glad r&b is getting it's own category, it being lumped in with pop never made sense to me.

R&B will go back to having its own genre category

I don't think it ever had its own category. The genres used to be Best 'Urban Act', 'Rock Act', 'Dance Act' and 'Pop Act' before they got rid of them all in 2006 (2004 for Dance).

Posted by: troylovesmusic 24th November 2023, 03:43 PM

Oh thank god R&B is getting there own category , loved that they actually listened to the complaints about that !

Yes you're right and I even thought it was wrong when I wrote it earlier oop

Posted by: Brer 25th November 2023, 01:52 AM

Both good changes there (although the fact they ever thought it was acceptable to put pop and R&B together as a single category was always questionable).

Mo Gilligan has stepped down from hosting as he'll be on tour in the US.

This year's BRITs Rising Star nominees are The Last Dinner Party, Caity Baser & Sekou.

That's surely a shoe-in for TLDP!

Posted by: Brer 29th November 2023, 06:36 PM

Maybe the first time there's ever been a Critics' Choice / Rising Star nominee that I have literally never heard of. (And one I wish I'd never heard of x)

Not massively excited about The Last Dinner Party either based on the 2 songs I've heard from them, 'Sinner' is pretty good, not keen on 'Nothing Matters'.

The Last Dinner Party have won the Rising Star category! cheer.gif

I would be so upset if I won a Brit and it was one of those ugly designs! Stick to the classic silver one nothing beats that!

Great news! If I have time I'll put some predictions together.

Kylie is reported to be performing a “mashup of greatest hits” - including ‘Padam Padam’ - potentially as part of the BRIT Icon Award or whatever there’re calling it nowadays.

Posted by: Tafty³³³ 19th January 2024, 01:42 PM

I can't call this year much at all. Usually there's one or two standouts, but I feel like in general, it's been quite an open field the last 12 months. Obviously the biggest talking point in the industry was Taylor's 'ERAs Tour' and the subsequent releases of 'Speak Now (TV)' & '1989 (TV)'. The latter being the most successful TV to date. Will 'Midnights' be in this year too or did that get all it's nominations last year, icr what the cut off point was for that album/era. But will she even get international artist or will they opt for Miley or Noah?

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 19th January 2024, 01:59 PM

Best British Album is an open playing field too.

I think four of them will be:

Blur - The Ballad of Darren
J Hus - Beautiful and Brutal Yard
Lewis Capaldi - Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent
RAYE – My 21st Century Blues

I guess other contenders could be The Rolling Stones, Maisie Peters, Nothing But Thieves & Jorja Smith - but I'm not confident on any of it!

Posted by: troylovesmusic 19th January 2024, 02:14 PM

Raye very much deserves her flowers tbh so I hope they don’t play in her face like the Grammys did !

To be fair it is The Sun reporting it and not The BRITs so whilst they may be right in their prediction the official news of everything is likely to come on Wednesday like normal.

A few predictions:

Blur - The Ballad of Darren
Jessie Ware - That! Feels Good
J Hus - Beautiful and Broken Yard

The Rolling Stones

Possibly Take That instead of Gorillaz. Sleep Token are my wildcard choice.

International Artist

Kylie Minogue
Lana Del Rey
Luke Combs
Miley Cyrus
Olivia Rodrigo
SZA
Taylor Swift

International Group

Boygenius
Foo Fighters

I have a feeling RAYE will do really well and win even artist and/or album, it'll be a big moment for her too. Hopefully she performs too!

Also, I'd really like to see Troye nominated somewhere. He deserves it after having a big year himself.

I know it won't happen but I want Doja Cat and Troye performances. I need Doja to get some UK TV exposure to show how good a performer she is to the casuals over here.

Mahalia and RAYE nominated for Best New Artist?

Mahalia got a Best Female nomination 4 years ago!

Meanwhile Chase & Status are nominated for Best Group, but not Dance Act too.

