got to Argos and buy my first CD player so I could buy the CDs instead. It seems it was a rapid changeover from Cassingles to CDs for us in Swindon around Xmas 2003. I think my last new CD singles were the middle three Ladbaby singles, if we can count online orders, and I couldn't bring myself to order the last one, Food Aid. Otherwise it was probably a previous Xmas number one, either X Factor or charity one, possibly from a supermarket. I did regularly buy a lot CD singles between Dec 2003 and mid 2010, but by then the only place that stocked them was HMV, up on the 2nd floor, and I began to realise they pretty much only had stuff from the Syco label by mid 2010, whereas I now had an iPod Classic and could get cheap downloads of literally anything I wanted from there, so I gave up bothering with visiting HMV every week for new CD singles.

I've bought four CD singles this year!
Ariana Grande - yes, and? Kylie Minogue - Hold On to Now Noah Kahan - Stick Season Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor [2024 edition] Interestingly, I bought both the Ariana and Noah singles in HMV - can't remember the last time I bought even one CD single from an HMV store! I continue to fill in gaps in my collection via charity shops, and I have plenty on my Discogs wantlist that I want to chip away at but obviously the money can add up so I've not really bought anything off that in a while sadly. |
