I'm having a relaxing Saturday morning listening my copy of Leftism 22 by Leftfield that arrived yesterday (and it remains fantastic wub.gif ), couple that with the news this week about OK Computer being remastered and re-released and it has got me thinking what other albums would people like to see given a fresh lease of life and what would you want to see featured on them?

This will probably be an unusual choice but I've always wanted a remastered version of the Chorus album by Erasure, coupled with a comprehensive second disc of the b-sides from that era as some of those were as strong as the album itself. I'd also love another update to Violator by Depeche Mode. I have most of the re-issued DM albums but I always found the quality of them to be a bit quiet when compared to other albums I listen to.

As for albums and artists that have already done this, I think the best ones I own are the Pet Shop Boys reissues with the second discs of b-sides, alternate and extended versions. They felt really comprehensive and who doesn't love having extended versions eh?

Posted by: popchartfreak 6th May 2017, 04:37 PM

I'm shocked to hear the psb albums were reissued with bonus tracks and I somehow missed them! Hopefully all the New songs were on that double album I did buy but I need to check!

I think I would like Roy wood related albums Eg the move wizzard and solo to get the deluxe treatment

Posted by: dandy* 6th May 2017, 05:59 PM

Really? You didn't spot the re-issues from PSB? ohmy.gif

It was the further listening editions from about 15 years ago maybe? If you type Pet Shop Boys Further Listening into google, you'll see them all soon enough.

Posted by: common sense 10th May 2017, 04:05 PM

I'd like them to remaster Tracy Chapman's classic first album as the CD has to be turned up high just to hear it at a normal listening level. Extras don't really interest me as much as a better sound.

One of the best remastered albums that I own is Rumours. The sound quality is far far better than the original cd release. They released it with Silver Springs stuck in the middle which I didn't want as I wanted the classic album as it was originally released on vinyl not how it might have been. Then they released the same remastered version but without Silver Springs so bought that. So if you're buying Rumours don't buy the late 80's/early 90's original CD but pay a bit more for the remastered one from I think 2010.

Haven't bothered with the remaster of Tango as have read that there's not much difference in sound quality and the original CDs sounded good, much better than Rumours.

Yes, I researched them, circa 2002 I think - a time when I was busy with other pursuits, clubbing and the like laugh.gif They go for silly money now which is annoying as there are plenty of tracks on them I don't have. Oops, that'll teach me not to pay attention! laugh.gif

Positives:

+Some re-releases can contain bonus and previously unreleased material
+The occasional gatefold designs are cool

Negatives: Dunno.

Posted by: Colm 23rd May 2017, 04:36 PM

I have the PSB ones of Actually and Behaviour. The Actually second cd is great.

I have Suede and Dog Man Start re-issues - DMS Disc 2's first 7 tracks are a great as any other album's first 7 tracks.

I have New Order's Lowlife and Technique - they're ok, I hear that they are not even complete. I've Tori Amo's LE, Manic EMG and THB. Violator.

I want a second disc of Manun's Six. Paul Draper says it is on the way.

PSBs are releasing 'further listening' editions of Nightlife, Release and Fundamental at the end of July.

They also appear to have reinstated their further listening albums on to iTunes so there's time to pick up any tracks you're interested in popchartfreak. happy.gif

I feel like a deluxe re-issue of Elastica's debut album is very much overdue. There's lots of b-sides and other tracks from that period that have never been reissued outside of the singles, and it would allow the band to hopefully find a new, younger audience. Not sure if there's any appetite for one at the minute though, but I would absolutely love one.

Posted by: dandy* 26th June 2017, 07:03 PM

Interesting choice. I used to love that album at the time but I bet I haven't played it since the turn of the century, may have to dig it out...

The Verve are re-releasing 'Urban Hymns' on September 1st to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the album.

QUOTE
The release will come in four different formats including the standard remastered CD, a deluxe two-disc CD version, a super deluxe 5 disc CD plus bonus DVD box set and a triple LP box set.

The deluxe versions will feature all of the accompanying b-sides plus three hours of previously unreleased live material, including the full 1998 hometown show in front of around 35,000 fans at Haigh Hall, Wigan.

The remastering and mixing work has been undertaken by ‘Urban Hymns’ original co-producer Chris Potter and Metropolis’ Tony Cousins.

Looks like there's also a 6LP super deluxe vinyl set too!

Posted by: dandy* 26th August 2017, 07:42 PM

Urban Hymns never quite resonated with me as strongly as it seemed to with the rest of the population. The singles were strong but I found a fair bit of the album quite bland.

That said, I'm interested in the remaster and repackage, it contains an extended version of Bittersweet Symphony for one.

Posted by: popchartfreak 27th August 2017, 07:29 PM

I bought the 3 PSB's new deluxe albums, very nice packaging and booklet info/interviews, and despite the overlapping of some fab tracks I already had on Format there's enough good stuff new to me to make it worthwhile.

Hooray! Now if only they's re-redo those early albums with even more archive material, and the next batch of more recent albums (which were just as good as this batch).....

Same here. Bought it but found it boring and overlong and the singles stand out with Bittersweet Symphony being the best track.

Can't thnk who'd want a 6 disc version. rolleyes.gif

Yes and Elysium are next to be repackaged as 'Further Listening' albums, both are out on October 20th.

Posted by: Colm 1st September 2017, 07:28 PM

The world doesn't really need Elysium to be re-packaged with a second disc.

Posted by: lewistgreen 1st September 2017, 09:54 PM

With Elysium only being 5 years old, it gives me hope that we will eventually get an Electric 'Further Listening' too, which will be amazing!

REM are re-releasing their classic Automatic For The People album soon for a 25th anniversary edition. The bonus tracks are largely live tracks and b-sides that I'm not interested in but it has reminded me how great that album was.

Having a Chorus weekend, really really enjoying listening to it all over again. Definitely their best album for me wub.gif

The bonus material is okay, the second disc of b-sides and remixes is nice but I could live without the live disc as it seems to basically be a chopped up version of the concert audio rearranged into the tracklisting of the album.
