BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ Mercury Prize 2015

Posted by: Suedehead2 8th July 2015, 12:39 PM

The BBC have regained the television rights for the Mercury Prize. Channel 4's coverage for the past two years has been awful, so let's hope it improves now that it is back with the Beeb,

In the meantime, it's time to start speculating on likely nominees when the shortlist is announced in October. Here's hoping Public Service Broadcasting make it this year.

The last time I watched the Mercurys were, incidentally, when the BBC used to air them, so pleased they've got coverage again.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 11th July 2015, 10:05 AM

I'm glad the BBC's got the coverage back from Channel 4, as the latter has treated it more as an afterthought rather than a major event, and the BBC can tie into its entire media network to give it the extensive coverage it deserves. Having said that, Channel 4 did replace Jools Holland with Lauren Laverne as compere of the event, so it wasn't all bad. Just hope that they replace Nick Grimshaw as host as well, although I can't see the BBC doing that.

Once again, I agree with Public Service Broadcasting getting a nod, especially after their debut was unfairly overlooked. Sons of Kemet will be in with a good shout for the token jazz nomination, especially given that Seb Rochford, one of the most nominated acts for the prize under several different acts, is involved.

That's true!

If they qualify (two-thirds of the members are British), I'd like to see FFS included as well.

I don't think a lot of people care that much about the Mercury. As I recall last year's winner didn't get a lot of press attention.

Posted by: AntoineTTe 11th July 2015, 12:47 PM

Marina and The Diamonds - Froot....

But it wont be nominated despite being the most interesting British pop album since, um....The Family Jewels.

Posted by: richie 14th July 2015, 08:07 AM

It's pretty irrelevant now. I don't think music fans really care, just the media.

I wouldn't say that it's completely irrelevant. It does have a good effect on the nominees as I remember FKA Twigs' LP1 got a nice boost by it and even the winners jumped into the top 10 on iTunes for a few days last year. It's not as strong as an influence before but an impact is still there.

The shortlist is announced on Friday October 16.

^ My birthday impakt *.*

Some albums I think may feature on the list-
Jamie xx (In Colour)
Lianne La Havas (Blood)
Everything Everything (Get To Heaven)
Wolf Alice (My Love is Cool)
Young Fathers (White Men Are Black Men Too)
Foals (What Went Down)
Florence & The Machine (How Big How Blue How Beautiful)
Blur (The Magic Whip)
LA Priest (Inji)
Marika Hackman (We Slept at Last)
Benjamin Clementine (At Least for Now)

Firmly throwing my support behind Get To Heaven <3

I'd love if they went TOTALLY left-field and listed Clarence Clarity's gem of an album, but i'm aware that's reaching too far~

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 2nd October 2015, 09:39 PM

Hoping Lianne, Wolf Alice and Everything Everything all feature heart.gif

Posted by: SLlewellyn 3rd October 2015, 08:29 PM

I'd be very surprised if Jamie xx, Everything Everything and Wolf Alice don't feature. While I'm all for an under-the-radar album winning the award, some of these albums have done well in terms of a chart peak but I'm sure a Mercury Prize win would just do wonders (unlike with Young Fathers last year).

Foals album is just sublime though, it'd really cement them as a successful band of the 2010s if they were to win.

New Order - Music Complete

Posted by: richie 12th October 2015, 01:02 PM

Yep, New Order's comeback was 100 times better than Blur's.

Posted by: Pacifica 12th October 2015, 02:02 PM

If Flo isn't on this list and doesn't win the whole thing, this is bullshit.

Posted by: richie 12th October 2015, 02:33 PM

?

Posted by: Pacifica 12th October 2015, 02:45 PM

Yes, her.

Posted by: lewistgreen 12th October 2015, 04:48 PM

I definitely think Jamie xx is in with a shout, possibly Slaves too. Years & Years is probably pushing it really, but would be nice.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 12th October 2015, 04:50 PM

Jamie xx is the one I've played the most and it is a perfect album, but I'd like Young Fathers as the album is far better than the one they won with last year.

Posted by: lewistgreen 16th October 2015, 12:04 PM

The shortlist has been announced.

Aphex Twin - Syro
Benjamin Clementine - At Least For Now
C Duncan - Architect
Eska - Eska
Florence + The Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
Gaz Coombes - Matador
Ghostpoet - Shedding Skin
Jamie xx - In Colour
Róisín Murphy - Hairless Toys
Slaves - Are You Satisfied?
SOAK - Before We Forgot How To Dream
Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool

Posted by: #psychic7 16th October 2015, 12:09 PM

Real shame Everything Everything didn't get a spot sad.gif

Posted by: Liаm 16th October 2015, 07:57 PM

Has to be Florence & The Machine for me! Haven't heard of a couple though.

