Got to Be Certain: Week 1
And one place below Liverpool FC is Kylie Minogue who herself jets in 15-4 (38,000) with her second single “Got To Be Certain” the follow up to the song that remains thus far the biggest seller of the year “I Should Be So Lucky”. Naturally it comes from the hands of S/A/W who originally gave this song to Mandy Smith to record but it seems to have ended up with Kylie, they are currently writing songs her debut album due in the summer sometime.

1- WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS/ SHE’S LEAVING HOME- Wet, wet, wet/
Billy Bragg & Cara Tivey (67,000)
2- PERFECT- Fairground Attraction (64,000)
3- ANFIELD RAP (RED MACHINE IN FULL EFFECT)- Liverpool FC (44,000)
4- GOT TO BE CERTAIN- Kylie Minogue (38,000)
5- BLUE MONDAY 88- New Order (37,000)
6- LOADSAMONEY (DOIN UP THE HOUSE)- Harry Enfield (32,000)
7- THEME FROM S EXPRESS- S Express (32,000)
8- DIVINE EMOTIONS- Narada (24,000)
9- I WANT YOU BACK- Bananarama (20,000)
10- MARY’S PRAYER- Danny Wilson (19,000)

Got to Be Certain: Week 2
With a little help from the UK Public sales of “With A Little Help From My Friends” explode at retail selling 126,000 copies, that’s an increase of 89% and that’s a new 1988 record! That’s also bad news for Kylie Minogue who climbs 4-2 (52,000) but didn’t even sell half of the Wets, indeed she was very lucky to overtake Fairground Attraction only doing it at the very last moment. “Perfect” sold 51,000 as it slipped 2-3, their album “First Of A Million Kisses” arrives at No 7 this week which would also have helped Kylie to steal the runner up spot.

1- WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS/ SHE’S LEAVING HOME- Wet, wet, wet/
Billy Bragg & Cara Tivey (126,000)
2- GOT TO BE CERTAIN- Kylie Minogue (52,000)
3- PERFECT- Fairground Attraction (51,000)
4- ANFIELD RAP (RED MACHINE IN FULL EFFECT)- Liverpool FC (36,000)
5- BLUE MONDAY 88- New Order (31,000)
6- CIRCLE IN THE SAND- Belinda Carlisle (27,000)
7- THE KING OF ROCK N ROLL- Prefab Sprout (25,000)
8- SOMEWHERE IN MY HEART- Aztec Camera (24,000)
9- DIVINE EMOTIONS- Narada (22,000)
10- THEME FROM S EXPRESS- S Express (22,000)

Got to Be Certain: Week 3
After last week’s flurry of sales perhaps predictably Wet Wet Wet/ Billy Bragg can’t maintain the pace, although the scale of the reverse, some 29%, might hint that the tenure of “With A Little Help From My Friends/ She’s Leaving Home” might not be that long. The song sold 89,000 last week to bring its haul to 309,000 after four weeks and is already the 4th biggest hit of 1988 but it’s a long way off “I Should Be So Lucky” which is really the only bit of good news for Kylie who is left high and dry at No 2 for a second week, her sales actually slightly down at 45,000, again it fought a tough battle with Fairground Attraction with the two changing places on a daily basis, “Perfect” sold a respectable 44,000 copies.

1- WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS/ SHE’S LEAVING HOME- Wet, wet, wet/
Billy Bragg & Cara Tivey (89,000)
2- GOT TO BE CERTAIN- Kylie Minogue (45,000)
3- PERFECT- Fairground Attraction (44,000)
4- CIRCLE IN THE SAND- Belinda Carlisle (35,000)
5- SOMEWHERE IN MY HEART- Aztec Camera (34,000)
6- CHECK THIS OUT- LA Mix (31,000)
7- THE KING OF ROCK N ROLL- Prefab Sprout (29,000)
8- MY ONE TEMPTATION- Mica Paris (24,000)
9- BLUE MONDAY 88- New Order (23,000)
10- LOVE WILL SAVE THE DAY- Whitney Houston (20,000)

Got to Be Certain: Week 4
Last week the Childline record “With A Little Help From My Friends” triumphed by a whopping 44,000 copies, this week it was just 4,000 with a brave Kylie clinging on for a third week in the runner up spot and actually managing to outsell the Wets on some days through the week, the Glasgow boys running out 46,000 to 42,000 winners.

1- WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS/ SHE’S LEAVING HOME- Wet, wet, wet/
Billy Bragg & Cara Tivey (46,000)
2- GOT TO BE CERTAIN- Kylie Minogue (42,000)
3- SOMEWHERE IN MY HEART- Aztec Camera (36,000)
4- DOCTORIN THE TARDIS- The Timelords (30,000)
5- VOYAGE VOYAGE (REMIX)- Desireless (29,000)
6- CIRCLE IN THE SAND- Belinda Carlisle (29,000)
7- MY ONE TEMPTATION- Mica Paris (27,000)
8- I SAW HIM STANDING THERE- Tiffany (24,000)
9- CHECK THIS OUT- LA Mix (24,000)
10- PERFECT- Fairground Attraction (23,000)

Got to Be Certain: Week 5
Elsewhere Desireless hold at No 5 (31,000) but it’s bad news for Kylie who slides 2-6 (30,000), Aztec Camera who tumble 3-8 (25,000) and Tiffany who reverses 8-10 (21,000).

