Welcome new thread!

For those who are reading for the first time. This is the place where we discuss everything Radio 1 including the Tune Of The Week by each daytime DJ, (Although since the change from Track Of The Day to Tune Of The Week, discussion has dried up a bit.) any major schedule changes and Radio 1 events. Note that due to the way NYD has fallen this year, the top 5 in the BBC Sound Of 2018 won't be announced until next week.

I gave up on posting Best New Pop and the Hottest Records halfway through last year but hopefully I can get back on track with these this year.

For those who are interested, Here we have the 50 most played tracks of 2017 on BBC Radio 1. (Well 56, if you include the bubbling under bit, but the main chart is the top 50) Please note all of this information is from the BBC Radio 1 Last.fm page and includes tracks that have been played during the daytime and nighttime so the information here may be slightly inaccurate and differ from the official BBC information which hasn't been announced, except for the Disciples track being number 1 which reflects the Last.fm data. Nope it didn't. They're funny with these sort of songs. Just look at Midnight City for example.

Posted by: Dappy New Year Jan 1 2018, 06:31 PM

Slay at 'Trouble' being the 17th most played song of 2017 despite its Q3 2016 release date.

Posted by: Klaus Jan 1 2018, 06:48 PM

It was nice when Indie tracks were high amongst the most played, ah well.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 1 2018, 07:02 PM

wow surprised it isn't shape of you at #1
and that dance music is doing so well
also suprised at green light

It wasn't even on the playlist in 2017 as well and even when it got A-Listed in 2016 it wasn't really on that long. Places being 4th on the most played in 2017 shows that Radio 1 can still give lot's of spot plays to tracks that failed to make the A-List.

Posted by: TMD_24Quavo Jan 1 2018, 07:32 PM

Aaand here we go...

Hottest Record 1/1/18: Dream Wife - Hey Heartbreaker

Posted by: gavindeejay Jan 1 2018, 10:26 PM

I wouldn’t mind betting ‘Places’ has been played on nearly every dance show in 2017 which would of helped it get so high! Add that to its time on the playlist, Recurrent plays and any ROTW support from the presenters. It makes it even more strange that Radio 1 snubbed the follow up ‘All Stars’. Plus it features Alma, who they love! Their support for Martin Solveig has never really been consistent. They playlist one of his tracks which turns into a hit from him, then snub or only C List the follow ups. ‘Intoxicated’ to ‘+1’ was another example!

Posted by: Brébino Jan 1 2018, 10:40 PM

Green Light in the top 10 <3

Not at all surprised at Disciples being #1, must have been spammed during both daytime and nighttime!

This!!! I'm still not over All Stars getting completely snubbed, it seems the exact sort of thing R1 would jump onto ffs

Anne-Marie - Low down in the charts so hopefully this being playlisted will vault this up
Steel Bangerz - This looks like being a big hit soon
Rae Morris - Radio 1 seem to be supporting her strongly this era so wouldn’t be surprised to see her next single being supported

Changes ahead to the weekend schedule from the end of next month!

QUOTE
There’s a bunch of new regular and guests presenters lined-up for BBC Radio 1 starting at the end of February.

New signings Maya Jama and Jordan North are joining the station to host weekly shows, and celebrities including Scarlett Moffatt and Mollie King becoming Radio 1 DJs to present alongside Matt Edmondson.

Maya Jama will join Radio 1 to host Radio 1’s Greatest Hits on Saturdays (10am-1pm), and will also co-host with Scott Mills and Chris Stark Fridays, 1-4pm. Hailing from Bristol, 23 year-old Maya landed her first TV job in 2014, presenting MTVbase show ‘TheWrapUp’. She has since hosted a string of other music TV shows across MTV, 4Music, Channel 4, ITV and Sky Arts. She has presented a radio show on Rinse FM, and recently hosted the red carpet for The BRITs 2018 Nominations Show.

Maya says: “I’m so happy to be presenting alongside Scott Mills on Fridays. I’m sure I can learn a thing or two from him and beyond excited to have my own show on Radio 1 every Saturday, I cannot wait to start!”

Jordan North will host Radio 1’s Greatest Hits on Sundays (10am-1pm). Jordan began his radio career presenting on student and community stations like Preston FM and Spark FM and has also hosted shows on the likes of Rock FM, The Hits and Capital Manchester.

Jordan says: “What a great start to my 2018 – I’m absolutely made up! It’s no secret that this has been a childhood ambition of mine, so to get my own show on Radio 1 and officially be part of the family is just amazing. To be honest, it’s not properly sunk in, but I can’t wait to be back on air and start presenting Radio 1’s Greatest Hits.”

Matt Edmondson will become the new host of the weekend 1-4pm show, and on Saturdays he will be joined by a monthly celebrity co-host with the likes of Scarlett Moffatt and Mollie King.

Matt Edmondson says: “I am ridiculously excited about inviting some big name co-presenters to join me on Radio 1 every Saturday. I can’t wait to work with Mollie and Scarlett, not to mention the ‘reveal-them-and-you’ll-be-immediately-fired’ list of amazing names we have lined up for the rest of 2018.”

Scarlett Moffatt says: “I’ve always loved listening to Matt on Radio 1 so to present alongside him is going to be so much fun.”

Mollie King says: “I’m so excited to be co-hosting BBC Radio 1’s brand new Saturday show with Matt Edmondson. He always has me in stitches; we’re going to have a blast, bring it on!”

Following multiple stints as a presenting duo in 2017, Dev and Alice Levine will officially join forces to co-host Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast show (weekends, 6-10am). Celebrity MasterChef finalist Dev, and Alice who is about to embark on a world comedy tour, will be waking up listeners from 17th March.

Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper says: “It’s brilliant to welcome the next generation of superstars to Radio 1. Along with Maya, Jordan, Dev and Alice all starting new shows, Matt will co-present with the likes of Scarlett and Mollie, giving an exciting jeopardy to live radio at the weekend.”

Radio 1’s new weekend schedule from 24/2/18 is:

Saturdays

6am-10am – Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast with Dev and Alice

10am-1pm Saturdays – Radio 1’s Greatest Hits with Maya Jama

1pm-4pm Saturdays – Matt Edmondson and a celebrity co-host

4pm-7pm Saturdays – Radio 1’s Dance Anthems with MistaJam

Sundays

6am-10am – Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast with Dev and Alice

10am-1pm – Radio 1’s Greatest Hits with Jordan North

1pm-4pm Sundays – Matt Edmondson

4pm-7pm Sundays – Radio 1’s Life Hacks with Cel Spellman and Katie Thistleton

It's been 10 years but now BBC Radio 1 is bringing back comedy to its schedules as originally announced back in September last year with its nightime schedule changes. The comedy shows will launch via on-demand on February 5th but will also air on the station in the 3am-4am slot on a Wednesday for Series 1 (from February 7th), Thursday for Series 2 (from February 22nd) and a Friday for Series 3 (from March 30th).

Details of all the shows can be found http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2018/radio-1-comedy.

Radio 1’s announced Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift for its live music event in Swansea at the end of May, as part of BBC Music’s The Biggest Weekend.

The usual Radio 1 Big Weekend has been expanded for this year only, with Radio 2, Radio 3 and BBC 6 Music also putting on events – in Coventry, Perth and Belfast.

Other acts also confirmed this morning include Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Snow Patrol, Beck, Billy Ocean, Manic Street Preachers and more.

The events will be charged for this year, with tickets £18 plus a £4.50 booking fee when they go on sale next month. The BBC’s making 175,000 tickets available, with a percentage available to local residents in each of the four areas.

Bob Shennan, Director BBC Radio and Music, says: “The Biggest Weekend is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime festival for everyone that loves music, whether they are at the venues in person or enjoying the whole spectacle of performances being streamed through iPlayer along with all our TV, radio and digital networks. Wherever you are in the country, you will be part of the biggest music event, with the widest selection of musical genres, the BBC has ever put on.”

In Singleton Park, Swansea, Radio 1 teams up with 1Xtra and the Asian Network for performances on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May. Radio 3 and Radio 2 work together to put on acts in Scone Palace, Perth on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th, as well as in War Memorial Park, Coventry on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th (Bank Holiday). On the Friday and Saturday there’ll be performances at Titanic Slipways in Belfast under the BBC 6 Music banner.

Announcements were made on air this morning by each of the stations’ breakfast presenters.

Nick Grimshaw said: “You know it’s the start of the summer when we put on a massive festival, and we’re bringing two of the biggest artists in the world to Swansea. Taylor and Ed plus a whole massive line-up to be announced make The Biggest Weekend THE event of the year.”

Chris Evans said: “The Biggest Weekend is shaping up very nicely indeed. Can’t wait to find out who else is going to be performing.”

Petroc Trelawny, BBC Radio 3’s breakfast presenter, says: “There’s magic in all kinds of music, from pop to rock, jazz to folk and of course, classical. I’m really looking forward to The Biggest Weekend and the unique and brilliant content of four BBC radio stations coming together – it’s thrilling to see collaboration like this on such a grand scale. With Nigel Kennedy and Eliza McCarthy at the helm of the Radio 3 offering, I’m convinced the festival will be a treat for existing and new audiences alike. I can’t wait to hear who else will be joining us on stage in Perth and Coventry in May.”

Shaun Keaveny, BBC Radio 6 Music’s breakfast presenter, says: “I am a Belfast virgin, so am absolutely chomping at the bit to immerse myself in the culture of one of Britain’s great cities when BBC Radio 6 Music visits for the first time for BBC Music’s Biggest Weekend. 6 Music will be bringing a superlative line up of artists – with Beck, Manic Street Preachers, Courtney Barnett and Public Service Broadcasting announced today and more to come.”

