Why do girl bands struggle to do well? The biggest girl band EVER has low sales worldwide or in the UK compared to other types of acts.

(Let's bear in mind that article is from November 2012)

I don't think these sales could be described as "nothing special" given the acts listed above them released many more singles than the Spice Girls did. Spice Girls sold 8 million physical/download singles, with just 11 singles. Making them the 7th best selling singles act of all time, up to that point? That's huge!

As for other girl groups, a few major ones were releasing in the 2000s, when the singles market wasn't very strong. Before streaming, Atomic Kitten had sold around 3 million singles in total, Sugababes had exceeded 4 million sales, Girls Aloud had also sold over 4 million. The Saturdays were releasing during the strongest time for downloads (early 2010s) and possibly sold around 3.5m singles in total.

Streaming has changed everything. Little Mix have sold over 10 million singles in the UK, but a few million will be the accumulation of streaming units. The above list would certainly look very different nowadays.

Little Mix are releasing in a completely different era and market - it'd be quite impossible to compare the two groups purely based on their sales. It's not as black and white as "Little Mix have sold 10 million primarily with downloads/streaming, Spice Girls have sold 8 million primarily with physicals, therefore Little Mix are bigger".

To be fair apart from Oasis, Westlife and the Black Eyed Peas (how did THEY make it up there???) they're also the most recent band on that list. No-one is selling that much anymore unless they have several huge hits like BEP (I'm guessing, Where Is The Love and I Gotta Feeling make up the bulk of those sales).

What recent pop bands have multiple massive hits? Little Mix: Black Magic and Shout Out to My Ex. (Maybe Touch) One Direction: What Makes You Beautiful and maybe two more at a push. Can't think of that many more off the top of my head and indie/rock have been locked out of the charts for like five years now.

I think the modern day streaming sales are offensive to actual million sellers from the 90s,80s etc...

I see that LM have 3 million sellers, where as Spice Girls technically have 2, but most of their million seller have sold between 500-600k in pure sales.

I think acts like Ed Sheeran who have multi million selling songs when a large amount of them are streams has really ruined the history of the charts and the way the singles charts are now.

Actually when you look at the ones above them, apart from the Beatles, they have a much better ratio of sales to single. The Beatles one is astonishing at over 1 million for 22 singles released. After them Spice Girls are easily the biggest seller in ratio of releases to sales. They have 727,000 for 8 million over 11 singles while the Rolling Stones only have 171,000 ratio of sales to 59 releases and Take That and Queens ratio is in the 200,000 mark.

1. Beatles [22.1 million over 22 singles - working out over 1 million per single wow]
2. Queen [12.8 million over 54 singles - working out approx 237,000 per single]
3. Abba [11.3 million over 25 UK singles - working out approx 452,000 per single]
4. Rolling Stones [10.1 million over 59 UK singles - working out approx 171,000 per single]
5. Oasis [9.1 million over 28 UK singles - working over approx 325,000 per single]
6. Take That [9.1 million over 35 UK singles working out approx 260,000 per single]
7. Spice Girls [8.0 million over 11 UK singles working out approx 727,000 per single]

Spice Girls were remarkable sellers for their short 2 year active period!

If the Spice Girls had had another album with Geri followed by FOREVER, they would have had more #1s and probably sold 10-12m in the UK easily.

Obviously we have no way of truly knowing what their sales would have been like in 1998-99 had they continued as they were. However Goodbye's sales is a good indication that they would have continued on the same track as they were on with singles selling between 400-1 million. I think 10-12 million is very likely too. Such a shame they wasted it all on solo ambitions and egos.

Although I'm not sure if Stop did a LOT worse because they were becoming less popular, or because people didn't like Stop.

Stop was still a good seller in comparison to other hit singles of the day. It simply paled in comparison to the rest of their discography which was intense sales. It has sold 420,000 which is a Gold record at the end of the day. Stop was simply a victim of being released in the same week as a huge million selling single which took most of the public's attention. If you think as a teenager generally you only had money for 1 single a week (that was me anyway) so most were choosing the million selling mega hit. You also have to consider that it was the 3rd single from a huge million selling album too, and actually Viva Forever was probably propelled by it being Geri's last single and the girls as a four piece getting support and attention that Stop didn't get...

I feel like your opinion of Little Mix is a bit warped. Regardless of weather you think they ‘suck’ they’re one of the biggest acts in the Uk now, let alone girl group.

The Beatles one is astonishing at over 1 million for 22 singles released.

While it's true that they officially had 22 main singles released while they were active, they had a few other singles released too, and then a lot of re-issues. Also it's worth noting that as of 2010, their back catalogue was released digitally - so some of their classic songs that weren't singles started to sell, which also contributes towards the overall total of 22 million sales as of 2012. (Technically speaking, the 8 million sales by the Spice Girls would have included some sales of their album tracks/B Sides, but presumably these would have been very minimal amounts).

Not that I'm trying to downplay The Beatles' obviously phenomenal success by any means! They're still by far the best selling band by a distance, but their average sales per single isn't 1 million each.

Nevertheless, their six million sellers (sales as of 2012) sold a highly impressive 9.06m between them! Then there's another 26 singles + various back catalogue titles that have an additional 13 million sales between them.

1.90m - She Loves You
1.77m - I Want to Hold Your Hand
1.53m - Can't Buy Me Love
1.41m - I Feel Fine
1.39m - We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper
1.06m - Hey Jude

Also, in 2015 OCC published a list of best selling Beatles songs: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/t...evealed__10575/ which shows that they count other titles beyond the 22 main singles. Interestingly the digital release of Here Comes the Sun, which only peaked at #58 in 2010, had outsold the #4 peaking single Real Love from 1996.
