BuzzJack Music Forum _ Eurovision Song Contest _ Confirmed: Eurovision 2020 CANCELLED

Posted by: Cqmerqn Mar 17 2020, 11:50 PM

Eurovision 2021 will be held in Rotterdam, but with new acts and new songs. All artists from this year will be invited back; but due to the rules, all current songs will no longer be eligible.

MOD EDIT: This is according to unconfirmed news reports - please await updates from the OFFICIAL news channels

I'm not seeing any source for this other than some random Twitter account claiming that it's going to be announced tomorrow. The ESC Twitter account just posted that they'll have 'more information shortly'.

Obvz it wouldn't really be surprising if this is the case but jumping the gun a little bit I think ~~

edt: apparently it was announced on Israeli TV so maybe it is real but it seems weird that they'd get that news before everyone else ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really can't see how they'd be able to run it now, and at least this way Netherlands will still get to host a proper contest next year.

Posted by: gooddelta Mar 18 2020, 08:18 AM

Very sad if true. Be interesting to see if the favourites from this year come up with better or worse songs, backing The Mamas if they can write something incredible in a year. You also wonder if Melfest would just become a Mamas selection show, for example, or if they’d run it like normal but without the prize of going to Eurovision.

I wish they’d just run Eurovision as a sent in live performance video contest, we could still vote at home as audiences as normal, and juries could assess remotely too.

Posted by: J▲hq Mar 18 2020, 09:20 AM

I'm not believing anything until it's posted on Eurovision.tv. Either the EBU decided before everyone went home yesterday and they could've made an official announcement then, or a final decision hasn't been made. And with a couple of weeks until construction on the stage would in theory need to start, I think they'd still be trying to exhaust all possible options at this point.

It doesn't make sense to me either that due to the 'rules', none of the songs selected this year would be eligible next year? We're living in unprecedented times, surely the rule book is out the window laugh.gif

Posted by: ScottyEm Mar 18 2020, 09:31 AM

Postponing is, for most, the preferred option as I’m sure it is for The EBU, delegates etc. But to have everyone available again for a large chunk of time later in the summer and to then get everything ready for May 2021 in a shorter time period is an almighty ask. I also envisage the remote live performances being problematic for less wealthy countries who simply cannot compete with the likes of Sweden, Germany etc.

Posted by: diva thin muffin Mar 18 2020, 09:58 AM

I really hope they postpone rather than cancel fully. Would be a weird year to have no Eurovision at all sad.gif

Posted by: Liаm Mar 18 2020, 10:28 AM

My preferred option from a selfish point of view is to just perform from their own countries, so we still have a contest this year. There is literally nothing to look forward to so selfishly I'll be really upset if we get nothing at all from this year sad.gif

Idk though, I really don't want a year withou Eurovision but I also wouldn't mind if they just postponed it, even if it was until next year. It seems unfair on Netherlands to not have a proper contest to host, and unfair on the artists who worked to win National Finals or sent in songs to be internally selected but just don't get a chance to show them off. To just pause and let everyone have their chance later I think is a good idea too.

Posted by: Mart!n Mar 18 2020, 10:39 AM

A part of me wants it postpone till 2021 as I hate the British entry, than again it be a shame for other artists who have potential to win

Posted by: I. :II: z Mar 18 2020, 11:13 AM

This seems like a realistic option, I wouldn't be surprised if that is the announcement, I'd be very sad though if there was no way to find out a result of some description to this contest, the songs make up one of the better years in recent memory and you have to imagine not every act will be able to make it to 2021.

Postponed to 2021 s reported by Dutch News organistation NOS

"according to EBU, broadcasters and the city of Rotterdam it is the most logical scenario for everybody that the 65th edition will be held in Rotterdam. We are very proud of Rotterdam as they are willing to take on this role in 2021."

This came with a warning that in these extraordinary times no garantues can be given.

See y'all in a year guys

Posted by: Vülker Mar 18 2020, 01:37 PM

CRAP!

I mean, generally it wasn't a great year, and it's fair on Rotterdam to host it properly next year - but what about Iceland's and Lithuania's tracks that would surely give them their best results ever, and even others like Azerbaijan or Russia that whilst not the best are going to be difficult to top! sad.gif

Fully expect MelFest 2021 to go ahead as normal and for The Mamas not to show up in Rotterdam next year either sad.gif

MESS.

