BuzzJack Music Forum _ Madonna _ Medellín (with Maluma) ● Single #1

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 23 2019, 11:34 AM

Madonna filmed a music video at the Panorâmico de Monsanto, Lisbon on Monday, so we should hopefully be getting some news on new music very soon!

Above photo was taken from her insta story, I think she looks great! Could we be getting another 'storyline' video following the reception to 'Ghosttown'? Could we be getting a ballad as the first single? Those are the vibes I'm getting; will be nice to have a bit of a change from the usual Madonna lead single type.

Posted by: HausofTove Jan 30 2019, 05:45 PM

Her recent transformation on social media is making me so excited for new music. BRING IT ON !!!!!

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 30 2019, 07:41 PM

I agree! There's been a shift on social media and it just feels like we're on the verge of hearing news of music any day soon now!

We at DrownedMadonna.com have learned that what Madonna has been working on in Lisbon is not just a music video.

We have been told that it is a bigger project that involves her new music. But we do not know exactly what it means.

We have nothing else to share, except that details will be released “soon.”

Visual album? ohmy.gif Please not another f***ing MDNA Skin advert.

From MadonnaTribe:

QUOTE
In more news, the first single will be with Maluma, the Colombian reggaeton singer, songwriter and Latin Grammy Award winner who recently appeared on Madonna’s Instagram straight from the recording studio.

Hmm, please don't be jumping on the 'Despacito' bandwagon two years too late. no.gif Tbf I do have a bit more faith than that given Madonna has used this style of music before, usually very successfully.

Popjustice are suggesting there will in fact be two lead singles for different markets: one being the above and one being a disco-inspired track. I'd be down for that!

Posted by: vibe Mar 1 2019, 03:59 PM

People will say that she is jumping on the Latin bandwagon . However she has always used Latin rhythms and sounds.

Posted by: dandy* Mar 1 2019, 09:11 PM

I just want her to move away from dance for this one. I'm ready for more stripped back acoustic stuff, I'm on board with potential latin influences though as long as it isn't too tacky. More than anything else, I want the album to be cohesive and sound like a true body of work - that's when she really peaks for me.

Madonna has recruited some former stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race to appear in her upcoming music video.

The Queen of Pop is currently gearing up for her return to the music scene, with the lead single from her upcoming 14th studio album, which is believed to be called Magic, tipped for release in the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, Madonna revealed on Instagram that she was shooting the song’s music video, and it sounds as though she may have some surprise Drag Race cameos.

Among them will be the most recent winner of All Stars 4, Monét X Change, who is reported to have accepted a last-minute offer from Madonna, forcing her to miss a show in Denver.

As a result, Monét has been pulled from the Haters Roast US tour, with a statement from organisers saying: “Sometime during the afternoon, we’re told [Monét]received a phone call from Madonna with an offer to be in an upcoming music video. Monét asked [organisers Murray & Peter] if it would be ok to leave the tour to accept the offer. We said no because it was too short notice to replace her on Haters.

“Just hours before the show was to start and without telling anyone including the other queens on the Denver show, Monet left the venue and flew to LA to accept Madonna’s offer. Therefore, we have decided that Monet will no longer be on any upcoming Haters Roast dates.”

What’s more, season 4 runner-up Phi Phi O’Hara revealed on her Twitter account that she had also been offered the chance to appear in Madonna’s video, but turned it down.

Photographer Luke Austin posted on his Instagram account that he’d been on the set of Madonna’s video for 16 hours, teasing: “The song is great. The video is political. The video will be controversial.”

Sounds exciting! Definitely a step up from 'Living for Love'.

