BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love

Posted by: ThePensmith 7th June 2016, 04:44 PM

First single off Mr Murs' fifth studio album is imminent... according to this Tweet anyway:

He did also advise in interviews recently that something new would be out in time for when he supports Take That at Hyde Park in July. #bringitmurs yahoo.gif

Posted by: Regina 7th June 2016, 07:02 PM

It better not be anything like his recent output which has been dire. Would prefer a years break really.

Posted by: pippa 9th June 2016, 03:53 PM

I am slightly anxious this time. I think Olly is unsure of what direction he is going with with sound so i am not so sure what to expect.

Posted by: ThePensmith 13th June 2016, 07:06 PM

Confirmed on Twitter by the man himself that he's out in Las Vegas shooting the video tomorrow *in Elvis voice* Thankyaverymuch... biggrin.gif

Posted by: Jade 14th June 2016, 04:16 PM

I'm not really as hyped for this as I would've been in the past. I think he's lost me a bit in the Never Been Better era. 'Dear Darlin'-esque smash please!

Posted by: pippa 14th June 2016, 04:50 PM

I look forward to hearing the new single. There is a part of me like you Jade, im not as excited as i usually am as Never Been Better was his most underwhelming album to date for me.

Posted by: ThePensmith 18th June 2016, 05:33 PM

A few behind the scenes shots from filming:

Looks very sharp, looks like this'll be a good summery sort of video anyway!

Posted by: Regina 19th June 2016, 10:55 AM

Look like it'll be the same as pretty much every other video he's done. He really needs to do something new.

Bit like your responses to this thread then? rolleyes.gif

Posted by: Regina 19th June 2016, 11:13 AM

I'm allowed to express my frustration in how Olly seems to be making no effort at all to expand his sound or image. This is his 5th album and he's shown next to NO
artistic development. So wind your neck in.

Posted by: ThePensmith 19th June 2016, 11:17 AM

And I'm allowed to express my fatigue at you whinging like a two bob watch, so wind your neck in yourself. Single's not even out there yet and you've already made up your mind about it. The fact he's still here and on a 5th album shows he has moved on.

Posted by: Regina 19th June 2016, 11:30 AM

I'm not the only one who has posted here about not really enjoying his recent output or really looking forward to this new stuff though.

Posted by: Ryan. 19th June 2016, 04:53 PM

I'm very excited for a new Olly single, Kiss Me showed he was going in a new direction that I really liked and I hope he continues with that sound rather than going down the Stevie Knows route assuming that the re-release was a taster as to what could come on the next album.

Posted by: Slick 19th June 2016, 04:59 PM

I love Olly Murs and really enjoyed the Never Been Better album, but the campaign was a bit messy. He released the wrong singles and the deluxe tracks weren't up to scratch at all (the less said about 'Stevie Knows' the better.)

He does have the ability and talent to bring us something huge though and has done repeatedly over his career, so I remain optimistic.

Posted by: Aphrodite 20th June 2016, 12:23 AM

Never been better did well the era was messy comparing to all his previous. I hope he does well with the new material and has good material lined up, i prefer his more upbeat songs.

I STILL can't believe his label ever let that monstrosity of a song ever happen laugh.gif

Posted by: pippa 22nd June 2016, 03:04 PM

For the song to make the album is reasonably acceptable as it was a re-release. The big question i have is who sanctioned it as a single, that was a terrible decision.

Posted by: Regina 22nd June 2016, 03:04 PM

The song being recorded in the first place is what really is questionable.

Posted by: Joe. 22nd June 2016, 03:20 PM

Agree with Ryan, I am more excited than usual, as Kiss Me was a really interesting direction for him and my favourite of his singles. No more Stevie Knows BS though please.

Posted by: Mdh 22nd June 2016, 03:55 PM

I expect something pop-like, the first single from an album does tend to be the biggest and pop-iest (which seem to also be the most successful for him) and with summer around it'll probably be a tad more upbeat than the likes of Kiss Me and Stevie Knows (which really isn't that bad come on)

Posted by: pippa 22nd June 2016, 07:09 PM

Usually his lead singles perform the best for him but this trend was broken with Never Been Better album as Up outsold Kiss Me. I myself would like a strong upbeat song to kick the campaign off.

Posted by: ThePensmith 22nd June 2016, 08:23 PM

'Wrapped Up' was the lead single off 'Never Been Better', actually. 'Kiss Me' was the lead off the re-release and that still did well, it was still top 100 as late as March and went gold despite not going top 10!

Posted by: pippa 23rd June 2016, 02:09 PM

Apologies, i typed Kiss Me instead of Wrapped Up.