Indeed, Little Simz’ album only made #40! I believe that’s the cut-off for being eligible, so she was lucky.

RAYE being up for Best New Artist is absolutely ridiculous, debut album release or not tearsmile.gif and it's lazy of them to have her down for both Pop and R&B, and Calvin for Pop and Dance. A couple of other artists could've received a little recognition in those spots.

Firebabe sneak tearsmile.gif

Otherwise nothing too surprising. Glad Kylie got an International Artist nomination!

RAYE's breakthrough and the story behind it is quite inspiring so I can see why she's nominated for so many, correct or not. Shame about the Genre awards though, that's so lazy having the same artist up for both categories.

I mean I kind of understand why she’s in both Pop and R&B as she does fit in to both genres musically . The Best New Artist is very much a reach though they should really rename the category Best Breakthrough Act !

Lol at it still being called 'Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap' Act, when grime doesn't make the UK chart any more and hasn't done for years, its drill now.

Can’t quite understand some of these nominations.

Happy that Raye is getting recognition and her long awaited flowers. Maybe a BRITS performance could help push those album sales further too. (she’s not a new artist though but those other nominations are deserved). I think she could even get album too since there wasn’t a massive British album last year and Lewis isn’t nominated or Ed?!

Artists getting nominated without dropping an album as well (what is the criteria to be nominated you just need to have released a single) it’s hard to keep track laugh.gif

Nice to see females represented though.

Here's how I *think* it'll go down:

Best New Artist: RAYE [2nd Olivia; 3rd PinkPantheress]
Best Artist: RAYE [2nd Dave; 3rd Central Cee]
Best Group: Young Fathers [2nd Chase & Status; 3rd Blur]
Best International Group: Boygenius [2nd Paramore; 3rd Foo Fighters]
Best Dance Act: fred again... [2nd Becky Hill; 3rd Calvin Harris]
Best R&B Act: RAYE [2nd Mahalia; 3rd Sault]
Best Alternative/Rock Act: Bring Me The Horizon [2nd Blur; 3rd The Rolling Stones]
Best Hip-Hop/Grime Act: Central Cee [2nd Dave; 3rd J Hus]
Best Pop Act: Dua Lipa [2nd RAYE; 3rd Calvin]
Best International Artist: SZA [2nd Lana Del Rey; 3rd CMAT]
Best International Song: Noah Kahan [2nd SZA; 3rd Jazzy]
Best Album: RAYE [2nd Young Fathers; 3rd Blur]
Best Song: Dave/Central Cee [2nd Dua; 3rd RAYE] *They like awarding performers so I can't decide between Dua & Dave/Central here, but I imagine Dave should win but wouldn't be surprised if this is the one they gave to Dua*

Not sure I like the fan vote awards. Becky Hill is gonna win the Best Dance act award every year as no other dance act has the fan base who'll be voting every day.

Becky will have 3 Brits in as many years, whilst Calvin only has 2 over 10+ years.

Is that so? I would have imagined Fred again has more fans than her since now his records can debut top 20, which is something she can not dream of... even Calvin I'd say has more fans... I wouldn't put Becky as someone with a fanbase...

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 1st February 2024, 03:49 PM

Becky is also the only one campaigning, telling people how to vote for her on her Instagram story.

Fred, Calvin and Barry haven't posted anything about voting being open (yet), whereas Romy has just put it on her story.

I’d say she has more of a social media fan base. The type of people I know who listen to Fred Again would never be commenting on posts of his to vote for him at the BRITS. I’d say Becky has a young fan base who would do that but not as many casual fans like Fred Again, who would pop a new song of his on streaming when it pops up.

Ridiculous that the awards can be voted for 🙄

Posted by: lewistgreen 1st February 2024, 10:13 PM

I'm glad it's only the genre categories (of which I've voted this evening in) as I can imagine the stans ruining some of the other categories. I think they know what they doing by allowing the genre awards to be public voted as it limits but still allows for public interaction. It's no different to the NTAs for instance but there every award is public voted and no one bats an eye at that.