Posted by: dandy* Mar 2 2019, 02:10 PM

This does sound exciting - I'm on board with the idea of including Drag Race stars *.*

Take it as you will but apparently this was posted on MadonnaTribe:

QUOTE
Guys I just heard a snippet of M's new song. It was very bad quality so can't really judge for now. Radios got it today so I'm guessing its either out this Friday or next week. It sounds like the song with Maluma even if he kinda sounds like Pittbull on the song. What I can say its very reggaeton and it feels like a grower. As I said its bad quality and only 20 seconds long but I think we might have a hit here. Cant really make out what she's saying but she does say "aiaiai" at one point wink.gif

Edit: Radios have the entire song but they don't have the title yet (WTF?) they will receive it the day before they are allowed to play it... which is April 18. Its next week smile.gif))))

No, much groovier, makes you want to dance, at least from what I heard. Unapologetic Bitch never got me wanting to get up and dance

Uhm I don’t know. I’m quite open and love Madonna
Of course. The song is not reggae. Think more “la tortura” by shakira. That’s the style, even if i’m Not saying that the song sounds like this particular song at all. Just to give you an idea. Keep in mind that I only heard a 20 second snippet LQ. But I think this is going to be great performed live smile.gif

Posted by: vibe Apr 10 2019, 08:58 PM

I also received messages today that radio have the song to be played from next week. Also album and tour sale will start the week after Eurovision .

When I read "bad quality" I thought they meant the song was bad as opposed to the quality of the audio. mellow.gif

Posted by: dandy* Apr 17 2019, 04:10 PM

I don't know what to think yet! It's very different to what I was expecting from her and it doesn't seem overly commercial for a lead single - although listening to it a second time now and it's already growing on me a bit.

Posted by: liamk97 Apr 17 2019, 04:13 PM

This is very different for a Madonna single, particularly a lead! I'll need to let this one settle but I'm intrigued after one (rushed) listen at work.

Posted by: liamk97 Apr 17 2019, 04:14 PM

The "one two cha cha cha" bits are fab though.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Apr 17 2019, 04:17 PM

Hmmmmm

Posted by: .MIKE. Apr 17 2019, 04:18 PM

Not at all what I was expecting, but I can definitely get on board with it!
This is exactly what she should be doing at this point in her career! There are some really fantastic parts to this, the Madonna bits are a lot better than the Maluma parts... and the ‘1,2, cha cha cha’ just gives me life!

B*tch she’s Madonna! And I’m stannin’!

Posted by: HausofTove Apr 17 2019, 04:20 PM

Not what I was expecting but I'm liking it. Unlike anything she's properly done before and I'm here for a complete album reinvention along this vibe.

Posted by: slowdown73 Apr 17 2019, 04:32 PM

I have one word to describe it “rubbish”. Compare that with stuff like frozen, like a prayer or hung up. Her voice is so processed and the rapper adds nothing to an already dire song.

Posted by: dandy* Apr 17 2019, 04:32 PM

Third listen in and I'm now declaring it her best lead single in ages! It's like a modern take on a Ray of Light track and that is no bad thing at all.

Posted by: Bangtan Cody Apr 17 2019, 04:34 PM

the ”ay yi yi” part sent me

Posted by: Liаm Apr 17 2019, 04:38 PM

Ooh this is pretty damn great! I'm on my 4th listen and it's growing a lot each listen, very very different for her but it makes sense with her moving to Portugal and sort of reinventing herself. If this is an indication for the rest of the era, I'm hyped to hear more.

Posted by: tommie Apr 17 2019, 04:39 PM

Hm, well, at least it's more interesting than what she's released the past decade or so.

Posted by: DASHER77 Apr 17 2019, 04:39 PM

I bloody LOVE IT!!!! Her best lead single in since Hung Up. Magnificient!!!!

Posted by: blacksquare Apr 17 2019, 04:40 PM

I really wasn't sure on my first listen — the autotune is definitely a choice. Maluma sounds great.

I agree with this. It's different for her and the most left-field thing she's done in years. I'm so glad it's not a reductive take on everything she's already done, like the last two albums.

The production is so lush, especially from the halfway point. It's even mastered properly! It's been a while.

I understand what you're saying, but not everyone can recreate classics like those. Especially this far into their career.

I'm glad she's doing something different and not retreading old ground, which is something we all love about Madonna. She has taken risks and taken new sonic directions throughout her career, but she's been failing at that for the last decade or so. It's about time she tried something new.

Exactly! For her to be over 30 years into her career and still doing something different to what we've heard before is astonishing, it being a great song just tops that off.

Posted by: Klumzee Apr 17 2019, 04:54 PM

I'm here for it! Definitely not what I expected or particularly like the other Latin hits currently. I don't think Maluma's parts compliment the track that well but the track does need a second person to bounce off - the ad-libs work! I can feel it being a grower but probably not a hit - a few of the YouTube comments are saying this sounds more like an album track which I can agree with!

