BuzzJack Music Forum _ Rihanna _ Album Nine

Posted by: Andr00w Jul 19 2016, 08:49 PM

It seems like Rihanna has already started R9 from this tweet (Alicia Renee wrote for ANTI) ohmy.gif

It'll be really hard for her to top ANTI imo but Queen Rih never fails to surprise me *.*

What do you want for R9? Be sure to comment your thoughts below biggrin.gif

EDIT: Josepvinaixa.com has confirmed a new song called 'Mayday' has been registered!

Posted by: phil2 Jul 20 2016, 10:33 PM

defently back towards a smash eg we found love, the loud era was prob my favourite so kind of those lines, smash it back to dancefloor hits!

Posted by: Cremey Jul 20 2016, 10:37 PM

I can't see her topping ANTI but then I didn't think she'd ever top Rated R and she did, so who knows?
I think she probably will be more hit-focused with this release, but I'm not completely sure. Would love an album of BBHMMs but I can't see that happening 😫

I agree tbh. I'd be very disappointed if she did a Loud type album after the experimentation of ANTI (though I doubt she'll do this) but I can see her doing a slightly more 'pop' album.

Another new song, 'Shotgun' feat. J Cole has been registered!

Just found this article from just before Wild Thoughts was released, it looks like Album nine may be on it's way to deliver us Jesus later this year *.*

QUOTE(Revolt)
It’s been over a year since Rihanna released ANTi, the double-platinum, No.1-reaching album that spawned the juggernaut “Work” and defied what many, including us, expected of her. And despite some major Grammy snubs (courtesy of the ever-formidable Adele and inescapable Lemonade aftermath), RiRi showed no signs of defeat, maintaining unwavering presence by strongholding our airwaves and eardrums with more album singles (including “Kiss It Better,” “Needed Me,” and “Love on the Brain”) and distinctive guest appearances everywhere (see: Drake’s “Too Good,” Calvin Harris’ “This Is What You Came For,” Future’s “Selfish,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Loyalty,” Mike WiLL Made-It’s “Nothing Is Promised,” and a yet-to-be-revealed collabo with DJ Khaled).

The singer has yet to provide any details into the release of new music. But, to be fair, she’s been busy being honored by both Harvard University and the Parsons School of Design; stunning (as she is prone to do) at both Coachella and the Met Gala; flexing her acting chops on A&E series Bates Motel and possibly an upcoming Twitter-conceived film; and expanding her design empire into jewelry and more Fenty x PUMA merch.

But if she wasn’t going to speak up, Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw has done so for her. According to Idolator, during a backstage interview at the BBC station’s Big Weekend music festival, he told The Daily Star, “I heard she’s got new music soon.” Adding about possible release dates, he reportedly said, “Well, I don’t know. It’s the end of the year.”

Despite the vague details, Grimshaw may not be too far off. Rihanna has been registering songs with both ASCAP and BPI (the British Phonographic Industry) since last month which could give us a major clue as to what we can expect on #R9. Here are the tracks we know of, so far.

"JOYRIDE"

Travis Scott, co-writer: Despite being blamed by songwriter-producer Glass John (“Kiss It Better”) as the reason ANTi was delayed, La Flare (real name Jacques Webster) and RiRi went on to collaborate on “Woo,” tour together, and reportedly date. And now it seems they’ve reunited.

Hit-Boy, co-writer: The super-producer, real name Chauncey Hollis, served as the brain behind the boards on Jay Z and Kanye West’s “Niggas in Paris,” Beyonce’s “Flawless” and “XO,” and G.O.O.D. Music’s “Cold” and “Clique,” among many (like many) others. He’s also previously worked with Rihanna on ANTi’s “Pose” and “Woo,” and Talk That Talk’s “Watch N Learn.”

Allen Ritter, co-writer: The songwriter and producer has contributed to more tracks than we have space to list but, for now, consider: Kanye West’s “All Day,” Drake’s “Controlla,” Big Sean’s “Blessings,” and Travis Scott’s “Pick Up The Phone.” He also co-wrote RiRi’s “Work.”

