http://www.ledburyreporter.co.uk/news/l ... um=twitter SINGER-SONGWRITER Will Young picked up a pair of antique bicycles - and a parking ticket - when he paid a visit to Hay-on-Wye last week. Ranked as one of the most recognisable figures in British contemporary music, the 38-year-old was back in town after charming his audience at Hay Festival where he performed on stage with his band earlier this month. Rumours quickly circulated that the affable singer, who rose to fame after his success in the 2002 ITV talent show, Pop Idol, was staying at a hotel in the town centre. Word also had it that the award-winning star was spotted browsing in local antique shops – and that he may be about to settle in the area. Later he dropped by at the 16th century riverside Bridge Inn, Michaelchurch Escley where he was warmly welcomed by staff. Said pub owner, Glyn Bufton: "He was fantastic, such a nice bloke. He said he came to The Bridge because he had heard how amazing the food is, and what a stunning location we are in.” The star agreed to pose with staff for a photograph taken on the bridge over the Escley, a tributary of the River Monnow. During the afternoon, shoppers and visitors to Hay noticed Will driving a bright yellow customised van which was parked in the rear car park at Kilverts Inn and Hotel. A spokesman for the Kilverts inn and Hay Tap said he was unable to confirm whether the celebrity was staying with them. Earlier the star, nominated in 2013 for the Laurence Olivier Award for best actor in a musical after appearing in the London revival of the musical, Cabaret, had pulled up in a restricted public parking space in front of the hotel in Hay's Bull Ring. One local man said the celebrity's van had exceeded the one-hour parking limit and received a parking ticket. "What a shame for him, it probably wasn't a lot for him to pay, but for someone on a tight budget something like that could ruin their day out," he said. It is understood that Mr Young bought two veteran bikes as a result of his trawl around Hay's antique shops. The proprietor selling the bikes said that he was "extremely nice" and praised him for supporting local shops. Businesses in and around town will be hoping that the singer does not follow the advice of one of his best-known songs in which he considers whether he should 'Leave right now'. |

@WillYoung: The word ‘gay’ should not be used as a derogatory term http://trib.al/qcPptLN QUOTE Will Young: The word ‘gay’ should not be used as a derogatory term
Will Young is, by his own admission, lazy. Really lazy. His primary aim, he says, is to sit on the sofa with his dogs and watch Netflix. It’s a revelation that some might find odd. Since Young shot to fame aged 23 after winning ITV’s Pop Idol in 2002, he has resolutely refused to bow to the cliché that reality TV stars eventually fade to nothing. He is now a singer, songwriter, actor and activist. He has sold more than eight million albums, starred in the West End and written an autobiography. And he’s showing no signs of slowing. He’s launched a podcast, is writing two scripts, and has a record out next year. Sense of jeopardy According to Young, though, he’s not that busy. “I don’t rush from meeting to meeting,” he says. “I used to rush around a lot. I’m probably a lot more relaxed than I used to be. To be honest, I just don’t really care.” He used to care a lot. “The sense of jeopardy I had, I don’t have that any more. And that’s really freeing.” Perhaps this is why, when I speak to Young, he appears more confident, more sure of himself, than I expect him to be. He is eager and lively when talking about subjects he feels passionately about and quick to steer me away from avenues he doesn’t want to venture down. When I ask about Strictly Come Dancing (Young famously withdrew from the BBC competition halfway through the 2016 series, later revealing he was suffering from post-traumatic stress), he bats my question away, saying: “I feel like that chapter’s kind of done for me now.” By contrast, when I mention Pop Idol, the reality show which made him famous 15 years ago and which I’m convinced he will be sick of talking about, he reacts with unbridled glee. “I love Pop Idol!” he cries. Taking stock We’re speaking ahead of the BBC’s Gay Britannia series, which will see Young perform at BBC Radio 2’s I Feel Love festival, a special concert live from Hull in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality. It’s an opportunity to take stock, says Young, whose biggest concern is that no one is talking about the issues faced by the young LGBT community. “If you’re bullied for, let’s say, religion or race or even gender, then hopefully there might be some sanctuary at home. That’s not true for LGBT people.” The school playground, in particular, worries him. he says. “That’s not true for LGBT people because quite often there’s a shame of coming out at home.” He is disturbed, too, by the high suicide rate among the young LGBT community. The use of gay as a derogatory word – in the playground and beyond – is one thing he would like to see change. “People just need to be educated, they don’t need to be punished.”The majority of homophobic bullying, he adds, takes place towards young, straight men. “Anyone that’s girly or seen as bad is called gay.” Though he himself wasn’t bullied at school, Young admits he grew up in a system where to be gay was wrong. It was, he says, “the worst kind of insult”. Homophobia Young came out to the public in March 2002, a month after winning Pop Idol. Rumour has it that a tabloid newspaper threatened to reveal his sexuality before Young beat them to it. Again, it’s a subject he won’t be drawn on. The singer is open about his past experiences with homophobia. “I’ve had to run away from knife threats, hide in shops. I’ve also taken people on.” He tells me about a time, on a street in Oxford, when he called out three young men for being homophobic – partly to guarantee his own safety and partly to shame the perpetrators. “The whole of the street turned against them and I think that was a palpable sign of how it’s simply not tolerated now.” An LGBT version of Woman’s Hour His new podcast, billed as a Woman’s Hour for LGBT people, will address issues such as these. Homo Sapiens was the innovation of Young’s friend, director and writer Chris Sweeney, who came up with the idea after listening to the coverage of Woman’s Hour’s 70th anniversary. He pitched the idea to Young and they decided to collaborate, buying a microphone and setting up in Sweeney’s iamspamspamami “I feel like there is a space for it,” says Young. “It’s such a rich tapestry of topics and subjects that we can tackle.” The pair wrote letters to people they want to appear on the podcast. Guests so far include journalist Owen Jones, human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and transgender actress and comedian Rebecca Root. “Overall, there’s a sense of safety, of respect. There’s a deep level of understanding. Being different, in a minority, is quite uniting.” When I ask whether – as Jenni Murray has said of Woman’s Hour – Young hopes that Homo Sapiens will one day become irrelevant, he admits he doesn’t. “Because I really enjoy it,” he says, laughing. Then he sobers up. “I’m made up of very different things. I went to public school, I’m white, I’m gay, I have two dogs, I don’t like eating liver,” he says. “I’m happy to have a show or a conversation that is centred around a topic or an interest that unites us.” So, it seems, the podcast will continue long into the future. If its host can be bothered to switch off Netflix and clamber off the sofa, that is. Will Young is performing at I Feel Love, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 and the BBC Red Button on Saturday from 8-9.30pm. The ‘Homo Sapiens’ podcast is out now; listen at homosapienspodcast.com |