Madonna has been doing Latin themed bops for decades. She walked so the pop girls today could run.

It’s very la Isla Bonita if it were a Ray of Light track. Maybe slightly too much Maluma but I LOVE.

Exactly!! It's very easy to say that this is chasing a trend just because Latin music is popular rn, but she did La Isla Bonita over 30 years ago. Plus this isn't really that commercial anyway, it's her at her best pushing the envelope a bit rather than just being a basic Latin tinged track.

Posted by: liamk97 Apr 17 2019, 05:42 PM

Yeah I had my worries when I saw reggaeton popping up in descriptions but I thought Madonna has been inspired by Latin music throughout her career so had faith a return to the style would be true to her.

Exactly.

This also doesn't sound like the other reggaeton bops at all. It's dreamy and a lot more spacey than Chantaje etc. It's not chasing any trends, especially at 5 minutes long.

Listening with headphones and I'm loving this! Doesn't really sound like any other Latin-inspired song that has been in the charts. I love the way the beat creeps in and out and that "one two cha cha cha" hook. The song is given enough room to breathe yet it doesn't actually feel like it's 5 minutes long; all the parts of the song have been measured just right.

Like blacksquare said, I'm relieved the mastering/mixing actually sounds right! Bit of an effect on the vocals but again it's done well and not making her sound robotic or underwater.

Cannot wait for the video! Roll on next Wednesday!

The production is SUBLIME.

I love how it builds through the verses slowly pulsating in the background.

It's not trend-chasing at all and I admire her for releasing something she's obviously worked hard on, but I'm not so keen on first play. Verses are quite good and the cha cha cha bits are great but I think she forgot a chorus??

Some reviews:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/apr/17/madonna-medellin-ft-maluma-review-a-shapeshifting-return-to-form:

QUOTE
Co-produced by Madonna’s American Life collaborator Mirwais, Medellín is quite unlike anything we’ve heard from the singer before, and her most subdued lead single since 1998’s stately Frozen. The most initially disarming thing about it is its balmy sense of ease. “I woke up in Medellín,” she sings over airy synths, before slyly adding, “Another me could now begin.” A rhythmic reggaeton beat kicks in for a fiesta-starting chorus, with lovey-dovey call-and-response between the duo. At nearly five minutes, Medellín’s pacing feels refreshingly relaxed, though it wouldn’t be a Madonna co-write without a few lyrical clunkers (“pain” rhymed with “champagne”). It doesn’t exactly do much to dispel stereotypes of Colombia either (“We built a cartel just for love,” she sings).

But those are minor quibbles: Medellín is a potent reminder of Madonna’s deft history of meshing genres and a convincing addition to the roll call of western megastars like Beyoncé and Justin Bieber linking up with Spanish-language artists. And unlike the occasional trend-chasing of her most recent albums, MDNA and Rebel Heart, Medellín proves that Madonna is well equipped to weather the demands of today’s listening trends while bringing global styles into her own world. For Madonna, it seems that the streaming age may just speed up her shapeshifting.

QUOTE
While a song that begins with a cha-cha count-in and the lyric “I took a pill” sounds like it should be a dancefloor rager, it’s actually the unexpectedly low-key return of Madonna, who today dropped “Medellin,” the first single from her forthcoming album “Madame X.” A collaboration with Colombian singer Maluma — himself a native of the country’s mountain city — and her longtime collaborator Mirwais, the song combines a sing-song melody with a reggaeton-inflected, shuffing beat; she and Maluma pair trade off flirty verses in Spanish throughout the song.

While she pronounces the city’s name correctly (“meh-deh-zheen”), to her discredit she needlessly references the city’s violent past — it was the home base of drug cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar — in the lyrics: “We built a cartel just for love/ Venus was hovering above us.” Visitors to the city will know that it’s one of the last things residents want to talk about (unless they’re leading one of the tourist-baiting “Narcoterrorism tours”).

The song stretches on for nearly five minutes, stretching out toward the end with an extended instrumental bit designed for some low-key dancing. While produced by Mirwais, the song recalls Madonna’s previous Latin-inflected work with producer/songwriter Diplo.

