OMG Tartford wub.gif

Literally I had it on queue for quite some time now Music Instructor but with a different song Super Sonic (Brainbug Mix). I always find it surprising when someone besides me knows bops like these wub.gif...the only other one I would expect to have access to those songs would be Frankluck!!!

Good luck and I'm glad we're in same semi cheer.gif

Posted by: Bré 🐠 3rd May 2020, 07:25 PM

There are quite a few songs I've already heard outside of the contest again this month but not quite as many as last time, and it looks like the majority of the songs I already know are in the opposite semi from me so yay for being in the fresher semi for me! Some early hype in semi 2 for Aeroche, Cowtermont and D'yermak'er! ('I Wanna Be Blind' from the Turnstile/Mall Grab EP is up there among my fave songs of the year so far so would have probably been a guaranteed 18 from me if Jeff went with that instead but I liked 'Yes I Need My Generator' a fair bit too and this is a good opportunity to listen to it more again). Also sending early hype again to Jadakissnia over in semi 1 xx

Why So Sirius and Rolloland back-to-back near the start of semi 1 is going to be... a moment *_* also FSR Rontvia have sent an artist I had as a potential a few years back (with 'No More'), interested to hear this song!

We've had pretty amazing turnout in this contest, 68 entries is 4 more than we had in the previous biggest contest since BJSC 100! Wasn't sure we'd ever see a contest with this many entries again. (I mean it took a global pandemic to make it happen again but still...) Interestingly despite how massive this contest is we have very few long songs, the longest song is 6 and a half minutes and there are only 4 songs over 5 minutes, so plug sessions for this shouldn't end up being too excessively long ~

(Unfortunately we do seem to have lost Land of DW (as well as Taahino ofc) </3 not that this is a huge surprise following Frank's post in the semi results thread last month. Hope to see you returning at some point Frank).

I'm happy to host the plug sessions again ~ can probably go for Tuesday & Wednesday, hoping that won't be clashing with anything important?

First BJSC listenthroughs on actual plug.dj for a few months *.* (courtesy of someone figuring out a workaround for plug.dj still not working properly)

Sounds fantastic to me cheer.gif

Yes,I'm pleased to see my song being next to Why So Sirius in the running order. That's certainly when that semi will reach its peak.

Posted by: dan.G* 3rd May 2020, 07:47 PM

interesting to see Brainbug appear as I sent him to Halloween with 'Nightmare' - I haven't actually went and searched for his other songs, aside from the direct follow-up 'Benedictus' which was disappointingly very much a D-grade version of 'Nightmare'.

unfamiliar with most of these as ever except for 'Fet House Mode' which I found off Jupiter's PC, alongside 'Sirens' and 'New Person, Same Old Mistakes' (surprised this passed the veto considering it's Tame Impala and the song of theirs Rihanna covered). Plus I think I listened to 'Freaks' once but didn't think much of it, we'll have to see if it grows from being here.

Damn I was considering I Wanna Be Blind, feel like that's gonna come back and bite me ffs

Massive hype to Cadelicia initially tho wub.gif

Intrigued for Lex's entry as I heard a Moyka song earlier ('Backwards') and loved it! Kylienips' is one I've charted wub.gif and I'm pretty sure the Chestoria entry is a song that my brother stans! Excited to dive into this, sent a Rontvia recycle this time so I'm glad they're in my semi laugh.gif

I'm just hyped to see Mall Grab in BJSC whatever the song tbh! One of the most exciting names in dance music recently for me (following being introduced to him via you in Unknown Pleasures).

There aren't too many songs I know this time (under 10), I'm glad that Jupiter ended up sending 'Fet House Mode', hope it will do well, great entry!
And we'll see, maybe I'll enjoy the contest even more without me being the part of it after so many years laugh.gif

Wow thanks for the shoutout! I'm glad you like the song! Is it actually the shortest song ever sent to a contest? XD

Rolloland will surely be interesting! New Lexico with Spaces is actually sitting at no. 126 in Uhsting's Chart. I will give another week of listen! Other than that, it will be surely an interested contest (I see some Northvision Song Contest candidates as well (or maybe not because I might have seen it on someone else's chart lol unsure.gif ) )

EDIT: I remember NHS70. Really good song! I charted it quite close at the time it was released. smile.gif

Posted by: Klumzeased* 4th May 2020, 12:34 PM

I see a couple former Klum representatives in semi one ohmy.gif Hopefully Montaigne and Rebecca & Fiona do their countries proud!

My entry this month has been a potential for a while so I'm not head over heels obsessed with it like some of my other entries, all I hope for is a qualification and we're at least on par if not better than last month's result! It's very early 10's European summer holiday hit that never crossed over to the UK.

Posted by: imaduck 4th May 2020, 04:27 PM

I was expecting to see Spaces in PopJustice this month, but the biggest bit of pop in the last month appears here instead.