Posted by: LMLou Mar 18 2020, 01:45 PM

Disappointing of course but was to be expected. I was hoping they would maybe have no audience like some TV shows are doing but I kinda expected this decsion
This whole year is gonna feel so weird, is anything actually going ahead over the next few months

Posted by: I. :II: z Mar 18 2020, 01:47 PM

I do hope something can be done for the tracks and the artists selected, I feel so bad for them, particularly all the touted contenders. '

Anything could happen from here on out, I think the only thing we can assume is that Eurovision 2021, if it goes ahead, will be in the Netherlands. I do hope that most broadcasters will stand by their acts at least, particularly for the likes of Samanta Tina who've made this a career goal.

Posted by: Liаm Mar 18 2020, 01:50 PM

Knew it would happen but it's gutting sad.gif It's awful for the artists who worked hard etc. too, to get their chance but won't have it - I wonder if many of the artists will carry over to next year? Melfest is bigger than Eurovision so I doubt Sweden would, but maybe in the case of internals they can come back with a different song. James Newman can not tho x

Posted by: AdamAloud Mar 18 2020, 01:51 PM

Whilst very sad, absolutely the correct decision.

I didn’t think there would be a year for the world worse than 2016... but here we are

Posted by: gooddelta Mar 18 2020, 02:13 PM

Incredibly sad news sad.gif

Expected, but such a shame for all involved, and it's so sad these songs and probably a lot of the artists won't get a chance to compete. I expect the majority of these artists will be internally selected for next year, however.

Posted by: SKOB Mar 18 2020, 02:13 PM

Sad, but expected as ALL events are being cancelled.

Posted by: LexC Mar 18 2020, 02:28 PM

Extremely sad day for everyone involved but ultimately it's fairest on Rotterdam being able to host Eurovision on its own terms rather than some sort of 'zombie Eurovision' and safest for all involved. Although the Eurovision flame may have been temporarily blown out, the Fuego will burn again soon, this time brighter than ever *.*

The statement goes one step short of saying all the artists will be welcome back to 2021 or clarifying if the 2020 songs will be allowed to compete next year and I guess its for the individual countries to decide how they want to integrate any artist that wants another shot in 2021 into next winter's national finals. Like Italy/Sweden it's, if anything, a bigger achievement to win internally than at Eurovision itself so they'll at least have that but it'll be an interesting storyline going into next year at least. My inner sense of fair play says that this year's artists ought to get first refusal on going again but obviously not everyone is going to want or be able to.

Posted by: diva thin muffin Mar 18 2020, 02:43 PM

I'm so over 2020 can we just skip to 2021 already pls

Posted by: diva thin muffin Mar 18 2020, 02:49 PM

Would be perfect now if someone would just make an unofficial online version of this open for everyone to watch where the contestants still get to compete. Lots of Euro fans online, wouldn't be surprised if someone did something of the sort to make up for this.

Posted by: Bré Mar 18 2020, 03:13 PM

Well, that sucks! I was kind of expecting it but I swear they said just a few days ago that outright cancelling wasn't yet an option they were considering, these things develop too quickly. Ah well, onwards to 2021 assuming things will be normal by then lol x

Posted by: STREAMSTUPIDLOVE Mar 18 2020, 03:29 PM

Posted by: dan.G Mar 18 2020, 04:40 PM

I don’t see why there’d be two eurovision’s. it’ll just be too bad for the performers that were meant to be there this year I think if they aren’t invited back with a different song next year.

Not really as the host of the second one wouldn't have time to prepare, nor would countries who are financially struggling be able to afford two contests in one year, as nice a suggestion it is.

Already been happening since 2003 and I don't accept other opinions

Posted by: diva thin muffin Mar 18 2020, 04:46 PM

There's already talk about live-stream events hosted by fans and such on Reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/eurovision/comments/fkpzwu/reurovision_2020_a_livestream_event/

Youtuber XAZ is doing one in early April. Not sure how it'll work but I applied to be a juror just for fun! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzAHYsGTc9A

Posted by: LexC Mar 18 2020, 04:50 PM

I mean they've theoretically got Berlin on standby should Australia ever win/the winner can't host the contest so if they rule that there has to be new songs for 2021 I guess you could have some kind of "DVD Bonus Content" contest in, say, January 2021 if people want an opportunity to present the 2020 songs as they were initially intended (i.e. with a full light and projection show) but it probably wouldn't be an option for every broadcaster (like no way could Bulgaria afford that as well) and probably wouldn't be competitive.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Mar 18 2020, 04:56 PM

At least we'll have Will Ferrell's Eurovision film this year (wrapped up filming in the UK a few months ago)!