The rest of the lyrics are more impressionist and romantic, and the city is only mentioned incidentally. “I took a pill and had a dream/ I went back to my seventeenth year, allowed myself to be naive, to be someone I’ve never been,” she sings on the song’s opening verses. “I took a sip and had a dream/ And I woke up in Medellín.”

And while the song may not be the dancefloor-filling that fans might be hoping for, it’s a sultry and promising introduction to Madonna’s latest era.

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/madonna-medellin-ft-maluma/:
QUOTE
It should come as a surprise to precisely no one that Madonna rides the Latin pop wave for her first single in four years. From “La Isla Bonita” to Evita, Madonna’s occasional flirtation with Latin America over the years has yielded some career highlights. That, combined with the fact that Madge practically invented the now-common pop-star move of vampiring all that is young and hot from album to album, leads us down to Medellín, Colombia. The reggaeton singer Maluma guides the way, carrying the sultry, dembow-tinged song with his whispered Spanish responses to his duet partner’s eerily still verses. On a track that opens with Madonna counting off a cha-cha-chá like she’s in an ASMR video, Maluma stands out, via actual singing, as the heart and soul really selling this fever dream of young love. The chorus pops off into a joyous celebration because of him.

“Medellín” may end up being a bigger moment for Maluma than Madonna, but as far as the pop icon’s semi-recent cool-hunting exploits go, the song sits closer to the top of the heap than the bottom. It is more sonically restrained than her EDM phase, leaving room in the production for tactile details that mostly work (though the echo and Auto-Tune on her vocals is a bit much). Madonna has struggled at times in her late career to find a balance between campy bangers and more mature balladry; “Medellín” is something of a sexy, stylish middle ground. Of course, she couldn’t let a whole song this decade go by without at least one cringe-y moment. “We built a cartel just for love,” she declares, turning the titular city’s violent drug trafficking history into lyrical myopia.

“Medellín” also finds Madonna reuniting with her longtime collaborator, the French producer Mirwais. The track is centered around a classic cha-cha-chá groove over which Madonna and Maluma trade bilingual verses while the song moves effortlessly between a sparse, understated verse and a brilliant chorus bursting with deep house euphoria.

I completely get people not liking it becasue it's different and perhaps not what everyone wants from her, but it's quite frankly ridiculous to write this off as trend-chasing just because it's partly in Spanish with reggaeton influences and we've had a few watered down Latin hits in recent years. It's 5 minutes long, with a bit of a strange structure and a bit of a lack of chorus, if she was trend chasing she could easily have done a generic watered down 3 mintue song with a catchy chorus and probably impressed nobody, if nothing else it's a good sign she's being divisive!

She's moved to Portugal and has shown she's a bit infatuated with the culture so naturally is going to have a lot of that influence on the album. It's very odd to just compare any song with Spanish and a slight Latin vibe to Shakira etc. unfavorably just because you don't like it laugh.gif

It’s low key almost racist to pigeonhole an entire culture’s music as something beneath us for whatever reason.

Honestly it's the duality of tones mixed with the more constant production that's making me grow into this. It goes from La Isla Bonita in the verses to a random reggaeton track in 30 seconds and for some reason I'm loving it

I'm glad someone else has said this. I have read so many ignorant comparisons across the internet (one or two here) since this dropped.

How does it sound like Shakira? Because it has Spanish lyrics and a reggaeton beat? Try again.

Posted by: gooddelta Apr 18 2019, 08:47 AM

I can definitely see myself going back to this a lot, enjoyed the first listen and it's definitely her best lead single since Hung Up for me.

It gives me vibes of #Beautiful by Mariah Carey, not really in sound or style but more in the respect that it's an icon putting out a very credible, laidback summery single decades into their career that harks back to the some of the finest moments of their past while keeping one foot firmly in the present, but in a way that sounds natural rather than trend-chasing.

This is the kind of comparison I can get behind. #Beautiful worked because it was Mariah doing something a little more restrained, 'credible' and different (for her) after serving a lot of the same for years. Medellín is doing the same but pushing it even further.