"BODY LANGUAGE"

Key Wane, co-writer: Born Dwane Weir II, the producer-songwrier has contributed to Big Sean’s “Beware” and “IDFWU,” Beyonce’s “Partition,” Drake’s “All Me” and Meek Mill’s “Amen.”

Tink, co-writer: The Timbaland-approved singer, real name Trinity Home, has seven mixtapes under her belt (one of which spawned her charting, Aaliyah-sampling single “Million”) and a debut album on the way.

Derrus Rachel, co-writer: Having already formed a relationship with RiRi after nabbing writing credits on ANTi’s “Desperado,” “Woo,” “Needed Me,” Rachel has also contributed to DJ Mustard’s “10,000 Hours” featuring Ella Mai.

“LOCK AND KEY”

Supa Dubs, co-writer: The Kingston, Jamaica-born producer, real name Dwayne Chin-Quee, boasts credits on Drake’s “Controlla” and “Too Good,” PartyNextDoor’s “Not Nice,” and Nina Sky’s “Turning Me On.”

Kranium, co-writer: Hailing from Montego Bay, Jamaica, the reggae and dancehall singer, real name Kemar Donaldson, had his own Billboard charting hit in 2015 with "Nobody Has To Know" which peaked at no. 32 on the Reggae Digital Songs list.

Derrus Rachel, co-writer: See above.

“PHATTY”

Buju Banton, co-writer: The icon and veteran dancehall-reggae musician, born Mark Anthony Myrie, has been sampled by everyone from Cypress Hill to Selena Gomez and, for Rihanna, working with him could be a dream come true considering she named his 'Til Shiloh album one of her top 3 to listen to on repeat.

“ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS”

Ryan Gladieux, co-writer: The multi-talent recorded JoJo’s “f*** Apologies,” engineered Pitbull and Kesha’s “Timber,” and produced Flo Rida’s “I Don’t Like It, I Love It” featuring Robin Thicke.

Paul Salva, co-writer: The DJ made waves back in 2012 when his remix of Kanye West’s “Mercy” was put in radio rotation and has since been behind the official reworks of tracks from Chromeo, Nelly Furtado and, prophetically, Rihanna’s own “Needed Me” and “Sex With Me.”

All of these have some great names on them, Joyride sounds most promising from the names on it! Can't wait for her to release a new album, ik this isn't nearly as long as the wait between Unapologetic and ANTI but I'm always impatient when it comes to the Queen ;o

Pinned this so it doesn't get lost like the other thread!

I can't remember the article but she also worked with Skrillex and Blackbear on music recently.

Not sure on Blackbear but Skrillex is usually great *.*

Posted by: Cremey Aug 19 2017, 09:23 AM

I can't WAIT for new music. Love all the excitement at the beginning of a new era.
I'm hoping the beginning of R9 will go a lot more smoothly than R8. Even through it was all worth it in the end for the masterpiece that is ANTI, I hated not knowing what was going on at the start, the random single releases that weren't even on the album... I'll never be happy that BBHMM didn't make the cut, haha 😭

Loving the sound of PHATTY from that *.*
Also, hoping that Joyride won't actually be on there because that's a Tinashe track she was oroginally naming her second album after...her version leaked a while back as well and it was nothing special really either :')

Omg Skrillex and Rihanna YES

Posted by: *Tim Aug 19 2017, 01:21 PM

I need a bit more pop than Anti but I'm so readh

Posted by: Atonement Aug 19 2017, 02:09 PM

I know a lot of other artists are releasing this fall as well but I don't want to wait until 2018 so I hope something is coming soon.

Posted by: Liаm Aug 19 2017, 02:25 PM

Q4 would be fab, we've had Wild Thoughts and Loyalty to sort of tide us over but she hasn't been like Justin Bieber level of omnipresence with her features so Q4 would be perfect to properly come back! I'd love something more poppy too, a mixture of songs like Work and Wild Thoughts with some more pop leaning stuff would be great, all we got on Anti really was Love On The Brain but I'll definitely have another song like that wub.gif

I agree, although the only thing I'd be worried about is Q4 sales. Yeah ANTI had a botched release but I fear that the long gap between Unapologetic and ANTI really harmed her ability to sell MASSIVE numbers like she used to and to stay high in the chart you kind of need those unlike at this time of year where like 3k will get you a top 40 laugh.gif

Posted by: Cremey Aug 20 2017, 12:46 AM

I'd love a Q4 release so much. I think she could definitely pull it off with the right singles and promotion.
ANTI was a bit of an odd one because of the free copies and the odd build up, hopefully R9 will be a much more standard release. With good promo/a huge single I'm confident she could get HUGE Q4 sales.

