I'm using the version that went to number 2, so 1993 it is. Madonna 'Crazy For You' was number 2 in 1985 but the 1991 was a re-release [and it also went to no.2 that year] so it counts as 1991

42 - Supergrass "Alright" (1995) (+16)

Supergrass had 2 number 2 hits, but only this one made it through. It was stopped by The Outhere Brothers from going to number one for two weeks.

I voted for 80s number ones - I would find it difficult to rate 00's number twos from the latter half of the decade as I don't know how a lot of them go. The 80's had some killer number ones and some utter tosh too. It'll be fun smile.gif

All my favourites still to come in this countdown - hope Pulp have clinched number one.

41 - Stardust "Music Sounds Better With You" (1998) (+17)

The only top 40 hit for Stardust is this, it came 5th in 'the best dance songs of all time' as voted by R1 listeners and the chart was revealed on Pete Tong's 20th anniversary. The number 2 song of that countdown 'Born Slippy' is still to come. Boyzone stopped Stardust from going to number one with their biggest hit "No Matter What"

HOW is this as low as #41? ohmy.gif It narrowly missed out on any points from me but this is an absolute classic! #41 just doesn't cut it.

This was number 2 for a week behind Pato Banton and spent five weeks in the top ten. They had 2 more hits after this, one of them went T10 and the other missed out by one spot

39 - Bruce Springsteen "Streets of Philadelphia" (1994) (+19)

This song was kept off the top by Doop for one week and it's Bruce Springsteen's highest charting single. He had lots of hits before and after this, including 'Dancing In The Dark' which went to number 4 (his second highest charting single)

38 - Ce Ce Peniston "Finally" (1992) (+19)

This spent one week at number two behind Shakespeare's Sister. It was first released in 1991 but peaked at 29 and it went to 26 on its 1997 re-release. Peniston had 3 T10 hits in total, this being her second.

37 - Fatboy Slim "Right Here Right Now" (1999) (+19)

This is the follow up to his number one hit 'Praise You' and his fourth out of six top ten hits. The song was unlucky to be released the same week as Westlife, which is why it missed number one.

36 - DNA feat. Suzanne Vega "Tom's Diner" (1990) (+21)

This song really deserved 3 weeks at number one, because novelty songs like 'Turtle Power' and 'Itsy... Bikini' were keeping it off. It's a good thing novelty songs don't get to number one these days, the only novelty no.1 of 2010 was JLS 'The Club Is Alive'. It is one of DNA's three T40 hits and the only T10 hit by them.

The first hit for Corona is this, it spent 2 weeks behind Whigfield. She had 2 more T10 hits after this and another 2 T40 hits before leaving the charts.

34 - Ace Of Base "Sign" (1994) (+22)

After their debut 'All That She Wants', AOB flopped with their next 2 singles peaking at 20 and 42. Then this single came around and they were back in the top ten, spending 9 weeks there with this including 3 non-consecutive weeks at number 2 behind Mariah Carey and Doop.

The second entry for Queen Madge, this time with Beautiful Stranger which spent a week at number 2 behind S Club 7. The next two follow-ups both went to number one in 2000 (American Pie and Music)

32 - Oasis "Roll With It" (1995) (+23)

This song lost to a chart battle with Blur "Country House" for two weeks. Oasis still have a song coming up on the countdown, and Blur have two. This was the band's fifth out of 23 T10 hits. Oasis have recently split up and Liam Gallagher has had another T40 hit with Beady Eye "The Roller" entering at 31

I think we could get more representative results if in the final round we ranked our Top 20 faves rather Top 10. More points to each songs, and probably a lot different results. Great work, Daniel.

Supergrass and Stardust both deserved far higher sad.gif I'm glad we're doing 80s number 1s, I think that will be interesting- and looking through the number 1s, I actually know quite a lot of them- you could do 00s number 2s afterwards as that too would be interesting