I went from indifferent on the first listen to falling madly in love with it. ~slow down papi~

Brilliant comeback from Madonna. I loathed 4 minutes when it came out (trend chasing) and predicted it wouldn't sell Hard Candy. However, grown to love it as a standalone classic. GMAYL/ Girl Gone Wild and Living For Love are fun but pretty safe and formulaic Madonna lead singles.

This is so different yet so Madonna. Love it. Whether it joins her classics remains to be seen but I'd rather her try new styles. She said in her infamous but very brave Billboard speech a couple of years ago that she wasn't allowed to age or be played on the radio. This is a big middle finger up to the industry. She's ace.

Posted by: JüperTrouper Apr 18 2019, 10:48 AM

I don't think its trend chasing. #Beautiful is a solid comparison. Its not a Havana soundalike or dependent (I think) on a retro sample like e.g. Wild Thoughts or I Like It...

Posted by: HausofTove Apr 18 2019, 10:55 AM

I really don't think it's chasing any sort of trend. She has spent the past while living abroad and getting fully immersed in the culture and music they offer. Her social media recently has shown her love for it all so she's clearly passionate about it and not just doing it for the sake of a quick buck.

She's invested not manufactured.

Just translated the Mulma verses:

Calm, baby, I support you
We do not have to talk much to get into the roll
If you want to be my queen, I'll crown you
And for you to feel here I have a throne

You like to ride it, that's clear
If you feel like I'm going fast, I'll lower it
Excuse me, I know you're Madonna
But I'm going to show you how this dog falls in love with you

...

Hey mama, what's the matter with you? (Tell me)
Look, we're already in my house (Yeah)
If you feel there is a trip there in your head (Woo)
It will be because of the excess of brandy (Tell it)

But, mommy, calm, you just hesitate
We are in Colombia, here is rumba on each corner
And if you want we will go to Detroit (You know)
If I know where you're coming from then I know where I'm going

Racyyyyy. "It will be because of the excess of brandy" makes me lol. laugh.gif

Posted by: Cucumberella Apr 18 2019, 09:58 PM

i really feel like i'm missing out on something here?

the songwriting is so clumsy sad.gif and i don't think maluma is a good compliment to her although he sounds good. i just feel like it comes across a bit tacky. it's not so much 'trend-chasing' that's the issue here but more that she doesn't seem to have taken much risk? and my cynicism is kicking in, but there seems to be great dichotomy between the theme of the album and this song? i don't get how this fits into the project at all? it all seems a bit gimmicky to me. as if the ideas aren't fully formed.

she worked with maluma (a current, pretty safe name in latin music), worked with mirwais (which i should LOVE) and done another latin-flavoured bop... it seems like she's trying to revisit her past if anything and not coming off anywhere as successful to me.

Posted by: Cucumberella Apr 18 2019, 09:59 PM

her bravest moves are when she creates the zeitgeist instead of repeating it (erotica, william orbit, original mirwais etc.)

I think being 5 minutes long and taking a good couple of minutes to get going means that it won't be that appealing to streaming audiences even if it did get playlist support. It was #3 on NMF and completely missed the Top 200. Maluma's name will help her out in Latin American and Europe but he's not going to attract the same sort of numbers in the UK. Maybe Swae Lee and Quavo will help? Who knows.

I can't say I'm too fussed though. We've got a great lead single that seems to be largely loved by her fanbase and we have a strong, dedicated campaign coming up with its video and Billboard performance.

That’s great news on being added to the A-List on BBC RADIO 2 !! There’s so much negative press on Madonna being snubbed by Radio. Its actually a very good song, abstract on its structure and slightly unusual which is what I like about Madonna.

Posted by: Medellíam Apr 24 2019, 06:14 PM

Yeah I noticed there was an article about her being snubbed by BBC radio which wasn't quite true. The Radio 2 playlist updates on Wednesdays so Medellin probably just missed out last week and we all know that Radio 1 aren't going to playlist her so that's not exactly news worthy.

Let’s hope the radio impact can begin .

Has anyone heard it on any other radio station ? When does heart playlist come out ?

As far as I am aware, there's not been an issue with YouTube data being reported in time like there is for Spotify.

YouTube data is always a day behind in the midweeks so I expect it's the same in Friday's chart I'm afraid!

Posted by: vibe Apr 26 2019, 06:19 AM

Being added to radio 2 a list and it’s song of the week there should help it maintain a top 50 download position ?
We also have the billboard performance.