1- DOCTORIN IN THE TARDIS- The Timelords (45,000)
2- I OWE YOU NOTHING- Bros (37,000)
3- WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS/ SHE’S LEAVING HOME- Wet, wet, wet
Billy Bragg & Cara Tivey (34,000)
4- BOYS (SUMMERTIME LOVE)- Sabrina (34,000)
5- VOYAGE VOYAGE (REMIX)- Desireless (31,000)
6- GOT TO BE CERTAIN- Kylie Minogue (30,000)
7- WILD WORLD- Maxi Priest (26,000)
8- SOMEWHERE IN MY HEART- Aztec Camera (25,000)
9- EVERYDAY IS LIKE SUNDAY- Morrissey (23,000)
10- I SAW HIM STANDING THERE- Tiffany (21,000)

The Loco-motion: Week 1
That highest new entry becomes the highest debut by a female solo act ever in chart history overtaking Madonna’s “Who’s That Girl” which went in at No 3 last year, yes Kylie Minogue is doubtless celebrating tonight as a remixed version of her debut Australian single “The Loco-motion” comes straight in at No 2 after selling 52,000 copies. It’s her third top 2 single giving her the best start to any chart career since Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1984 and is available (in an alternative version) on her debut album “Kylie” which peaked at No 2 four weeks ago. It’s the fourth version of the track to chart following in the footsteps of The Vernon Girls (No 47, 1962), Little Eva (No 2, 1962), and Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin (No 70, 1986) so Kylie has at least matched the peak of Little Eva, she also follows Bros in scoring a hat-trick of top 2 hits in 1988 though they of course needed re-issues to do the trick.

1- THE ONLY WAY IS UP- Yazz & The Plastic Population (54,000)
2- THE LOCO-MOTION- Kylie Minogue (52,000)
3- NOTHING’S GONNA CHANGE MY LOVE FOR YOU- Glenn Medeiros (44,000)
4- YOU CAME- Kim Wilde (34,000)
5- PUSH IT/ TRAMP- Salt N Pepa (28,000)
6- SUPERFLY GUY- S Express (26,000)
7- I NEED YOU- BVSMP (22,000)
8- I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT- Everything But The Girl (20,000)
9- I WANT YOUR LOVE- Transvision Vamp (20,000)
10- DIRTY DIANA- Michael Jackson (19,000)

The Loco-motion: Week 2
With sales exploding 82% week on week Yazz & The Plastic Population’s “The Only Way Is Up” secures a firm grip on the No 1 spot that looks hard to shake, so much so that even though she increases her own sales 53% Kylie Minogue drifts further away from Yazz though her album lifts 5-2 and so splits sales. The 79,000 copies that “Loco-Motion” sold would have been enough to be No 1 in 19 of the 31 weeks so far in 1988- but it’s all about the timing!

1- THE ONLY WAY IS UP- Yazz & The Plastic Population (88,000)
2- THE LOCO-MOTION- Kylie Minogue (79,000)
3- YOU CAME- Kim Wilde (47,000)
4- I NEED YOU- BVSMP (36,000)
5- SUPERFLY GUY- S Express (31,000)
6- THE EVIL THAT MEN DO- Iron Maiden (28,000)
7- NOTHING’S GONNA CHANGE MY LOVE FOR YOU- Glenn Medeiros (27,000)
8- FIND MY LOVE- Fairground Attraction (24,000)
9- PUSH IT/ TRAMP- Salt N Pepa (22,000)
10- I WANT YOUR LOVE- Transvision Vamp (17,000)

The Loco-motion: Week 3
The top 2 remain on lock down for a third week with Yazz & The Plastic Population claiming the top spot and still with increasing sales, it sold a new 1988 record of 157,000 copies to bring its total to 340,000 copies and should move seamlessly into the top 10 YTD next week, it’s increase week on week of 53% indicates it still has legs left. Kylie therefore plays runner up on both charts with her album nestled behind “Now 12” for a second week and the single “Loco-Motion” makes it three weeks lodged behind Yazz, the bad news is that she’s losing sales, the track sold 68,000 copies, though its total is now just shy of 200,000 copies, impressive for a third release of an album.

1- THE ONLY WAY IS UP- Yazz & The Plastic Population (157,000)
2- THE LOCO-MOTION- Kylie Minogue (68,000)
3- I NEED YOU- BVSMP (44,000)
4- YOU CAME- Kim Wilde (33,000)
5- THE EVIL THAT MEN DO- Iron Maiden (33,000)
6- HANDS TO HEAVEN- Breathe (31,000)
7- FIND MY LOVE- Fairground Attraction (28,000)
8- THE HARDER I TRY- Brother Beyond (23,000)
9- SUPERFLY GUY- S Express (22,000)
10- MARTHA’S HARBOUR- All About Eve (22,000)

The Loco-motion: Week 4
The top two are again proving intransigent at the top as they become the first two tracks to create such deadlock and for so many weeks since Wham! and Band Aid were locked in duel for 5 weeks in late 1984, both however are now in decline, Yazz & The Plastic population down 15% to 96,000 whilst Minogue loses 20% to 54,000, respective tallies of 425,000 and 253,000 prove it’s been a lucrative four week stasis though for both. “The Only Way Is Up” is already the 4th biggest single of 1988 and “The Loco-Motion” is easily in the top 20 for the year, meanwhile “Kylie” finally tops the album chart making her the youngest female act to ever do so at just 20. It’s also the first time in chart history that all three records in the top 3 start with the same word!