I knew this'd happen, I'd really rather the people who are organising ones to contact each other and try and make it one big thing where we can make a sort of estimated result rather than a group of streamers all doing their own ones, perhaps liased through some of the fansites (though that's not speaking for my fansite).

Posted by: dan.G Mar 18 2020, 05:16 PM

perhaps a buzzjack plug (or plug alternative) session could be ran, if this live-stream event doesn't come to fruition?

I think that will eventually happen. One of these events will start to gain critical mass and it will snowball from there.

This epidemic could last a lot longer than some are expecting.
That'd also mean the winner would only have 6 months or less to prepare

I guess you are right there, seems weird though that cancellation is the ONLY option at this point when the event is still 2 months away. It does no even need calendar adjustments like sport events do.

I guess the only reason they’re not just showing music videos/specially recorded performances instead and having a vote is because Amsterdam misses its chance to host? More expected rather than outright confirmed, but it seems that almost a quarter of artists/countries have announced already that they're sticking together next year, it'll be up to the individual broadcasters.

Albania could be one of the exceptions. FiK will go on regardless, but it existed without a Eurovision connection before so could do so again for a year.

Posted by: Liаm Mar 21 2020, 11:25 AM

Yeah I've just seen a fair few wanting to go and some confirmed, it's not a done thing. I can't see why most of the internals won't, and in terms of for example Italy, if they did want to go with Diodato again then it would have no bearing on Sanremo because it existed before Eurovision, it existed when Italy wasn't in Eurovision and it wasn't even always used to select their entry after they came back (it was always a song or artist from Sanremo, but not necessarily the winner).

Sweden have already confirmed the Mamas won't be their rep for 2020, Melfest is bigger than Eurovision but it's more tied to it than Sanremo is. That's not to say it wouldn't work without being tied to Eurovision, but I can see why they're doing it whilst it's sad for the Mamas. I'd be raging if Dotter won Melfest tho ofc laugh.gif I think they should at least give the Mamas a guaranteed slot to compete again though!

Posted by: LexC Mar 21 2020, 11:43 AM

I've been enjoying the yesteryear World Snooker classics on TV, replacing what would have currently been the actual 2020 event, which I think is tentatively pencilled in for later this year, but I'm not certain.
Anyway...
It got me wondering if something similar was planned for Eurovision week/night? Yep, an evening of snooker, lol.
But seriously, I'd enjoy an evening of yesteryear Eurovision highlights. Tbh, I'd be more likely to tune in to that, as a lot of the modern mainstream music sadly doesn't appeal that much to me.

Did anyone watch Germany's own Eurovision semi-final 2020 last night? It was a very long show (almost 4 hours) with performances of national finals or music videos of all 40 artists. Viewers voted these ten countries for next Saturday's grand final: Iceland, Lithuania, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Sweden, Malta and Denmark.

Final will take place in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie hosted by Barbara Schöneberger. German act will perform as special guest star and there are rumors some of the ten finalists will perform live in Hamburg.

A very solid top ten from Germany. Had Eurovision taken place I expect it would have comprised most of those countries, albeit maybe including Germany themselves too.

I'm unsure if Denmark/Malta/Azerbaijan would have been quite as huge as various online polls suggest, but I could definitely see all of the others being top ten.

Is anything happening this Saturday regarding anything to do with this year’s concert?

Posted by: J🐠hq May 12 2020, 02:51 PM

Yes, the BBC are airing a few hours worth of content, see the following thread

Anyone watching Eurovision celebration in a few minutes?

Yes. You can watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNk7fAqYLiw

They are playing the songs in their official running order!

Sweden - 7.5/10

I always have to imagine that the Swedish songs are from a different country before I can judge how I feel about them - so as to offset any possible negative feelings I might have because it's from Sweden. I feel the anti-Sweden sentiment online might have rubbed off on me.

Move is quality.

Poor Belarus getting that death slot laugh.gif. I think Australia would have struggled 3rd on.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:12 PM

Belarus 4/10

A very weak hook.

Posted by: Lukuzz May 12 2020, 07:15 PM

Nothing blown me away so far, I do really like Australias song though but do agree with it probably struggling in that position if it were real

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:16 PM

Australia 8/10
North Macedonia 4.5/10
Slovenia 8/10

The revamp of Voda is magic. Top 10 for me.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:19 PM

This switch is awful.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:23 PM

Lithuania 7.5

It's good but certainly not top 10 material for me.

