Avril Lavigne
Bite Me

1st single from forthcoming studio album
Released: 10th November 2021
Label: DTA Records / Elektra Records

Video

Biography

Avril Lavigne’s sharp, punk-informed pop can mean everything to any girl who’s ever felt like an outsider. Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1984, the singer/songwriter was initially positioned as a teen antihero—a rowdy, refreshing, slightly tomboyish counter to the coy, curated, overtly sexual stylings of chart dominators like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. And with the release of her 2002 debut album, Let Go, Lavigne didn’t just go against that glossy image, she shattered it, spiking her hooks with sass and sincerity and making loose neckties and a tank top a must-have fashion statement. The young spitfire faced love with intimidating confidence—she not only fell for the “Sk8er Boi,” she wrote songs with him—and approached poseurs with eye-rolling distaste, as expressed on her breakout single “Complicated.” Moving on from her teens, Lavigne’s kept that youthful spirit and outspoken edge alive, empowering girls to stand up for themselves (2004’s post-grunge earworm “Don’t Tell Me”), maybe steal a boy or two in the process (2007’s bubbly pop-punk anthem “Girlfriend”), and never, ever lose touch with their wild side (2013’s punky sing-along “Here’s to Never Growing Up”). She’s continually reinvented herself, too, moving effortlessly between romantic balladeer, stadium-rock warrior, and a “bombshell raisin’ hell”—while baring all, even through public breakups and an enduring battle with Lyme disease. It’s been enough to keep Lavigne in the spotlight, both on her own and as a major influence on notable admirers like Billie Eilish. - Apple Music

Tate McRae
feel like shit

1st single from forthcoming studio album
Released: 11th November 2021
Label: RCA Records

Video

Biography

All it took for Tate McRae to make the jump from international dance phenom to teenage pop sensation was a viral YouTube video—and a whole lot of talent, of course. After spending most of her childhood racking up competitive-dance awards, as well as reaching the finals on the 13th season of the TV show So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, the young Canadian surprised fans by uploading an original song to her already popular channel. Titled “One Day”, the captivatingly emotional ballad garnered millions of views by the end of 2017. More YouTube clips soon followed, each one marrying artful alt-pop melodies to beats and effects inspired by hip-hop and R&B that very much mirror her dancing style, itself a fusion of conservatory training with cutting-edge street moves. Another key quality—and a timeless one when it comes to teen pop—is a disarming honesty born out of being young and insecure. Add up these ingredients, and the result is a sound that shares quite a lot in common with the innovative future-looking pop of Billie Eilish, who along with her brother and collaborator FINNEAS penned “Tear Myself Apart”, the aching lead single from McRae’s first EP for RCA, 2019’s all the things i never said. The following year, the vocalist scored another hit with the self-penned “you broke me first”, a ferociously honest tale of heartache that proves that although dancing is what put McRae on the map, it’s music that has propelled her to stardom. - Apple Music

Biography

“We’re the ones that are pushing this boundary,” D-Block Europe’s Young Adz told Apple Music. “People who are signing urban music over here—they call it urban, we call it pop in the streets—that ain’t street music. We’re doing street, UK, wavy music, front-lining it.” They might not consider themselves pop, but by the most literal definition, DBE are just that. Chart positions, sold-out arenas and a nomination for the 2020 BRIT Award for British Group (before they’d even released a debut album) all make them one of UK rap’s most popular acts. D-Block Europe was originally a collective that called upon various London MCs, but Adz and childhood friend Dirtbike LB have emerged as both the engine room and executive board of the operation. They met at Sedgehill School in South London, where Adz was dropping mixtapes from the age of 13. He signed an ultimately fruitless major-label deal at 15 before coming under the patronage of NY rap heavyweight Jadakiss, who offered features, support slots and license to use The LOX’s D-Block Records name. With a series of self-released singles and mixtapes, Young Adz and Dirtbike LB took their place at UK rap’s top table during the late 2010s. Leavening trap’s chilly textures and portraits of road life with sticky Auto-Tuned hooks, their music is notable for its nimble wordplay and candour. While D-Block quickly gathered notoriety for their unfiltered bedroom braggadocio (“Kitchen Kings”), their willingness to open up about mental health and therapy (“Prescription Drugs”) has made them a standout presence in UK rap. It’s all been done independently by the industrious duo (63 new tracks released across three mixtapes during 2019 alone). They’ve continuously waved away offers from labels, confident that no one can guide their career as well as they can. Every award, Top 5 release or filled arena only strengthens their self-belief. “When you see Messi kick ball, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” said Young Adz. “Sometimes, the people have to choose you because they’re like, ‘We ain’t never going to see this again—from their sounds, from what they talk about.’ Our personalities shine through our music. We’re bigger personalities than rappers.” - Apple Music

