I couldn't find another thread on this but forgive me if I am duplicating.

In 1987 for Radio 1's 20th anniversary they counted down the top 100 best selling singles and albums from the last 20 years (since Radio 1 had begun). After this you could send off a stamped addressed envelope and be sent the charts by post. Luckily I am a bit of a hoarder and in a recent house move I found these charts, would anyone be interested in me posting them? To be clear they are the Top 100 selling singles and 100 albums during the period Sept 1967- Sept 1987.

On a related note I taped the last bit of the countdown on the Bruno Brookes show (the whole BB show not just the bit where he did the countdown), which was the top 16 albums and singles - and I still have the recording on cassette but with no means of playing it!

' Making Your Mind Up' is very high in this list compared with how it ended up in the 1980s decade end chart. On the decade end the titles at numbers 42, 44 and 50 in the above chart appear at numbers 12, 14 and 16 respectively. However 'Making Your Mind Up' is at number 47 on the decade end chart. On the other hand, 'The Land Of Make Believe', at number 89 on this Radio 1 chart is at number 41 on the decade end chart.

What makes it more confusing is that the Radio 1 Anniversary chart in 1987 and the Gallup 1980s Decade End chart were both compiled by Alan Jones.

Good old Alan! Also it seems to indicate that MYMU was the third best seller of 81 behind Adam & The Ants and Soft Cell which doesn't tally with BMRB

All that's happened here is a straight chart panel sales sweep (without any multiplier or the same one 20 probably) combined with those "dreaded" everchanging shipment figures (which tend to add and lose 100,000 sales, without any continuity). I might check some of this. The Bucks Fizz titles are the wrong way around as in the NME Book. No missed week sales have been included, hence a John Lennon song is missing.

Had a look at it & the questions we need to ask are where are Under The Moon Of Love, Mississippi, Uptown Girl, Super Trouper, Woman In Love, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, If You Leave Me Now, Do You Really Want To Hurt Me, Vienna, One Day In Your Life, The Birdie Song, How Deep Is Your Love & Shaddup You Face?

They lose Save Your Love, You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me, When A Child Is Born, You Can't Hurry Love, The Tide Is High, Starting Over, D.I.S.C.O. & My Coo Ca Choo due to the Christmas & New Year missed chart weeks. So the top 100 is really top 121. Fernando (at 100 here) is 695,000 in sales (I think). The next ones would be Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now (if 1987 has been included), Lily The Pink, Let's Dance, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Freedom & True.

1967 - 72 is shipment based, with wrong multipliers for 1973 & 1975 (Stylistics on 700,000. Panel sales to 17 make it 550,000. So possibly shipments again). This beggars the question of Rod Stewart's shipments for "Sailing" in 1975. Shipped 700,000 in 75 & another 400,000 in 1976, but apparently only 955,000 in this list. 1976 (itself) seems to have lost a lot of records. 1977-79 is shipment based.
1980 - 82 is very shipment based.
1983 is to the Gallup stuff 17 multiplier (apart from missing Uptown Girl)
1984 is shipment based
1985 & 86 are an 18 multiplier
1987 may not be included at all

It has to be pointed out that 1980 had a mistake in the year end BMRB Top 100. They got a panel figure wrong on Starting Over. It was placed at #10 in the year end list, but shoud really of been #17. Various lists have it wrong including lists by a couple of other people on UKMix & other sites.

I think this was the final 20 on this Radio One 20th Anniversary:
20 Imagine
19 Last Waltz
18 Heart Of Glass
17 Bohemion Rhapsody
16 Power Of Love
15 YMCA
14 Save Your Kisses For Me
13 Careless Whisper
12 Karma Chameleon
11 Last Xmas
10 Don't You Want Me
9 Summer Nights
8 I Just Called To Say I Love You
7 Two Tribes
6 Relax
5 Mary's Boy Child-Oh My Lord
4 You're The One That I Want
3 Rivers Of Babylon
2 Mull Of Kintyre
1 Band Aid

Just to point out that the 20th anniversary chart was part of a re-launch of Radio 1 which would begin broadcasting in stereo the next day, and broadcasting the 'correct' week's chart on the Sunday for the first time as well. As Radio 1 began broadcasting on 30 September 1967 this chart was (presumably) broadcast on Wednesday 30 September 1987. That means the chart broadcast on Sunday 4 October 1987 would have been the chart week ending Saturday 10 October 1987 (MARRS - Pump up the volume was at its second week at number 1). I wonder if the top 40 for w/e 3 October 1987 was ever broadcast therefore? Prior to this the singles chart had been released on a Tuesday not on a Sunday.

The singles chart for w/e 3 October 1987 was announced on Radio 1 on the usual Tuesday date, in this case Tuesday 29 September 1987, but it was never counted down on the subsequent Sunday top 40 - the Sunday chart on 4 October 1987 was the new chart, as you have posted, dated 10 October 1987. Effectively the Sunday Top 40 skipped a week and as a result never played the first week of M/A/R/R/S being at number 1.

It was one of only two top 40 charts (outside of Christmas / New Year) that never got to be played on Radio 1 on the Sunday, the other being the chart compiled on the day Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997. The latter broadcast was cancelled due to the death of Diana.

The top 26 in the Singles list are acknowledged as being million sellers, though some are million sellers on shipments rather than over the counter sales. 'Don't You Want Me' is possibly one of the most contentious as it never sold anywhere near as its sales in this list - and the list of the 1980s best sellers - suggest it sold. It was a million selling single though but I doubt it was the 10th best seller in the two decades covered by this chart. 'Heart Of Glass' sold a million on shipments but most likely sold about 830,000 on over the counter sales.

The most controversial single in terms of sales in this chart is 'Mary's Boy Child' by Boney M which is always listed as selling about 1.8m yet its weekly sales in late 1978 / early 1979 never add up to more than 1.3m - again it must be on these lists based on shipments.
