Just browsing through some of the old archive charts on the OCC website and thinking about my favourite/most unexpected chart weeks. I know most peoplem here follow the singles chart more but I've always found the album chart to throw up some fantastic surprises!
For example when The Corrs were No.1 with Talk On Corners, holding off their own debut album Forgiven Not Forgotten at No.2 But in more recent years, Scooter somehow getting a No.1 album and knocking off Madonna after one week was pretty iconic! And to see Steps at No.1 in 2011 was utterly bizarre! So I guess as chart fans we all have favourite chart weeks, for one reason or another, be them iconic battles (Oasis vs Blur/Spiller vs Sophie), weeks with tons of huge songs out (like the week in late 2004 when every huge US star released a single on the same week) or weeks where every song in the top five is a massive hit/future classic (hi March 2001/last summer), so what charts did others particularly enjoy, and for what reasons? |

Week-ending 3rd April 1999 is the best chart ever ever ever EVER. It holds a special significance for me as it coincides with getting 'The Box' music channel that Easter and absolutely falling in love with every single song in the chart. You've got mega-nostalgic manufactured kid-pop that ten-year-old me loved, all time post-Britpop classics, some stonking trance tunes...and Aphex Twin's 'Windowlicker' which is still to this day impossible to categorise in anything!

I still can't believe Bleeding Love and Rule The World were released on the same week. Both deserved No.1 status and had absolutely monster sales for the time. Rule The World would have smashed the competition away on almost any other week that year!

In terms of weeks where every song at the top was a favourite of mine, these are my favourites:
http://www.officialcharts.com/archive-chart/_/1/1999-10-23/ Genie In A Bottle, 2 Times, Don't Stop and Blue (Da Ba Dee) Was pretty partial to the Steps and Honeyz new entries in the top ten too! And then this was perfection: http://www.officialcharts.com/archive-chart/_/1/2006-07-22/ That top six (yes even Sandi Thom)! Smile, Hips and Voodoo Child were three of my five favourite songs of 2006 so to see that top three was incredible. |

In terms of memories, I remember the Christmas 2007 chart playing on the radio from the way home in the dark <3
Since then, early 2011 for great songs and summer 2013 for future classics. |

This week was very iconic:
http://www.officialcharts.com/archive-chart/_/1/2012-06-09/ features Loreen getting a surprise post-Eurovision top 3 smash, Rudimental getting a surprise #1 hit which turned out to one of the biggest hits of the year/decade. Plus Gary Barlow under performing (well, that was until he had an hour long advert for it on BBC and it went to #1 the following week ) as well as Alexandra Burke's most floppy single to date which she still hasn't followed up. I'd love to have another chart like that. |

In terms of memories, I remember the Christmas 2007 chart playing on the radio from the way home in the dark <3 I have similar memories, just with Christmas 2009. I can remember Westlife's 'What About Now' had been playing, and I can remember arriving at home where I rushed to the radio to tune into Joe vs. Rage! The last decent race to Christmas #1 to be honest. I can't remember any other particular charts where I can say they were my favourite or that I was really excited for all the high new entries. The one Ultraviolence mention is pretty fab though - 'The Boy Does Nothing' and 'Womanizer' were definitely among my favourite songs from 2008. |

I loved late 2004 weeks where there'd be like up to 8 top 20 new entries a week, was such a good time for music!

Also credit to 9th June 2012 for this stupidly epic top 3:
1. Rudimental - Feel The Love 2. Fun. - We Are Young 3. Loreen - Euphoria EDIT, Ha, beaten to it This post has been edited by BillyH: 21st July 2014, 09:34 PM |

My favourite chart week would be the one in autumn '98..
Gym and Tonic toppled from no. 1 and down to 6th position ... and a brand new top 5 - 5 - Thank u - Alanis Morissette : First single post the juggernaut, which was Jagged Little Pill 4 - I just want to be loved - Culture Club : Long awaited comeback single 3 - Sweetest Thing - U2 : First single (albeit having being recorded many years before) after their 'Pop' era 2 - Outside - George Michael - Comeback single after that scandal 1 - Believe - Cher : No comments needed |

some of my favourites include these (all of these are during the time I actually started following the charts)-
~ Rage vs. Joe, probably the week i first gained some actual interest in the uk charts! ~ 'Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead' week. mainly for how bizarre it was <3 ~ and quite recently a certain week back in April this year: HIDEAWAY reaching #1 (<333), Shift K3Y getting a slight-surprise #3 hit, Tove Lo climbing into the top 10, Elyar Fox somehow missing the top 10, and also German Whip managing to go top 5 on iTunes was a little unexpected (+ Feel The Love week, as stated by others ^.^) |

I wonder how many of these were playlisted by ageist Radio 1, maybe even all of them (they've definitely become more ageist over time), although not sure if Culture Club were. |

My favourite chart weeks are probably RAGE vs Joe, when Bleeding Love went to #1, the battle between Joe Dolce and Ultravox Ultravox were robbed, and when The Human League went on to have the Xmas #1, and my all time fave Police track Message In A Bottle, not forgetting to mention a few Madonna tracks getting there, notably Into The Groove, Vogue, Live To Tell.

W/e 17/6/2006 was a good one - quite a few novelty football songs did well that week, and also there was a ding-dong battle for #1 (I believe the lead changed hands 3 times and there were only just over 200 copies in it in the end).
In terms of WTF-ery - I would have to nominate w/e 7/1/2006, as it was the first year of the post-Xmas gift card effect with a lot of old songs shooting back up in a way that was unprecedented at the time. |

Recent one for me.
The Olympics chart effect. The one where Kate Bush, John Lennon & Elbow all were within the heights of the top 20 especially amongst all the current hits that were out. Another one from 2011 the chart where Will Young scored his first top 5/10 hit in 5 years with Jealousy. I remember being over the moon with that plus the whole release week build up was quite exciting imo. This post has been edited by Rob S: 21st July 2014, 10:52 PM |

'Please Don't Let Me Go' vs. 'Teenage Dream' week.
I was rooting for Olly so much that week and Katy Perry was huge competition, so it was great to see him triumph! |
