It is being rumoured that Theresa May will refuse to give John Bercow a peerage when he steps down as Speaker. That raises an interesting question. All his predecessors have left the Commons immediately as they have gone straight to the Lords. If Bercow is snubbed, would he be obliged to leave the Commons? Given our lack of a written constitution, I suspect he wouldn't be, Therefore, he could stay on as an independent and speak his mind.

leading the era of the party and seeing it sequester must be horrendous but it’s her own doing there seems to be a really strong lack of pragmatic vision; young british people feel very european and don’t get the maaschtrict vision of the past...it’s very post colonial and alien and SHIT we are wrestling with two very different identities one stuffy colonial of the past and one open, engaging of the future |

In the latest chapter in the long-running "You couldn't make it up" saga, the Telegraph repots today that Tories are outraged at the suggestion that electoral law might be enforced rather more vigorously than it has been hitherto. Any ideas why they (the party that has always liked to be seen as "the party of law and order") might not like that suggestion?

Chope has form on this, but that didn't stop May awarding him a knighthood in the New Year Honours. Chope is at it again. This time he has blocked a Bill that aimed to tighten the law on female genital mutilation. Christchurch voters must be so proud. |

He also tried to block the amalgamation of the new Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole council (to save money) because he needs his own little Empire to rule in, despite having no actual basis for believing the small borough could survive on it's own (it can't support the cost of the sheer numbers of old people needing care for a start) and despite no other council wanting them he tried to get it moved out of Dorset and back into Hampshire or the New Forest (who didn't want them either).