They did the same with Katy Perry last year and kept 'Bon Appetite' on the A List forever when it was quite clearly flopping!

I'm happy they're holding it just down the road from my house, so will be trying my best to get tickets!

Here is the 15 most played tracks on Radio 1 throughout January. I will hopefully do this for each month with a mid-year update covering January-June at the beginning of July. All the data comes from Last FM and records songs from daytime and nighttime. The data may be slightly incorrect due to possible failed scrobbles but hopefully this will give you a good idea of how much the tracks were played.

Most Played January 2018
1. Eminem - River (feat. Ed Sheeran) (100) [Added To A-List]
2. Jason Derulo - Tip Toe (feat. French Montana) (99)
3. James Arthur - Naked (98)
4. RAYE & Mr. Eazi - Decline (96)
5. Jax Jones - Breathe (feat. Ina Wroldsen) (95)
6. MK - 17 (93)
7. Tom Walker - Leave A Light On (90)
8. Sigrid - Strangers (90)
9. Craig David - I Know You (feat. Bastille) (89)
10. J Hus - Bouff Daddy (88)
11. Ramz - Barking (86)
12. Taylor Swift - Gorgeous (80)
13. Camila Cabello - Never Be The Same (77)
14. Bruno Mars - Finesse (Remix) (feat. Cardi B) (76)
15. Clean Bandit - I Miss You (feat. Julia Michaels) (64) [Insta-Added To C-List]

Intresting to note was that the most played track for January 2018 was played 15 times less than last year's January most played.

Posted by: Bré Feb 17 2018, 04:50 PM

Strange that they keep skipping 'Bouff Daddy' on the chart show when it's otherwise spammed by them.

Posted by: lewistgreen Mar 4 2018, 02:40 PM

Since the change last weekend to the Greatest Hits show, with Maya and Jordan taking over, I'm going to try and keep a playlist updated of all the tracks played because there are some absolute classic bangers coming out of that show!

Clara Amfo
Khalid & Normani - Love Lies

Scott Mills
Noah Cyrus - We Are... (feat. MØ)

Greg James
Virtual Self - Ghost Voices

Annie Mac
Jon Hopkins - Emerald Rush

Huw Stephens
Boy Azooga - Loner Boogie

P.S. GREG THAMES MY HERO *.*

(and the new Jon Hopkins track is really good too)

Jordan North (who is in for Adele Roberts)'s tune of the week is Blossoms - I Can't Stand it btw

Love the Annie Mac one!

Posted by: Cqmerqn Mar 16 2018, 07:28 AM

I was kinda hoping for an insta add for Louisa :/

Niall Horan playlisted

Posted by: 34yopoppicker Mar 16 2018, 08:02 AM

And Muse live to fight another Radio 1 day!

"The door remains open to Muse but we'll have to think carefully about their next album" George Ergatoudis, 2013.

Still, he's gone now. Would have been ridiculous playing Foo Fighters but snubbing Muse.

Also, Janelle Monae - which would have been another stupid omission.

http://www.nme.com/news/music/bbc-radio-1-ordered-to-play-more-new-music-2274379

Radio 1 daytime must play 'at least 50% new music, including a significant proportion from new and emerging UK artists.' It comes into force on April 1st.

I wonder if this will impact the charts going forward?

Posted by: The Hissmobile Mar 27 2018, 04:25 PM

This sounds like excellent news! biggrin.gif

Hopefully, this will mean more new artists breaking through on the chart!

Hopefully more dance music that only usually gets dance anthems play will be daytime playlisted too.

Posted by: T Boy Mar 27 2018, 04:28 PM

Don’t they already do this?

Posted by: Cqmerqn Mar 27 2018, 04:42 PM

Good!

Even if they just playlist new songs quicker!

Posted by: gavindeejay Mar 27 2018, 04:50 PM

I think they do this already. There are plenty of up and coming acts as well as new music from established artists in their day to day playlist. Even though stuff like Portugal. The Man has been on the playlist for ages, the majority of the audience will still think of it as 'new' even though its old to us tongue.gif

Posted by: danG Mar 27 2018, 05:14 PM

is this not old news? Radio 1 play at least 50% new British music anyway, I'd have thought.

Anyway...

Ofcom has also considered the effects of streaming, which means that Radio 1 playlists could feature greater additions from “new music” defined by a period of 12 months from its first release or instead six weeks from the date it first enters the Top 20.

so new music doesn't necessarily mean it was released just last week.

It’s just been announced Nick Grimshaw is to leave the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in September

Nothing on the BBC website as yet, but This was posted on the Radio 1 Twitter

“It was always my dream to do the breakfast show and I’m very grateful that I got to live my dream every day for what will be nearly 6 years. But 6 years is a long time and this isn’t a forever job. I had the time of my life"

We love you Grimmy ❤️

Edit:- Now on the Newsbeat site. Grimmy will be replaced by Gregg James with Grimmy going to drive so it’s basically a swap.

I don't expect Greg James to be that much different tbh. I am surprised Grimshaw lasted this long really!

Having a look back at the Greatest Indie Hits Mix, (Scott Mills said it) it appears it is exacly the same mix as the Festival Anthems Vol 1 Mix last year.

Poor stuff from Radio 1. Hopefully we do get new mixes as well but why waste time playing mixes from last year and making it sound like it's new mixes by renaming them.

Yeah, that is odd. They haven't actually announced an album for this year yet so they may not even be making them anymore? It'd be a shame though as often they include performances that aren't available on their YouTube channels.

I just checked and they announced the 2017 volume on 14th October with a 17th November release date last year so there's still a week or so for them to make an annoucement.

The line up has been announced and it will indeed be in November, every day between Monday and Thursday:

Thursday November 1: Twenty One Pilots
Monday November 5: Dizzee Rascal
Tuesday November 6: Marshmello and Bastille
Wednesday November 7: Robyn
Thursday November 8: Hozier
Monday November 12: Zara Larsson
Tuesday November 13: Jess Glynne
Wednesday November 14: Lewis Capaldi
Thursday November 15: Blossoms
Monday November 19: Rita Ora
Tuesday November 20: Jax Jones
Wednesday November 21: Christine and the Queens
Thursday November 22: George Ezra
Monday November 26: The 1975
Tuesday November 27: Rudimental and Tom Walker
Wednesday November 28: Ellie Goulding
Thursday November 29: Mumford and Sons – Live Lounge Symphony

Only 6 out of 17 female artists is a bit disappointing - they could have easily gotten Dua Lipa, Anne-Marie (as much as I dislike her), Stefflon Don, Mabel, Jorja Smith... literally any number of current UK females to make the line up more equal.

Posted by: gavindeejay Oct 9 2018, 01:21 PM

In some cases it even works/makes sense - Tom Grennan, for example, entered the T100 with the re-released 'FWIBLF' for the first time.

14. Jorja Smith - Blue Lights
15. Mabel - Fix You (cover of Coldplay song)
16. London Grammar - Hell to the Liars

Released 23rd November.

I really don't like them putting all of the covers on one disc, I prefer the albums when you hear a mix of originals and covers. I really don't think some of these artists warrant appearing on here twice, Rag'n'Bone Man for one sticks out like a sore thumb having had zero commercial success this year.

for selfish reasons I'm annoyed they're doing it on a Friday (as I'll have to miss the last 2 hours to work), but oh well, it makes sense because the weekly chart will be full of Christmas songs and they'd have barely anything to play otherwise.

can definitely see most of the musical numbers being skipped alongside maybe some of the leftovers from last year.

Your right I meant Top 50. Though most of the songs they play are edited down to about 2 and a half minutes plus if they skip a few they could probably do it laugh.gif

Posted by: coi Nov 22 2018, 08:03 PM

On the plus side, last year they did at least play the full top 40. If they can keep that again this year that would be nice, but they will be skipping a lot of 41-100 if so.

Rickie, Melvin and Charlie to leave Kiss Breakfast and join Radio 1

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-46344373

QUOTE
DJs Rickie, Melvin and Charlie will take over from Charlie Sloth to host the late evening show on Radio 1, the BBC has confirmed.

The trio, who currently present the breakfast show on Kiss, will begin hosting the 9-11pm show in 2019.

Sloth left the station last month, just one year after he began hosting the show - which was titled The 8th.

In a statement, Rickie, Melvin and Charlie said they were "so excited to be joining the Radio 1 family".

The trio, whose full names are Rickie Haywood Williams, Melvin Odoom and Charlie Hedges, added the new show would be an opportunity for listeners to "hear a new side to us as we get to showcase the music we love".

Andy Roberts, group programme director at Kiss, said the trio "have had a record-breaking 10 years on Kiss Breakfast, claiming the crown as both the biggest breakfast show in London and commercial breakfast show across the UK.

"All at Kiss wish them the very best of luck for the future. We'll be announcing exciting plans for Kiss Breakfast very soon."

The former host of the late evening slot, Charlie Sloth, left Radio 1 under a cloud.

It's highly unusual for a DJ to leave a slot they've been in for less than a year - especially when a radio show format has been specifically created and developed for them by the station.

But, in October, after just a year presenting The 8th, Sloth announced he'd be leaving to "seek a new challenge".

He was due to continue presenting the show until the beginning of November, but had to leave the station early after a controversy involving Edith Bowman and an awards ceremony.

When Bowman beat him in the best specialist music show category at the Audio & Radio Industry Awards (Arias), Sloth attempted his own "Kanye moment".

He took to the stage and, in strong language, suggested that he was a far more relevant presenter, because his mum listens to Edith Bowman.

Sloth later apologised publicly to Bowman, and tweeted that the stage invasion was "supposed to be a bit of bants".