It just strikes me as an odd choice of performer, not only is it a 2022 song but it's also the only thing of note he's done and at this point seems likely to do.

It's like if Kevin Lyttle had performed in 2005 or something.

I still think there should be best female anf best male. The music industry is so male dominated anyway, with women's music often looked down on compared to the male indie bands, that it's faieer, and doubles the winners, which csn only be a good thing ina celebration of music?

They can double the nominees all they like, but one of the 5 male acts will win, seeing as they eere what they nominated foe it in the first place!

He did a medley in 2019 so I can’t see that happening again this year.

I feel like there’s been a few performers revealed where it seems likely they’ll be singing past hits, so maybe RAYE will be able to sing something that’s not Escapism.

Posted by: lewistgreen 25th February 2024, 07:43 PM

It would've made sense to keep the previous name 'Breakthrough Act' as at least then the nominations fit the name?

Mahalia has also been around since 2016, Olivia Dean since 2018, PinkPantheress 2020 and Yussef Dayes 2016 too so let's not solely drag RAYE through the dirt here when only one act in the category debuted in this decade.

Posted by: lewistgreen 27th February 2024, 08:14 PM

Yes it was David Guetta that won last year. Fatboy Slim presented the award to him.

However I don't think Fred again in 2020 or Inflo in 2022 went up to get their awards perhaps because they weren't there. I'm assuming because it's no longer a nominated category that if they're not in attendance then they won't be presented the award on stage.

I think Producer of the Year is generally not be acknowledged on the TV broadcast unless it's a big artist (I remember Calvin Harris having the award presented to him on air once iirc?) - I guess C&S probably will have it presented especially as they're obviously there to perform.

Songwriter of the Year was introduced 2 years ago but it's another one that doesn't get publicised as much and doesn't have a shortlist. Ed Sheeran and Kid Harpoon won it the last 2 years.

Still think the BRITS should bring back the Outstanding Contribution award for certain people who have been influential but long overlooked (Kate Bush, Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Raduiohead - How the hell did Pink get one over any of them?).

You could award it just before the newer Global Icon award so you get a big name semi-contemporary performer (like Kylie) to close the show.

And that, right there, is why the awards never get taken seriously.

Posted by: T Boy 2nd March 2024, 06:22 PM

Not that I’d doubt that the label bought the award for her, but people are so quick to do down Pink at any given moment. To have still been relevant that far into her career as a solo female is an outstanding achievement and plenty of artists have been influenced by her. Just because you think someone else deserved it first doesn’t mean that she didn’t deserve it.

At the end of the day, it’s another round of music snobbery.

Posted by: Sour Candy 2nd March 2024, 06:34 PM

I am not working in the industry and don't have the insight in that sense, but award shows always seem to me like big puzzles - who is active, who is not, who is available, who is not, who is willing to actually put on a performance and who is not.... Who knows how many options the BRIT organization go through each year.

What baffles me is that they seem to have gap years with these "lifetime achievement" awards for some reason. There are plenty of stars out there who DESERVE it (like the ones Severin mentioned).

I’d agree here.

From the females who debuted across my generation she’s easily sustained longevity across the longest span (I’d say her and Beyoncé have remained consistently relevant) yet P!nk is always downplayed and never mentioned amongst the main females in the game when she’s more than worthy of receiving accolades like that BRIT.

All credit to pink, I am a big fan myself, she is an incredible artist and deserves acknowledgement, it just stunk of record label buying it for promo for a brand new album.

Tbf very few people think she doesn’t deserve the award, it’s simply that others deserved it before she did. As said above Kate Bush and the Rolling Stones, literally how the hell they haven’t got it is gobsmacking. Then she remains the only non-British person to have win it and if you are going to award it to a none Brit then Madonna, Michael Jackson, Kylie Minogue, Cher and a whole host of others come to mind before Pink.