1- THE ONLY WAY IS UP- Yazz & The Plastic Population (96,000)
2- THE LOCO-MOTION- Kylie Minogue (54,000)
3- THE HARDER I TRY- Brother Beyond (34,000)
4- HANDS TO HEAVEN- Breathe (34,000)
5- I NEED YOU- BVSMP (32,000)
6- MY LOVE- Julio Iglesias & Stevie Wonder (31,000)
7- FIND MY LOVE- Fairground Attraction (23,000)
8- YOU CAME- Kim Wilde (21,000)
9- THE EVIL THAT MEN DO- Iron Maiden (18,000)
10- GOOD TRADITION- Tanita Tikaram (18,000)

The Loco-motion: Week 5
It’s now sold 486,000 copies in total as it easily hauls in a fifth week at the top despite a further 27% slump in sales to 61,000 copies, yes “The Only Way Is Up” is still the UK’s No 1 as it equals the longest run at the top for 1988, an honour it shares with “I Should Be So Lucky” by Kylie Minogue who she has of course held off the top spot for the last 4 weeks. “The Loco-Motion” finally gives up its valiant effort and slides 2-3 (38,000) to make way for another S/A/W creation, Brother Beyond’s “The Harder I Try” which nudges 3-2 (40,000) but is way behind Yazz and only overpowered Kylie at the death thanks to some TOTP exposure. “The Only Way Is Up” moves up into the top 5 on the YTD chart as it tries to catch….you guessed it, “I Should Be So Lucky” but realistically it should overtake that track within a few weeks.

1- THE ONLY WAY IS UP- Yazz & The Plastic Population (61,000)
2- THE HARDER I TRY- Brother Beyond (40,000)
3- THE LOCO-MOTION- Kylie Minogue (38,000)
4- HANDS TO HEAVEN- Breathe (37,000)
5- MY LOVE- Julio Iglesias & Stevie Wonder (35,000)
6- MEGABLAST/ DON’T MAKE ME WAIT- Bomb The Bass (31,000)
7- TEARDROPS- Womack & Womack (25,000)
8- I NEED YOU- BVSMP (24,000)
9- A GROOVY KIND OF LOVE- Phil Collins (23,000)
10- FIND MY LOVE- Fairground Attraction (17,000)

The Loco-motion: Week 6
Womack & Womack lift 7-4 (40,000) leaving Bomb The Bass stranded at No 6 (36,000), Julio Iglesias & Stevie Wonder fall back 5-7 (30,000), Kylie dives 3-9 (23,000) and Breathe drop 4-10 (23,000) and finally next week sees the release of a new Bros record- straight in at No 1?

1- A GROOVY KIND OF LOVE- Phil Collins (73,000)
2- THE HARDER I TRY- Brother Beyond (60,000)
3- THE ONLY WAY IS UP- Yazz & The Plastic Population (49,000)
4- TEARDROPS- Womack & Womack (40,000)
5- HE AIN’T HEAVY, HE’S MY BROTHER- The Hollies (39,000)
6- MEGABLAST/ DON’T MAKE ME WAIT- Bomb The Bass (36,000)
7- MY LOVE- Julio Iglesias & Stevie Wonder (30,000)
8- THE RACE- Yello (26,000)
9- THE LOCO-MOTION- Kylie Minogue (23,000)
10- HANDS TO HEAVEN- Breathe (23,000)

Je ne sais pas pourquoi: Week 1
That just leaves the track which this week vaults 11-2 (52,000) and it comes from the woman of the year Kylie Minogue, “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi” is a fourth cut from the singer’s debut album “Kylie” which has spent a month at No 1 already and is now well over the 800,000 and on track for the million before the end of 1988. The promo takes its cue from the famous picture “The Last Waltz on Bastille Day, 1945” by Rober Doisneau to give it a suitable Gallic flavour and comes with some critical acceptance for a change. Though not listed as such plans are that following in both Wham!’s and Rick Astley’s footsteps the single will be flipped and current B-Side “Made In Heaven” will be the main single when sales for this start to dwindle given that the latter track is a non album single. Seems to be doing just fine on its own at present but keep an eye on it- Kylie now has the best start to a career ever by a female vocalist with all four of her singles so far making the top 2 and only Gerry & The Pacemakers and Frankie Goes To Hollywood have ever had a brighter start in the charts.

1- ORINOCO FLOW (SAIL AWAY)- Enya (59,000)
2- JE NE SAIS PAS POURQUIO- Kylie Minogue (52,000)
3- ONE MOMENT IN TIME- Whitney Houston (51,000)
4- WE CALL IT ACIEED- D Mob Featuring Gary Haisman (44,000)
5- A LITTLE RESPECT- Erasure (42,000)
6- DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY- Bobby McFerrin (40,000)
7- WEE RULE- Wee Papa Girl Rappers (37,000)
8- HARVEST FOR THE WORLD- The Christians (35,000)
9- NEVER TRUST A STRANGER- Kim Wilde (31,000)
10- GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE- Milli Vanilli (27,000)

Je ne sais pas pourquoi: Week 2
An easy week at the top for Enya as she gets a firm grip on the top spot with 70,000 copies being purchased last week which along with the album’s rise 10-5 would indicate that she’s on a roll at present. She leaves Kylie eating dust as “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi” lingers on at No 2 (49,000) and must now be under threat from Milli Vanilli who trundle 10-3 (40,000) though Minogue will have TOTP to help her this week.

