1960s Top 40 Rate

Number 15s and Number 16s

While there were several different UK singles charts during the 1960s (with the NME weekly chart being the most widely followed), the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles and, subsequently, the Official Charts Company use the Record Retailer chart as their reference during this period, so that's the one we'll be using here. The 'Official' Singles Charts, as we know it, didn't begin until February 1969.

These series of rates will cover March 1960 (when the chart expanded to a Top 40 for the first time) to December 1969.

Below is a chronological list of all the singles which peaked at No.15 and No.16 in the UK during the 1960s. Rate your faves, and the winner will go through to the final Ultimate Top 40 (where it will join the best No.1, No.2 etc).

Number 16s - The Results!

Just ONE unloved track getting no votes here:

Viscounts - Shortnin' Bread

And also - another one of those fun ties at the top sad.gif But before we get to that, here's the rest:

3. Francoise Hardy - All Over The World 65

Four Tops - What Is A Man 37
6. Wilson Pickett - Hey Jude 36
7. Bob Dylan - I Want You 28

27. King Brothers - Mais Oui 2

The good thing about these '60s rates is it takes a lot less time to do laugh.gif Just 28 #16 peaking tracks here compared to the 153 that did it in the '90s!

Anyway, the top two classics getting 70 points each are:

Chiffons - He's So Fine 70
Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston - It Takes Two 70

To separate them, it's back to the individual votes to see who got the most +20s, +19s etc... One will go on to the Ultimate 1960s Top 40 Reshuffle, the other will do the same in the Runners Up Reshuffle:

Chiffons - He's So Fine - 20 (AH Gold) 19 (popchartfreak) 16 (richie) 15 (darkstar79)
Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston - It Takes Two - 20 (popchartfreak) 18 (richie) 18 (darkstar79) 14 (AH Gold)

Put it down to childhood nostalgia for an emotional melodic minor gem laugh.gif . It was a hit all over again in 1975 and remained well liked...

Hard to handle has the diasdvantage of being much covered, not all of them great, tarnishes the original a bit. Cloud 9 is the oops moment for me. Banging funk, as fresh today as the day it was unleashed smile.gif
