They don't show on the iTunes chart on release week. But the sales are still counted towards the official chart.

this is the new 'Why is 'What Now' back in the chart?'
(pre-orders only count towards the iTunes chart when they chart as pre-orders, instead of the song getting an instantly high position because of built up pre-orders)

IT's already number 5 BTW... But yeah, it doesn't count as the day of release, so it needs to climb like old times.. but the sales on the chart is still count of course.

Yes... if it wasn't for Sam Smith would have had 3 great #1s on a trot
Ed Sheeran & Rudimental the week after
Posted by: liamk97 22nd March 2015, 01:11 PM
Are we sure Ed Sheeran will be #1 next week? The pre-orders haven't suggested #1 to me, even if it is added to the original version.
Posted by: JosephStyles 22nd March 2015, 01:19 PM
Nice to see Cheryl climbing a bit more now, up to #84! Still not gonna be top 40 at the end of the week and might not even re-peak but oh well.
Luke Friend's pre-order is #809, really impressed at how well this is doing with no support, wondering if it might still make the top 40?
Posted by: mr_aly 22nd March 2015, 01:24 PM
I'm very pleased with this #1. I've loved every #1 this year except for Sam Smith (but I know we haven't exactly had a lot to choose from).

I can't see what else could be #1 for a few weeks after Jess, apart from Ed, mind you I would prefer Jess to hang on to the #1 spot for a few weeks, rather than having RudieEd
Posted by: Chez Wombat 22nd March 2015, 01:33 PM
Hold My Hand took a while to click, but it's really feel good and far superior to the rather lacklustre Right Here, feels quite similar to her Clean Bandit collaborations, but not enough to detract from it and it's not like both artists' sounds are worlds apart.
I agree that Sam Smith is a blemish on the otherwise flawless run of number 1s this year, I'm surprised, I'm not normally this pleased by the number 1s (I actually like Bloodstream as well, so that would pretty much keep the streak going should that get there)

If Jess is expected to have big sales this week then I can't see her losing the #1 spot to Ed and Rudimental. I can see them perhaps making the Top 5.
Posted by: SLlewellyn 22nd March 2015, 01:55 PM
Bar "Bloodstream" next week (and even then I'm not convinced), I don't think we'll get a new number-one until Carly Rae Jepsen on April 27th if it can become even more popular in the coming weeks. 5 weeks for "Hold My Hand" then potentially, unless something else climbs ("FourFiveSeconds" or "Hold Back the River"). Quite liking these long-running #1s actually, go 2015!

Oh I think that's a certainty My logic is that he's done better than G.R.L. did with Lighthouse on pre-orders (let's not forget it went top 100 when first added) so should at least make the top 50 overall, top 40 hopefully!!

5 weeks for Jess is a bit of a tall order I think, if her sales drop off along the way, something is bound to climb or a big new release mid week, unless the Voice winner goes and releases a single, but I doubt that will happen, previous winners from the Voice have not released a single straight off.

Songs used to have to climb from the very bottom of the chart when there were no pre-orders whatsoever in the iTunes singles chart so it's a bit different nowadays.

The new rules make the chart so much more interesting to follow on release day now, rather than Jess Glynne making #1 at 12:20am and that being the end of things. Much like the old days with the Single EP Pre-orders.

Really? Considering nobody from that show has ever had a hit single I highly doubt it even if they tried that strategy.

Probably the majority of people who download songs on iTunes wouldn't care about the charts anyway, they just want the song that they like as soon as possible without getting it in a illegal way.

'Hold My Hand' will be the best #1 of the year! Really hope 'Bloodstream' can get there though as that'd be the first #1 of the year I PROPERLY love (bar 'Uptown Funk' when it first came out but that got rather old).

'Hold My Hand' is glorious! It's easily the best thing she's done for me (well, excluding 'Rather Be'). 'Right Here' was so boring in comparison and felt rather limp for me. 'Real Love' was good, but got boring pretty fast.

Well not really. If they do actually follow the iTunes chart, they'll have already seen the effect of their pre-orders when the song is showing up for weeks before release.
I like that the pre-orders aren't added again on release. It makes much more sense and it's more interesting to watch songs actually climbing the chart. However, I'm a bit unclear as to what stage the pre-order sales do actually get added? Do the first midweeks show them or will they be a complete unknown until the final sales figures are released at the end of the week? Does that mean that if a new release is number 2 on the Friday chart update, it's possible it'll overtake when pre-order sales get added at the cut off point on Saturday night? That makes it quite exciting, particularly for those songs that have built up really strong pre-order sales but only make it to number 2 overall during the week. Means they could overturn quite a big gap when they're added in. Does that even make sense? I feel like I'm babbling now.

I think Ed Sheeran will definitely get #1 next week. Other songs in a similar situation from the past few years that got #1 (Spectrum, Gettin' Over You) weren't even top 40 the week before release but got #1 after the remixes. In this case the original has been top 40 for weeks, so that suggests to me it'll get #1. Unless the OCC are stupid and chart the song separately like they did with Sam Smith (but I think that might have had something to do with it being a charity single tbh).

Hopefully if Radio 1 give it some good airplay then a top 20 would be achievable even though it deserves to be a top 10 but no doubt it will end up following the peaks of Hannah Wants/Tough Love/Alex Adair and peak anywhere between 15 and 11

Pre-orders will download and get billed on the first day that a track is released. So, unless its a midweek release, for singles they practically are all sold on sunday. Therefore this sales will, like pre-orders have always been, show up on the first chart update.

Jess has a hefty lead but most held back songs usually fall as the week goes on so I doubt it'll be no1 for 5 weeks as some are predicting. I'm sure download sales will fall week on week but if it does well on streams she could get 3 weeks at the top. Heading for 120k this week I'd say or maybe 140 if the preorders are massive.

