I assume the statement is linked to the reported offer of talks with other party leaders - a mere 2 1/2 years late.

It is being rumoured that Theresa May will refuse to give John Bercow a peerage when he steps down as Speaker. That raises an interesting question. All his predecessors have left the Commons immediately as they have gone straight to the Lords. If Bercow is snubbed, would he be obliged to leave the Commons? Given our lack of a written constitution, I suspect he wouldn't be, Therefore, he could stay on as an independent and speak his mind.

16 January: Theresa May insists it's time to put self-interest aside and the national interest first
20 January: No more cross party talks as the overriding policy is to avoid a Tory party split

she’s a diehard bleed-til-i-die tory

leading the era of the party and seeing it sequester must be horrendous but it’s her own doing

there seems to be a really strong lack of pragmatic vision; young british people feel very european and don’t get the maaschtrict vision of the past...it’s very post colonial and alien and SHIT

we are wrestling with two very different identities one stuffy colonial of the past and one open, engaging of the future

In the latest chapter in the long-running "You couldn't make it up" saga, the Telegraph repots today that Tories are outraged at the suggestion that electoral law might be enforced rather more vigorously than it has been hitherto. Any ideas why they (the party that has always liked to be seen as "the party of law and order") might not like that suggestion?

I'm sure any party in power that wishes to spend it's way to victory by ignoring the rules would be upset a tad, and any party that played by the rules would be very happy to support the rules. Feel certain when it's explained to them, all Tory politicians will see the logic and fairness and support it. Otherwise they might come over as undemocratic hypocritical elitist power-mad desperados laugh.gif

QUOTE(Suedehead2 @ Jun 15 2018, 06:05 PM) *
The National Audit Office has published a report on the introduction of Universal Credit. This policy - championed by Iain Duncan Smith - has been beset by problems from the start. It is due to be rolled out to cover all claimants the year; so far, just 10% of claimants are on the system five years after the roll-out started.

The NAO report - to summarise - says that it has been a failure and has not delivered the cost savings promised. The principle was perfectly reasonable. It was meant to bring together various different benefits into one simple system However, there is a reason no minister had tried it before. It isn't at all simple. Allowing it to be introduced by someone as dim as Iain Duncan Smith was a near guarantee of failure.

Then we move on to this afternoon. A Lib Dem MP attempted to introduce a Bill making up-skirting a criminal offence. The co-sponsors of the Bill included Tory and Labour MPs. It had the backing of the government. However, a Tory (Phillip Davies) talked for hours on a different Bill to try and ensure this Bill wasn't discussed due to lack of time. When it was reached, another Tory (Christopher Chope) shouted "Object". Due to the rather weird rules, that was enough to block the Bill. Chope has form on this, but that didn't stop May awarding him a knighthood in the New Year Honours.

Chope is at it again. This time he has blocked a Bill that aimed to tighten the law on female genital mutilation. Christchurch voters must be so proud.

Besides the point. Crotchety decrepit fossil doing his usual MO of blocking any Private Member Bill that doesn't fit into his 1950s world view while planning half a dozen of his own useless outdated bills... is all that's happening here.

It is not a purely Islamic practice. Most branches of Islam do not practise it while some branches of Christianity do. There is no mention of it in either the Koran or the Bible.

OK, noted - but there is still no legitimate reason for it (or circumcision), especially not on children unable to give informed consent!

He also tried to block the amalgamation of the new Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole council (to save money) because he needs his own little Empire to rule in, despite having no actual basis for believing the small borough could survive on it's own (it can't support the cost of the sheer numbers of old people needing care for a start) and despite no other council wanting them he tried to get it moved out of Dorset and back into Hampshire or the New Forest (who didn't want them either). One might assume he has a grudge now against his fellow Tory who over-ruled him, Sajid Javid, who is a little bit Muslim-ey, albeit lapsed-ish and purely co-incidentally.

Can we have a 'Failing Grayling' thread ?

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/audio/...brexit-planning

I like this description of him: “Chris Grayling is like Mr. Blobbly. He defies all attempts at contextualization. He just whirls through ministerial briefs, pulverising everything he comes into contact with, screaming his own name into the abyss.”

a fab case of character assassination from abroad on T. May:

Key quotes from Tory Matthew Paris on how stupid, mean, and hated she is, and how hateful and petty she is towards others. Among her own party! These are her colleagues and I'm sure we will all be aghast at those suggestions having any basis for truth in them, cos it's SO unlike her......

Yes, I read that at the weekend. Trouble is, all her likely successors are at least as bad.