The 37-year-old presenter had spent more than a decade hosting various shows on Radio 1 and 1Xtra, and he has not yet announced what his new projects will be.

Dev took over presenting The 8th while the station searched for new presenters - a schedule change which was at least partially responsible for a jiggle of Radio 1's weekend schedule.

Return to BBC
Radio 1's poaching of Rickie, Melvin and Charlie back into the BBC stable is significant in the wider radio industry.

Ben Cooper, who is the controller of Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network, has previously acknowledged it's been more difficult in recent years for Radio 1 to develop younger talent.

This is a result of there being fewer youth-focused TV shows such as T4, Top of the Pops and CD:UK from which to poach presenters.

Instead, the station has more recently focused on hiring voices from student radio, such as current breakfast host Greg James.

It was far more common in the 1990s for Radio 1 to poach from commercial radio - Scott Mills and Chris Moyles were both brought over from their respective commercial shows.

However, although Rickie and Melvin made their name at Kiss and are considered commercial figures, they actually began their radio careers at BBC 1Xtra more than a decade ago.

Work experience led to a contract producing shows, before the pair began presenting weekend breakfast as a double act.

Since then, they have kept up a relationship with the BBC, appearing as regular panellists on BBC Three's Sweat The Small Stuff, fronted by Nick Grimshaw.

Melvin was also a contestant in the 2016 series of Strictly Come Dancing - but was voted out first.

The pair have presented for ITV2, Channel 4 and MTV, and have previously hosted the Mobo awards.

When they joined Kiss, they were put together with Charlie Hedges, who started her music career DJing at international events and festivals such as Ministry of Sound, Global Gathering, V Festival and Space Ibiza.

Ben Cooper, controller of Radio 1 & 1Xtra said: "Radio 1 needs to keep disrupting, keep changing, keep surprising our audiences and our industry.

"Can't wait to tune in to hear Rickie, Melvin and Charlie on Radio 1 with an exciting mix of late night humour and great new music."

Not long since 38 was the age DJs left Radio 1 rather than joined it. A welcome move - older listeners and presenters should be welcomed if they are heavily invested in the most exciting new music and sound/feel young. I keep wondering if I should go to Radio 2, then I look at the tracklist for your average daytime show and there is far too much of what I would call 60/70s wedding anniversary music. And barely any dance/hip-hop. Plus I feel Radio 1 is still speaking to me a lot more than the alternatives. Not heard this trio (think I saw one of them on Sweat the Small Stuff) before but look forward to tuning in.

Jumpsuit would have been my third choice (behind Mantra and Four Out of Five which I'm delighted to see both made the top ten!) so really glad that won! cheer.gif

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Dec 6 2018, 08:23 PM

Jumpsuit is one of the better songs on Trench for me. I really wanted to like it, but so much of it sounds the same, other than a few of the standout tracks.

People like them because they're different. There's absolutely nothing in the chart right now that sounds anything like Give Yourself a Try, Love It If We Made It or It's Not Living.

1. Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still (400+ plays)
2. Au/Ra & CamelPhat - Panic Room
3. George Ezra - Shotgun
4. Calvin Harris & Sam Smith - Promises
5. Jax Jones feat. Ina Wroldsen - Breathe

6. Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes

12. A$AP Rocky feat. Skepta - Praise The Lord (Da Shine)
13. Silk City & Dua Lipa - Electricity
14. Juice WRLD - Lucid Dreams
15. MK - 17

Posted by: gavindeejay Dec 30 2018, 07:26 PM

17 has racked up a good number of plays as a recurrent. Also surprised 'Promises' has been played more than One Kiss.

Posted by: coi Dec 30 2018, 07:32 PM

For anyone wondering, Taste by Tyga and Offset is 16th, Lullaby by Sigala and Paloma Faith 17th, Bad Vibe by M.O 18th, God's Plan by Drake 19th and The Middle by Zedd, Grey and Maren Morris 20th.

Posted by: lewistgreen Dec 30 2018, 07:38 PM

I do wonder what the cut-off date was as their last.fm is a little different. I know it can be off sometimes, but I think Radio 1 have been fairly good with their scrobbling of late.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 30 2018, 08:15 PM

Yes surprised Promises is higher than One Kiss!

Also Panic Room so high considering it charted quite low, brillant track though!

What song has highest plays compared to playlist position?

Posted by: lewistgreen Dec 30 2018, 08:22 PM

I think this is right.

Krystal Klear - Neutron Dance [B List] (186 plays)

DJ Koze - Pick Up [C List] (112 plays)

I guess both benefitted from a lot of night time support.

The Radio 1 last fm has been scrobbling since 2005 and The 1975 are already their 12th most played artist!

Posted by: SLlewellyn Dec 30 2018, 10:19 PM

You sound surprised by that fact heehee.gif

Surprised that Portugal The Man is their most played, “Body”, “17” and “All the Stars” standout as tracks they have played a lot; at least to me.

Jack Back (David Guetta) is covering for Danny Howard on Friday night! Pretty high profile for that... just not sure why he needs to use his alias laugh.gif

Any news on the start date for Rickie, Melvin and Charlie? Poor Dev needs to have a break

I’m pretty sure I saw somewhere that they are going to be starting Mid April! Not sure what’s taking them so long to start but maybe they’re still contracted to Kiss at the moment or they’re on gardening leave.

Maybe they’re just taking an extended break then. They left Kiss the week before Christmas.

Anyone else find they're just using Radio 1 as a guide to find out what's worth adding to their playlists? This has been the case for me since Greg left teatime. I loved that show, it was glorious post-work listening and I just CANNOT get into the breakfast show. Probably because it's a bit less irreverant, there tends to be too much music/hits that I'm sick of and it badly misses Chris Smith. I would love to listen to Mills on an afternoon but it's too distracting from my work. So it just tends to be 15-30 minutes here and there. I have enjoyed the bits of teatime Grimmy I have heard but that time of day is now largely consumed by toddler-related stuff, and I'm also doing family things during Annie Mac and a lot of the weekend. So what I do is just add their daytime playlist to mine then see what's popular with on the specialist shows. I've had Spotify Mobile for many years but it seems to have made actually listening to R1 a bit redundant for me, especially with songs staying on the playlist for way too long. But I still need someone to help me find out which new music is worth bothering with, so they are doing a good job in that respect!

New C List additions if anyone wants to know early

CHVRCHES - Graffiti
Florence + The Machine - Moderation
Friend Within - The Truth
Jorja Smith - Don’t Watch Me Cry
Rudimental feat. RAY BLK & Stefflon Don - Scared Of Love
Vampire Weekend - Harmony Hall

Probably don't need to spoiler tag them as we'll know tomorrow morning anyway. Glad they're not waiting around with Harmony Hall, it's such a tune. Hopefully someone can post the playlist in my absence tomorrow morning.

It's Rajar day! https://forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/2324730/rajar-q4-2018-19/p2

QUOTE
Despite Radio 1’s falling audience, Greg James added 231,000 listeners to his Radio 1 breakfast show in the final quarter of 2018. The number rises to more than 300,000 when adding in listeners aged between 10 and 15. For 15+ audience, Greg’s reach has gone from 4.88m in Q3/18 to 5.111m in Q4/18. But a year ago in Q4/17, Grimmy had 5.722m weekly listeners. Radio 1 says the number of under 25s listening is up 20% since the previous quarter, and that Matt and Mollie on Friday to Sunday breakfast reach 4m a week.

With the exception of the World Service, every single one of the BBC’s national networks saw its audience size drop year on year. When looking at quarterly figures, the only rises are for Radio 4 Extra, the World Service, 1Xtra and Radio 2.

Compared with a year ago, the BBC Asian Network is down 20% (527k reach compared with 661k in Q4/17).

5 live and 5 live Sports Extra combined drop by 10%, losing more than half a million listeners. The main station falls from 5.4m a year ago to 4.9m (its second-lowest ever reach), while the digital-only sports channel drops from 1m to 667k (the lowest it’s been since 2014, and more than a million listeners fewer than Q3/18).

Radio 1’s audience is down from 9.8m at the end of 2017 to 9.37m at the end of 2018 (rises to 10.19m when listeners aged 10-15 are included)

Radio 2 is down from 15.49m a year ago to 14.89m; Radio 3 down from 1.95m to 1.83m and Radio 4 down from 11.25m to 10.48m (a drop of 769,000).

1Xtra had a reach of 1.06m weekly listeners compared with 1.07m last year, 6 Music posts 2.29 million listeners (down from 2.34m last year) and Radio 4 Extra attracted 2.13 million listeners per week (from 2.01m last quarter and 2.26m last year).

The BBC World Service is the only success story among the networks in this RAJAR release, recording a weekly UK audience of 1.55 million (up from 1.47m last quarter and 1.51m last year).

The BBC’s combined Local Radio network also drops – from 8.2m in Q4/17 to 7.79m in Q4/18.

Greg James’ arrival on Radio 1 breakfast has seen him add around 230,000 listeners in his first full quarter, with the show back over 5m listeners.

Chris Evans’ final quarter on Radio 2 breakfast saw an increase of 241,000 listeners, though the 9.065m reach was down almost 400k from the end of 2017.

5 live Breakfast has lost 316,000 listeners over the year (2.245m down to 1.929m), while Radio 4’s Today Programme drops from 7.146m to 6.798m – a loss of 348,000.

Bob Shennan, Director of BBC Radio and Music, said: “It’s brilliant that our new and fresh Radio 1 Breakfast Show is doing so well, on air as well as digitally on BBC Sounds, social media and YouTube. Greg James is a superb DJ and we know his listeners love the show. We can see that a busy few months for listeners in the run up to Christmas has impacted on all radio listening in the UK, but despite that our radio breakfast shows demonstrate what an important role live radio still plays in people’s daily lives with millions waking up to BBC Radio, whether it’s for brilliant music, great guests or comprehensive news coverage.