Nope, the only things Zedd and Selena related are
193. Break Free (feat. Zedd) - Ariana Grande

Hold Back The River is #2 combined; I expect it to build up a lead ahead of Lay Me Down and King starting from tomorrow with Chaos and the Calm's release which may give the song additional promo.
As a few of you have probably gathered from previous posts, I love Ed but I can't see Bloodstream hitting #1 next week; I don't think a lot of people know about it to be honest however that could change with the music video coming today. It has only had two weeks of airplay. I think top five is likely, though.

Well it's pretty unlikely Krept & Konan will get a #1 album or any longevity at all so I think Kendrick at least already has them beaten there There are lots of other major hip hop releases scheduled for this year as well. That is an impressive start for their pre-order but all it means is they have a loyal fanbase unless it actually holds up fairly well over the next few months which I can't see happening.

Yeah she was. Doesn't look like the weekend effect & the new releases were kind to her. Either that or the initial video hype has died down a bit.
Think it was made Radio 1's song of the day a few days ago so I am guessing it's on the verge of being playlisted so I would think we will see it rise again.
Posted by: ML Hammer95 23rd March 2015, 11:46 AM
It would be wrong to underestimate Krept & Konan though. Their last mixtape Young Kingz charted top 20 with no promotion, no singles and support only from urban radio. Don't Waste My Time became a massive underground anthem and got them signed to Virgin. Swear they won MTV Brand New this year too? The new album will be heavily promoted.
However, its unlikely to topple Kendrick, Kanye and the new Drake album. Maybe a more accurate statement would be biggest UK rap album since iLL Manors.

It's stupidity, I always thought this about preorders but in this era of streaming becoming stronger and downloads falling it doesn't make sense to hold a single back for weeks on end - it is detrimental to sales. You just have to look at the performance of say LMLYD and King. King would have sold a lot more with a release even 2/3 weeks earlier than 1/3.

And how do you quantify that? Both songs have been absolutely massive hits and are doing extremely well. They will also sell huge numbers overall in the longrun too.
Posted by: Doctor Blind 26th March 2015, 11:19 PM
I think the thing I hate more about the record industry these days (I've long bored everyone to death with the merits of OA/OS for a healthy record industry) is the accelerated release cycles and tendency for albums to be preceded by a new single or 'album cut/buzz single' every couple of weeks. It totally devalues the medium, kills off any momentum a single is likely to build-up, and blitzes the casual record buying public with an overload of new music. It also renders the campaign inert by the time the album is released with nowhere for it to go.
This is encapsulated well by the current Kanye West and Rihanna album campaigns, but possibly even better by Marina & The Diamonds which has successfully launched an album which sold 9,955 copies.

I don't see how the current Kanye West or Rihanna campaigns are at all an example of what you're talking about? They've had a total of 2 songs released each (3 for Kanye if 'FourFiveSeconds' is on his album as well but I don't think it will be). And the songs that have been released are all proper singles.

TBF, they have to buy it (it ain't streaming yet, is it?) before they judge whether they like it or not. You've got to remember anything she releases now (which isn't soundtracks ) are ANTICIPATED and the first brand new RiRi songs, since 2012! She's the biggest star on the planet right now. FFS is a huge song (success wise) so the demand for RiRi is higher than ever right now.
Just imagine if this was a US based forum and we were talking about the US iTunes charts the way we do the UK ones? The amount of Taylor/Ariana/Selena etc... songs that go to number 1 on iTunes there. This site would melt down haha.

Considering her debut charted at 138, and her second album only reached 31 despite a ~minor~ hit, FROOT debuting at number 8 with more sales than those two combined is an incredible achievement with no songs sent to radio or any promotion at all and the campaign must've helped somewhat as her 'close fan base' must have grown from somewhere between this era and the last.

Not to be NuVidcapper, but Towards The Sun is sooo much better than BBHMM. Largely because it has a melody.

It's apparently being boosted by some viral video (Tim mentioned it in the song thread). Once airplay kicks in I can see the song getting a top 10 peak with a lengthy-ish run

And how do you quantify that? Both songs have been absolutely massive hits and are doing extremely well. They will also sell huge numbers overall in the longrun too.
I'm comparing the more consistent sales of songs released earlier and that aren't held back for an over the top a mount of time. King sold well but wasn't hugely massive in its first week and thereafter it's downloads fell week on week in the way held back songs do.

I think Jess will deny Ed the #1; Hold My Hand still has a large lead on iTunes and she's performing on The Voice tonight too.

Performing on The Voice didn't seem to do much for Olly Murs or Jermain Jackman though, so we'll see.
On a related note... Sia has just announced on Facebook that she'll be performing tonight too. Assuming we'll get "Elastic Heart" (though it's peak of popularity) has been and gone in the UK, but part of me is holding out for another track.

Jess' sales are pretty underwhelming so far considering how well she did on pre-order so I really can't see her being able to fend off the combined force of Ed & Rudimental next week.

I think Ed Sheeran is definitely going #1 next week. I hope so if it gets Rudimental another #1.

I think Bloodstream is quite a good track, both the original and the remix so I wouldn't mind this Ed Sheeran song going number 1 to be honest

I think Jess will deny Ed the #1; Hold My Hand still has a large lead on iTunes and she's performing on The Voice tonight too.
Yeah as has been said, it may have a big lead but that means very little when sales are relatively low. I think Ed will get the #1.

I must be in the minority who's liking this new Rihanna track! Love her really "out there" tracks, Pour It Up is an all time fave of mine from her. Hopefully will be continuing to save the top 10 in the coming weeks!

Really hoping Ed can get #1, a great song and it's slightly that Sam Smith currently has more #1s than him as lead artist.
