21st April 2019

It's back on top for The Walker Brothers for a second week this year, and an 8th week in total. Bananarama get their first top 10 since they covered Moves Like Jagger in 2012 and highest-placed track since Love Don't Live Here/The Runner (yes I was still listing double A's together then) peaked at 6 in 2010. Mabel finally cracks the top 10, emulating her mum and uncle, and the highest new entry is a new musical direction for 60-year-old Madonna, still not giving a toss what people think she should do, quite rightly. In at 14 for Medellin and a joint effort with Maluma for some Columbian chart action that isn't Shakira.

Raleigh Ritchie returns after 3 years away, and grabs his 3rd chart entry and equal-highest chart peak in one fell swoop since Bloodsports also peaked at 17. Better known as Grey Worm in Game Of Thrones these days, I just found out a bit late, as he was a recording artist before he was an actor for me - I didn't start GOT until 2 years ago and didn't make the connection. He has a great voice, singing and talking. The old-time samples add to the sad-mood of Time In A Tree. Dennis LLoyd meanwhile debuts at 20. Nevermind the name, it's a pseudonym just like Raleigh Ritchie is, only RR is British and DL is Israeli.

At 29, Lil Nas X debuts, and drags along Billy Ray Cyrus for some country/urban crossover action, BRC of course more famous for his charting daughters these days, both have had a much better career in terms of recordings, but here you go, an unlikely return after 27 years away or so, and it's way better than Achy Breaky Bloody Heart. Talking of Game Of Thrones, the theme tune finally charts, John Newman makes a comeback after a couple of years away for a 6-year run of entries, Mark Ronson is back again, this time with Lykke Li who charted in 2014 with Gunshot, Kacey Musgraves gets another entry, while former chart-toppers The Veronicas are also back after not following up their 2014 number one You Ruin Me, but get a 3rd entry 10 years since their debut.
