9 Perfume Genius Slip Away from 2014's "Queen" to this, Perfume Genius clearly knows how to open a new era with a statement. A theatrical anthem of love defying oppression, it's elegant but highly bombastic with it's post-chorus instrumental flurries |

8 Paramore Hard Times Already embracing their pop side on the likes of Still Into You, Paramore dive even further in with a colourful new wave corker HAAARD TIIMES. and it's hard not to love that perky guitar riff and Hayley's charismatic performance here, certainly the band's shining moment for me so far! |

Hard Times (and all the rest of their singles) should have done much better than they did officially! Really great songs!

6 Drones Club Hurricane Trifoski topped the BJSC mountain once again with cryptic british group Drones Club and their futuristic house banger, it kinda sounds like if you took one of AlunaGeorge's dancehall jams from last year and filtered it with robot vocals. in a year full of dance songs with no real 'drops' it was refreshing to have this to rave out to! |

Drones Club was the best BJSC winner by far last year! Love everything about it, just wish they were a bit more popular!

4 Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Holy Mountain it's good when artists come out with a curveball, and i can't think of a bigger surprise than this goofy stomper of a track from Noel and his crew of birds! a track so filled to the brim with instrumentation it almost overflows- the psychedelic backing, a tin whistle hook, the heavy sax riffs (this is where it starts to sound eerily similar to Plastic Bertrand's Ca plane pour moi!). It's so much damn fun though, and hearing this amongst the Top 40 that one week made it sound almost otherworldly by comparison. Today's musical landscape could stand to have a few more Holy Mountains i reckon ~ |

3 Portugal. The Man Feel It Still the fluke indie hit sweepstakes (to quote a Todd In The Shadows phrase) still going strong! an alternative rock band who've rolling on since 2004 without much recognition (some buzzjackers might remember their very good "Purple Yellow Red and Blue" track from UP), Portugal Dot The Man wormed their way into the brains of the public with Feel It Still- an immensely lovable track with a tight bass groove, little horn stabs and the falsetto vocal adds an extra spice to the mix. Playing almost like a rockier version of Pharrell's "Happy", this track has a sorta universal appeal that saw it cross over even to the UK Top 40 despite being sabotaged at almost every turn. Quality wins over sometimes folks x |

2 Paradis Toi Et Moi One of Trifoski's big hits from 2017 (the song is actually from 2016 but i'm allowed to cheat and include it here) and i'm very glad i eventually settled on this for BJSC 92. a gorgeous little instrumental here with this sombre atmosphere and plucky hi-hat riff while the singer's voice melts over the track like it was MADE for it. And that doesn't even mention the haunting little synth breakdown (that melodically sounds lifted from a certain Skall entry, we may never know). dancing in the dark has never sounded this romantic, and with enough time to settle it'll make you want to memorise French just to properly sing along! |

i might? i might ~ 1 Calvin Harris feat. Frank Ocean & Migos Slide the graphic at the start was a clue all along!! much like Sir Bruno last year, Calvin Harris brought some much-needed FUNK to the charts, and "Slide" was the big moment- it's undeniable how fantastic this sounds from those weird synth blasts that just storm in after the intro, Frank Ocean sounding right at home on this laidback sun-drenched groove, to the great little dashes of guitar that really elevate the second chorus, to Migos getting loads of time to shine, to Frank's pitch-shifted alias proudly splashing out on a Picasso painting or something. with all the emotions music can evoke, sometimes the most essential is a tune that makes you feel like you're fucking awesome and cool and shit. not that i needed any reassurance, but who am i to complain when it sounds this good? |

Fantastic top 4 all in all, Slide & Holy Mountain were fantastic switch ups for both artists and ofc. Toi Et Moi was one of my favourite BJSC finds of the year, that type of intimate French synthpop always sounds lush. Have been enjoying Feel It Still recently too, I wasn't sure of it at first but it's very unique and catchy, hopefully can finally become a big hit this year!

Love all of that Top 4! Slide took a while to grow but it is a nice song, and Feel It Still is still going strong for me now - looks like it's going to get itself a healthy chart run officially!

Some absolutely amazing songs here
Slide as #1 is well deserving, one of my favourite songs of 2017 too and was constantly on my playlist Feel It Still #3 is amazing too I really love Portugal. The Man and their whole album is brilliant, but nothing quite beats Feel It Still. It's my most played song of the past year for good reason! Hard Times is much similar to above I've always had a soft spot for Paramore and 2017 was the year of Paramore for me. I like all of their albums but usually there' only 5-6 songs I regularly go back to. But no. After Laughter is an album I can play over & over again without getting bored and without forgetting any of the lyrics to any of the songs. It's grown on me so much and even outranks The Killers' Wonderful Wonderful as my favourite album of 2017 (despite The Man being my favourite song of 2017). Speaking of The Killers, lovely for Run For Cover to be here too! 2x Lorde, N.E.R.D., and Oh Wonder great too Brilliant EOY |

OMG SIR CALVIN HARRIS WHAT A LEGEND
amazing that he bookends your top ten this year when you hated his 2016 output Slide and Feels are both proper tunes. I'd also put Rollin on the same level as those. Also like Feel It Still, Havana and Humble from your top 20, basically all the commercial hits (shoutout to Little Dark Age and especially f*** They though). Good to see You Don't Know Me in another top 40 too. |