So excited for the first single 😍

Posted by: AdamAloud Aug 20 2017, 11:12 AM

I'm so ready for new Rihanna, can't believe it's already been 18 months since ANTI!

Posted by: Cremey Aug 20 2017, 11:20 AM

That's actually crazy! I was about to be like 'uhhh it's only been a year!' but it really has been 18 months ohmy.gif
Really doesn't feel that long ago at all.

QUOTE(MTV)
Rihanna and Diplo made headlines just a few weeks ago after the producer revealed the Bajan superstar rejected his music... twice, but things might be turning around for him.
In a new interview with iHeartRadio, Diplo cleared up the controversy - it's all love! - and let slip some MAJOR news about Rihanna's current day-to-day
Diplo's actual words were, "We talked a little bit because she's writing a lot of new music right now for her next project and, hopefully, we can connect."
That's nice and all, Dip, but we're a bit busy screaming over the news that Rihanna is currently WRITING FOR HER NEW ALBUM.

The Major Lazer producer knows better than to give away exact details of a pop queen's music, although he did hint about the reggae direction of the album.
"I know that we both have the same affinity for dancehall and reggae and things like that. I know she knows she's a fan of our [Major Lazer's] music."

And will their beats be good enough this time? "You always gotta to be on your toes and work harder and she made me feel that way and I love her to death."
Sounds like this might be the perfect time...

They really do need to work together ASAP.

Posted by: Atonement Sep 13 2017, 06:18 PM

I'm SO thirsty for new music. I hate myself for starting to stan her in like 2014. I missed all the good years and only got the crap half-assed moments.

If only she cared as much about ha music as she does about FentyBeauty.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 19 2017, 06:26 PM

I love Rihanna but I hope R9 doesn't come out until next year.
If she releases this year i feel as though she'll get lost amongst the mix and it would prevent her getting another UK number one album .
In Q4 we have Pink returning, Taylor is releasing in November which is bound to be the biggest female album of Q4 and then Sam Smith is coming back too which is also bound to be a huge #1. I also hope we get more SOLO smashes and the collaborations are released sparingly.

I think as a popstar, it's in her contract to have at least one of Gucci Mane, Young Thug or French Montana on the album.

Personally I think she'd work quite well with Frank Ocean's voice and I would love another female collab from her but I can't think who she would get - apart from SZA on "Consideration", who was pretty much a nobody when Anti came out (correct me if I'm wrong x), she's only had one female feature on one of her tracks - Loud's "Raining Men" which was terrible and released seven years ago!

Literally cannot wait for this, really really hoping we get something before the end of the year but as we get closer to November/December it's feeling less and less likely sad.gif Although Beyoncé's self-titled dropped in mid-December and Rih is at a similar place in her career to Bey at that time so it could happen.

In all fairness she was popping out albums annually for 8 years - if she continued at that frequency her star could have easily burned out, especially considering the decline in quality from Loud/TTT to Unapologetic. She needs a killer comeback track to rival Umbrella, OG, WFL.

That's just subjective. For me 'Unapologetic' is one of her best albums. And 'Diamonds' and 'Stay' are two of her biggest hits and can easily rival with any of the other tracks you mentioned.

I'm not expecting yearly albums anymore but we're not even getting them every other year. Considering how fickle the music industry is it's important to stay relevant. Those long waits between album will kill the momentum. Rihanna is lucky she has the cool factor going for her but she really needs to step up the game (although I doubt she still really cares much about getting the hits).

ANTI performed really well as well so I'm not sure she'd be as unhappy as the article says. The main focus will be the US and there she had three huge smashes and a couple of songs doing very well in the club/dance charts and ANTI is multiplatinum.