1- ORINOCO FLOW (SAIL AWAY)- Enya (70,000)
2- JE NE SAIS PAS POURQUOI- Kylie Minogue (49,000)
3- GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE- Milli Vanilli (40,000)
4- STAND UP FOR YOUR LOVE RIGHTS- Yazz (35,000)
5- KISS- Art Of Noise Featuring Tom Jones (34,000)
6- ONE MOMENT IN TIME- Whitney Houston (34,000)
7- WE CALL IT ACIEED- D Mob Featuring Gary Haisman (30,000)
8- SHE MAKES MY DAY- Robert Palmer (29,000)
9- WEE RULE- Wee Papa Girl Rappers (28,000)
10- A LITTLE RESPECT- Erasure (26,000)

Je ne sais pas pourquoi: Week 3
“Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)” starts to show signs that the tide is heading out, it clings to the top spot but only just, selling just 53,000 copies well under 500 copies ahead of Kylie Minogue’s “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi” and 3,000 ahead of Yazz’s “Stand Up For Your love Rights” which improves 4-3. It also marks the third time this year and third time EVER that the top 3 have been all female, Kylie being present on all three occasions. Interestingly the Enya track fails to top any of the individual format charts (7”, 12”, Cassette, or CD) with Kylie, Milli Vanilli, Pet Shop Boys, and Yazz taking those honours, its time must be up! Even Milli Vanilli shoot up sales wise 24% to 49,000 as they fall 3-4, they were the only act in the top 4 not to get TOTP expose and it could be argued that such an improvement without the aid of the show might have meant that with it the track could easily have been No 1 today, making next week anyone’s call.

1- ORINOCO FLOW (SAIL AWAY)- Enya (53,000)
2- JE NE SAIS PAS POURQUIO- Kylie Minogue (52,500)
3- STAND UP FOR YOUR LOVE RIGHTS- Yazz (50,000)
4- GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE- Milli Vanilli (49,000)
5- THE FIRST TIME- Robin Beck (38,000)
6- SHE MAKES MY DAY- Robert Palmer (35,000)
7- KISS- Art Of Noise Featuring Tom Jones (31,000)
8- HE AIN’T NO COMPETITION- Brother Beyond (28,000)
9- 1-2-3- Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine (26,000)
10- REAL GONE KID- Deacon Blue (23,000)

Je ne sais pas pourquoi: Week 4
Well after last week’s scramble for the top of the charts this was a relatively quiet week with a slim lead for Robin Beck turning into a relatively easy win for the singer in the end, she drove past the opposition 5-1 (49,000) with “First Time”, it means for a second time in 1988 and a second time EVER we have had three successive chart toppers from female soloists (Whitney Houston, Enya, and now Beck) and we also have a wholly female top 3 for the fourth time in history. It’s turned out to be something of a landmark year for the ladies finding domination for the first time since the inception of the charts 36 years ago. Runner up this week is Yazz who does climb 3-2 on paper but her sales are down 18% to 41,000 and Kylie tumbles 2-3 (39,000) but she can console herself with the fact that “Kylie” returns to No 1 on the album charts becoming the best selling album of the year, and “The Loco-Motion” currently sits at No 3 stateside. She also married last week, at least on screen at any rate, on “Neighbours” garnering a significant amount of press and viewing audience.

1- THE FIRST TIME- Robin Beck (49,000)
2- STAND UP FOR YOUR LOVE RIGHTS- Yazz (41,000)
3- JE NE SAIS PAS POURQUIO- Kylie Minogue (39,000)
4- NEED YOU TONIGHT- INXS (36,000)
5- ORINIOCO FLOW (SAIL AWAY)- Enya (36,000)
6- HE AIN’T NO COMPETITION- Brother Beyond (35,000)
7- GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE- Milli Vanilli (35,000)
8- MISSING YOU- Chris De Burgh (35,000)
9- SHE MAKES MY DAY- Robert Palmer (27,000)
10- REAL GONE KID- Deacon Blue (27,000)

Je ne sais pas pourquoi: Week 5
Well done to Deacon Blue who defy chart experts and rise 10-8 (29,000) after they stalled last week, but no joy for Yazz who tumbles 2-5 (33,000), Brother Beyond who slide 6-9 (27,000) and Kylie Minogue who dives 3-10 (25,000), incidentally Brother Beyond’s album “Get Even” debuts at only No 15, a far cry from the No 2 peak of “Push” and with a new Bros single out this week expect a new entry in the top 10 for them next week.

1- THE FIRST TIME- Robin Beck (80,000)
2- NEED YOU TONIGHT- INXS (37,000)
3- MISSING YOU- Chris De Burgh (33,000)
4- TWIST AND SHOUT- Salt N Pepa (33,000)
5- STAND UP FOR YOUR LOVE RIGHTS- Yazz (33,000)
6- THE CLAIRVOYANT- Iron Maiden (30,000)
7- LEFT TO MY OWN DEVICES- Pet Shop Boys (30,000)
8- REAL GONE KID- Deacon Blue (29,000)
9- HE AIN’T NO COMPETITION- Brother Beyond (27,000)
10- JE NE SAIS PAS POURQUIO- Kylie Minogue (25,000)

Especially for You: Week 1
So onto THAT duet, the dream team (in terms of 1988 at any rate) comes to fruition as after months of rumours “Especially For You” arrives at No 2 (62,000) to instantly become Donovan’s biggest hit in the UK. For Kylie of course it is her fourth No 2 hit in a row and by way of co-incidence she does get some revenge on Cliff as his album holds at No 3 this week one place behind “Kylie” which has now crossed the million mark, she has sold over 1.6 million singles, by far the biggest act of the year. Kylie & Jason remain the favourite with the bookies and the battle over the next three weeks will be an interesting one. Incidentally after 17 straight chart weeks last week was the first PWL/ S/A/W free top 10, a situation now rectified!

