There are now 50 singles left. The only acts with more than one song are Madonna, Neneh Cherry and The Chemical Brothers. Your final task is to rate each and every song. Whether you've voted in the earlier rounds or not, make sure you have a say in deciding what the forum's favourite no.3 single is. The single with the highest average score will be the winner. There will be two weeks to vote.

The rules are the same as the last two years:

You can give your favourite song a score of 11. Only one 11 is allowed. All the other songs can be given a score from 0.5 up to 10. Half scores are allowed, for example 3.5, 6.5 etc. A score of 10.5 is not allowed. You can give as many 10s as you like but try and spread your scores out. You can give one score of -1 and a maximum of 3 zeros. You don't have to give any songs 0 if you don't want to. You don't have to give a song -1 either.

I tried spreading my scores out a bit here to stop 8-10s taking most of the board but even after that only eight ended up with a score lower than 5 and still didn't feel like giving a -1 anywhere, a great final list!

54 people voted which is more than the 49 who took part in my number 2 poll last year. The number 1 poll the year before had 39 voters. As my polls seem to be becoming more popular, I can confirm that there will be a poll of singles that peaked at number 4 next year. The Buzzjack list for number 4s starts at 1990 so I will spend the rest of the year compiling a list for 1952-1989 to be added on.

Not sure how S&M made it this far, I wasn't even aware it was particularly well thought of here. It's aged absolutely terribly and stood out like a sore thumb on that list. Yay for Shania Twain going out too, hugely overrated song and I've always felt like it's just me that thinks that x

Most of the dropouts I’ve either not been fussed about or I do really like them but think their place seems justified when there are so many classics in the field.

I would have liked Move Your Feet to be higher though - it’s a magical little composition.

I don’t think Like a Virgin is a 1/10 by the way - I was just ruthlessly spreading out the scores from -1 to 11!

There's perhaps a couple of reasons for that:
For comparison, in last year's #2 rate, the song placed 30th scored 7.051 which is 0.4 higher than American Idiot at 30th here, but as there were 100 songs in the final compared to 50 here, people may have distributed their votes accordingly, so maybe the equivalent is the song which finished 60th in last year's final, and that scored 6.531.
Then again, maybe some people just gave lower scores this time.

This is the first time I’ve participated and I thought the scoring was meant to be effectively a ranking rather than a mark out of 10, so my average score was close to 5 even though I thought it was a fabulous field.

I don’t much care for American Idiot though I love some of the others from that album, and overall when I ranked the 50 it was in the bottom 5, hence the 0.5.

but it's the same lately with all this rating threads, there are a bunch of troll people that give their three fav songs a 10, and the rest a 0, probably they haven't even heard them, it's just a trolling vote. It's obvious with a couple of people. Those votes should be filtered out and not counted. Said to see this :/

I think you've done the right thing. Anyone who spreads their scores out evenly will have more effect on the overall result. I always to that with my own vote. If someone gives most songs a high score, they are moving them all up by roughly the same amount so their vote doesn't effect the outcome as much. The same applies to those who give most of the songs a low score.

Same - I tried to give a fairly even spread using every number between -1 and 11 at least once or twice. I noticed some voters didn't give anything less than 5 or 6 which effectively just halves the power of the votes they're giving their favourites

I can't find the official video on youtube so here is the TOTP performance. From 1996, this was the third and final top 10 single for Robert Miles and one of two top 20 hits for Maria Nayler. If you've been keeping an eye on the writing credits, you will have noticed that one of the writers of this song also wrote Like A Virgin. The original version of One and One was recorded by the Polish singer Edyta Gorniak but it wasn't released until 1997.

No complaints about these results since I last posted where a few of my faves dropped out early, a lot of them since are decent songs but it's about the right place for them. Most of the songs left are pretty good now - even after trying to spread my scores out, I gave more than half of the remaining songs a 7 or above (and only three of them got less than a 5)!

I try not to give an excessive number of 9s/10s in rates to avoid diluting the scores of my faves but I don't go as far as giving <5 scores to songs that I don't feel deserve that low of a score just for the sake of it (apart from using my -1 on a song that's really more like a 2 in this rate just because I might as well use the -1). There were only a small handful of songs that made it this far which I genuinely think were worth less than a 6/10.

I think Julian's suggestion of 50pts down to 1pt is a good one. Each voter is still giving a score to every song in the final and each vote will have the same weight as the others. So if the majority are OK with that, I'll use that format for the number 4 singles next year.

I don't see much wrong with Adelita's vote or anyone else's. He gave 23 songs a score of 6 or more.

It's that Billy Steinberg again. We've already seen him as co-writer of Like A Virgin and One & One. The original version of Alone was recorded by him and Tom Kelly under the name i-Ten in 1983. I'd been waiting for Left Outside Alone to appear as my -1! The other songs I gave lowest scores to went out quite early so was hoping to make it 100% but not to be, never liked her voice and that song was so much worse than anything else.

Hey Ya! is a masterpiece, certain songs from around that time I loved and have totally bored of over the years due to overplay but that still sounds as tremendous as ever.

Pleased Together In Electric Dreams made the top 20 too, definitely one of my favourite songs made before I was born!