A REGGAE ALBUM *.*

MORE SONGS LIKE NO LOVE ALLOWED *.*

SHE IS COMING *.*

Posted by: Theo. May 3 2018, 01:56 PM

I'm not 100% sold on the idea of a full-on reggae album but she has delivered some bops that have edged on reggae in the past, so I'll reserve judgement for now.

Here's the extract from the interview regarding music:

QUOTE
And yet Rihanna’s most impressive body of work begins and ends with her music. While it’s been more than two years since she released Anti, she continues to dominate the pop charts, and she set yet another benchmark this March as the first female artist ever to surpass two billion streams on Apple Music. With her next record—her ninth—Rihanna is moving the needle on her creative output all over again: She plans to make a reggae album. Though it’s too soon to name a full list of collaborators, one early influence may be Supa Dups, the Jamaican-born record producer who has worked with such dancehall greats as Beenie Man, Sean Paul, and Elephant Man. If Rihanna had to name her favorite reggae artist of all time, though, it would have to be Bob Marley. (Descriptions of the Bob shrine she once built in her home are all over the internet.) “I’m gonna sound like a real tourist when I tell you my top Bob songs,” she says, pausing to scroll through a playlist on her iPhone before rattling off many of his most beloved hits: “Three Little Birds,” “No Woman, No Cry,” and “Redemption Song,” a Marley classic she has covered on tour. It may surprise you to learn that of all the tunes in the reggae icon’s catalog, “Buffalo Soldier” is the one that resonates with Rihanna on a deeply personal level. The song’s theme of upheaval and displacement is a familiar refrain for the singer, who was whisked away from Barbados to New York within months of being discovered by record producer Evan Rogers at the tender age of sixteen. Her risk-taking instincts and taste for danger have often earned her comparisons to Madonna, though in fact the similarities between Bob Marley and Rihanna ring truer, even beyond the obvious island connection. Like Marley, Rihanna is possessed of an unstudied yet wholly electrifying sense of cool. Her ability to continually recalibrate the mood of a generation in the way she sounds, looks, and moves through the world has unwittingly positioned her, just as it did him, at the global axis of popular culture.

Posted by: danG May 3 2018, 03:26 PM

oh please not an entire reggae album. huh.gif

Posted by: Lucas May 3 2018, 05:11 PM

When has Rih ever made an album that's just one genre ? laugh.gif
Reggae will just be the dominant genre on R9, the same way R&B was the main genre on Anti

Posted by: Liаm May 3 2018, 05:23 PM

Man Down is her best song and that's the tea so I'm kinda here for this, as said I doubt it would be the entire album it might just be an overarching theme.

Besides Work was dancehall so a few songs in that vein as well as some full on reggae.

Man Down is her best song and that's the tea so I'm kinda here for this, as said I doubt it would be the entire album it might just be an overarching theme.

Besides Work was dancehall so a few songs in that vein as well as some full on reggae.

THIS x100

I love it when she incorporates her Caribbean roots into her music. heart.gif

I doubt it. Tbh, when I first heard the two albums rumour I was so excited but now, as weird as it feels to say I DON'T want more Rih music to have a reggae/experimental album and a commercial one would feel like a get out of jail free card if the reggae underperformed if that makes any sense :') ANTI did fine anyway, maybe slightly disappointing in Europe but in the UK it's had a great chart run.

Posted by: Atonement May 26 2018, 10:26 AM

I really don't think the two album rumor is true. But if it is she should release one this year and the other one next year. Not at the same time please.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jul 12 2018, 04:42 PM

I wonder if the double album rumors were true and if the album will be double disc like Drakes Scorpion. I can’t see it myself but she’s someone who could definitely pull it off. I see the album as more reggae than rock but would personally prefer a more rock style album as that’s something she hasn’t really done since Rated R (her best album).

Posted by: Theo. Jul 19 2018, 05:45 PM

500!! I don't believe that, why would they only select 10 for the final album if that were true?! I need a new music now!!!

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jul 19 2018, 06:55 PM

If anyone remembers this what was ANTI described as before that came out was it accurate to the final product? Often we hear things about albums what turn out to be total false yet this seems accurate too me as I imagined Rihanna to do this sound but not necessarily an entire albums worth.