Biography

Joel Corry
“Back Again” might seem like a strange title for a debut single, but not for Joel Corry: When the British DJ/producer dropped his first record in 2015, he was already well known to UK audiences from his appearances on the MTV reality show Geordie Shore. While that program captured its cast members’ romantic misadventures with tongue firmly in cheek, Corry has treated his musical career with far more seriousness, faithfully updating the sounds of classic house with a sleek contemporary touch. Born in London in 1989, Corry was just a boy when the slinky sounds of UK garage catapulted underground dance music into British pop around the turn of the millennium, but he brings the same crossover spirit to his own productions. While 2015’s “Back Again” and “Light It Up” flirted with big-room EDM, Corry looked to the past for his breakout hit, a 2019 cover of Monsta Boy’s 2000 UK garage classic “Sorry” that paired soulful vocals with crisp, jittery drum programming. He’s pursued a similar approach on subsequent singles like “Lonely” and “Head & Heart”, updating the piano chords and organ stabs of ’90s dance pop with 21st-century production values. While Corry’s timeless hooks are perfect for radio, he’s careful to always have something special for the dance floor. As he told Apple Music: “With all my records I like to do my own VIP mix”—that is, a club-ready version that’s a little tougher and heavier. With reality TV in the rearview, these days Corry’s simply keeping it real. - Apple Music

Jax Jones
When Duke Dumont topped the UK charts with his single “I Got U” in 2014, many listeners may have assumed that featured artist Jax Jones was the singer. In fact, Jones (born Timucin Aluo in 1987) was a co-writer and producer on the song, and its No. 1 position marked his auspicious debut. Raised in London by a Turkish father, a Malaysian mother and a Nigerian stepfather, the Apple Music Up Next alum grew up on a mix of American hip-hop, UK dance and African music, which might help to explain the mix of styles that swirls through his own tracks: His youthful fondness for Prince shows through in funk-infused cuts like 2015’s “Ocean Drive”, while Afro-Caribbean accents bubble up in 2018’s “Ring Ring”, a lilting tropical-house collaboration with Mabel and Rich the Kid. Though his beats generally follow the punchy cadence of deep-diving future house, he brings a hip-hop producer’s collage sensibility to the mixing desk: Many of his productions slyly interpolate other songs. “You Don’t Know Me”, from 2016, is built around the slinky hook of M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade’s 2005 anthem “Body Language”, while “I Got U” contains a choice bit of Whitney Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love”. Whether on his own productions or his remixes for Ellie Goulding, Charli XCX and Missy Elliott, Jones’ habitual blend of pop polish and house groove is unmistakable. “I just thought I'd try it,” he told Apple Music about his relationship to dance music. “House is a collage of everything the creator is. If you love hip-hop, you can chuck that in there. If you love rock, you can chuck that in there too. It took a long time, but now it makes a lot of sense. It’s sample-based and also musical, so it's a very natural fit. Life is beautiful like that. They say you have to, like, get rid of yourself to go to the next level. And I think that’s what happened.” - Apple Music