Flowers is the deserved winner from that category but her video recording was odd.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 2nd March 2024, 10:28 PM

At least Rema’s live band is making this song slightly more tolerable.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 2nd March 2024, 10:29 PM

I’m actually really enjoying this performance laugh.gif perhaps I should check out the original song again haha.

Posted by: Jade 2nd March 2024, 10:30 PM

Not the biggest 'Calm Down' fan but that performance was actually one of the better ones tonight, comes alive well on stage

Posted by: conorw 2nd March 2024, 10:30 PM

As much as I’m over calm down, I’m glad they switched it up a bit for this with the live band! It sounds great live this way!

Posted by: sammy01 2nd March 2024, 10:33 PM

Rema was actually decent, I'm a bit in shock

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 2nd March 2024, 10:34 PM

Completely removing the little suspense that was left by bringing him out!

Posted by: conorw 2nd March 2024, 10:35 PM

I’m so happy this album is getting its flowers, one of my favourite albums rver! Not like it was a tough competition tho oop

Bringing out her old teacher has just made the whole night feel a bit fixed.

Posted by: pippa 2nd March 2024, 10:36 PM

I did not expect Raye to win so many awards.

Posted by: No Sleeep 2nd March 2024, 10:36 PM

This Raye sweep feels so random. She hasn’t exactly dominated this past year

Posted by: Calum 2nd March 2024, 10:42 PM

I've not bothered with the BRITs for years, and tonight's just been a good reminder why. laugh.gif I like RAYE and she's a decent artist, but this (almost) complete sweep across the board is so odd. The goodwill towards her seems to have so much momentum more-so because of her story and the journey to get to where she is/was with the release of My 21st Century Blues, and not purely the music itself.

Bring it Kylie clap.gif

The Brits: here, have the best new artist award

!!!!!

Although we are talking about the cwremony that made up and rhen unceremoniously, deleted an award, just so that 1D could win an award one time. That was in return for them performing on the night, of course laugh.gif

Kylie sounded very ropey but she has the hits and seems genuinely nice.

Posted by: pippa 2nd March 2024, 11:04 PM

Posted by: Rooney 2nd March 2024, 11:49 PM

I like RAYE, but her clean sweep just feels so manufactured and a reaction to media backlash. Best Album? Really?!?!

Posted by: troylovesmusic 3rd March 2024, 12:33 AM

Raye deservedly swept . Escapism was literally everywhere worldwide and her breakthrough is not only inspiring but deserved !

Posted by: JLJ 3rd March 2024, 12:37 AM

Raye breaking records tonight.

Could we see quite a big impact re her album on the albums this week? I think it could get a lot of curiosity listens of the back of this and perhaps a sales boost too even a small sales boost would be enough though?

I do think she’s in a great position at the moment though regarding good will around her. I think if she follows up this album fairly soon (say early next year or even late this year with the first single) she could be in for quite a big sophomore album.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 3rd March 2024, 01:13 AM

I forgot until I saw someone mention that Escapism didn’t chart at all for a while after it released, until it took off on TikTok.

I wonder where her career would be if that never happened!

It’ll be interesting to see the ratings for this tomorrow, I suspect they’ll be the lowest yet. Hopefully someone will post the ratings from the last few years to compare.

It’s a shame it’s a Saturday show now and not midweek like it’s been in the past because I imagine some of the target audience may well have been out while it aired. It could possibly do good on catch up? But I do imagine they may well be low but possibly enough to still win for its time slot? I always watch (more from habit just as a music geek) but I always record it and watch it around 15-20 minutes later so I can skip the adverts. Without fail I end up watching it in real time towards the end as well laugh.gif

That was one of the most boring BRITs I've ever tuned in for, but I did really enjoy RAYE and Rema's performances (surprisingly so for the latter, I do like 'Calm Down' but I didn't expect the performance to be anything particularly interesting), Kylie was a good closer too. And tbf there were a few quite surprising award winners with most of those being pleasant surprises - thank god Becky didn't just get handed the dance award a third time in a row, was also happy with the wins for Bring Me The Horizon and SZA + nice to see a real curveball win from CASISDEAD although I'm not familiar with his music, it's just good to know they do sometimes give awards to completely unexpected people. RAYE winning Best New Artist is definitely questionable (out of all the winners of that award since 2016 the only one who had a top 75 hit before RAYE was Dua Lipa...!) but the nominee list for that was a trainwreck in general to be fair. I think all of her other awards were well deserved, I mean I'd have given AOTY to Young Fathers but that was never going to happen, her album was still very good.