Posted by: danG Jul 20 2018, 08:45 AM

Doesn't that just mean 500 songs have been written and given to Rihanna/her team to consider recording for the album, rather than her actually recording 500 songs? I can believe that, she is so big that the label can afford to commission so many songs and choose only the best (watch there be some filler tracks anyway).

Posted by: Cremey Jul 20 2018, 09:46 AM

Yeah I read it as being 500 songs submitted to her team, which wouldn’t surprise me at all.
There’s no way she’s recorded that many of them but in terms of songs submitted I can totally believe that.

I’m so here for a dancehall album.

Alesso revealed in an interview that Rihanna wants to make this a "dance-heavy album" and that she is planning to work with Calvin, Guetta, Diplo and Garrix for it. Diplo responded on Twitter by saying "the first rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club".

Honestly I don't know what to believe/expect at the moment. Obviously I'd kill for another Calvin banger, especially with what he's been giving us this year but I still don't love their last collaboration as much as I should do. I don't think she's ever worked with Diplo before though (correct me if I'm wrong) so his tweet alluding to a collab is exciting but none of these artists point towards a reggae/dancehall album so...

Guetta can stay away though!

Posted by: Cremey Oct 2 2018, 12:18 PM

Diplo’s been wanting to work with her for years but she’s always turned him down laugh.gif maybe she’s finally given in? His sound is way more centred in reggae/dancehall than dance (except his most recent stuff) so that could work both ways.

I’d give anything for a full dancehall album 😭

Tbh, as lovely as a surprise like that would be (and no complaints if it came out of nowhere today tbh ;o) the whole Beyonce thing has become so commonplace it's boring. It's come to the point where if we got a pre-order and lots of promo it would be refreshing af laugh.gif Beyonce's surprise album with Jay Z has hardly done amazing so it doesn't have the same effect commercially either.

I think it’s coming next year tbh. ANTis release has probably made her think twice about the dropping out of nowhere style release.

Why would she be thinking twice? 'ANTI' spent 31 consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the US chart, spending 2 weeks at #1 (her only other US #1, 'Unapologetic', only spent 1 week there) and has been certified 3x Platinum. It's still charting in its 140th week on sale, more than 40 weeks longer than 'Good Girl Gone Bad', her second longest charting album.

Just because it 'underperformed' in the UK doesn't mean it was a clip or she's going to change her release strategies. I think she will announce this album but there won't be a 2 month long build up to its release like most pop acts. Single then album a couple of weeks later would be perfect.

Posted by: The Feline Lorde Oct 2 2018, 09:39 PM

yeah it's easier to forget how big ANTI was in the US because it underperformed over here!

She had three huge top 10 hits from the ANTI era over there too - more than Unapologetic and Talk That Talk!

Posted by: Andrew. Oct 2 2018, 11:48 PM

ANTI has done really well in the US, way better than I thought it would after the messy af roll out of it but in Europe it didn't do great, I think the 'surprise' release would've worked over here if FFS/BBHMM/AO didn't exist or there wasn't a huge gap but it felt like by the time ANTI came out there was no hype apart from the fans, even with Work smashing. Even though ANTI has excellent streaming on it's side when her other albums haven't had that, it still hasn't got platinum and I THINK (correct me please laugh.gif) it'll take a while to get there as well. Obviously platinum isn't the be all and end all but it looks good to have kink.gif I wonder if it's sold 100k pure sales, not that it matters a lot.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Oct 3 2018, 11:50 AM

I was always under the impression that the US success was more because of streams if it was just based on just pure sales and downloads that ANTi would’ve been labelled an underperformance in the US too.

I think there’ll be a big campaign for this album in the opening weeks though. ANTi had some like she did do the Brits didn’t she put the Grammys got cancelled which could’ve been a big moment had that went ahead.

That's not really a valid point either though because streaming is how most artists have successful albums nowadays. Even the Greatest Showman soundtrack has relied on streaming for almost 50% of its total sales.

Drake I’d be happy with. I know she’s worked with him in the past but every duet they’ve had is different.