“Nearly 9 in 10 people continue to listen to radio in the UK but as we know listening habits are changing. We’ve made great strides in reinventing our overall audio offer so that audiences now and in the future can discover the very best of the BBC, whenever they want to. This is paying off and increasing numbers of people are listening to music, radio and podcasts on BBC Sounds with recent record figures.”

Ben Cooper, Controller BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra & Asian Network, said: “It’s a fantastic start for both Breakfast Shows with Greg James putting on over 300,000 new listeners for a total of 5.59 million, and Matt & Mollie with the Weekend Breakfast Show reaching 4 million weekly listeners. RAJAR figures are only part of the story, and as well as over 10 million listeners, Radio 1 had record highs of 14 million weekly views on Radio 1’s YouTube channel.”

The link above also gives information about Commercial Stations, but I've only extracted Radio 1 and BBC stations here.

Seems everything is down across the board, so most likely it's a blip and will go up for Q1 2019. Pleased Gregg has given an increase of listeners for the breakfast show, not as many as I was expecting given the positive comments about the show, but as radio listening across the board is down, we'll hopefully see a better picture for the next set of figures.

With the news today that Heart is going national with breakfast, could Scott Mills be in the frame for the job as rumoured previously?

It wouldn't surprise me. There's no chance of R1 giving him Breakfast and I'm sure Heart would pay a lot to have him.

I doubt it. He knows he'll be moved on Radio 2 in years to come so has a job for as long as he wants it.

Radio 1 have announced their first Big Weekend artists right now. The location is Middlesborough.

The 1975 (headliner)
Miley Cyrus (headliner)
Little Mix
Khalid
Zara Larsson
Mabel

Posted by: M4NG0 Feb 27 2019, 09:30 AM

Miley headlining above Little Mix seems a bit strange, surely Little Mix are the bigger artist, certainly in the UK?

Posted by: fans for hilson Feb 27 2019, 09:52 AM

Hannah Montana is so much bigger than little mix

Posted by: 365 Feb 27 2019, 09:52 AM

Yeah, Miley's last album didn't even go Silver, and Little Mix have waaaay more hits than her.

Posted by: danG Feb 27 2019, 10:35 AM

They must be expecting Miley to come back with a big single of her own soon, she's probably going more pop again after the flop of her last album.

Posted by: Whoody4Paramore Feb 27 2019, 09:06 PM

Mumford & Sons and Future are the next to be announced.

Have R1 ever playlisted Future? I imagine he'll be in the 1xtra tent.

Posted by: JosephAvery Feb 28 2019, 06:48 PM

They definitely playlisted Mask Off.

I got to say Radio 1 is hugely Ageist, the Madonna & Maluma track is great

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Apr 24 2019, 06:41 PM

They're not ageist - they playlist who appeals to their young audience. And yes, that is largely younger artists. Madonna is not relevant to most young people.

For example, the two members of Thirty Seconds to Mars are 49 & 47 - all 3 of their last singles were playlisted by Radio 1 and they even played at Radio 1's Big Weekend last year. Because their audience is largely young people, especially with Jared's acting career as well.

Other examples: Eminem (46) & Sia (43) also have young fanbases.

Posted by: Bjork Apr 24 2019, 06:45 PM

yes, R1 is totally ageist and mysoginist :/ sadly

Posted by: Dan17F1 Apr 24 2019, 07:08 PM

This conversation constantly goes around - Radio 1 is not ageist, can you imagine many 16 year olds choosing to listen to Madonna’s new single, it just doesn’t appeal to them. On the other hand, if Eminem released a new single, R1 would Playlist it because you can imagine that age group listening to it. Radio 1 is just trying to appeal to their target demographic. On the other hand, Radio 2 have playlisted the new Madonna song because the song is mainly appealing to older people!

Posted by: Bjork Apr 24 2019, 07:15 PM

I disagree 1000%, Madonna is not being played despite making music for young people and featuring a hot name that young people like
Madonna is not making music for people age 60, it's not Bette Midler territory

and the example of 30 Seconds to Mars being playlist that R1 is not only ageost but also misogynistic

Adding Billy Ray Cyrus to Old Town Road didn't make it an 'older person's song' so I don't think the same can be said about Maluma. Madonna just doesn't appeal to a Radio station aiming for a young demographic. Plus R2 is 30+ demographic in BBC's eyes which suits Madonna far more imo - hence the insta-add. This isn't a slight on her or the song, it's just not for R1.

-Madonna really doesn't make music for young people.
-Maluma isn't popular in the UK at all really.
-Yes, Madonna isn't making music for 60 year olds. Artists don't often make music for exactly their age, she is making music for 40-50 year olds. Like Jason Derulo for example has a young audience, he isn't aimed at people in their late 20s.
-As I said, 30STM are playlisted because they have a young audience - Madonna doesn't.

Posted by: JosephAvery Apr 24 2019, 07:35 PM

I think Madonna not even going top 200 on Spotify despite placing at #3 on New Music Friday speaks volumes of how much the younger generation are interested in her. The song itself isn't remotely commercial either. There's a different argument perhaps for the last two leads, but it's not difficult to see why Radio 1 won't go for Medellín.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Apr 25 2019, 10:04 AM

Radio 1 just don't playlist anything by an artist again once they've dumped them, regardless of the song. That's just the way it is unfortunately.

Have you not heard their Greatest Hits shows?

Posted by: danG Apr 25 2019, 11:19 AM

There’s a difference between playing an old Madonna song on their GH show and actually play listing her new song. R1 listeners are probably happy to bop along to Hung Up/4 Minutes for nostalgia but have no interest in her new stuff.

That's a very rare exception. It's certainly true of "pop" based artists like Madonna, and all the hot current acts of that ilk will have the same thing happen to them one day too.

I don't necessarily think it's an "age" based thing, they just decide when they no longer deem an act to be 'relevant' and that's that.

It’s fairly common knowledge that R1 have no interest in playing new Madonna songs regardless of their ‘quality’. She simply isn’t relevant to their target audience in current year.

I don’t think they’d have gone back to Maroon 5 if Moves Like Jagger hadn’t been so massive. They tried their best to ignore that song as they’d already decided that they were irrelevant and they were proved massively wrong.

I can’t see Madonna getting a turnaround even if she does have an unprecedented hit. They’ll never believe that teenagers might want to listen to music from a 60 year old woman. It’s not right but it’s unfortunately true.

Celebration in 2009 was the last time she was on the playlist. I don’t know why this gets brought up every era, first of all Radio 1 does not have anywhere near the impact it had 10 years ago - even if she was on the playlist it still wouldn’t be a hit, because it’s streams would be low regardless.

Spotify and Apple Music playlists are much more important than radio. Kylie managed to sneak a week in the top 40 with Dancing thanks to a vinyl single and good promo - that’s the best artists like Kylie, Madonna and Cher can ask for.

Madonna is the Queen of pop and had over 20 years being played on Radio 1, which most artists now will not get near. Let new and emerging artists have it.

We all know by now that Radio 1 don't playlist songs based on their quality.

The tea is that as she's not been playlisted with anything for 10 years, she won't be playlisted ever again no matter what it is.

Even that wouldn’t make a difference. Maroon 5 aside, once Radio 1 drop an artist, they never come back. It’s not even an age thing. They last play listed Paloma Faith (with her own material) with Picking Up The Pieces. She was neither old nor unpopular when they dropped have but she’s only appeared on there as a featured artist ever since.

They still feature older tracks from artists they don't play new music from (i.e Robbie, Kylie, Madonna, etc.....) but as Dan said most of their audience would rather listen to the older stuff from those artists instead of their new releases.

Radio 1's job is to introduce us to new artists and bands.

Posted by: DASHER77 Apr 25 2019, 04:38 PM

Zero doubt in my mind that BBC radio 1 is ageist AND mysognisitic.

Madonna is the perfect example. BBC as a whole does have a known ageism bias. Especially where women are concerned. We all know it.

Despite Madonna's music often sounding like other music played on the station (often same producers etc), she's not played because the BBC Radio 1 programmers don't think their audeince listens to her. They think it's because she's too old. That's prejudice, and whilst it may be true (that younger listeners don't know her music), it doesn't make it right. A publicly funded body has a moral right to NOT discount somebody's work, just because of his/her age.

How about if BBC radio 1 was allowed to NOT play an artist because they sounded too white or too black - there would be uproar, and rightly so. Ageism is no different. BBC radio 1 controllers should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to perpetuate the myth that because someone like Madonna is 60, her music cannot be of interest to someone of 16. Its time to change that.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Apr 25 2019, 04:43 PM

But as it's been said - they playlist an artist based on how relevant their music is to their audience. Madonna isn't.

Why would they play music from an artist that very few young people will care about or even know? They don't play new music from Robbie Williams, Take That, Will Young, Boy George, and lots more older artists. They aren't singling Madonna out.

This has got nothing to do with her age - but it's to do with who she targets at and who her audience is. David Guetta is 51, his music is playlisted because it appeals to young people and his music is popular.

Posted by: myxxd Apr 25 2019, 04:48 PM

Madonna is still lucky that they playlisted Celebration in 2009

Posted by: Medellíam Apr 25 2019, 04:50 PM

I think female popstars are at a disadvantage because their ages are always well documented and focused on. David Guetta may be 51 but it's never been the focus of media attention where as people have always talked about Madonna's age and I think that has had an effect on radio play.