The lowlight of the night (aside from the many completely flat attempts at humour from the hosts) had to be that terrible performance from Tate McRae - yes she's a good dancer but it's like she kept completely forgetting she's supposed to be a singer? laugh.gif Still love 'greedy' as a song but that performance did not sell it at all.

Posted by: Sour Candy 3rd March 2024, 06:17 AM

The same industry that rejected Raye in the first place is now rewarding her - you cannot make this shit up LOL

Anyway, great for her and I like her, but like I wrote earlier in this thread, the whole thing will look very odd in the future. And I wrote in the sales thread yesterday that the UK music industry needs new superstars. Dua, Ed and Adele cannot carry the whole industry on their shoulders forever.

Posted by: Jαsє 3rd March 2024, 06:28 AM

God the hosts were absolutely awful. Those flat and continued attempts at humour had me cringing so hard drama.gif

Posted by: Bjork 3rd March 2024, 06:52 AM

I do like Raye but from the noms it was 100% clear the industry had decided she was gonna win it all
Don't think her album deserved it
But biggest Lol had to be Raye performing Prada
I suggested she was gonna do it and someone laughed saying she hated the song lol

Posted by: hlavkus 3rd March 2024, 08:30 AM

Just watched Becky Hill and Chase & Status performance, and I love that they invited the guy from C&S Boiler Room as a backup dancer

Posted by: Y'all Starlight 3rd March 2024, 08:40 AM

Well, that was a Brit Award ceremony I guess....

Unsurprisingly I have to agree that the hosting was not great this year, but that's pretty normal for the Brits. 'Escapism.' winning song of the year at the beginning was a decent start (although, it was predictable when RAYE had so many nominations), easily my favourite from the category by a long way. I didn't really know who was going to win best group (except for Headie X K-Trap) but Jungle's last album was great to very deserved (I think I would've preferred Chase & Status or Young Fathers tho). I'm impressed with RAYE's sweep but it does get a little boring when the same artist is continually going back and forth to the stage. Still kinda peeved about RAYE winning best new artist (I know this is like a career rebirthing for RAYE but she could've easily been nominated for it between 2018-2019 imo, same for Mahalia) but if she stopped Olivia Dean from winning it then we're good x. Dula Peep winning Best Pop from only releasing three singles, our flop kween delivered (she always gives a good speech as well)! Calvin winning Best Dance is a better result than what I thought would occur in that category but I fear everyone (bar Becky Hill) deserved the award more than him oop. Nice to see BMTH's first win, I really liked 3/4 singles they released last year but I think I would've preferred to see Young Fathers get the win (they looked pretty sad whenever they lost an award sad.gif). Underdog Casisdead getting an award was unexpected and expected for me at the same time laugh.gif I knew he had quite a dedicated fanbase so I'm sure they would've been constantly voting every day for this win (I still would've preferred to see Simz or Dave pick this one up). SZA winning was a huge shock but I'm over the moon for it, a much more deserved winner in comparison to Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift's works in late 2022-2023. Boygenius winning is pretty cool but Miley winning best song (I understand why tho ofc) wacko.gif

Dua's opening performance was solid! I'm also wondering why they didn't squeeze in 'Houdini' but nvm. The performance of 'Miracle' fell a little flat for me at first but the addition of the Hardwell remix towards the end picked up the pace for the better. Tate McRae & Jungle delivered pretty unmemorable performances oop. Tate performs 'Greedy' like that whenever she performs it unfortunately, I really don't like that style of singing two lines and then skipping six. An unremarkable performance from Becky Hill as well (even 'Baddadan' couldn't save it cheeseblock.png). Agreed that Rema's performance was actually really good! It changed from a boring and bland song to a really fun track. I think Selena Gomez is the problem kink.gif RAYE's performance was by far the best tho (she even made 'Prada' sound like a masterpiece, DBE could never). I'm yet to see the full Kylie performance as I fell asleep at the start lol.