Some of the songs that got through veto here are insane, but I guess I come here with a popjustice understanding of what's big, and not a buzzjack one.

Muna can already have all my points.

Posted by: Bré 4th May 2020, 04:49 PM

I'm a little mystified as to how Moyka is apparently such a big deal with a song that has less than 5,000 views on YouTube. Even for a niche online interest act that seems extremely low.

I see Hypnotized got through over there, so there's definitely some choice allowances on both sides laugh.gif

I was surprised to see MUNA allowed here too actually but I can't pretend I've heard the song, think they're another that teeter somewhere in the middle of being niche and being well known enough.

I think are veto processes are very different, which is probably why these things happen, we really primarily look at the charts and our own forum, so Hypnotized is an easy yes but MUNA, Frida Sundemo & The Aces would be laughed out at a glance though (as the aces were this month). A suprising amount of cross over this month, a lot of songs from either this or last round of PJSC.

(FLETCHER however seems to haunt both contests every other round like an underachieving but virilent strain of gonorrhea)

Posted by: Jack 4th May 2020, 08:13 PM

I've never really liked FLETCHER before but I think Forever is a bop! sad.gif

Posted by: Bré 4th May 2020, 08:33 PM

The standards of what can be considered a significant level of discussion on BuzzJack are a lot lower than on PopJustice as we're a much smaller forum but even by those standards there was nearly no interest on this forum for (at least these songs by) any of The Aces, FLETCHER, MUNA or Frida Sundemo, there was more attention for Purple Disco Machine than all of those combined probably. The only notable mark against any of those songs was them having some prior success in BJSC (The Aces less so than the rest) which in itself usually doesn't feel like enough to veto a new song that it doesn't appear many people will know.

I am not above the occassional dick pic, I will not deny that.

Posted by: Quarantilas 5th May 2020, 09:23 AM

The veto is incredibly subjective. Its by its nature never going to be something that gets a universal agreement really so I just work off what evidence I have in front of me at the time.

Using Muna as the example maybe it helps if I explain my thought process, I’m just one person out of the group but hopefully it’ll help demystify some of the inner workings of the veto. This is what we are working off for the song in question:

MUNA - Stayaway 15
- artist came 34th in BJSC 83 and 2nd in BJSC 92 3+12
- appeared in 3 personal charts, 2 of which are BJSC participants (Jay, Jupiter)
- mid level blog coverage

2nd and 34th is a mixed bag, suggesting that they don’t have a consistent hit rate every time they are entered. The last entry was over three years ago and the contest has changed a lot in this time, so not necessarily the same audience is there. Two participants have charted the song, but that’s it for on-site buzz which suggests it’s not too widely known and those that know it haven’t been “oh my f***ing god you must listen to this” about it hence the lack of genre forum discussion. The lack of general internet background noise suggests it’s not likely to be something that a lot of people will have been knowingly exposed to without specifically looking it out.

There’s not enough evidence in front of me to show that this is a really widely known track and so my vote is to allow it through. Past performance comes into it for me when the artist has a consistent hit rate and that success is quite recent. In a case like this I don’t give it quite so heavy a weighting in my deliberations.

Dream contest for me is zero vetoes. All I can do is look at the evidence in front of my and decide if in my opinion it is likely that the song is quite well known among the participants and therefore giving that person a leg up in the competition. It’s a hard line to walk and I’m not saying we get every decision correct, because we absolutely don’t, but we do our best with what we can see and feel to make the right judgement. Where we get it wrong and veto a track, we have an appeals process that I strongly encourage the use of.

MUNA - Stayaway 15

- appeared in 3 personal charts, 2 of which are BJSC participants (Jay, Jupiter)
- mid level blog coverage

A #1 hit in my (now defunct) personal chart! wub.gif Welcome to the contest African Grey, I hope Stayaway does brilliantly for you. Unfortunately we're not in the same Semi!

QUOTE(Quarantilas @ May 5 2020, 10:23 AM) *

You're doing the job and I'm sure everyone loves you for it, I think people have a habit of self-punishing songs they don't think should be in anway.

If it was up to me I'd let every song in, and we'd bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy.

Posted by: Mart!n 5th May 2020, 12:54 PM

Montaigne was one of my acts that represented Kylienips, at the time the track I used did not do that well.

On the other hand, I just had to use Lapsley as I previously entered Station a few years back, I'm hoping Womxn will do better. I was going to change it at the last minute as I found something else, but I stuck with it, in the end.

I feel like the nations towards the top of my votes are less predictable than usual ;o the semi was off to a rocky start but ended up with 12 I really wanted to vote for.

Posted by: LexC 5th May 2020, 09:55 PM

My main hype target from semi 1 is New Lexico Lotunia!