QUOTE(gavindeejay @ Apr 25 2019, 05:09 PM) *
They still feature older tracks from artists they don't play new music from (i.e Robbie, Kylie, Madonna, etc.....) but as Dan said most of their audience would rather listen to the older stuff from those artists instead of their new releases.

Radio 1's job is to introduce us to new artists and bands.

I am completely aware of this, but I was specifically talking about them (not) playlisting new material from these artists.

I think the turning point for Madonna in Radio 1 terms was obviously 'Give Me All Your Luvin', which itself was 3 years after 'Celebration' and they seemed to be stricter in their playlisting of certain artists from the turn of the decade onwards. I remember at the time how shocked I was by that, as I just assumed Madonna had the power to get playlisted forever.

Posted by: Steve201 Apr 25 2019, 07:09 PM

Come on people - Madonna was playlisted by radio 1 from 1984-2009 that's longer than nearly all other pop stars no matter what their gender.

And if she was a feature on the next Calvin single I'm pretty certain it would be playlisted. And on the moral right of a public service broadcaster to play all types of artists - she was A listed instantly on radio 2 (which these days prob has a bigger iTunes impact anyway lol).

I don't think he'll leave Radio 1 just yet. At worst he'll be dropped from afternoon's and stay on the chart show, but I doubt he'll be dropped from afternoon's for a while yet!

Maybe he has about 5 more years left until Radio 1 decide he's a Radio 2 artist.

He'd be 50 then which is about 15 years older than the oldest artists that Radio 1 regularly playlist

Posted by: lewistgreen May 2 2019, 05:03 PM

Scott still brings in the listeners, so I doubt they'll bump him any time soon. It's a shame they've decided Matt & Mollie are better breakfast stand-ins for Greg when Scott was always great at that! We still have Annie Nightingale and David Rodigan going strong, albeit in late night slots, so they don't always just get rid due to age.

Some snippets from this week's playlist

Miley is Insta-A listed.
Katy is insta-B listed.
Charli still on B
I don't think they've playlisted Cardi yet.

Miley was a given for a "thank you" A listing, given she's just headlined for them, they always massively favour their Big Weekend artists around this time.

I'm pleasantly surprised with Katy going straight to B list, they must e fairly confident in this song after 3/4 of the last songs under-performed. 365 only went C-C-B-B and wasn't insta-added.

Surprising they have the explicit version when it doesn’t strike me as a song that would be played after 9pm anyway based on the shows they have on throughout the night

Do they have swearing on the night time shows? The only late show I listen to is Jack Saunders and they always censor the songs.

Occasionally, on the specialist shows in the early hours they’ll always play a warning of bad language.. but if they’re not going to make use of the watershed then it begs the question why have any explicit tracks in their library at all? tongue.gif

Ah, that's quite an interesting page!

Their most played artists of the last year are:

1. Ariana Grande (1,100)
2. The 1975 (1,069)
3. Drake (899)
4. George Ezra (894)
5. Little Mix (776)
6. Dave (775)
7. Lewis Capaldi (775)
8. Bring Me the Horizon (729)
9. Twenty One Pilots (729)
10. Billie Eilish (702)

Sam Fender at #11. I doubt it's 100% accurate, but a good indication.

On the topic of Loud Luxury, Radio 1 have like a silver/recurrent playlist that doesn't get published where songs are re-added onto rotation. They're usually recent/no more than 2 years old; suppose they've got to give their playlist that little bit of variety.

Posted by: Steve201 Jun 19 2019, 08:50 PM

Yeh Lewis is tight, although some of the silver songs are older than 2 years sometimes as old as 8-9 years!

Lorna Clarke named as Controller of Pop at the BBC

Lorna Clarke has been named as BBC Controller of Pop, giving her control over BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC Asian Network and BBC Radio 6 Music.

Also, Mohit Bakaya is the new Controller of BBC Radio 4, replacing Gwyneth Williams who left the BBC earlier this year after 43 years at the corporation.

And Jonathan Wall has been appointed as the new Director of BBC Sounds after the launch director, Charlotte Lock, moved on following nine months in the role.

Jonathan’s move to BBC Sounds means former Bauer executive Richard Maddock will become Acting Controller of Radio 5 live, supported by Heidi Dawson as Managing Editor.

Lorna was previously Network Manager then Head of Production for BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music and was the Electric Proms Director for four years. She started her career in 1983 in the newsrooms of BBC Cornwall, Radio Viking, Metro Radio, BBC GLR and World Service News.

In 1990 she joined Kiss 100 in London and worked her way up to the role of Programme Director where she was awarded Best Radio Programmer by the commercial radio industry. In 2002, Lorna became Head of Mainstream Programmes for BBC Radio 1 for five years, followed by four years as the BBC Talent Executive and time spent as Head of Programmes for 1Xtra.

Lorna has also judged the Sony Radio Awards for 11 years and The Mercury Music prize on four occasions. She says: “My career has been defined by music, and as a music lover I want the BBC to continue to bring the world of music even closer to our listeners. These are exciting times for the BBC and the music industry globally, where change is affecting us all at a rapid pace.

“I am really looking forward to working with the industry and our partners to continue delivering amazing music for our audiences.”

James Purnell, Director of Radio and Education, says: “It’s an exciting time for the audio industry and these are some of the most sought after jobs in radio. There were many impressive candidates, but I’m delighted Jonathan, Lorna and Mohit are taking on these important roles.

“For many of us, radio is a constant companion. It’s also a source of truth and but also sometimes of wonder. With these appointments, we will have a team that works even more closely to continue to love our radio stations and grow BBC Sounds. Working together, BBC radio can make a difference – to the ideas we debate, the music we love, the way we understand each other.

“All three of the new Controllers talked about how they will empower their new teams, and I look forward to working with them to maximise the creativity of everyone who works with us for the benefit of our millions of listeners.”

Mohit Bakaya, new Controller of Radio 4, says: “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t passionate about Radio 4. I know what the station means to our listeners and the unique place it has in the public consciousness and important role it plays in the national debate.

“The intellectual ambition of the network and the thought-provoking, and often awe-inspiring, programmes we broadcast are more important now than ever. After being a Commissioning Editor at the network for several years, it will be a privilege to lead Radio 4 and the brilliant staff who, every day, make it the valued and much loved station it is.”

Jonathan Wall, new Controller of BBC Sounds, adds: “After 21 wonderful years at 5 live it is time for a fresh challenge. BBC Sounds, alongside iPlayer, will help make the BBC thrive and it’s a privilege to get the chance to lead so many talented people who want to make sure we reach as many listeners as possible with our brilliant radio, music and podcasts. I can’t wait to get started.”

Lorna Clarke will start in September, Jonathan Wall and Mohit Bakaya will take on their new roles in August.

AudioUK, the trade association representing over 100 audio production companies around the UK welcomes the three appointments today. Will Jackson, Managing Director told RadioToday: “We welcome the news of these new appointments. We and our members look forward to working with Mohit, Lorna and Jonathan in their respective new roles, as we continue to move towards the target of 60% competition for programme-making in BBC Radio by 2022 and work to agree terms of trade with BBC Sounds.”

The BBC will advertise for the Controller of Radio 5 Live in the near future, and RadioToday is currently asking what the appointments mean for Ben Cooper, current Controller of BBC Radio 1, 1Xta and BBC Asian Network.

Anyone else think R1 seem to have unofficially dropped the 15-29 thing? I'm 36 and was greeted with multiple bangers from when I was seven this morning, like Dirty Cash and Groove is in the Heart. And I loved it. Plus, was great to hear the likes of Regulate and X Gon' Give It To Ya yesterday. Radio 2 are still terrified of a lot of 1990s dance and most hip-hop hits, and I never feel 'at home' or comfortable when I am listening to it. I wish R1 would just come out and say "**** off commercial radio, why shouldn't we compete with you?" and just carry on doing what it is doing, which is playing Top 40 hits, current bangers that won't chart but fit the tone of the station and a load of old songs that still sound pretty youthful and vibrant regardless of their vintage. And Radio 2 can focus on pop, commercial rock and the most inoffensive M People and Glynne-esque dance from all eras I guess. This age thing clearly isn't working when so many people in their 30s and 40s and even older have grown up on the kind of massive rap and dance hits R2 are still ignoring, whilst R1 happily plays those songs.

The bits of https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2qNJsnjYFvbLrK9CZ0CfYfM/radio-2-new-music-playlist that aren't on R1 anyway aren't my cup of anything! I seriously don't want to hear what the Kaiser Chiefs are up to now, 11 years after their last real hit. Although I have heard that Emeli Sande single. Is she actively trying to sound boring and middle-aged?

I’ve always loved the presenting style of Rickie, Melvin and Charlie since their Kiss Breakfast days but I’ve fallen out of love with the persistent hip hop tracks they want to play

Posted by: Hiyaluv Aug 26 2019, 05:44 PM

Have only listened to Tong and Saunders but it has been absolutely fire this afternoon. Obviously you wouldn't want this that regularly as the novelty would wear off but they should have more Nighttime Takeovers on Bank Holiday Mondays as there's only so many times you can say "Sk8r Boi! I haven't heard this for ages!".

Also, Tong sounds nowhere near 59. Long may he continue.

Interesting to hear recent singles from bands I was once massively into including ones R1 once loved on daytime. I was wondering if the lack of daytime R1 play was making me prejudiced and making these songs seem less credible and important but no, Salted Caramel Ice Cream and Hungry Child probably didn't deserve to make the playlist as they are very meh. Not that they were ever into Metronomy much. Yay, love the fact Smells Like Teen Spirit is still a R1 song. Will never get old!