Posted by: ThePensmith 30th June 2016, 08:27 PM

New interview with the gossip site ODE, talking up a bit more about the album and also his fanboying over Coldplay:

THE arrival of July can only mean one thing — a new OLLY MURS single.

After ditching his X Factor job Olly is back in the day job and will release You Don’t Know Love next week.

He co-wrote the follow-up to his smash hit Kiss Me with legendary songwriter WAYNE HECTOR, who has previously brought us pop gems such as WESTLIFE‘s World Of Our Own and 1D’s Best Song Ever.

How convenient they're glossing right over Stevie Knows!

A very small snippet on his facebook today. Soubds interesting and different enough for him. Excited!

Didn't Dance With Me Tonight outsell Heart Skips a Beat too? Unless you're using a different definition of lead single

Posted by: Jonjo 4th July 2016, 04:55 PM

Hasn't 'Dear Darlin'' also outsold 'Troublemaker'?

Posted by: Jonjo 5th July 2016, 09:57 AM

Popjustice are all over this, just like they were with 'Seasons', 'Kiss Me', 'Heart Skips A Beat' & 'Dear Darlin''.

http://www.popjustice.com/briefing/alert-the-authorities-olly-murs-is-about-to-release-the-best-single-of-his-career/

He's also posted the intro on his Instagram, which can be heard in that PJ article. Sounds very good indeed!

Posted by: Juliano 5th July 2016, 05:50 PM

I have to admit, I've always liked Olly but this is his first single I'm actually excited about.

Posted by: ThePensmith 5th July 2016, 09:05 PM

It sounds awesome based on the preview!

He's done an exclusive interview with The Sun that went online this evening. The single (and indeed much of the album to come) lyrically touch on his breakup with his long term girlfriend last year: https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/1395444/former-x-factor-host-olly-murs-opens-up-about-battling-mental-pressure-of-career-and-splitting-from-girlfriend-francesca-thomas/

Preview sounds promising, can't wait to hear! Popjustice's positivity is interesting, they usually have a downer on him.

Posted by: LimeGreenBow 6th July 2016, 11:25 AM

bless him for trying

Posted by: Ryan. 7th July 2016, 03:59 PM

This is now out there and it is very very Kiss Me which is great as Kiss Me is one of my favourite Olly songs! I think it has a bit more of a punch than Kiss Me has in the chorus so hopefully that will help it in the charts.

Posted by: Jade 7th July 2016, 11:56 PM

Ooh i'm impressed upon first listen! Thankfully a lot more Kiss Me than Stevie Knows laugh.gif Smash please!

Posted by: J▲hq 8th July 2016, 12:15 AM

Had four or five listens now and I love it, instantly in his top 3 singles.

Posted by: Jonjo 8th July 2016, 12:39 AM

It's amazing. Fits very nicely in between Carly Rae's 'Run Away With Me' and Brandon Flowers 'Lonely Town'! wub.gif

Posted by: ThePensmith 8th July 2016, 06:21 AM

I'm over in Ireland and saw him perform it for the first time at his gig in Cork last night and downloaded my pre-order when I got back to the hotel (gig was brilliant BTW)...really good song, the chorus has been in my head for last few hours! Definitely gonna be a hit this!

Posted by: BASTILLEmdh 8th July 2016, 07:02 AM

This is very good, and it sounds HUGE.

Posted by: Taylor Jago 8th July 2016, 08:12 AM

Posted by: Catherine91 8th July 2016, 10:33 AM

Reminds me of 'In The Night' by The Weeknd.

Posted by: JosephStyles 8th July 2016, 01:01 PM

This is really good ohmy.gif probably his 2nd best already for me after Up. It reminds me a lot of Run Away With Me as Jonjo said, the way it explodes into that chorus as well as the production. Really hope this is a big hit!

Posted by: AaronTM 8th July 2016, 01:44 PM

Yes, I totally see the "Run Away With Me" similarities! I think this is really good and catchy. Well done Olly, let's pretend "Stevie Knows" never happened.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 8th July 2016, 01:49 PM

This is fabulous!

Posted by: Andr00w 8th July 2016, 03:51 PM

Didn't click on first listen but really loving this now!

Posted by: Regina 8th July 2016, 04:00 PM

It's a bit underwhelming as with most of his recent output, but it's a huge step up from the likes of Kiss Me and Stevie Knows.

Posted by: pippa 8th July 2016, 04:20 PM

Its very good, its very catchy. I believe this will have a lengthy chart run for Olly.

Posted by: HarryEzra 8th July 2016, 04:29 PM

I really like this too!

Posted by: Liаm 8th July 2016, 05:06 PM

I was like "eh ok" with the chorus then it started properly and I was like

TUNE. Better than anything off the last album except Did You Miss Me already.