The others I hope not blink.gif

I can see multiple rap and urban artists being on the album though, I even thought Sean Paul May be on there due to the Dancehall theme the album has.

That’s a possibility. I was gonna say it’s not a Friday but then again Beyoncé released her last two albums on non chart days wasn’t Beyoncé released on a Friday when the chart was still a Sunday, then Lemonade was released on a Sunday or something? I remember prince being midweek #1 as he had just died then Lemonade overtook.

Every day now I check iTunes, then Apple Music, then twitter as I don’t have Spotify to see if the albums dropped overnight.

At this point, I don’t feel Rihanna cares that much about chart positions or sales for this album I think the tour will be a bigger focus for her. I think she’ll at least get a top 5 track from this album and I can see the album easily going to #1.

The source for this info isn't this Twitter account, it's US Weekly:

"For months, Rihanna’s dedicated legion of fans, collectively known as the Rihanna Navy, have been flooding her Instagram notifications with “Where’s the album?” comments. It’s closer than they think.
Multiple sources confirm to Us Weekly exclusively that the Grammy winner, 30, recently finished recording her ninth album.
It is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2016’s Anti, which spawned the hit singles “Work” featuring Drake, “Kiss It Better,” “Needed Me” and “Love on the Brain.
”"

Article published last night.

She said "It ain't done until it's done", which reminds me of what she told NME about Anti in 2015: "To me it’s never done until it’s done. Until the final moment.
Because Rihanna's definition of an album being "done" is that it's out, basically. She released Anti just 3 days after it was completed.

I'm pretty sure she has finished recording it, like the article says, but that it doesn't have a tracklist yet and needs finishing touches (mixing, etc.).

Posted by: Jordan Lee Mar 1 2019, 01:21 AM

37 days to go until this matches the gap between Unapologetic and ANTI.

Will she break the gap and have R9 become the longest ever wait for a Rihanna studio album?

2019 really is the year of female pop megastars.

Adele can stay in hiding.

C'mon Rihanna. We waiting.

From her recent interview we got some small bits of info.

It’s a reggae album.

Lady Gaga isn’t on it as of yet she said she hasn’t recorded with her but isn’t opposed too.

The album doesn’t have a title yet either and she’s feeling R9 as a title.

Nothing on the release date.

Not sure how I feel about a full reggae album but I'll reserve judgement until we've heard the lead. I'm definitely not into R9 as a title though - if Little Mix have allowed that trend to move into the mainstream, I will not be happy! I'd rather it be called Robyn, Rihanna or Fenty if she's going for a self-titled approach

Posted by: Mack. May 21 2019, 01:53 PM

When do you think that she most likely to release new material in the summer months, or October/November time?

Posted by: Atonement May 21 2019, 05:06 PM

She should just release a few standalone singles if the album isn't ready yet. If it's a reggae album a Summer release would be ideal but is looking unlikely at this point.

Posted by: Mack. May 22 2019, 01:25 PM

Yes, she could release new material in August time and then release the album in October/November time.

I agree with this!

Love Robyn as a title or any of those.

A full reggae album I’ll have to hear. I love tracks like Man Down and No Love Allowed but not sure I’d stan like an entire album
of tracks like that. Although I’d definitely rather a Reggae album than an album full of Urban like tracks.

Posted by: Atonement Jul 9 2019, 03:43 PM

This will be her last album for a long time (if not ever) I feel.

The daydrinking sketch with Seth Meyers, where her FIRST question for advice to him was 'if I quit music, what should I do?', really spoke volumes. She doesn't like making music anymore.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jul 9 2019, 11:00 PM

I’d be devastated if she fully quit.

I’ve seen a lot of people who have the opinion you have though @Atonement

I mean artists like Lady Gaga for instance do other stuff on the side but you can music is her passion above anything else. With Rihanna at the moment it seems like she’s venturing into like a Victoria Beckham possibly? Establishing herself as a power brand and business woman.

I feel like albums from her are gonna be more rare now though like 4 years will probably be the new norm now. But I don’t think she’s gonna quit full stop. But if she did she does have a huge legacy.

