BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ RESULTS: Should have been singles!

HONORARY MENTIONS:

"ANYWHERE WITH YOU" from Living For The Weekend (4 VOTES)

This fun, summery, car windows down track made an excellent addition to the girls latest full studio album; "Living For The Weekend". Some love it, some hate it with it's Katy Perry pop banger sound mixed with a Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" esque sounding intro, yet it's demo sound and corny lyrics are what let this track down.

"LEASE MY LOVE" from Living For The Weekend (5 VOTES)
Yet another with mixed opinions, this R&B Stomper which was originally Rihanna demo by hitmakers Darkchild and Prisilla Renea is also a great addition to their latest full album.

"WISH I DIDN'T KNOW" from On Your Radar (5 VOTES)
A beautiful ballad written by the girls, with an almost familiar sounding melody, great vocals, minimal autotune and nice harmonies.

"PUPPET" from Headlines! (5 VOTES)

This was an instant favourite for many after the release of the girls Golden mini album "Headlines!", the track received some unexpected yet very minimal airplay during January 2011 after rumours started spreading that it would be released as the albums 3rd single. Let's all admit, the performance during the Headlines! Tour was amazing and left us all wishing there was a video!
CHART PREDICTION: Top 10
Reviews: Mainly positive

"KEEP HER" from Chasing Lights (5 VOTES)
This early Sats track was performed from the very start when the girls were supporting Girls Aloud and doing small gigs to get their name out there, leaving a great impression with it's strong, anthemic, electronic, girlpower sound and lyrics.
CHART PREDICTION: Top 20
Reviews: Mainly positive

"HERE STANDING" from Wordshaker (5 VOTES)

The beautiful, stand together, strong ballad that was rumoured to be Wordshakers 3rd single, leaving us the question "Why the hell not!?!". One can only assume due to Ego not going top 5, or due to the fact that it was around the time the girls told Jayne where to go. After listening, you cannot help but to hear similarities with Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown track "No Air", but that's not a bad thing right?
CHART PREDICITION: Top 15
Reviews: Positive

"WALKING THROUGH THE DESERT" from The Finest Selection (5 VOTES)

A very different sound for the girls, but let's face it, it works! When you hear it on The Finest Selection, you cannot help but be fooled by it's singleworthiness. Maybe if What Are You Waiting For? did not flop so bad, we could have seen a My Heart Takes Over esque video, but in a desert instead. Art.
CHART PREDICTION: Top 40
Reviews: Positive

"LAST CALL" from On Your Radar (6 VOTES)
Probably the girls most beautiful ballad to date, Last Call remains a fan favourite and a highlight of On Your Radar. It showcases great songwriting, lyrics, vocals and harmonies. It also bares similarities to hit Adele songs. Win.

10. "White Lies" from On Your Radar

A smash hit which faded into grey-uh, but it just won't go away-uh in our heads (see what I did there), produced by Britney hitmaker "Rami Yacoub" and written by Miss Wroldsen "notorious" for writing the girls biggest hits! The song gives us an idea of what a Calvin Harris collab could have sounded, with it's big sound similar to hits at the time "We Found Love"by Rihanna and later in 2012 "Call My Name" by Cheryl. Could the track have had similar success? You decide! Definately a highlight of the album and the girls career.

9. "Wordshaker" from Wordshaker

Yes the girls invented a word! The title track of their less than well received second album, was one of the albums highlights, aswell as a highlight of their "Work Tour". It's stompy, grinding, R&B beat and sassy lyrics are a total win! It even had a dance which could easily be learnt, the track also had promo on the "Hollyoaks Music Show".

Love this Juliano! White Lies was definitely deserving of a Top 10 placing, if not Top 5.

EDIT: Wordshaker is flawless too.

Posted by: Juliano 29th January 2015, 12:15 AM

8. "Faster" from On Your Radar

The girls went "Up", they went "Higher", then they went "Faster!". Yet another Wroldsen and Mac creation, with ballad like lyrics over a Alexis Jordan "Happiness-esque" beat and another highlight from the underestimated "On Your Radar", could this song have saved the albums campaign had it been released as a single? I believe much like "Puppet", the song also recieved some airplay in around January or February time of 2012, maybe due to rumours that it would become the albums fourth single. However shortly after it was announced the girls were to record a video for "The Way You Watch Me", until ofcourse filming was cancelled and 30 Days came along not after, which has a similar feel don't you think?

