QUOTE(CNBC) ABC announced on Tuesday that it would cancel the sitcom "Roseanne" following "abhorrent" comments from the star, Roseanne Barr, who had compared former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape.
“Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show," Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement Tuesday. "There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing," Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a tweet following the announcement. Disney is the parent company of ABC. Roseanne had apologized for her comments, in which she compared Jarrett to an ape, earlier in the day. Barr said of Jarrett in the since-deleted tweet: "muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj." “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans," Barr wrote on Twitter. "I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste." The actress had earlier defended the statement against other critics on the social media platform. “Roseanne" returned to television this year after an initial run in the 1980s and '90s. The show was an immediate hit, with more than 18 million viewers watching the premiere. Barr, whose provocative Twitter presence rankled ABC executives, has been an outspoken proponent of President Donald Trump. Trump congratulated Barr for the ratings success. The revival, which commanded a huge audience during its first season, had been renewed for a second season in March. Dungey is reportedly the first black female head of a major TV network. |

BIG news as the revival had been scoring massive ratings, with the first episode getting higher than the original finale. It has had a lot of attention towards it for being pro-Trump and the President himself even congratulated the show’s ratings (because TV ratings are definitely what he needs to focus on). No doubt Trump will make some remark

This is HUGE. It was the highest rated show of the season, the first time ABC has had that honour for nearly 25 years!! For them to step up an cancel this is a really really big deal.
Before we applaud ABC too heavily, questions should be asked about why this was even commissioned in the first place. The fact that Roseanne is a bigoted racist is hardly new. |

I mean they didn't know it would have those ratings when they commissioned it again lmao It was pretty obvious it was going to be a ratings winner. It seemed to fill a gap in the market for a sitcom that appealed to the sort of blue-collar audience that would be cultural Trumpians, a market that they more or less had a solo run on in sitcom-land (unless someone can think of another example). is it bad to say that I never got the hype in the first place? You probably weren't in the target audience. |

Ohhhh wow, fans are gonna be fuming about this, basically all of my older relatives have been watching it. Not looking forward to their complaints but at least I won't have to hear Roseanne's voice in my house anymore

Last Man Standing? My aunts/uncles were saying Roseanne and Last Man Standing were the only sitcoms they like on TV anymore, although they've never had seasons going on at the same time so your point still stands. I agree it was an obvious ratings winner.

I never liked Roseanne the person or the show and this whole outburst is no surprise.

Her response is to blame everyone else and go Trump-esque on co-stars, the public, the media, Hollywood and blow her own oversized ego.
No sense of real remorse at all the terrible things she has said to people as she spreads hate. Her show was never a comedy, it was more a light-hearted half-hour drama among low-paid Americans, which is why so many identified with it back in the day as they never get targeted by advertisers. Or at least the big-spending advertisers. same situation back in the early 70's when huge hits like Green Acres and Beverley Hillbillies were axed because they were regarded as low-brow, appealing to poorer older, less-educated folk. Advertisers wanted yuppie-type sitcoms. I'll take low-brow yuks anyday over racist stars getting a platform via a pretty dull sitcom largely supported by it's great cast. Roseanne was a terrible actor but at least she was a beacon for the low-paid back in the day. Her Ex has been saying some rather telling things.... |

Spin-off ‘The Connors’ is coming with most/all of the rest of the cast. Been confirmed that Roseanne will not profit in any way.