1-MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (132,000)
2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (62,000)
3- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (42,000)
4- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS- Bros (38,000)
5- THE FIRST TIME- Robin Beck (38,000)
6- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (37,000)
7- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (34,000)
8- TAKE ME TO YOUR HEART- Rick Astley (34,000)
9- SMOOTH CRIMINAL- Michael Jackson (32,000)
10- MISSING YOU- Chris De Burgh (30,000)

Especially for You: Week 2
Another week of extraordinary (by 1988 standards) sales for the top 3 as all three record new record weekly totals for the year, first up is Cliff Richard who manages to see off Kylie & Jason once again with “Mistletoe & Wine” posting a sale of 159,000 to bring the song’s three week tally to an incredible 321,000 copies which already places it in the YTD top 15, with three weeks of the year to go maybe Yazz should be worried about grabbing the biggest hit of the year? It’s just the 9th week in 1988 when sales of the No 1 have exceeded the golden 100,000 mark, by comparison there were 35 weeks in both 1981 and 1982 when a six digit tally was recorded for the chart topper. Kylie & Jason meanwhile performed live on TOTP and “Des O’Connor Tonight” and they see sales of “Especially For You” improve by 110% to a mighty 130,000 copies, enough for the No 1 spot in all but four weeks of the year, sadly this is not one of those weeks!, however if it keeps the momentum then it should overturn “Mistletoe & Wine” next week. As for Angry Anderson he holds at No 3 in all static top 3 with sales of 67,000, they are all so far ahead of the field that it’s hard to see anyone catching them by Christmas at least. On the album charts Cliff and Kylie swap positions as Cliff moves into the No 2 spot selling 140,000 copies into the bargain but both remain behind “Now 13”.

1- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (159,000)
2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (130,000)
3- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (67,000)
4- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (38,000)
5- CAT AMOUNG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (34,000)
6- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (28,000)
7- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (28,000)
8- TAKE ME TO YOUR HEART- Rick Astley (27,000)
9- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (27,000)
10- ANGEL OF HARLEM- U2 (24,000)

Especially for You: Week 3
The Cliff/ Kylie & Jason stranglehold on the top 2 continues with both tracks shifting over 100,000 copies to remain more than double ahead of the rest of the field. Cliff now looks certain to become the festive No 1 after selling a new 1988 record of 169,000 copies last week, that’s 490,000 copies to date placing at No 6 on the YTD with 2 weeks of the year left- it’s going to be tight as whether or not it can pass Yazz to become the year’s biggest seller. Cliff also has the double as “Private Collection” ascends to the top to give him a chart double for a third time in his career.

Meanwhile “Especially For You” spends a third week stuck behind “Mistletoe & Wine” selling another 109,000 copies, that’s a modest 16% decrease week on week but probably a decisive one as the far more overtly festive Cliff offering should sell by the bucket load next week taking in the full run up to the big day itself. Still 301,000 in 21 days is a prodigious rate of sales especially in 1988 and passes Jason Donovan’s “Nothing Can Divide Us” and Kylie’s “Got To Be Certain” and “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi” in terms of their personal best sellers.

1- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (169,000)
2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (109,000)
3- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (54,000)
4- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (53,000)
5- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (33,000)
6- CAT AMOUNG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (30,000)
7- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (29,000)
8- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (24,000)
9- ANGEL OF HARLEM- U2 (24,000)
10- DOWNTOWN 88- Petula Clark (24,000)

Especially for You: Week 4
So the big day arrives and somewhat bizarrely the Christmas Chart wasn’t revealed until Boxing Day but no matter for Cliff Richard who is celebrating both the festive No 1 single and album this week in a complete domination of the field. “Mistletoe & Wine” sold a simply astonishing 211,000 copies last week, the first single to break the 200,000 mark since Band Aid back in 1984 and it brings the song’s total to 701,000 as it passes Yazz’s “The Only Way Is Up” as the year’s best seller inching past on Christmas Eve.

In the end the victory was relatively convincing for Richard, Kylie & Jason spend a fourth week at the runner up spot but they are back to increasing to their sales by 72% in fact to 187,000 to see “Especially For You” chase “Mistletoe & Wine” through the YTD chart with 488,000 copies to date enough for No 7 on that list.

1- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (211,000)
2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (187,000)
3- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (78,000)
4- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (75,000)
5- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (54,000)
6- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (45,000)
7- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (41,000)
8- CAT AMOUNG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (39,000)
9- LOCO IN ACAPULCO- The Four Tops (37,000)
10- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (32,000)

Especially for You: Week 5
As expected the final week of 1988 proves to be particularly savage on sales with Christmas sales all jammed into one week in effect, almost everything in the top 10 slides saleswise with some spectacularly bad percentages coming into play. First up the good news, even with a 64% loss “Especially For You” rises 2-1 to finally hit the top and give Jason his first chart topper, Kylie her second, and S/A/W’s 6th as producers, it sold 66,000 copies to have a relatively easy victory in the end though they will doubtless be sad to miss out on the big one! Erasure are playing bridesmaid’s this week with “Crackers International EP” buoyed 3-2 (53,000 a 31% drop in sales, and Angry Anderson proving sticking power with “Suddenly” refloating 4-3 (52,000 – 30%).

1- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (66,000)
2- THE CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (53,000)
3- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (52,000)
4- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (48,000)
5- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (36,000)
6- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (35,000)
7- LOCO IN ACAPULCO- The Four Tops (24,000)
8- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (22,000)
9- FOUR LETTER WORD- Kim Wilde (21,000)
10- CAT AMOUNG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (20,000)

Especially for You: Week 6
1989 starts off quietly with not much to report at the top of the charts, Kylie & Jason continue to remain the nation’s sweethearts, “Especially For You” selling another 69,000 copies as they increase sales from last week and cross the 600,000 mark. It should become Kylie’s biggest seller by next week. Erasure are once again playing second fiddle with “Crackers International EP” lying in wait and selling 54,000 as it becomes just the second track by the duo to sell over 300,000 copies (311,000 to be exact), only their debut Top 40 smash “Sometimes” remains ahead it’s total sales a fraction over 400,000, full revenge is gained on the album charts though as “The Innocents” bounds 10-1 as “Kylie” holds at No 2. Neneh Cherry rises 6-3 (42,000) and could yet prove a surprise chart topper should the top 2 slip.

1- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (69,000)
2- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (54,000)
3- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (42,000)
4- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (34,000)

9- ALL SHE WANTS IS- Duran Duran (19,000)
10- BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY/ FREEBIRD- Will To Power (17,000)

Especially for You: Week 7
Not many predicted that “Especially For You” still had legs on it but it is still the UK’s No 1 single and is increasing in sales to 73,000 this week, it now tops the 696,000 mark to become Kylie’s best seller and the second biggest S/A/W produced track with only “Never Gonna Give You Up” ahead of it, though it is well ahead at 811,000 copies sold thus far.

1- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (73,000)
2- CRACKERS INTERATIONAL EP- Erasure (54,000)
3- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (44,000)
4- THE LIVING YEARS- Mike & The Mechanics (40,000)

8- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (27,000)
9- WAITING FOR A STAR TO FALL- Boy Meets Girl (25,000)
10- SOMETHING’S GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART- Marc Almond & Gene Pitney (21,000)

Especially for You: Week 8
The nation does have a new number one, in fact through the week three different songs all topped the charts with “Especially For You” giving way to “The Living Years” by Thursday then, in the end, Marc Almond & Gene Pitney came out on top by a narrow margin thanks to a performance on “Wogan” which saw the track become the biggest seller on Thursday, Friday and Saturday by some margin. Kylie & Jason drop 1-3 (57,000) and have now sold 753,000 copies in total and should, at some point, become S/A/W’s biggest seller over the next few months. It was surpassed by “The Living Years” which still climbs 4-2 (64,000) but was 2,000 short of Almond & Pitney in the end count, Almond thusly becomes the second act after George Michael to top the charts with two different duetting partners if one counts Dave Ball of Soft Cell, for Pitney his wait of 28 years from debut to first No 1 hit is dwarfed only by Jackie Wilson’s 29 year wait in 1986.

1- SOMETHING’S GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART- Marc Almond & Gene Pitney (66,000)
2- THE LIVING YEARS- Mike & The Mechanics (64,000)
3- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (57,000)
4- YOU GOT IT- Roy Orbison (53,000)
5- SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY- Fine Young Cannibals (41,000)
6- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (36,000)
7- CUDDLY TOY- Roachford (34,000)
8- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (28,000)
9- BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY- Will To Power (27,000)
10- LOVE TRAIN- Holly Johnson (27,000)

Especially for You: Week 9
Fine Young Cannibals slip 5-6 (37,000), Kylie & Jason fall even harder 3-6 (37,000) and will sell its 800,000th copy this week, finally Erasure continue to descend 6-9 (28,000).

1- SOMETHING’S GOTTEN HOLD OF MY HEART- Marc Almond & Gene Pitney (104,000)
2- THE LIVING YEARS- Mike & The Mechanics (69,000)
3- YOU GOT IT- Roy Orbison (62,000)
4- CUDDLY TOY- Roachford (49,000)
5- LOVE TRAIN- Holly Johnson (39,000)
6- SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY- Fine Young Cannibals (37,000)
7- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (36,000)
8- THAT’S THE WAY LOVE IS- 10 City (30,000)
9- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (28,000)
10- WAIT- Robert Howard & Kym Mazelle (26,000)

They’re from Haven forums, don’t think the retro forum was made when Gezza was posting the 80s stuff.

Hand On Your Heart: Week 1

So onto the new Kylie Minogue single which was originally going to be “It’s No Secret” until the success of “Especially For You” put the single back so long that S/A/W had composed a new ditty for Minogue, that single was “Hand On Your Heart” and so instead of a fifth single from “Kylie” we get the lead single from her second album. It becomes the third single from a female soloists to debut at No 2 after selling 67,000 copies but it had 11,000 sales discounted for chart purposes- why? Because PWL put the cassingle at £1.99 retail price, lower than current BPI rules permit and so these “sales” were lost which cost PWL and Minogue the opportunity to become record breakers. BPI are currently relooking at Cassette single prices and reducing them in a bid to boost sales of the format so it may be a matter of bad timing but PWL certainly should have known what it was doing when it priced the format up or it was just an oversight, either way it’s cost them the top spot. It has resulted in one other change, in an attempt to give the single a chance at No 1 this Sunday the S/A/W produced “Ferry Cross The Mersey” in aid of the Hillsborough disaster has been put back a week!

1- ETERNAL FLAME- The Bangles (69,000)
2- HAND ON YOUR HEART- Kylie Minogue (67,400)
3- IF YOU DON’T KNOW ME BY NOW- Simply Red (39,000)
4- BABY I DON’T CARE- Transvision Vamp (34,000)
5- REQUIEM- London Boys (31,000)
6- AMERICANOS- Holly Johnson (29,000)
7- MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY- Natalie Cole (27,000)
8- WHO’S IN THE HOUSE- Beatmasters Featuring Merlin (27,000)
9- BEDS ARE BURNING- Midnight Oil (22,000)
10- GOOD THING- Fine Young Cannibals (21,000)

Hand On Your Heart: Week 2

S/A/W may have lost out in the album charts as Simple Minds beat Jason Donovan to the top spot but on the singles chart they reign supreme with their third No 1 of 1989 and also Kylie’s third No 1 with “Hand On Your Heart” marching 2-1 (103,000). It’s just the second time in 1989 that the No 1 track has broken the 100,000 mark and is evidence that the Minogue phenomenon continues with the song selling almost double that of the outgoing chart topper from the Bangles which falls 1-2 (53,000) as it becomes their best seller of their career.