Posted by: Ezra's Whore 16th October 2015, 08:01 PM

I would love Wolf Alice to get it wub.gif

Even if Florence is my album of the year so far wub.gif

Posted by: Griff 16th October 2015, 08:21 PM

I don't particularly care but out of that lot I would like Jamie XX to win.

Pleasantly surprised to see Aphex Twin there and all Florence deserves is a lifetime of Noel Fielding impersonations.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 16th October 2015, 10:19 PM

Shocked Everything Everything didn't get nominated ohmy.gif I actually thought they were going to win it!

Wolf Alice to win hopefully, by far the best album there and easily one of my favourites of the year heart.gif

Posted by: Josh. 17th October 2015, 08:11 AM

Hoping Florence gets it because it really is a big step up from Ceremonials from me. Wolf Alice would be an excellent choice too though.

SOAKs album was quite nice, she has a really nice relaxing little thing going on but I sort of forgot to go back to it, same with Slaves but I think that is definitely the better album, they'd be good winners too!

Posted by: Doctor Blind 17th October 2015, 09:39 AM

Jamie xx for me off that list then.. haven't heard the C Duncan album but “Garden” is single of the year material so will definitely be checking it out now.

Posted by: Mart!n 17th October 2015, 10:10 AM

Florence or Jamie xx for me, I don't think Wolf Alice have a chance of winning this, if they pull it off, I'll be totally amazed.

Posted by: Joe. 17th October 2015, 11:17 AM

Jamie xx for me. Quite underwhelming, and I don't think Florence's album was her best by a long run and Everything Everything deserved a nomination for sure.

Posted by: Colm 18th October 2015, 08:35 PM

Boooooo - No Marina sad.gif

Posted by: richie 20th October 2015, 09:31 AM

Would love to see C Duncan win it - great wee album. Or for Aphex Twin to pick it up after such a long time at it. Ghostpoet would be cool too.

But it'll be something I don't really get like Jamie XX or SOAK.

Didn't think a great deal of the Wolf Alice album. One or two decent songs but their sound has been horribly diluted since their early EPs.

Posted by: #psychic7 20th November 2015, 06:41 PM

Happening tonight ohmy.gif (BBC Four at 9.30 if anyone wants to catch it)

Odds:
11/4 Benjamin Clementine
3/1 Jamie xx
8/1 Eska
11/1 Wolf Alice
12/1 Ghostpoet
12/1 Aphex Twin
14/1 SOAK
16/1 Slaves
16/1 Roisin Murphy
16/1 C Duncan
20/1 Gaz Coombes
25/1 Florence + The Machine

I really liked the Ghostpoet & Wolf Alice albums (from the ones I hadn't heard before the list reveal) biggrin.gif

Jamie xx/Ghostpoet/Benjamin seem the most likely contenders imo, and i'd be happy with any of those~

Posted by: Cauldron 20th November 2015, 07:56 PM

I only just realised that Rosin Murphy is up for this.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 20th November 2015, 09:14 PM

Soak or C Duncan for the prize.

Posted by: #psychic7 20th November 2015, 10:30 PM

and Benjamin Clementine picks up the prize biggrin.gif

Posted by: dandy* 21st November 2015, 12:09 AM

Benjamin's album was the one I bought when the shortlist was first announced and it's deceptive. It sounds great from the previews, Antony & the Johnsons style great, but the lyrics are just awful when you listen to it - like so bad they're laughable.

Posted by: UltraChristmas 21st November 2015, 12:16 AM

Was hoping Wolf Alice would win, by far my favourite on the list sad.gif

Posted by: dandy* 21st November 2015, 12:30 AM

I can't say I've heard everything but, from those I have, Florence and Jamie XX are by far the best there.

Posted by: ϑЃεβϘ 21st November 2015, 12:23 PM

I just think his voice is really meh. Just sounds like Antony Hegarty and I really don't like his voice either. Just sounds really put on and false - not natural at all

Posted by: richie 23rd November 2015, 10:44 AM

I didn't even hear that the prize had been awarded this weekend...and I've never heard of the winner.

Managed about 45 seconds of 'London' on Youtube before I had to switch it off.