7. "Leave A Light On" from Living For The Weekend

The obvious choice for sixth single on Living For The Weekend was "Leave A Light On" written by Glee's; Amber Riley. Simple production, nice lyrics, great vocals and mass appeal! You have to admit the song had a lot of potential to be a worldwide hit if the radios still supported the girls. There was a lot of discussion whether the girls would release this or Not Giving Up as the fifth single. I feel the girls made the right choice, however would not have been upset by them choosing this.

Amazing list so far! But surprised to see Leave A Light On ahead of Faster.

Hurricane was probably humming White Lies as she posted that. In denial.

Last before the top 5! (I will continue with the top 5 tomorow).

6. "Chasing Lights" from Chasing Lights

The amazing, the beautiful, the iconic Chasing Lights, the title track from the girls first album, has been a fan favourite since we first heard it years ago. Also a favourite of the girls, they have performed the song in many places, including to secure themselves an American record deal. It's clear to see why, with it's catchiness, amazing lyrics, breathtaking vocals and stunning production.

'Wordshaker' is a really strong album track - I love it. Not sure if it would work as a single though.
'Leave a Light On' I like a lot less, but think it would work a lot more as a single.

Posted by: Juliano 30th January 2015, 04:35 AM

So the top 5 coming today! Starting with...

5. "LOSE CONTROL" from Wordshaker

This bouncy, snappy, selfconfident pop track, produced by Britney and Steps hitmaker Jörgen Elofsson, found it's way into the massive movie franchise that was; "St. Trinian's 2" in one of the films most iconic scenes. It was also used as the theme tune for a few TV Shows, including "Snog, Marry, Avoid!". The track was also a highlight of the girls "Headlines! Tour". The use of the track made it differcult not to wish that it was released, atleast as a promotional single (similarly to the Girls Aloud track from St. Trinian's), also due to the fact Wordshaker produced only 2 single releases, both of which were successful. Again maybe due to Ego only charting at #9 or the sacking of Jane was the reason it was not released. However, this bubblegum tune isn't for everbody due to it's pretty cliche lyrics and girly beats, which could be another reason?

Haha! I'm not crazy about it either, I wouldn't have minded it as a promo single though, if it was 3rd single I would have been angry, but as a.... 5th single? Haha!

4. "WILDFIRE" from Gentleman & Living For The Weekend (Deluxe)

There was so many great fanmade covers, I didn't know which to pick, but I love this one! Anyway... Next up is the B-side that just somehow lost out to "Turn Myself In" in the B-sides B+I... yes I'm still bitter... which is also the track which should have been the follow up to What About Us (as an A-side), it takes us back in time, to Summer 2013... it is the amazing WILDFIRE, WILDFIRE! Instant ear candy, with it's great production and catchiness, featuring the girls; iconic, electronic, popdance sound, it leaves many people with the question why it wasn't a single and how it ended up as the b-side to; the mostly disliked follow up to (their first number 1) What About Us. A very controversial decision.

3."ONE SHOT" from Wordshaker

We all knew this would make the top 3! Everybody is still scratching their heads at why this wasn't released as the lead single from Wordshaker... or as a single in general. It got a second chance for release when the supposed disguised "Single Mix" was included on "Headlines!", yet it was still not released. A highlight on both "The Work Tour" AND "The Headlines! Tour", also coming with it's own simple dance move, so everyone could join in! This grinding, stomper of a song shows the girls attitude, sass, power and fiestiness.

One Shot is one of the biggest 'ones that got away'. It would've been a big hit whether released after "Ego" or "Higher".

and up next we have...