1- HAND ON YOUR HEART- Kylie Minogue (103,000)
2- ETERNAL FLAME- The Bangles (53,000)
3- I WANT IT ALL- Queen (44,000)
4- REQUIEM- London Boys (42,000)
5- MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY- Natalie Cole (35,000)
6- BEDS ARE BURNING- Midnight Oil (30,000)
7- BRING ME EDELWEISS- Edelweiss (26,000)
8- I’M EVERY WOMAN (REMIX)- Chaka Khan (23,000)
9- BABY I DON’T CARE- Transvision Vamp (23,000)
10- AMERICANOS- Holly Johnson (21,000)

Hand On Your Heart: Week 3

The events of 15th April 1989 at Hillsborough are, by now, well documented, but the death of 95 people at the FA Cup Semi Final involving Nottingham Forest and Liverpool saw many of the leading artists from Liverpool club together and record a new version of “Ferry Cross The Mersey” which this week enters the chart at No 1 as expected. Paul McCartney, The Christians, Holly Johnson, and Gerry Marsden have been brought together by Stock Aitken & Waterman for the new version of the Gerry & The Pacemakers track which made No 8 back in 1965. It was written for the film of the same name which was their version of the Beatles “A Hard Day’s Night”, a musical which showcased the bands work, it also became the group’s final top 10 single. Apparently production in several plants was switched from Kylie Minogue’s “Hand On Your Heart” to this track to ensure that it made the top and to enable the alleged 500,000 shipment figure to be met, in truth it wasn’t required as the song enters the chart at the top after selling 103,000 against Kylie’s 83,000, she dips 1-2, it’s the second time that S/A/W have produced successive No 1’s after turning the trick back in March 1987 when Ferry Aid succeeded Mel & Kim, and indeed this is the first time a song has entered at No 1 since that Ferry Aid record. It’s S/A/W’s ninth No 1 produced track and their 4th thus far in 1989 and to celebrate they do a clean sweep with Jason Donovan’s “Ten Good Reasons” making the top spot on the album charts. The last non charity track to debut at No 1? That was Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Two Tribes” almost 5 years ago which of course featured Holly Johnson who can now claim involvement in 4 chart toppers, for The Christians it is a first, for Marsden a fifth and for McCartney a 23rd! It is also the first time in chart history that there has been at least one new entry in the top 3 for 3 consecutive weeks.

1- FERRY ‘CROSS THE MERSEY- Paul McCartney/ Gerry Marsden/ Holly Johnson/ The Christians/ Stock, Aitken & Waterman (103,000)
2- HAND ON YOUR HEART- Kylie Minogue (83,000)
3- MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY- Natalie Cole (55,000)
4- REQUIEM- London Boys (54,000)
5- I WANT IT ALL- Queen (45,000)
6- BRING ME EDELWEISS- Edelweiss (36,000)
7- ETERNAL FLAME- The Bangles (35,000)
8- I’M EVERY WOMAN (REMIX)- Chaka Khan (28,000)
9- BEDS ARE BURNING- Midnight Oil (26,000)
10- THE LOOK- Roxette (24,000)

Hand On Your Heart: Week 4

Scouse Aid (as it’s become colloquially known) spends a second week at No 1 shifting a further 96,000 copies last week and can be considered to be selling at a good pace for 1989 and may even be able to crack the YTD update next week, Kylie is again the nearest challenger but she herself loses 19% in sales terms dropping to 67,000 though she has sold 320,000 copies in her first month.

1- FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY- Paul McCartney/ Gerry Marsden/ Holly Johnson/ The Christians/ Stock, Aitken & Waterman (96,000)
2- HAND ON YOUR HEART- Kylie Minogue (67,000)
3- MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY- Natalie Cole (45,000)
4- REQUIEM- London Boys (44,000)
5- BRING ME EDELWEISS- Edelweiss (32,000)
6- EVERY LITTLE STEP- Bobby Brown (31,000)
7- THE LOOK- Roxette (30,000)
8- MANCHILD- Neneh Cherry (29,000)
9- I WANT IT ALL- Queen (29,000)
10- I’M EVERY WOMAN (REMIX)- Chaka Khan (25,000)

Hand On Your Heart: Week 5

Neneh Cherry powers 8-5 (34,000) but the rest are all fallers including Kylie 2-4 (41,000), The London Boys 4-6 (30,000), Edelweiss 5-8 (28,000) and Bobby Brown 6-9 (28,000)

1- FERRY CROSS THE MERSEY- Paul McCartney/ Gerry Marsden/ Holly Johnson/ The Christians/ Stock, Aitken & Waterman (66,000)
2- MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY- Natalie Cole (47,000)
3- ON THE INSIDE (THEME FROM PRISONER CELL BLOCK H)- Lynne Hamilton (43,000)

Wouldn't Change a Thing: Week 1

So onto Kylie then, again she lost a midweek lead for the third time in her short career, and for a third time she debuts at No 2 which along with Madonna makes her a record holder in terms of high debuts by female soloists. “Wouldn’t Change A Thing” will probably have considerably more trouble overcoming Jive Bunny which is a new chart topper than “Hand On Your Heart” had displacing the then 4 week No 1 “Eternal Flame” back in May though it got off to a better start in terms of eligible sales shifting 72,000 in its first week that’s the best start to any Kylie single ever!

