This is a list of the top 100 largest sales weeks for an album for the decade to date, that is from January 1st 2010 and ending December 31st 2019. I thought it might be interesting to see
Italic refers to an album that was not on its début week and purple refers, as ever, to British artists.

Et voilŕ. Hope this list is of some interest to people, needless to say I'll keep it updated. Interesting that the only million+ sales weeks of the decade to date have been by females - they really do have the strongest fanbases!
I'm sure there are some mistakes and particularly formatting errors in the thread so feel free to point them out!
Thanks for putting this together! I know it's been said to death but this really puts into perspective just how unbelievable the post-Grammys week for '21' was, especially considering how much it had already sold up to that point.
The one that sticks out as quite strange in that list is Sade - what did they do to get first week sales on a similar level to One Direction and Jay-Z?!
Was Adele's 700k+ after the Grammy's or something? Absolutely massive!
Yes, it was!
Yay at red top and especially Speak Now in 3- one of the best albums ever
Also nice to see Frozen on there
Added Jason Aldean.
I can't believe Coldplay have the biggest sales week / debut this year.
Big thanks for the list
I highly doubt that Taylor can reach 1m, it'd be nice if she did though. But given that the second best opening of the year is under 400k, I'd say 800k could be quite accurate this time.
I think she'll come in at #6 or #7 on this list
I think everyone was wrong. In retrospect we were probably silly to think her sales would drop off so much - I could imagine her next album opening with even more
Crazy that the only 1+ million sales week so far this decade have been by females, by the way! Of course when 3/4 of those weeks are Taylor, it's a bit less of a success for the female gender as a whole, but it's still bizarre and cool to see.
Really interesting lists compiled here. Quite sad the lack of influence 2014 has had on these lists for this decade (bar 1989's first week sales). Our Q4 this year is currently rather underwhelming in terms of upcoming releases. Hopefully 2015 gets things back on the right track.
Born This Way still has the highest digital sales debut in Billboard history tho
True. I kinda feel bad for her in that regard - as much as the 99c thing may not even have had anything to do with her, she's never gonna be seen as a legitimate million seller.
A record is a record
I don't see what's tarnishing or non-legitimate about it, if Amazon used the album to promote their new streaming service at the time. It has nothing to do with Gaga or being desperate for sales. Regardless if it was offered by one retailer for 99c for 2 days. "Sold" implies that there's an intent to purchase from the consumers. It wasn't offered for "free". People wouldn't buy the album if they didn't like it even if it was for free.
You have good points Kath, but the reason it's "tarnished"/I feel bad for her is because no matter how legit the sales were, this argument will come up every time Born This Way's first week does The general public that are aware of what happened with BTW's first week will always think "oh yeah that's the thing where she sold them for 99c isn't it?", which devalues her achievement quite a bit
This isn't exactly the same situation as Born This Way, but I'm hearing a lot that 1989's huge opening is because of Taylor's lack of cooperation with Spotify and the resulting inability of consumers to stream the album. I don't think it necessarily devalues the achievement but it has caused a number of people to shrug it off with an (overly) simple explanation.
If Taylor Swift beat Britney with 99c offers I wouldn't consider it a legit record-breaker then. Lady Gaga still sold 600k of legit copies which is still huge
Yeah that's a joke. If I want to listen to music for free and a way to listen to it for free is taken away, I'm going to choose the other extremely obvious way to listen for free.
Taylor has another entry this week in the Top 30 with her 401k, and will probably enter again next week
J Cole is the only solo male to crack 300k this year.
Wow, cool post. I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real hard work to make a great article.
I put things off too much and never seem to get started.
Amazing content.