Despite being a big seller, the original version of Blue Monday only reached number 9 in 1983. It was this remix by Quincy Jones and John Potoker that took the song into the top 3 five years later. I think some of you based your score on the original while others based theirs on the remix so it's ended up finishing higher or lower than it should do depending on how you look at it.

Three of my 10s out in a row, had to happen sometime.
Blue Monday would have been a 10 for me either way - the original reigns supreme although I had The Supremes ahead by a hair's breadth as my 11, but the remix doesn't dilute the magic as much as, say, that remix of The Cure's Close To Me which was on TOTP from 1990 the other day. I guess we have to wait until Ultimate #9s in a few years time to see it get a fair crack from all sides.

Galvanize is fabulous and my favourite Chemical Brothers song by far. It’s another one with really clever rhythms and I love the Eastern flavour to it. Unfortunately it came out in early 2005, the darkest ever days for the singles chart.

The two Chemical Brothers songs land next to each other then, perhaps that shouldn't be too surprising but it's a great result for both really to be so close to the top ten!

Pleased with how well Left Outside Alone and Mad World did too, and would have been disappointed at that position for Blue Monday if it was the original, but the remix that took it to #3 was certainly not as good so it might be about the right place for it.

The first version of this was a Christmas song, It Must Have Been Love (Christmas For The Broken Hearted), released only in Sweden in 1987. It was re-recorded with Christmas references taken out in 1990 and featured on the soundtrack to the film 'Pretty Woman'. The song returned to the top 10 in 1993 after the film was shown on TV for the first time.

That's a strong top 6, with four left in from my first round votes, and all songs I like a lot (although I have preferences).

In the previous couple of these polls, nothing from before 1975 even made the top 50, so it goes without saying that Life On Mars did very well to make 10th this time (likewise the even older You Can't Hurry Love in 27th).

There will not be a winner from the 80s this time as this is the highest placed song from that decade. On the 'Hounds Of Love' album, the title has 'A Deal With God' in brackets but this part was left off the single release as the record company were worried it would not receive much airplay in religious countries. A remixed version reached number 6 in 2012 after it was used in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.

And so this is your winner. It was very close with Somebody Told Me scoring a total of 429 points, Missing 427 and Physical 423. Like the runner-up, Somebody Told Me wasn't a big success first time around, only reaching number 28 in 2004. After The Killers' next two singles reached the top 20, it was re-released and became a top 3 hit in 2005.

Ah Somebody Told Me is great, not my absolute personal favourite from the list but happy enough that it won.

Interestingly, looking at the week it hit #3, it almost certainly would have placed higher and not qualified for this competition if it wasn't for the infamous Elvis re-issue campaign.

Well I wasn't wrong maybe wouldn't have predicted it would win the thing though, but it is such a compelling tune, and with eighteen 10s it seems many agree! Missing is such a well-deserved runner-up, that made a huge impression on me in my early years of following the charts, an excellent end to the countdown.

Although given it only sold about 12k in its peak week you could also say that in almost every other week in history it would have peaked lower!
Missing and Somebody Told Me were both 9.5s from me and I only gave 2 10s so that means I absolutely adore them both. Missing is right up there with my favourite songs of the 90s but also really chuffed for Somebody Told Me and hadn’t realised there were so many other big fans of that song around.

Somebody Told Me certainly made a great start with each of the first four voters giving it 10. Later on, Physical took the lead but a run of scores of 4,6,2,7,7,6,7,7 towards the end meant it was overtaken by the Killers.

The gap between the first two was 2 points before the last two overnight voters. Bré gave both songs a score of 10 while Adelita gave them both 1 point so in the end they made no difference.

Great winner, a classic bit of 00s indie and still sounds great to this day (much less overplayed than Mr Brightside too which is a bonus) and Missing is wonderful as well. Physical was one of the best songs from last year, but I am glad it didn't win, 3rd ahead of some of these all time classics already feels a bit inflated.

'Physical' being so high up this list is maybe a little premature but I'd be surprised if its appeal to BuzzJack ever lets up to be fair, feels like a song that people will always look back on highly - and it is a great song, one of the best hit singles of 2020, so I'm not complaining. Love both of the top 2 & Keane at #4 as well so it an all well deserved top 5!

And to repeat my earlier observation again, this still seems like a crazy low average for a BuzzJack rate winner - I feel like nearly every other rate on BuzzJack at least recently had had a winner with an average of over 9 and certainly more than just two songs cracking an average of 8? I suppose to be fair most rates are just for a single artist so typically attract voters who are specifically a fan of that artist whereas this bunch was far more varied.

Blue Monday also won the first semi-final with Running Up That Hill the only other song in contention. Physical did much better here, finishing third.

Oasis' Whatever did very well in the first round and semi 1 but only ended up at #41. The haters worked hard in the final round.

Really enjoyed this thread. Superbly strong top 15 in the final rate. Thanks also for posting the earlier round votes under the different voting system - I'd been wondering how different they'd be (less than I expected, it turns out)

I stand by my comment at the time. I've never disliked the song, I've always thought it was just 'alright' but its use in Stranger Things has made me appreciate it a lot more.