Posted by: Bré 5th May 2020, 10:20 PM

Sending all my hypes to Dobago in semi 1, the DANCE WITH THE DEAD vibes are strong wub.gif (was this a song that you had as a potential for Club Bizarre? I feel like it could have done really well in that!) Lotunia's was a song I'd heard before as it was a winner on PopJustice, remembered quite liking it there but it stood out even more here, interested to see if it might come close to replicating its PJSC success here as it seemed like a very unexpected winner over there!

Hype to the eternal underdogs Harmonica and Niceland too, let's get them both to the final at the very least this time pls x

And also showing some love for an excellent AQ pick from Ojnoj ohmy.gif

Semi 2 plug session coming same time tomorrow!

It was indeed yes. I wasn't sure which to send to what initially but ultimately I did end up preferring Red Eyes so sent that & held back the more in-your-face track for this. I guess this may well have done better there but who knows!

Posted by: gooddelta 6th May 2020, 03:31 PM

Voted. A fairly decent semi with a very good top five! Semi 2 has fewer songs that I absolutely love, but a lot more that I enjoyed overall.

I'll leave doing odds for the final but in terms of predictions I can see New Lexico, Lotunia, Ojnoj, Dobago, Pupok, Flynnonda, Thelonia, Altyr, Bhangra, Tartford, African Grey, Jadakissnia, Cor Lupus, Aeroche and Persephonia doing well among numerous others.

It is hard to see past a New Lexico win for sure, but Ojnoj have got a strong AQ that should have very wide appeal and Lotunia will do very well too.

Posted by: Jade 6th May 2020, 07:17 PM

FYI mine should've been 9 as Dan said he forgot to woot afterwards kink.gif

yes 'same amount of woots as hotly tipped New Lexico' is what I'm clinging onto right now

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 6th May 2020, 07:20 PM

That's encouraging! Let's hope it can translate into an actual final position happy.gif I've qualified 3 times in the last 15 contests show me some sympathy

Posted by: Klumzeased* 6th May 2020, 07:43 PM

don't let plug fool you! I came top in my plug semi based on woots and then finished bottom in the final after finishing somewhere around 14th in the semi smile.gif

Posted by: LexC 6th May 2020, 07:46 PM

Many a false hope has been built up with the plug stats in the past before anyone wants to over-interpret them!

Posted by: Bré 6th May 2020, 07:50 PM

People who come on plug.dj are also very notoriously not as generous towards pop songs as the wider participant base so it's quite heavily skewed xx

Posted by: Commander Cody 6th May 2020, 08:44 PM

god I wish I was there for the plug session but I had work </3 AOA deserved better tbh

I’m not gonna read into plug stats, I don’t know the audience makeup from that day so the number might be misleading, like my entries usually get a decent reaction but an average of 6-7 woots might also mean your entry will fade into the background and the road to doing well is gonna be that much more of a struggle, so it cancels out and I don’t really have expectations tongue.gif

Semi 2 felt very sonically consistent, so many songs with the same kind of lowkey but groovy vibe (my own entry very much included ofc) - it's making it very difficult to rank my favourites as there isn't really one song that stands out massive above all the others (almost felt more like Club Bizarre than BJSC in that regard) but definitely enjoyed it more on the whole than semi 1. Will aim to do a relisten and vote on Friday.

We have to stan Kathaldazia's comeback tho clap.gif and sending some hype to Aelandor, East Rukahavian, Flynnonda and Hushkanukia as well among others ~~

It has just been announced on RTE that my entry has won Schoolovision! w00t.gif

A school in West Cork has won 'Schoolovision', a primary schools' version of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Twenty-three pupils at Cappabue National School in Bantry recorded and released the rap song on climate change three months ago.

"One Small Change" went viral on social media and the principal was invited to enter the rap in the Schoolovision competition.

Schoolovision has been held on the eve of the Eurovision Song Contest for the past 12 years, with primary schools from up to 30 countries taking part annually.

Votes were cast online this morning and Ireland was announced as the winner.

Norway came second and Austria's entry was in third place.

Norma Healy, principal of Cappabue National School said everyone is thrilled to have won the competition.

She said it has been an exciting few months for the pupils who are now working on a second rap.

Ms Healy said they were supposed to appear on Good Morning America via Skype on World Earth Day but the appearance was cancelled because of Covid-19.

She said winning Schoolovision is the perfect consolation prize.

The pupils decided to make the video after being shocked by the amount of litter they found when they went to help clean up local beaches.

Music producer, songwriter and rapper Garry McCarthy came to the school to help the pupils - some as young as five - have their voices heard.

Past pupil, videographer Elaine Lucey, shot the video.

Wow! That's a piece of good news! Congratulations to Cappabue National School!

Another day is no big deal. We can just pretend the one week gap was intentional to respect the old standard of BJSC not happening during Eurovision week xo

Can’t we just pretend the votes had to be sent to the USA to be processed?

another thing to add to the list of thing s being delayed/cancelled this year x

Oh, I gave Seyetana a 5 and I nearly give Iz points, so shame on you all, even if I don't remember it now x