Posted by: Cameron May 12 2020, 07:24 PM

I actually think the North Macedonia and Slovenia run could now benefit Australia. Depending on what is after Ireland I think they are in a pretty good position to be borderline.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:25 PM

Story of My Life has just grown in stature as others have faded.
9/10

Posted by: Cameron May 12 2020, 07:27 PM

Yeah, Story Of My Life sounds so fresh sandwiched between Lithuania and Russia. it is so strange?

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:28 PM

Uno is ok. They have better songs.

6/10

Posted by: Lukuzz May 12 2020, 07:28 PM

Love Uno definitely would have been in my Top 3 of the year

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:32 PM

Beligium is my 41st favourite this year. Totally without charm or merit. It is the only song that actually gets on my nerves - I actively dislike it. They stole enough for Portishead in the 90s and now they steal from Glorybox.

0/10

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:34 PM

All of My Love is total class.

8.5/10

Posted by: Cameron May 12 2020, 07:34 PM

Yeah, I think it is safe to say that Belgium wasn't qualifying this year. I could have seen them coming 15th / 16th in the semi. Especially between Russia and Malta.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:36 PM

I think it may have been borderline. I'm sure it would have done better than Ireland. It had a lot of support out there.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:40 PM

Suus is still astonishing.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:47 PM

Croatia 6/10

A decent song.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:50 PM

Azerbaijan is all over the place.

Some of it (not much) is great and some of it is awful.

6.5/10

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:53 PM

Cyprus is a grower. That opening is real Orbital. The chorus is a bit repetitive but I like the music and the wordless vocalisations that he does.

7/10

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 07:56 PM

Attention is the blockbuster ballad to beat this year.

9/10

Posted by: Cameron May 12 2020, 07:58 PM

Attention is my favourite this year. Quality.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 08:00 PM

Israel 9.5

Everything you could want in a Eurovision multi-ethnic banger. There's zero filler in this.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 08:11 PM

The word play in the chorus just ruins Romania for me. The verses are amazing.

7.5/10

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 08:11 PM

Ukraine

2/10

Posted by: Cameron May 12 2020, 08:15 PM

Closing with Ukraine was a choice.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 08:16 PM

Italy

7.5/10

Posted by: Cameron May 12 2020, 08:17 PM

Semi 1 Official Running Order

1. Sweden
2. Belarus
3. Australia
4. North Macedonia
5. Slovenia
6. Lithuania
7. Ireland
8. Russia
9. Belgium
10. Malta
11. Croatia
12. Azerbaijan
13. Cyprus
14. Norway
15. Israel
16. Romania
17. Ukraine

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 08:19 PM

Germany 8.5/10

I used to love this more.

Posted by: LexC May 12 2020, 08:22 PM

Ukraine closing is a bit of a weird one - I guess Azerbaijan, Malta and Israel as the main other two closer candidates have both closed semis recently so it's being shared out more?

I still think it would have done a Triana Park and non qualified from the closing slot if it had gone ahead.

Posted by: Colm May 12 2020, 08:23 PM

My predictions for qualification would have been (in order of appearance)

Sweden
Australia
Lithuania
Russia
Malta
Azerbaijan
Norway
Israel
Romania
Ukraine

Australia, Ukraine and Israel would have been borderline and perhaps Croatia and Cyprus could have made the cut instead.

Netherlands

5/10

Posted by: AdamAloud May 12 2020, 08:47 PM

Perched for the inevitable release of 'Divlji Vjetre (Poppers O' Clock Remix)'.

Posted by: LexC May 12 2020, 09:03 PM

For everyone who's missing the annual parade of "journalists" interviewing the artists then trans icon Nikkietutorials has been doing a series of video calls and I think Damir Kedzo is a "friend of Tooji"

Posted by: Cameron May 14 2020, 08:00 PM

Armenia being sandwiched between Finland and Portugal screams that it would have been an obvious qualifier now.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 15 2020, 09:14 PM

I'm really missing that big Eurovision buzz that goes with Eurovision week, no type of voting kills the excitement of tomorrow night and Eurovision is the only time of the year I place bets.

Posted by: Riser May 16 2020, 01:21 AM

Which countries are doing a makeshift Eurovision broadcast tomorrow and are any of them available to watch online from outside the country? I'm interested, just not sure where to look.