Posted by: mr_pmt 8th July 2016, 07:46 PM

Undeniably a strong song!

Posted by: ThePensmith 8th July 2016, 08:27 PM

Olly was on ITV London Tonight talking about the single and they played a small snippet of the video which premieres next week: https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10153707641837944&id=335136617943

So pleasing to see this getting such a good response. As he says it's different for him to do a song like this touching on more personal things he's experienced. That chorus is mega especially!

Posted by: ThePensmith 10th July 2016, 07:41 PM

He is off on a regional radio tour tomorrow, starting in Scotland: http://smarturl.it/OMRadioTour

He got a good reception at Hyde Park yesterday opening for Take That as well! I'd love to see him play that with him headlining one day smile.gif

Posted by: ThePensmith 15th July 2016, 12:50 AM

I love the video! I will agree it's not all bells & whistles but it doesn't need to be. It's so well shot and really goes with the whole vibe of the song and the darkness of the lyrics (plus he looks cool as anything in it. And also reminded us to get my butt kicked down the gym!)

Posted by: Regina 15th July 2016, 03:11 PM

Borefest. I hate when people think an aftershave ad type of video will work. He never brings it visually.

Posted by: memebury. 15th July 2016, 03:16 PM

Definitely see the RAWM comparisons, my fave of his for a while!

Posted by: ThePensmith 16th July 2016, 05:13 PM

Well the single looks to be off to a good start anyway after just one week - #23, also climbing Spotify nicely and also straight on the C list at Radio 1! #16 on the Airplay chart as well smile.gif

No TV dates seem to be in the pipeline yet but I'd imagine given this has an 'impact date' of 12th August that we'll see some stuff around that time.

Posted by: Noahspike 17th July 2016, 09:56 PM

Absolute triumph of a pop song, and easily up there with his best singles for the chorus alone. <3

I...actually think I prefer it overall to 'Run Away With Me'. mellow.gif mellow.gif mellow.gif mellow.gif mellow.gif

(and now I have an excuse for my impending megaflop in the rate biggrin.gif)

I inadvertently heard an Olly gig last weekend in Hyde Park when my friends and I were sitting in the sun outside, and the song sounded crazy good amongst his back catalogue given it was a first-time outing. Already felt like a signature smash/career highlight. ohmy.gif

Posted by: ThePensmith 18th July 2016, 06:28 AM

First TV date for this looks to be Loose Women next Tuesday...

Posted by: Mango 18th July 2016, 10:36 AM

That chorus is a proper earworm. 'Kiss Me' really should have been Top 10, really hope this doesn't suffer the same fate.

Straight onto the A list at Radio 2 biggrin.gif

A plot.

Posted by: ThePensmith 24th July 2016, 10:47 PM

Now up to the B list on Radio 1, and climbs to #5 on UK radio airplay chart. People can knock the man all they want when the definition of having a 'hit' single is ever more warped these days by streaming but he's still knocking them out the park! This will be a long runner and seller a la 'Kiss Me' methinks.

Posted by: mr_pmt 30th July 2016, 10:50 PM

I can't get enough of this, I think it may even challenge 'Heart Skips A Beat' to be his best for me.

Posted by: Andr00w 31st July 2016, 12:37 AM

Seriously can't understand why this is not clicking with the general public - The airplay and promo is all there but even taking away streams its sales only performance is not great for a lead Olly single (8-21-18-23). Think he will always be the kind of artist though to do well with albums even if they are not as big as previously.

Posted by: pippa 9th August 2016, 03:17 PM

I am surprised by the lack of success for the single so far. I remain hopeful his second single can perform better.

Posted by: ThePensmith 9th August 2016, 07:17 PM

Most of it, with the best will in the world, is because no one outside the fanbase seems to know this single is even out even with all the airplay. Feet of blame with management as he's only been on (after this Friday) two TV shows to promote it and he didn't even perform it on one of those shows (Loose Women)! The single climbed iTunes and Spotify again after that interview and probably would have done more so if he'd performed it.

Posted by: Regina 9th August 2016, 07:39 PM

It's all over radio, so people will know it's out there.

Posted by: Ryan. 9th August 2016, 07:51 PM

I just wonder if the song is the problem here. I personally love it, and it has had a great reaction from online music fans. However, there's something about this style of song that just doesn't seem to click with the general public. It reminds me of Style, or Cheyenne, or even Kiss Me - this heavy synthpop/new wave-y sound doesn't quite seem to work sales-wise.

When I played this song for somebody a few weeks ago they said it was "tame" and one of his worst. Maybe it just doesn't have that grab factor on one-off listens compared to music fans who play it over and over again.