1- SWING THE MOOD- Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers (88,000)
2- WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING- Kylie Minogue (72,000)
3- YOU’LL NEVER STOP ME LOVING YOU- Sonia (52,000)
4- TOO MUCH- Bros (48,000)
5- FRENCH KISS- Lil Louis (42,000)
6- DON’T WANNA LOSE YOU- Gloria Estefan (37,000)
7- ON OUR OWN- Bobby Brown (34,000)
8- LONDON NIGHTS- London Boys (31,000)
9- AIN’T NOBODY (REMIX)- Chaka Khan & Rufus (24,000)
10- WIND BENEATH MY WINGS- Bette Midler (22,000)

Wouldn't Change a Thing: Week 2

Experiencing a sales increase of 55% Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers “Swing The Mood” explodes at retail finishing with a tally of 136,000 the biggest total of the year so far, who says there has to be a summer sales slump? Kylie Minogue locks into the No 2 slot with a sales increase herself of 31% to 94,000 itself a record for the runner up slot in 1989 and enough for No 1 in all but 5 weeks of the year- sadly this is one of them. Lil Louis completes the top 3 moving 5-3 (51,000) in part thanks to the release of the 7” inch version of the single.

1- SWING THE MOOD- Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers (136,000)
2- WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING- Kylie Minogue (94,000)
3- FRENCH KISS- Lil Louis (51,000)
4- YOU’LL NEVER STOP ME LOVING YOU- Sonia (39,000)
5- POISON- Alice Cooper (35,000)
6- DON’T WANNA LOSE YOU- Gloria Estefan (34,000)
7- TOO MUCH- Bros (34,000)
8- ON OUR OWN- Bobby Brown (28,000)
9- TOY SOLDIERS- Martika (25,000)
10- AIN’T NOBODY (REMIX)- Chaka Khan & Rufus (21,000)

Wouldn't Change a Thing: Week 3

Not happy with Bros? So over Brother Beyond? Well making a bid for the boyband crown are Big Fun, three lads from the UK who are the newest act in the S/A/W catalogue to have a hit, originally their first release was a cover of the Carole King track “I Feel The Earth Move” which was circulated as a promo without much interest from radio causing it to be pulled and instead their version of Mick Jackson’s 1978 No 15 hit marks their debut. It was originally written in 1976 with the intention of offering it to Stevie Wonder but “Blame It On The Boogie” was snapped up by the Jacksons with their version plus Mick Jackson’s own version charting simultaneously in the charts, The Jacksons version came off best making No 8. 11 years later and the Big Fun version cruises 25-8 (29,000) to equal the peak achieved by the Jacksons, S/A/W’s other current top 10 hits are however falling, Kylie down 2-3 (58,000) and Sonia dropping 4-10 (24,000).

1- SWING THE MOOD- Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers (154,000)
2- FRENCH KISS- Lil Louis (59,000)
3- WOULDN’T CHANGE A THING- Kylie Minogue (58,000)
4- POISON- Alice Cooper (40,000)
5- TOY SOLDIERS- Martika (36,000)
6- LOSING MY MIND- Liza Minelli (34,000)
7- YOU’RE HISTORY- Shakespears Sister (31,000)
8- BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE- Big Fun (29,000)
9- DON’T WANNA LOSE YOU- Gloria Estefan (29,000)

Never Too Late: Week 1

Her second album “Enjoy Yourself” topped the charts 4 weeks ago and hasn’t left the top 3 yet so there’s little reason to suspect that the Kylie bubble has burst just yet but certainly on the surface the No 17 debut last week of “Never Too Late” caused alarm to some in the press. The truth of course is that it is easily explained, the single was available only on 12” and CD but not on 7” single owing to a factory mix up, the 7” inch is still the preferred format for younger fans of music and certainly for those who ply their trade in the out and out pop field of music hence it found the going tough. This week however all formats are available and the single duly thrusts 17-4 (36,000) however given PWL’s mishandling of “Hand On Your Hand” earlier in the year it does seem they need a tighter rein on the handling of formats of their biggest star. If the single progresses no further then they only have themselves to blame, however no act has ever placed their first 8 hits in the top 5 so she is already a record holder.

1- ALL AROUND THE WORLD- Lisa Stansfield (63,000)
2- GIRL I’M GONNA MISS YOU- Milli Vanilli (44,000)
3- THAT’S WHAT I LIKE- Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers (43,000)
4- NEVER TOO LATE- Kylie Minogue (36,000)
5- STREET TUFF- Double Trouble Featuring Rebel MC (34,000)
6- ROOM IN YOUR HEART- Living In A Box (34,000)
7- I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE- Martika (32,000)
8- ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE- Phil Collins (28,000)
9- LEAVE A LIGHT ON- Belinda Carlisle (28,000)
10- IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME- Cher (27,000)

Never Too Late: Week 2

Kylie holds at No 4 (39,000) and looks unlikely to progress meaning that “Never Too Late” is set to become her smallest hit ever though “Enjoy Yourself” is back at No 2 this week, and Milli Vanilli finally give up the chase dropping 2-5 (34,000). Martika is held up at No 7 (30,000) as Jive Bunny fall 3-8 (29,000) and Double Trouble are down and out 5-10 (26,000).

1- ALL AROUND THE WORLD- Lisa Stansfield (75,000)
2- ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE- Phil Collins (43,000)

9- GRAND PIANO- Mixmaster (27,000)
10- STREET TUFF- Double Trouble Featuring Rebel MC (26,000)

Never Too Late: Week 3

Kylie dips 4-5 (31,000), Milli Vanilli slump 5-8 (25,000), Martika finally eases 7-9 (23,000) and Mixmaster ebb 9-10 (21,000).

Very interesting sales. I wonder whether Kylie would have reached no1 with hand on your heart if ferry across the Mersey hadn’t been delayed by one week? Both tracks sold 103k in their first week at no1.

If there wasn't a mix up with the 7inch I wonder where never too late would have charted on week 1. Wouldn't change a thing was a midweek number 1 which I didnt know before.
