For 'Music' Madonna stripped things back a bit from the aesthetics of the previous era and brought us a mix of fun, drama and western flair. We had the US flag, Ali-G and a strip club, a western converyor belt and crime in a car. Which of the music videos released in this iconic era is your favourite? Feel free to also rank the music videos below: American Pie Music Don't Tell Me What It Feels Like For A Girl Favourite 'Ray of Light' era music video Favourite 'Bedtime Stories' era music video Favourite 'Erotica' era music video Favourite 'Like A Prayer' era music video Favourite 'True Blue' era music video Favourite 'Like A Virgin' era music video Favourite 'Madonna' era music video |

Don't Tell Me. Just rewatched it. I forgot how much I like that one. The choreography and energy is so great here. It's a gorgeous video. I love how the video mixes the country elements with technology...in a similar way to how the song mixes old and new sounds. Amazing it's from nearly 20 years ago. The video could be released tomorrow and still work.
I've also always liked the boldness of the What It Feels Like For a Girl video...but the mix of the song doesn't work for me. It's just...not much of a song in that version. I've always wondered if a different edit of the video could work with the album version of the song. The song is so haunting. I think it's a bit of a shame it never quite got its due. I *think* the mix of the gentle song with the violent visuals would be rather striking. |

What It Feels Like For A Girl is a fantastic video, one of her best. Shame about the song.

I'm finding this very tough between Don't Tell Me and What If Feels Like For A Girl. The former is so simple but so effective - it's a great watch to see her stripped back and just commanding the song. The latter is such a fun, high-octane song and I love the concept and dynamic between the two ladies.
I think i'll go for Don't Tell Me because it proves how less can sometimes be more. On paper, it shouldn't be entertaining, but it just is because of her star power. |

1) Don't Tell Me
2) Music 3) What It Feels Like for a Girl 4) American Pie As mentioned already, the simplicity of 'Don't Tell Me' is really effective. On paper, everything is quite plain - Madonna's casual walking on the treadmill, her ordinary clothes, the uneventful backdrop - but it just feels right. It's very relaxed and easy which suits the tone of the song. There's also something very endearing about Madonna music videos that strip it all back and the supposedly basic elements manage to shine. I like how the choreography is set to the jolty guitar riff too; that brings some subtle entertainment value to the video. 'Music' is great fun, I like the parody nature of the video and how they worked around Madonna's pregnancy. 'What It Feels Like for a Girl' feels very overlooked considering the controversy; another great concept again and like Piers said, I think it would be interesting to have seen the video built around the album version. Madonna's boobs are the star of the 'American Pie' video. |