I’m hopeful she may get back her passion though. Maybe at the moment she’s feeling a lack of creativity musically and that’s why it feels the albums taking forever. She seems as though she wants to make music now what has meaning to her rather than doing what she done during her peak when her albums were rush recorded and just recorded whatever was handed to her. She seems more involved in the writing process now.

I’m also wondering if her tour this time around will be smaller. Maybe like what Madonna’s doing with her Madame X shows?

I think this will be her final album before she becomes a mother but maybe that will spark her creative spirit and give us her ROL album.

I don’t feel she’ll ever quit full stop. But her releases now will be as often as like a Adele album is.

Adele releasing seems possible

The big pop girls all seem to be releasing this year.

With Taylor releasing in August I think it’ll be at least October before a new Rihanna album.

Singles wise though if the albums fully reggae the perfect time for a summer smash is now!

I do feel we’re gonna get everything at the same time though.

From the Spotify comments (she’s followed them on insta) and how much she keeps specifying there’s lots of 2019 left I’m anticipating an early Autumn start for the ERA. After that...I’m not sure as the way she speaks about music sounds like she kinda cba lol but I’m going to just try and enjoy this era for now.

I’d happily wait longer if meant we got promotion in terms of the album and more than anything like drive and enthusiasm in terms of her music career.

I worry that could be lacking at the moment and i wouldn’t want an album and nothing else. Like I want big promo, killer videos and a real like RETURN.

ANTI as someone from the UK i don’t feel we had that but in the USA the album slayed.

I want the drive Rihanna had for her music from 2007-2012.

Maybe I’m being pessimistic, but I just can’t see it. I don’t think she cares about music as much anymore to do that, I just get that feeling sad.gif I could be wrong, maybe she’s trolling us (what’s nu Rih) and she’ll be the omnipresence in music she was. Although I guess she’s got more to think about now with Fenty Beauty being so big and profitable for her! Bitch better have my make up

The promo campaign for ANTI outside the US was...well you can’t even call it that really :’) I’m not sure about elsewhere but the only promo in the UK was the Brit Awards. I’d imagine a lot of ANTI’s poor start was the casual album buyers not even knowing she had an album out.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Aug 3 2019, 04:55 PM

I seen this on Twitter I don’t know where the source come from I screengrabbed it last night but this is what was said.

“Rihanna keeps adding songs when she should really start to think what songs to put on her album since it is going to be a ten to twelve song album. There were thoughts to do a double album but what has won out is to do a single album of her favourite tracks she has recorded. She has picks that are going to be on it, but there are still some thoughts on adding certain tracks because she has a lot of good music recorded. So, the current problem and good problem to have in her eyes is that she has many good ideas and is still recording. She is just looking for all the gems”.

“As of last month Rihanna was still requesting songs from producers and writers, she has so many great songs, but until she’s a thousand percent satisfied she isn’t putting out the album, and only Rihanna knows when that will be. She is well aware that her fans want the album and she, of course has been getting tons of pressure from the label to put it out, but she’s not the type of person to compromise her vision to give in to demands. She’s still promising to get it out this year, but no one is going to be that shocked if she pushes the release yet again, she does what she wants and no one can tell her other wise”

I remember The Sun saying her career had gone up in smoke when ANTI only debuted at #7.

It just seemed to come from nowhere and then other than the BRITS we didn’t see much of her. Even the tour was partly cancelled I had tickets for Sunderland and could no longer go.

It held up well over time and streaming was kind to the album. But compared to like every other era before hand it didn’t have much promo in the UK but maybe the focus was just on the US?

In the US the album was huge but that was just streaming being kind and selling well over time wasn’t it. Like it never had a huge sales week did it? I seem to remember even the US had promo issues though didn’t she cancel or pull out the Grammys last minute.

She won't promote it and she won't care about the success. She's now an elusive entrepreneuse and we will deal with that.

This.

She's at that point in her career where sales and success doesn't matter — she's making serious money elsewhere. It's probably more important for her that it's a critical success.

I do think people are ready for new Rihanna though and struggle to see her flopping.