Posted by: Steve201 Aug 28 2019, 05:37 PM

It's been a while since we did playlist predictions, as it's more difficult to anticipate when they will playlist stuff these days... but here's what I think might get added tomorrow:

Sam Feldt - Post Malone
Post Malone - Circles (and surely that would be the first time two new additions have shared the same artist and title!)
Tones And I - Dance Monkey (desperately hoping...)
Regard - Ride It

Do we think they'll add the new Ava Max? They might wait to see if it starts climbing the charts.

I do wonder if they will support the final single from Bring and The Horizons current album; Sugar, Honey, Ice & Tea. It's been played a lot on he evening shows.

I think all 4 of those will be added along with possibly Lalala - Y2K? That does seem like a song that they might ignore though.

I hope Torn gets playlisted tomorrow, otherwise she’ll be a radio 2 flop

Rickie, Melvin and Charlie make their proper daytime debut this week (recent nighttime takeover aside) as they cover for Scott Mills which means their 9pm show will be simulcast with 1Xtra instead bringing across Twin B, Jamz Supernova, the 1Xtra Residency and Seani B.

Cel Spellman and Katie Thistleton will be doing this week’s chart on Friday

Early Weekend Breakfast also launched over the weekend starting at 4am on a Friday and 5am on a Sat/Sun with Arielle Free taking on presenting duties.

Scott Mills and Chris Stark get Saturday mornings on 5 Live

Scott Mills and Chris Stark will host a new Saturday morning show on 5 Live from November in Danny Baker’s old slot.

The BBC Radio 1 afternoon presenters will start on Saturday 9th November 2019 and air from 9am till 11am.

Scott will continue to host his Radio 1 weekday show and the Official Chart. Chris is staying at Radio 1 too, and will still co-present BBC Radio 5 live’s That Peter Crouch Podcast.

Scott Mills says: “I’m so delighted to be joining BBC Radio 5 live! I love my Radio 1 show and covering for Claudia on Radio 2 which I’ll still be doing. But I’m now ready to bring a whole different show to 5 live. Expect lots of laughs and of course Chris Stark. Just what you want on a Saturday morning!”

There will also be changes to Sundays on BBC Radio 5 live. The BBC’s Deputy Political Editor John Pienaar’s weekly programme (Pienaar’s Politics) moves to the earlier time of 9am featuring big political interviews and insights into the week at Westminster.

This is followed at 10am by Laura Whitmore. After two summer series on 5 live, Laura returns every Sunday morning with guests from the worlds of politics, music and showbiz.

At 11.30am 5 live’s Sunday sports coverage kicks off with discussion show The Squad With Nick Bright, followed by 5 live Premier League Sunday.

Heidi Dawson, Controller at BBC Radio 5 live says: “Scott Mills is one of the best broadcasters in the business and I’m excited about the new show he and Chris Stark will be bringing to Saturday mornings.

“Laura Whitmore has done a fantastic job across a number of shows on 5 live and it’s brilliant that we can now offer her a show every Sunday morning. Laura is a fantastic new radio star who has already made a great impact with listeners.”

Chris Stark says: “Saturday mornings for me were always the excitement of a day of sport ahead and the routines that came with it. Wenzels steak slice, listening to Fighting Talk, meeting up with mates at the Pinner war memorial before kicking on to Vicarage Road. To take on Saturday mornings at 5 Live is a huge honour. I’m excited for us to make a show that reflects the lives and stories of everyone listening on a Saturday morning. The best time of the week. We cannot wait to get started.

Laura Whitmore says: “I am thrilled to have my own full time show and be part of the 5 Live family. The station has been hugely supportive of the topics I’ve covered so far and the people I’ve interviewed. With a longer show, I’m excited to build on this as well as bringing some new exciting discussions to the station.”

The new BBC Radio 5 live weekend morning schedule is as follows:

Saturdays (from 9 Nov)

9-11am – Scott Mills and Chris Stark
11am-midday – Fighting Talk
midday – 5 live Sport
(continues as before)

Sundays (from 10 Nov)

9-10am – Pienaar’s Politics
10-11.30am – Laura Whitmore
11.30am-12.30pm – The Squad With Nick Bright
12.30pm – 5 live Premier League Sunday
(continues as before)

Half Term schedule changes from Monday

Katie Thistleton is covering for Adele Roberts
Jordan North in for Scott Mills
Phil Taggart in for Annie Mac (Danny Howard is covering Friday)
Adele Roberts is looking after Rickie, Melvin and Charlie's show
Eats Everything is in for Danny Howard on Friday
Kenny Allstar is covering for Tiffany Calvert on Saturday for The Rap Show
Frank Carter is covering for Daniel P Carter on Sunday night for The Rock Show

I think they could have tested the waters by having Cel and Katie standing in for Scott on the chart show recently as I reckon Scott will at least give up the chart show next year to accommodate his increasing non-Radio 1 commitments.

Radio 1 boss Ben Cooper to leave the BBC - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-50141761

QUOTE
Radio 1 boss Ben Cooper has announced he is leaving the BBC after eight years running the station.
In an email to staff he said it was a "childhood dream" to work at the station but it was "time for a new challenge".

Ben, who is also the boss of 1Xtra and Asian Network, says he's "proud" of what his teams have achieved together over the years.
It's not been revealed where he will be heading to next.

Ben said the role of Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network in "celebrating and championing youth culture" is "so important" for the BBC.
"Whether that is the new music we play or reflecting the issues that concern young people today, I'm very proud of what we have achieved together over the years."

He thanked his teams for being "creative, ambitious and passionate" and said their work was "greatly appreciated".
Ben said he would be continuing in his role until the new year.

During his eight years as head of Radio 1, Ben has seen some huge changes and brought some big names into the BBC.
He was in charge when Nick Grimshaw began hosting the Radio 1 breakfast show in 2011 - which saw him become the second-longest running breakfast show presenter in Radio 1 history.

Ben also oversaw a big shake-up of the Radio 1 line-up in 2018 - moving the weekend schedule forward to start on Fridays.
He brought in new Friday shows for Maya Jama and The Saturdays' Mollie King - and Scott Mills began hosting the chart show.
In April this year, he also poached former Kiss FM breakfast hosts Ricky, Melvin and Charlie to Radio 1.

The trio took over the 9-11pm show which had previously been presented by Charlie Sloth.

Charlie left Radio 1 and 1Xtra "with immediate effect" in October 2018 - and didn't finish his final ten shows as originally planned.
He had been in the spotlight for storming the stage and delivering a sweary, Kanye West-esque rant at an awards show.
On the night, Ben got up onto the stage shortly after to accept an award on behalf of Radio 1.

"I'd just like to say Charlie Sloth has left the building and is leaving Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Apologies," he told the audience.
In an email to BBC staff, James Purnell, Director, Radio & Education, said Ben had kept Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network "fresh and relevant".

He said under Ben's leadership Radio 1 had become "more than just a radio station" and was a "hugely impactful youth brand" with more than 15 million weekly YouTube views and 10 million social followers.

James added: "He's championed new talent, both on and off air, and built lasting relationships with the music industry.

"Ben has also protected the unbeatable place we have in the lives of young people in the UK, ensuring our radio stations remain the go to places for the biggest global music acts."

Posted by: lewistgreen Oct 22 2019, 09:17 PM

I think he’s done a fantastic job in shaking up the station and bringing in some fresh talent in the likes of Jordan North, Arielle Free and Katie Thistleton and refreshing some of the long-standing presenters too giving them new shows/slots etc

What I’m worried about now is someone blundering in and messing up what’s good. I genuinely cannot fault their current lineup apart from maybe Clara but that’s more of a personal dislike to her presenting style tongue.gif

Maybe Aled will take over seeing as he’s already Head of Programming anyway

Posted by: Steve201 Oct 23 2019, 05:01 PM

Its not the lineup that's the problem for me since he arrived its basically become more and more like Capital FM and hasn't done enough to keep its uniqueness imo. If its not reducing the playlist down in songs its rotating more of the same songs on each show and having less indie on the playlist and especially the A-List. TBF not sure if that's his fault or if he doesn't have a lot of input but its a problem.

Posted by: lewistgreen Oct 23 2019, 10:40 PM

But they expanded the playlist in 2016 to include more tracks? laugh.gif

And they play a hell of a lot of indie still on their daytime playlist, PLUS Annie Mac and Jack Saunders have weeknight shows pretty much dedicated to the genre????

Radio 1 actually haven’t changed their playlist rotation at all. True they recycle the same tracks like any other radio station, but that’s always been the case.

Posted by: Steve201 Oct 23 2019, 10:48 PM

If you check the playlist from just 15 years ago (I know before Coopers time) it's a lot different and more expansive. The A List used to have 20 songs alone.

They play ALOT more indie than the commercial stations but it's normally Dermot Kennedy or Sam Fender and that's it.

Great to see Gregg James increase his figures in today’s Rajar.

From Radio Today:- https://radiotoday.co.uk/2019/10/rajar-q3-2019-london-and-national-brands-round-up/

QUOTE
Zoe Ball has lost another 364,000 listeners to her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show in the latest radio listening figures from RAJAR.

It means more than a million weekly listeners have switched off since she took over the breakfast show from Chris Evans in January. In the period 24th June to 15th September 2019 (Q3/2019), Radio 2 breakfast had a weekly reach of 7.902m – that’s down from 8.266m in Q2 and 9.047m in Q1.

While Zoe is still the presenter of the UK’s biggest breakfast show, the figures are the lowest for the slot in a decade – since Q3/2009 when Sir Terry Wogan had a weekly reach of 7.76m.

The country’s second-biggest breakfast show – the Today Programme on Radio 4 – also posts its worst figures for 10 years this quarter, dropping to a reach of 6.601m – from 6.789m a year ago and 6.850m in Q2/19.