Posted by: Cow P 3rd March 2024, 08:51 AM

Okay, Calvin needs to credit Hardwell if he decided to release that original x remix live edit (cuz he already did, with Hardwell uncredited).

She’s put some foil Brits special cds of the album up a la Lewis Capaldi which got him #1 in the first week of Jan! They’re a fiver but shipping is £7 so not sure how many she’ll sell of those. Could be a small boost I’d imagine though

Yeah, and I actually haven’t denied that point. I just saying she deserved it regardless of that point and regardless of the fact that others may have deserved it too. I mean, you’d probably argue with me that Spice Girls deserved winning it just 3 years and 2 albums into their career before all those artists you’ve listed when really that was also a dubious award at the time. But they don’t get played down on this site the way Pink does so some other posters always target Pink’s success to play down first.

And just to clarify, I’m not saying you play down Pink’s success, I’m just stating that many here do.

As for the show, I didn’t watch as I was out last night and I don’t tend to bother with it these days anyway unless I really want to see someone perform. I’ll try and check out Kylie’s performance but I wasn’t too interested in this year’s show. I’m happy Raye has done well as she’s always seemed like a great person and it’s been sad to see her struggles just to get an album out there. I haven’t actually checked out her album, is it any good?

If I was running the awards I would have a criteria in place that no artist can win the award until 25 years from the start of their career, so that their true contribution can be properly measured. With the benefit of hindsight the Spice Girls certainly warrant one for the impact they had but there was a definite whiff of cashing in on their popularity at the time.

As for Pink she'd be about eligible now, she's a very successful, talented and enduring artist but realistically she's not even close to being the most important female singer of her generation. Her influence is only just starting to be clear with people like Cassyette and may well be more obvious in the future. Her time would come.

Whereas, for example, Black Sabbath defined and invented an entire genre of music. Radiohead spawned a ton of bands in their wake. Kate Bush, The Rolling Stones, Joy Division, the list goes on. And as someone said if we're picking overseas acts - Presley, Abba, Kool Herc, Springsteen, Dylan, Prince, Madonna, Franklin, Kraftwerk, Grandmaster Flash and many more all have towering legacies to popular music that should be far ahead in the queue.

But again, I haven’t stated that she deserved the award more than anyone else, just that she did deserve it. Loads of artists have one it less than 25 years into their career and yet Pink is the one gets criticised time and again. It’s clear why the Brits make their decisions on these things and that it’s usually opportunistic for them as much as the artist. Pink was launching a new album and they wanted her to perform so she got the award. Kylie got hers last night instead of any other year she could have had it because she’s had somewhat of a revival this year. I’m pretty sure Blur had a new album in the works when they won it. U2 and Petshop Boys also had new material out when they won. The fact is there is no queue and anyone arguing that the award is given purely on some measured merit and nothing else is deluding themselves. There aren’t enough years to give out the award to absolutely everyone that deserves it so there is always going to be another motive behind the choice-usually, who will actually come and perform? Kate Bush is one of my favourite artists but she will never come and perform at the Brits to receive the award.

I just tire of the playing down of Pink and her success as an artist. So many fit the bill of what people are complaining about but Pink is the one people go in on.

But it is still awarded on merit regardless. Everyone to have received one has been deserving, it’s just that they also use opportunity to decide which of the deserving artists receive it when. The artists have still had long and distinguished careers even if it could be argued others are more deserving. We shouldn’t be trying to take anything away from them.

