Not seen Slumdog Millionaire even though I do think it looks pretty brilliant so my winner is different to the Academy's choice.

1 Ron Howard "Frost/Nixon"
2 David Fincher "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
3 Stephen Daldry "The Reader"
4 Gus Van Sant "Milk"

The top two are way out in front though. Howard just takes it for making lots of dialogue so enthralling, I was hooked the whole time with very little action going on - just the power of words. The bottom two are both pretty boringly directed though and would have turned out pretty similar with a different director behind the camera if I'm being honest.

I would have had Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler), Mike Leigh (Happy-Go-Lucky) & John Patrick Shanley (Doubt), perhaps even Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) who would have been a very inspired pick, in my top five instead but I think Howard would still have been my winner, this year was a really strong year but there were better choices for the Picture and Director categories in my opinion.