Meanwhile, Greg James has gained 180,000 new listeners for Radio 1’s Breakfast Show in the last year, with a reach of 5.049m. The station says Greg is the number one breakfast show among 10-29-year-olds across the UK.

Behind Zoe,’Today’ and Greg are Heart’s Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, who debut with 4.559m weekly listeners. It makes Heart Breakfast the biggest commercial radio show in the UK, and the country’s fourth most popular breakfast show. The Heart network has increased its overall weekly reach since introducing a networked breakfast show.

Capital’s Roman, Vick & Sonny are down 143,000 from last quarter to post a Q3/19 reach of 3.653m – the 5th biggest breakfast show, ahead of Absolute Radio’s Dave Berry in 6th with a record 2.239m.

Chris Evans’ Virgin Radio breakfast audience (across the three stations) remains fairly static, adding 3,000 listeners compared with the previous quarter to give a weekly reach of 1.114m. Chris’ listening hours are down though, from 5.35m last quarter to 4.5m in Q3/19.

Virgin Radio UK’s total weekly hours of 8.07mm are down from 10m last quarter, and reach for the main station is down 8.3% from the previous 3 months – from 1.545m to 1.417m. There was good growth for the spin-off stations though, with Virgin Anthems up 78% to 148k and Virgin Chilled up 43% to 208k.

Wireless’ talkRADIO and Global’s LBC have both seen big year-on-year audience increases, helped no doubt by the arrival of a new Prime Minister in Q3/19 and the ongoing uncertainty over Brexit. talkRADIO is up a whopping 56.7% from a year ago – to its highest ever reach of 409,000.

LBC similarly posts its best ever figures in 46 years on the air – its audience is up 23% across the UK to 2.574m listeners a week, compared with 2.090m this time last year. Nick Ferrari at breakfast breaks another record for the show, with 1.5m tuning in across the UK.

And here’s a wow moment – Nick Ferrari on LBC is now the number 1 commercial breakfast show in London on reach, hours and share, overtaking Capital Breakfast in London for the first time in recent memory, possibly ever! His reach of 813,000 in London is actually down year on year, but in that year he’s jumped above Capital and Kiss.

Eddie Mair celebrates his highest reach on LBC with 865,000 weekly listeners, up nearly 200k year on year in his timeslot.

5 Live hasn’t seen the same effect of a busy summer of news though, with the main station dropping under 5m in Q3/19. A busy summer of cricket, however, helped 5 Live Sports Extra to its best ever reach – a massive 2.195m (up 31% compared with the previous summer, and nearly half a million higher than its previous record audience in summer 2015).

And it’s interesting to note that, while BBC Radio 4‘s total national audience is down 3% year on year to 10.3m, the station has actually increased its audience in London by 7% over the same period – rising to 2.6m listeners in the capital.

With 9.81m listeners, Heart remains the UK’s biggest commercial radio brand – and it’s beaten only by Radio 2 and Radio 4 across all radio listening. Heart’s reach has been helped by a large jump for Heart 80s – which is up 23% year on year to a record 1.672m.

New digital stations Heart 70s, Heart 90s and Heart Dance aren’t in RAJAR yet. If they could pull in a combined audience of a million then the Heart brand could well overtake the Radio 4 brand (including 4 Extra).

With a weekly reach of 8.1m, Capital is the second biggest national brand across the UK followed by Smooth (5.7m), Kiss (5.5m), Classic FM (5.1m), Absolute (4.9m) and Magic (4.2m).

The ‘Hits Radio Brand‘ posts a weekly reach of 6.7m in RAJAR, but as well as Hits Radio, Greatest Hits Radio and Country Hits Radio this is made up of stations operating under varied brands including Metro, Hallam, Clyde, MFR, Free and Radio City Talk.

Capital London had a poor book in Q3/19, losing more than a quarter of a million listeners compared with Q2/19 – and just over half a million from a year ago (2.073m down to 1.571m). It means that Magic London is now just 4,000 listeners away from overtaking Capital as the biggest commercial station in London.

Radio X has had a good Q3/19 across the UK, with reach, hours and share all up. 116k extra listeners this quarter and 20k year on year increase the total audience to 1.737m. In London reach is up nearly a quarter over the last 12 months – from 358k to 446k. Chris Moyles posts a national breakfast audience of 975,000, that’s up more than 50k year on year.

Capital Xtra is up a little bit year on year, while Gold sees its weekly audience drop by 44,000 to 1.288m. In London, Gold’s reach has decreased by 12.5% year on year. Classic FM drops 1% of its reach from last year (50,000 listeners) to post a weekly audience of 5.137m

All that means Global‘s radio brands now reach 25.4m people every week, with listening hours at 236m. Global has a 24% market share of all radio listening in the UK.

Bauer Media‘s total weekly radio reach is up 1.1% year on year, meanwhile to 18.4m people.

KISSTORY remains the UK’s biggest digital-only station, with its audience up 18.4% year on year. The move to the D1 multiplex earlier this year has helped it to post a record reach of 2.554m in Q3/19.

Fortunes don’t look as good for the main Kiss station, however. Kiss London has lost 686,000 listeners (35% of its audience) over the last 12 months – down from 1.958m to 1.272m. Kiss Breakfast nationally is also down 423,000 compared to a year ago.

Despite audience drops for its 70s and 90s stations, the total Absolute Radio Network has increased reach by 1.4% (67k) in a year to now reach 4.921m people each week. As mentioned above, Dave Berry posts a record for his breakfast show with 2.239m listeners. Absolute Radio’s London audience, however, is down 4.4% and Dave has lost 70,000 listeners in the capital in a year (473k down to 403k).

With Magic 105.4 banging at the door to be London’s biggest commercial radio station, it’s also seen good growth nationally, with the Magic Radio Network up 3.6% year on year to now reach 4.2m. This was helped by good growth for DAB services Mellow Magic and Magic Chilled. Mellow is up 23% year on year to 664k, while Chilled rises 12.2% to 377k. Magic Soul is down slightly year on year. Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott’s national breakfast show has added 228,000 listeners over the last 12 months (17.6%) to now reach 1.501m people each week.

Bauer’s Scala Radio and Country Hits Radio both post their first full half-year figures this quarter after debuting in RAJAR in Q2. Scala dips from 258k to 231k, while total hours are down from 1.5m to 1.2m. Country Hits posts a reach of 234k in Q3/19 (up from 208k last quarter), and total listening hours up from 783,000 to 904,000.

Jazz FM remains constant compared with last quarter, but has lost over 100,000 listeners year on year – now reaching 548k across the UK.

Hits Radio as a station across the UK has added 9,000 listeners over the year – going from 801k reach to 810k, while Greatest Hits Radio nationally adds 103,000 from its debut last quarter (up from 715k in Q2/19 to 818k in Q3/19). See our analysis of local radio results for Q3/19 for a detailed picture of how the Hits and Greatest Hits brands are doing on local licences around the UK. Nationally at breakfast, the new team posted a reach of 345,000 this summer – down very slightly from the 349,000 that the previous breakfast team attracted a year ago.

JACK Radio is up 16% quarter on quarter – from a reach of 125k to a reach of 145k a week. The station debuted in Q4/18 with a weekly reach of just 32,000. UNION Jack posts a record high of 184,000 – up from 155k last quarter and 111k a year ago. The JACK Radio brand – including the local stations in Oxfordshire – now has a combined reach of 394,000 – that’s up 80% year on year.

And Sunrise Radio is celebrating a 21% rise in audience over the last 12 months. The station – which is on the SDL national multiplex – has posted a reach of 383,000 listeners, up from 315,000 a year ago.

London market

Year on Year Reach Winners: Radio X London (up 24.6%), LBC London News (up 23.6%) BBC Radio London (up 5.9%)

Year on Year Reach Losers: Kiss London (down 35%), Capital London (down 24.2%), Smooth London (down 23.8%)

The biggest commercial station in London – just – is Capital with 1.571m, followed by Magic (1.567m), Heart (1.423m), LBC (1.341m) and Kiss (1.272m). A year ago, Kiss was a close second to Capital (2.073m v 1.958m) – now Kiss is way back in 5th place.

The number one commercial station in London on share is still LBC with 6.7%, followed by Magic (4.1%), Heart (4.0%), Capital (3.1%) then both Kiss and Smooth (2.5%)

Radio 4 and Radio 2 still dominate in the capital, with Radio 4 achieving weekly audiences of 2.592m (up 7% year on year) and Radio 2 reaching 2.186m (down 6.3% from 12 months ago). Radio 4’s share of London listening is a massive 14.4%.

Fun Kids’ over 10 year-olds figures show its best ever reach of 105k.

So here is the BBC Radio 1 Top 50 most played songs of 2019 for those with interest of what got played and how much they got played. All the information that I have included has come from the BBC Radio 1 Last.fm page which is avaliable online. The infomation takes all tracks played during the daytime period and nighttime periods and as well as songs played on simulcasts of 1Xtra shows. As always there may be some missing or incorrect data as some plays may have not been recorded due to failures with the scrobles (I.e. Radio 1 failed to record down the songs played during their 2019 Anthems show yesterday so I have added a play to those which did get played but did not get recoreded down) but the data below will give a mostly clear idea as to which tracks was played the most in 2019. Also inlcuded is the most played songs for each month.

NOTE: I have combined some tracks with mutiple versions, as you can see below. The reason I did this was because both versions of the tracks recieved regular spot plays and are basically the same song anyway (I.e. Combined both the amount of plays Taylor Swift - Lover and the remix featuring Shawn Mendes was played) so I decided it would be best to combine anyway. The uncombined version that was most played will be listed below and I do make a note of where they would have been in the chart when they weren't combined. I didn't however combine dance remixes of any of the tracks.