Posted by: ___∆___ 9th August 2016, 11:25 PM

The only thing that is poor is the lack of TV performances/interviews - Surely Olly's management wouldn't even have to try to get him booked onto all the early/mid morning shows? Loose Women, BBC Breakfast, This Morning, Lorraine, Good Morning Britain, The Saturday Show etc, should all be done and dusted by now!

Posted by: Regina 9th August 2016, 11:29 PM

Maybe they don't want him?

This is my thinking too, I mean I said before it reminds me of Run Away With Me, that had a-list support on Radio 1 as well as Capital playlisting and just didn't happen either sad.gif It just doesn't click with your average person it would seem.

I was thinking along these lines too when I saw it struggling somewhat...but I just can't accept that it's anything but a smash when I hear that chorus. Completely undeniable, which is saying something about the song given his vocal limitations. Always felt like it'd deliver him with a career peak in terms of converging critical and commercial acclaim and, while that's probably a stretch, it's great that it's finally picking up on iTunes now (which is due to what, by the way? I was about to say - that, and he was on Good Morning Britain yesterday as well. Also confirmed in the last few days he will be doing the September 7th edition of Radio 1's Live Lounge month (interestingly, still A-list this week as well!)

Even if it reaches that peak still nothing to be sniffed at. As mentioned above he does have acoustic and remix bundles coming for this next Friday so that'll be a welcome boost even after the 59p reduction goes!

v on point references. I'd agree, the 'stuttering' guitar just doesn't seem to resonate with chart music fans of 2016

In other news, it's now notched up a fourth week at the top of the airplay chart and he's just confirmed the first TV performance of this will be on the launch show for Strictly Come Dancing on 3rd September!

Posted by: (Zach) 20th August 2016, 04:39 PM

LOVE the Cheat Codes remix. Gave the song a bit of much needed life for me.

Posted by: ___∆___ 20th August 2016, 05:22 PM

The remixes are good - They should have kept it at 59p for another week to stabilise it seeing as it responded so well, streams have not improved that much and can't see the remixes giving it a huge boost so will probably start to free fall again but pleased it managed a Top 20 peak at least.

This has done OK so far, but I'm presuming that 19 will be its peak. Such a shame it didn't get any higher though, as it is definitely one of his best songs to date!

Posted by: ___∆___ 25th August 2016, 11:49 PM

Reduced again to 59p on iTunes - They should have left it at that price last week, it probably would have kept him in the Top 10 and not put the song into free fall on the charts.

I did see that. They should keep it at that price for after he's performed it on the Strictly launch show next Saturday but whether they do is another thing entirely. In other news he's revealed the other day that the fifth album now has a title and it has numbers in it. Cryptic!

New peak for you dont know love this week as it rises to number 15 mellow.gif

Nice to see they kept it at 59p for last week and got it to its new peak. He performs it again on The Jonathan Ross Show next Saturday but I think that'll be the last lot of promo for this single given he shoots the video for the second one this coming week!

I was hoping this would break the Top 10 how it's been flying high in iTunes lately, but I guess #15 is the best we can ask for.

It could stabilize a bit this week and stay Top 20 - Streaming is not budging on this track though, even after his promo, radio play and the fact it's been bouncing around the charts hasn't stimulated streaming, think he will struggle with any post album single success tbh.

It is looking good to remain top 20 this week. Streaming is totally gone against him as he is isnt gaining. In terms of actual sales (paid for) Olly will sell as much as Drake's One Dance. When compared in those terms it shows how streaming has far too much of an influence.

Certified silver - at least it's racking up some sales dispite it's erratic chart performance.

I know I saw that! Really chuffed for him. Which just goes to prove a lot of my thinking that chart positions aren't even all that these days. Hopefully the second single (out very soon indeed I'm told) will be following its success.

This single really does show how irrelevant the charts are becoming, based on sales, Olly has sold very well with many more left to come but it doesnt reflect in its chart peak.By the time the single leaves the chart it will have built up reasonably impressive sales.

Same thing with Little Mix and some of their recent singles. Nowhere near top 10 but the likes of "Love Me Like You" are among their biggest sellers!

You are aware that Love Me Like You (and Hair for that matter) went to #11. 'Nowhere near the top 10'...? 11 is as close as you can possibly get to the top 10 without being top 10.

Even if you take out streaming completely, 'One Dance' is still far bigger than 'You Don't Know Love' on sales alone. Here are their sales chart runs:

05-01-01-01-02-03-03-03-05-06-09-08-09-11-14-08-06-10-23-28-28-36-37-23-35... [Drake - One Dance]

08-21-18-23-25-06-19-15-06-09-09... [Olly Murs - You Don't Know Love]