QUOTE Queer as Art...Saturday 9pm - 10pm BBC Two
REVIEW by David Butcher This glance back at queer influence in British culture is a great watch, alive with insights and observations, with everyone from Sandi Toksvig to David Hockney to Richard Coles giving their take on the landmarks and tensions of the past 50 years. Bear in mind that, despite the title, it is mainly about pop culture, touching on David Bowie and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Larry Grayson and Queer as Folk. In the music sphere, Simon Napier-Bell argues that gay culture “is as influential in British pop music as black culture has been to American pop music” (Discuss). Then in a lovely unguarded moment Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw suggests (very plausibly) that, compared to the heyday of gay influence in the 1970s and 80s, pop culture is now generally blander or, as he puts it, “Everything has sort of been middle-of-the-roaded.” Then he adds anxiously “Oh s***, I can’t say that. I’ll be fired.” SUMMARY The BBC continues to mark the 50th anniversary of decriminalisation of male homosexuality in the UK with its Gay Britannia season. This time, the focus falls on the LGBT contribution to the arts scene in the past half-decade, as Stephen Fry, David Hockney, Anthony Sher, Alan Cumming, Will Young and Alan Hollinghurst share their perspectives on the distinctive voices the community has brought to British cultural life. Also includes contributions by Val McDermid, Wayne Sleep, Julie Goodyear, Sandi Toksvig, Russell T Davies and many more. |

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/09/06/wi ... -shitfest/
Leave right now: Will Young labels Theresa May’s Conservative government a ‘shitfest’ Singer Will Young has laid into Theresa May’s Conservative government in an exclusive interview with PinkNews. The Leave Right Now singer criticised the government over a deal it made with the DUP, which opposes LGBT rights in Northern Ireland. In bold new comments, Young labelled Theresa May’s DUP deal “disgusting” – saying it puts LGBT rights at risk. Will Young, 38, told PinkNews: “The DUP I think, I mean that whole things a shitfest isn’t it – the sooner the Conservatives get out the better.” The singer, who is currently promoting his LGBT podcast HomoSpaiens, said Theresa May’s deal left him furious. Asked if it was unacceptable that Theresa May had allowed the DUP power, he told PinkNews: “Yes! I think it’s disgusting. “I think it’s opportunism from the beginning to the end that election and I think it shows stupidity actually. “I mean bringing things like fox hunting to the forum. “I could’ve done a better job at that election, and I’m an idiot. They seriously let themselves down at that election. “They showed their true colours which is quite often a sense of entitlement and arrogance. Listen, you can’t polish a turd can you?” However the singer would not be drawn on who he backs for PM. He told PinkNews: “I’m actually bi-partisan. What I have enjoyed is a rise in young people becoming more politically minded. “I think it’s quite easy for people to say ‘screw the system’. And we all enjoy doing that. “But there has to be something behind it. “I think the navigation of mainstream media by Labour was and is really exciting.” The openly gay Pop Idol winner has launched his own LGBT podcast in recent months. HomoSapiens is intended to be a new LGBT version of Woman’s Hour, hosted with his friend Chris Sweeney. Homo Sapiens is out now. Listen at homosapienspodcast.com |

So, he's apparently.....
never going in a recording studio again never releasing another record http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/event/arti...erils-fame.html Firstly, I'm angry, he can't just generalize all our fans years and years of support as unhappy time of his life. There's a little bit of now I've made my money, cya! Also, it's all abit coincidental timing that this is at the same time he's lost his record deal with Island Records, the sales were lower than hoped is that REALLY why he's quiting. Surely if the sales had been better he'd have continued, it's all abit timed nicely.. I'm sorry if he has so many issues with it all, how is he still performing on stage every night in theatre but Strictly was too much pressure? Just doesn't add up for me. I'm one of those fans who has supported him for SIXTEEN years now. I support his music. Nothing else. I never cared for the rest of it all. oh and selling the BRiT Awards PUURRLEASE! We helped him win those awards I remember how much time and effort went into it by his fans including me and it meant so much when he won that Best Breakthrough Brit Award. I'm kinda mad if i'm honest! Fair enough, health and wellbeing trumps being a popstar but he's still doing other things he's successful at. It just all seems a lousy excuse to be honest. He could easily put out records if he wanted to....Does he not realize he has fans who have supported his entire career? I would have expected a official statement on his website or something, he's owes us that right? |