First thoughts on the data is lol at Body and 17 being in the top 30 despite being playlisted in 2018/17. Clearly got lots of spot plays during daytime and the dance shows. Great to see Sub Focus up there in the top 10 and for Joel Corry for making the top 20 despite not getting A-Listed.

Posted by: Dappy New Year Jan 1 2020, 01:25 PM

insane amount of plays for 'Desire' considering it wasn't even a hit but yay! 'Breathe' top 20 is also great to see.

as if '17' is top 40 for the year with its 2017 release date too.

Posted by: ChristmaSteve201 Jan 1 2020, 02:50 PM

Am I blind or are the 1975 not in the top 50?

Surprised Catfish and Sam Fender aren't higher but glad Vampire Weekend are there.

I'm just now catching up on the "20 years of Radio 1 Anthems" that they did from Boxing Day to New Year's Eve, and I'm really enjoying it! So many songs that you never hear anymore and I'm actually discovering songs I missed out on at the time! I know we were disappointed when this was announced instead of a proper end-of-decade countdown, but this was a great alternative.

Agreed, I listened to most of it too! Was slightly frustrating when they played Riptide in both 2013 and 2014 and then A Sky Full of Stars in both 2014 and 2015 though, they already had to cut a lot of songs short and leave several really good songs out so hearing them twice in about two hours wasn't ideal. Enjoyed being reminded of various songs that don't get played much now though!

Playlist predictions for tomorrow:
I don’t usually do this but there’s so much stuff that’s out that Radio 1 doesn’t have on their playlist at the moment, here’s what I think they’ll add tomorrow:
• Eminem - Godzilla (straight to a List) they’ll surely add this if it’s got a good chance of being number 1 tomorrow
• Calvin Harris - Whichever song is more mainstream (straight to a list) They always insta add new Calvin and I don’t see this one being any different
• J Hus - Big Conspiracy (straight to c list) They insta added him on the a list last year with Must Be. I don’t think that will happen this time but I still think an insta add will happen
• Hayley Williams - Simmer (c list) Radio 1 love Paramore so I think this will immediately get lots of support from them.
• Digdat ft. Aitch - Ei8ht Mile (c list) I think this song is doing too well in the charts for them to ignore
• Georgia - 24 hrs (c list) Another artist that radio 1 loves, Greg James’ tune of the week last week too means it’s surely going to get added at some point soon
• Doja Cat - Say So (c list) For a song that’s not on the playlist, this seems to have been played lots over the last few days.
• Tame Impala - Lost In Yesterday (c list) Got a feeling this might be added too
• Jonas Brothers - What a man gotta do (c list) Tune of the weekend last weekend makes me think that this will probably be added this week

Posted by: M4NGO Jan 23 2020, 11:26 PM

I think those are pretty spot on predictions actually. Is the Calvin Harris single definitely out this week?

Posted by: Steve201 Jan 23 2020, 11:54 PM

Those predictions look pretty good. If Calvins out he will def be added straight away. Not so sure about Eminem maybe an instant B List add because I'm not sure they look at him as A List material any longer due to how far into his career he is. 'Fall was B-Listed for Apr 5/6 weeks and 'Lucky You' was C-Listed for 3/4 weeks.

There's also a lot of instant add songs there, not sure radio 1 will go that mad but I would love it. Tame Impala def will as their albums out on the 14/2/20, 3 weeks away.

Posted by: Bré Jan 24 2020, 12:47 AM

I expect something from Eminem will be added but it might be 'Darkness' instead of 'Godzilla' because that is meant to be the official single, 'Godzilla' has just taken off of its own accord because of being Juice WRLD's first posthumous release and the only really good song on the album.

Mind, I'm not sure 'Darkness' is really a particularly radio friendly song tongue.gif

Posted by: M4NGO Jan 24 2020, 12:49 AM

At one point I thought the Ed collab was the official single - so now I'm really confused to what actually is (not that 'official' singles really mean much these days).

Quite pleased with that, 7 out of 9 isn’t bad. It’s just Brockhampton (who I thought might be added next week) and Twin Atlantic (who id never have got) that I missed.

Posted by: M4NGO Jan 24 2020, 01:56 PM

You should do it again next week and see if you can improve your score.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend is coming to Dundee from the 22nd to the 24th of May. These are the confirmed artists so far:
• AJ Tracey
• Biffy Clyro
• Calvin Harris
• Camila Cabello
• Dua Lipa
• Harry Styles

Nice to see Biffy on there, I’m assuming they must be releasing new music soon. They also haven’t announced if any of those are headliners however I would expect that Calvin would headline the Friday night dance stage and possibly Dua and Harry will headline the other two days?

Posted by: Steve201 Jan 27 2020, 11:47 PM

Wow class to see Biffy Clyro on the bill which means there's a good chance he will be supported for yet another era by Radio 1st daytime playlist. I would say Biffy should be one of the headliners I would think?

Has the big weekend not been in Dundee already quite recently?

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 27 2020, 11:51 PM

Given it's in Scotland as well I wouldn't be surprised to see Biffy headline

Posted by: coi Jan 27 2020, 11:51 PM

Radio 1's Big Weekend was in Dundee in 2006, if that counts as recently?

Feels recent and considering they try and bringing it to places that don't normally get big events I would think twice in 15 yrs is too much?!

R1 have played Baby by Four Tet 6 times since it was released on Friday!

Isn’t that a lot for a new song that’s not even playlisted?

Every single one of those plays has been during the night time shows, they love Four Tet!

No daytime plays, so it's not really that much at all.

They played it daytime once according to Lastfm x

Playlist predictions for tomorrow (not as optimistic as last week smile.gif)
• Dua Lipa - Physical (straight to a List) I’m hoping this is as good as I’ve heard people say it is!
• Georgia - 24 hrs
• Tame Impala - Lost in yesterday - Going to try both of these again as I still think they both might be added
• Tom Grennan - This is the Place - Think I might be a bit early with this but I’ll hope anyway
• SAINt JHn - Roses (Imanbak remix) - Adele Roberts’ Tune of the week and nearly entering the top 40 now
• Mac Miller - Blue World - this has been played quite a few times considering it isn’t yet playlisted
• Becky Hill - Better Off Without You - Now on the verge of the Top 40 and also had some spot plays here and there
• Tones and I - Never Seen the Rain - This one I’m least convinced about. I still think it’s playlisting might be a couple of weeks away.

Does anyone else have anything that they think might be added as well/instead?

It really is!

Good predictions again I think, but I'm not at all convinced that they'll support Tones & I, at least not unless it makes upwards progress in the chart. I'm also hopeful they'll playlist Joel Corry, I think 'Lonely' is a better song than 'Sorry' so I really want it to smash.

R1 hated Dance Monkey and added it super late, sure they'll pass on the new one

Yeah, unless it shows signs of becoming a hit (which I doubt it will tbh).

Posted by: Dan17F1 Jan 30 2020, 08:21 PM

It was Scott Mills’ Tune of the week this week so they’re happy to support it at least.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 30 2020, 08:22 PM

It's also definitely a less polarising song than DM.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jan 30 2020, 08:23 PM

I do wonder if Tune of the Week is a genuine choice by the DJs though. I’d like to think it is which would then mean it shouldn’t influence playlist adds

I think they are. There are times where a presenter will have a TOTW that won’t get playlisted. Plus you can see Clara will most often than not have an urban track whilst Scott will go for a cheesy pop song or dance track.

5/7, basically the same as last week, quite pleased with that. I really wasn’t as sure as I was last week so I’m pleased that I got that many.

Playlist predictions:
• Anne-Marie - Birthday
• Declan McKenna - Beautiful Faces
• Lil Nas X (Feat. Nas) - Rodeo
• JP Saxe (Feat. Julia Michaels) - If the world was ending
• Mac Miller - Blue World
• Joel Corry - Lonely
• DaBaby - BOP
• MK - One Night

Posted by: M4NGO Feb 6 2020, 09:46 PM

Hope they insta-add Anne-Marie but they might wait a week or two. Hope they add Declan too although they didn't playlist 'British Bombs' (not sure if that was an official single though). I'd say Joel Corry is a dead cert to be added tomorrow.

Posted by: JosephStyles Feb 6 2020, 09:47 PM

British Bombs wasn't an official single!

I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if they didn't think Anne-Marie was worthy of an instant add, she had a really big debut era after all and this is her first release as lead artist since that!

Posted by: Bjork Feb 7 2020, 07:46 AM

think the JP Saxe/Julia Michaels song is too much R2 territory, sadly cos it's an amazing track, my #1 this year
sure Anne Marie is insta-added, lately they're adding anyone, people much less popular than Anne Marie

Posted by: Steve201 Feb 7 2020, 08:12 AM

Yeh JP Saxe is a decent track, hopefully radio 2 will take a punt or it becomes a hit and they have no choice!

Posted by: Steve201 Feb 7 2020, 08:17 AM

Just the instant B-List add for Anne-Marie Bjork will be glad to hear!

Also Bieber only C-Listed And Slipknot Record of the weekend!

Posted by: lewistgreen Feb 10 2020, 07:32 PM

Tune of the Week: 10th-13th February 2020

Adele Roberts: Martin Solveig & Roy Woods - Juliet & Romeo
Greg James: L Devine - Boring People
Clara Amfo: Khalid x Disclosure - Know Your Worth
Scott Mills: Joel Corry - Lonely
Nick Grimshaw: Gorillaz feat. slowthai & Slaves - Momentary Bliss