It’s only featured on two Apple Music playlists. Taylor is now ‘number one’ on most of them , and she has released the video at the same time , and on a Friday.

I assume it’s also not doing well on Spotify ?

Unfortunately not. sad.gif For the Friday chart, streams for Thursday are worked out from trends during the week and the actual data is just scrapped completely.

Yeah, Radio 2 airplay should keep it comfortably Top 40. Not sure what effect Billboard Music Awards usually has on the UK but presumably it'll help out a bit.

Not been doing good on UK Spotify at all. Not appeared on the Top 200 even when it appeared at #3 on New Music Friday. It's on a few playlists such as 'All New All Now' (places eighth; 421k followers), 'Pop Rising' (1.6m followers but really low down), 'The Pop List' (635k and really low down) and 'This is How We Do' (587k; low again) but it needs to be on one of the big playlists like 'Today's Top Hits' or 'Hot Hits UK' to compete with other chart songs.

#4 on YouTube trending, would be #3 but Taylor Swift is ahead.

I'm happy with that given I wasn't convinced it would hold on from its midweek position. Would love it to get higher but at least it adds to her chart tally.

Music Week:

Falling short of the Top 75 on its first full week of availability is Medellin (feat. Maluma), the introductory single from Madonna’s forthcoming 14th studio album, Madame X. It opens at No.87 (5,893 sales).

Total sales stand at 7645, meaning it sold 1752 in the week ending 25th April.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Apr 27 2019, 03:23 PM

So she probably would have been around #60 with a full week.

Surely it wont add to her tally until she goes Top 75. Positions 76-100 are not counted as a hit single

But i do hope that it does go Top 75 at some point most likely the Eurovision performance in a few weeks time.

Depends I guess, the OCC publish a Top 100 that's readily available so I don't see why it couldn't count.

Rumours are that Eurovision will see her perform something else. There's another music video that's been shot that features several drag queens, I'm guessing whatever song that is will be what's performed.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Apr 27 2019, 11:13 PM

I think the next single might chart better or whatever she does at Eurovision.

UK wise a song like this was never going to be a chart hit despite it being her most interesting lead single in a long while.

Madonna still making the top 100 in the streaming era is a success in itself though especially as that week didn’t include the buys from her biggest fans who’d have likely bought it on the release day (I know I did although I was going to wait I just got it straight away).

Posted by: Medellíam Apr 28 2019, 01:58 PM

Despite not appearing on the UK Spotify chart, it must have done well enough on streams to get her into the chart as #32 on sales wouldn't be enough alone. I agree that, as far as the UK is concerned, this isn't the sort of song that's appealing to streaming audiences as it doesn't throw you instantly into it and it's too long. As you say, it's her most interesting lead in a long time so for that I am grateful and would take over chart success.

No sign of it in the Billboard Hot 100 or Bubbling Under. sad.gif Even 'Living for Love' made #108.

In more positive news, debuts at #75 on UK Radio Airplay (currently #35 on the rolling chart) and climbs 17-1 on BBC Radio 2's Most Played Tracks! Received 19 plays there last week.

I was thinking Maluma’s fans would be behind the song more. His last single is in the top 10 in nearly
all Spanish talking countries charts . The video has over 250 million views. It’s called HP and it’s not better than Medellin.

Apple Music didn’t really support Medellin either on playlists.
4 minutes is number one on pop throwback today .
Hung Up is number 7 on pure throwback .

From the Music Week sales report:

QUOTE
Released today, Crave (feat. Swae Lee) is the third track to be pulled from Madonna’s upcoming album Madame X – but the first two have thus far failed to make the Top 75. Introductory track Medellin (a collaboration with Maluma) reached No.87 a fortnight ago before falling out of the chart, while I Rise – issued 3 May – failed to secure enough support to chart at all this week. Medellin peaked at No.20 on the radio airplay chart last week and is still climbing the TV airplay chart, where it moves 128-61 in the latest frame.

Non-mover at #33 on the UK Sales Chart. Spent 3 weeks in the Top 40 - technically that's the longest she's spent there since 'Celebration'.

Posted by: vibe May 12 2019, 08:24 AM
