Top 40 Chart Commentary

• Avicii sits on top with 'Heaven' for a record-breaking 14th week, overtaking his own 'Lonely Together' (13 weeks) to become the longest running #1 of all time in Thermo's hot hits. Amazingly he is still yet to depart the #1 spot from since 'SOS' was released.

• It is not without competition however as Jax Jones' new single 'This Is Real' enters straight in at #2. It becomes his 8th top 10 hit and third to break the top three, following his most successful track 'You Don't Know Me' (#2 for 4 weeks) as well as his sole #1 (for 2 weeks) 'Instruction'. It comes alongside the full release of the album 'Snacks', which also sends the album tracks '100 Times', 'Cruel' and 'All 4 U' into the top 40 and gives 'Jacques' a boost to #23. 'All Day And Night' continues its top 40 run, giving him six hits currently top 40 this week. Jax is now the owner of 15 hits overall (including 13 of the 15 tracks on 'Snacks' as well as 'I Got U' and 'Yeah Yeah Yeah').

• 'This Is Real' features Ella Henderson who hasn't been seen since 2015 so serves as a great comeback for her. It is her 5th hit (2nd top 10 hit and all peaked in the top 20), including the #1 'Ghost' (helped by the Oliver Nelson remix, but I also enjoy the original).

• Don Diablo gets an instant top 10 hit with new release 'Never Change', helped by its sample of 2Pac 'Changes' (itself sampling Bruce Hornsby 'The Way It Is'). It enters at #9 giving him a ninth hit; also his second top 10 (his first was 'Back In Time', a #8 hit in 2014).

• Ben Gold has had a great year, getting four top 20 hits as part of Futurecode. He now enters at #17 on his own (with an uncredited vocalist) with new single 'The City Sleeps Tonight', his second hit outside of Futurecode following 'Stay', a #17 hit last year.

• Whilst Grimes has been active for a while since, her 2014 hit 'Go' remained her only hit (peaking at #2) for five years. She is now back with the help of I_o as 'Violence' enters at #18. It is also the second hit for I_o though he didn't have to wait as long, his first hit being 'Let Me Go' which reached #14 a few months ago.

• Yves V continues his pattern of getting one hit a year starting from 2017 as 'We Got That Cool' climbs in at #24, following 2017's 'Daylight (With You)' (#17) and last year's 'Something Like' (#36). He also brings two acts back to the chart who haven't appeared in years. Afrojack was last seen in 2016 and now gets his 13th hit; Icona Pop have laid dormant since 2013(!) and now finally have a third hit ('I Love It' peaked at #4; 'All Night' at #27).

• This week is all about comebacks and we have another at #33. Sam Feldt was last seen in 2016 (he had been releasing consistently since but made no impact) but his 2nd UK hit 'Post Malone' finally breaks the top 40 here to give him a 5th hit.

• Finally we have two newcomers to the top 40. Dom Dolla climbs to #35 with 'Take It' and Tones and I leaps to #36 with 'Dance Monkey'.