The fact is if you’re going to argue the point, the whole of the Brit Awards is meaningless and always have been. They’ve rarely been that deep.

Jungle's album wasn't as acclaimed as those two, and it wouldn't really look very diverse to have exactly the same nominees in album as male/female/group, they've done it once before and it looked really bad. Saying that though, no idea why they won, Young Fathers and Blur made far, far more critical impact, that felt really random, almost like a compensation for their music being used in trailers? :')

I'm pleased for RAYE and it is nice to have a home-grown tale of success (and for someone that's not really a household name either), but it does feel less like a genuine moment and more the industry trying to have their cake and eat it, all these headlines and patting themselves on the back don't change that they initially rejected her and wouldn't have given her a second thought had she not had mainstream success.

Can't say there's a lot that excites me here otherwise, all pretty predictable bar Casisdead, was really hoping Caroline Polachek would win something but no </3

The most recent weekday show (2022) had just 2.7m overnight figures, so I agree that it probably wouldn't have helped much.

Looking at its ratings history though, it's never really pulled in massive numbers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brit_Awards#Viewing_figures

Interesting to see that it got to as low as 3.84m in 2014 though, before bouncing back up to 5.99 a year later. An Ant & Dec impact presumably.

Posted by: lewistgreen 3rd March 2024, 03:31 PM

I wouldn't say younger people aren't into the awards but there's certainly alternative methods of consuming the hype and results without watching the show live on TV. Social media was really busy last night discussing the results and all of the results were posted on various apps and YouTube too so it's easier to get the snippets instead of sitting through 2 and a half hours of TV. ITVX viewing figures are not included in the overnights so it may bump up slightly if people were streaming or catching up (like I did this morning).

This is where we fundamentally disagree, there are several recipients I wouldn't consider worthy of an 'outstanding contribution to music' award, but each to their own.

Posted by: sammy01 3rd March 2024, 03:57 PM

A few points, iirc the Spice Girls got the outstanding contribution to music award as someone pulled out who was going to get it (cant remember who it was).

The Brits also used to have a rule where you had to perform part of a hit in the eligibilty period, hence the Spice Girls did Wannabe into WDYTYA in '97. Dua got the night off to a really flat start by singing a song most people don't care for or haven't heard much. Dance the night away would have got it off to a much better start.

The silly really long catwalk stage design doesn't help anyone, it is too long. A normal stage with maybe a small catwalk or not at all with a proper pit of regular fans would bring more atmosphere. Also awards given out on the main stage too.

The presenters going into the audience to annoy artists who clearly don't want to be involved in silly skits needs to stop too. It is painful.

Don't nominate people in more than one category, Raye in R&B and pop makes no sense. Her speech for her R&B award she was saying how others fought for an R&B category to show it is worthy alone to then shove her in pop to to prop up another nomination was rubbish. There are plenty of pop artists to fill it.

Kylie should have gotten her award after her performance. It was odd to have her get the award then have the presenters waffle for 3 minutes while she gets ready to perform. Have the global icon perform then someone walk on and hand them the award and let them thank everyone.

I was looking through the BRITs eligibility list, and it's interesting to see that the R&B Award covers 24 months:

QUOTE
For 2024, R&B will be one of five genre awards, along with Alternative/Rock, Dance, Pop and Hip Hop/Grime/Rap, ensuring visibility for UK R&B artists at The BRIT Awards, with the five genre awards collectively showcasing the tremendous versatility, creativity and diverse musical styles of British music. Eligibility for the R&B Award will cover a 24-month period as opposed to the usual 12 months to ensure that artists that released music in those two years qualify and are eligible.

I actually don’t think Spice Girls deserved it either and technically they did not win it. The award was changed that year from Lifetime achievement to Outstanding achievement in recognition of their record breaking success. It was always Outstanding Contribution before that. It got changed to the Icon Award in 2012 so they could effectively give Elton John yet another one -