2. "GET READY, GET SET" from On Your Radar

It was obviously going to end in the Top 3, the song we all loved from the moment we heard the previews and someone loved it so much, that they released it online before release... yes, it was the only track which was leaked from On Your Radar. We all wanted it as a single, the girls still perform it at recent shows, including those they done in America... why? Because it's awesome. From the masterminds that brought you "All Fired Up" and "What Are You Waiting For?" as well as hits from Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Alesha Dixon, Amelia Lily and many more; "Xenomania", it seems hard to imagine the track would not have performed well, with it's insanely catchy melody, saucy, fun lyrics and dancefloor appeal.

Well I wouldn't say unpopular, maybe by you, but these results were based off the votes of 26 people. laugh.gif

...

Well you guessed it! The number 1 picked by YOU is....

1. "808 (feat Angel Haze?)" from The Finest Selection

We guess this was originally intended to be the lead single from their Greatest Hits collection. It was dubbed What About Us 2.0, With a remix feauturing Angel Haze also being recorded. We can't help but sigh in disatisfaction, at the thought that somebody at the label said "That What Are You Waiting For track, is surely going to do a lot better than that; sassy, slutdropable, sexy, catchy, R&B tune that the girls recorded with up and coming star Angel Haze." Then everyone just agreed? We atleast wished it would have been the follow up release to said track which got released. But no. For me a definate highlight from their "Greatest Hits tour", with it's great choreography and chant along lyrics. This truly was the one that got away.
CHART PREDICTION: Top 5 as lead single with Angel Haze, Top 15 as follow up single?

No one said that? The forum loves it because it sounds like WAU 2.0 AKA a smash hit waiting for happen. It's a travesty that they chose to release a cheap, generic and faceless song as the single from 'Finest Selection', when there are two far more interesting songs with a bit of personality sitting on the album.

I love it but it's far from the best thing they recorded, I think the reason it's won this thing, is because everyone was a bit suprised that they chose to release WAYWF instead.

Posted by: Joe. 1st February 2015, 04:05 PM

I like 808 but there are far better songs on that countdown.

LEAVE A LIGHT ON IS SO UNDERRATED.

Tbh 'What Are You Waiting For' is such a moment when it euphorically goes into 'What Are You Waiting For' Una flips her hair and the song just gets better

Posted by: Joe. 1st February 2015, 04:17 PM

Yeah WAYWF is of equal quality to 808 in my opinion - it's not bad. Nothing the Saturdays released at that point would have done any better than WAYWF.

That's the only good bit of the song. The rest is awful.

Posted by: Wall-e 1st February 2015, 04:22 PM

if '808' was released it wouldn't have done much better than 'What Are You Waiting For' and the comments would have been reversed... WHY WAS WAYWF not released?

Posted by: Sean. 1st February 2015, 04:24 PM

Poor Walking Through The Desert </3

Posted by: Scherz 1st February 2015, 04:42 PM

808 would have been a better single, purely because they didn't have the same energy as 'WAYWF' has in the performances.
Plus, the Angel Haze feature would have turned a few more heads. It may not have been played on radio, but there'd have been a bigger buzz just because it was a feature. It's also catchier and not as annoying.
I loved the 'What are you waiting for, what are are you waiting for' chant at first but now it grates on me.
I'm confident they'd have performed better (both live and in the charts) if 808 had been the single.

Posted by: Juliano 1st February 2015, 06:07 PM

WAYWF is far from a bad single in my opinion, it's a great summer tune... it's energetic, euphoric and fun, but I can tell that 808 has more appeal, maybe 808 should have been released first and then WAYWF second, then if the campaign was successful, they could have even released WTTD.

Posted by: JSG 1st February 2015, 06:15 PM

I gotta say that WAYWF is a fantastic track imo. Like Juliano said it's energetic and i feels it's slightly euphoric. it's not a bad song by any means! It fits right in with their discography for the last couple of years.

Posted by: P@ul 7th April 2015, 08:09 PM

What's with this forum's love of One Shot? It's basic and nowhere near as good as Ego or Forever Is Over..
Definitely agree with most, White Lies,Faster & Get Ready Get Set>> Notorious.
Wildfire> All of Living For The Weekend (maybe on par with Not Giving Up)
808 is better than "What Are You Waiting For"? But top 5?? laugh.gif