Posted by: Theonix Aug 5 2019, 07:16 AM

I just heard Greg James on Radio 1 say that there are rumours a huge popstar is releasing a single on Thursday with Rih and Adele 2 possibilities - the first I've heard of these rumours but he sounded very hyped for new music from Rihanna and even played Only Girl (In the World) in anticipation so there's clearly still widespread appeal

Posted by: Jordan Lee Aug 5 2019, 12:47 PM

So.. there’s news of this being a big US TV takeover with a lot of big shows expecting a special guest who’s unnnamed at present.

The shows are late night shows right? So it’s possible that there’s an announcement coming (the interviews already having been recorded or are being recorded over the next few days) before the music possibly drops at midnight on Friday.

This is pretty exciting.

Rihanna seems likely. I don’t think it’s Adele as I feel like she’d announce it on UK TV first.

Gaga could also be an outside bet as well. I wouldn’t be that surprised if it was her but with her Beauty brand just launching i just don’t know.

I guess we will know soon. By this article the main name confusing me is Selena Gomez. I just don’t feel she’s huge enough to warrant that big a takeover.

I’m guessing whoever it is probably has some form of press injunction in place until Thursday night.

Posted by: HausofTove Aug 5 2019, 01:54 PM

If it's not Gaga, I'd love it to be Rih!

Posted by: Jordan Lee Aug 6 2019, 12:47 AM

Rihanna seems likely tbh.

But I think because I’m desperate for new music from her I’m finding ways to make all clues fit to it being her.

But I will say this

Summer is good timing for reggae music which is what Rihanna’s album is.

August 23rd will see Taylor releasing so if it’s an album drop releasing two weeks before means hopefully easy #1 (Taylor’s huge isn’t
she for first week US sales so makes sense she may wanna release earlier).
If Adele is also releasing she may wanna release before Adele who’s likely to be Q4. ANTI was pushed back bc of Adele wasn’t it.

The TV takeover Rihanna would definitely be big enough to do to command audiences on all major shows. Hype would be huge but she needs some big promo and this would certainly be it!!

Even if it’s just a single drop what a way to comeback for her if it is her.

I’ve always strongly felt though that when the albums done she’s not gonna hang around and she’s just gonna drop the entire album. Probably get the physical CD a few weeks later but up for streaming and iTunes download right away.

It seems so. This was reported by multiple French journalists who attended to the Open Session held by Universal Music France today.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 6 2019, 09:31 PM

If Adele’s really releasing in November this won’t be going to #1 or at least not debuting there.

Coldplay couldn’t hold her off #1 here when 25 come out so I don’t feel Rihanna would although it could do a Loud and go to #1 the following year.

Posted by: Bjork Sep 10 2019, 03:36 PM

does Rihanna care about chart positions? she did all the Tidal mess last time...

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 10 2019, 09:50 PM

She pushed ANTI back though didn’t she so it didn’t clash with 25?

Although that was a big US #1 album which kinda overshadows it’s more modest performance in the UK (#7 peak).

I don’t think it’ll be as messy this time around. Her streaming sales should be higher too I wouldn’t be shocked this time if her streaming sales alone were more than what ANTI did first week in the UK.

December release however would mean better sales regardless of where it peaks.

Is this double disc or like two totally seperate albums like sweetener and thank u, next where they’ll chart separately

If that rumour is true I think I’ll probably prefer the evolution one but it’s hard to predict. I’ve always liked reggae like Rihanna but I don’t know how I’d feel of like a full album of tracks like Man Down, No Love Allowed.

There’s only one Friday left in 2019 Rihanna promised us way back at start of year this was coming in 2019.

She’s also teased she’s listening to the album? I feel it’s coming soon (but tbh I’ve said this so many y times in this thread laugh.gif ). A surprise release on fri 27th? That way escaping the Xmas market and avoiding getting lost in it with the physical release coming the second Friday in January? Guess we will see.

The only real thing I’ve always thought would happen this era is that we would get a surprise drop and not a campaign with a lead single (or multiple singles / promo singles) and then album release weeks later. She’s gonna drop the whole thing then let us decide what the singles will be.

from her Vogue interview

QUOTE
Here of all places, at her record company’s offices, it’s hard to ignore the small matter of her next music project – nicknamed R9, because it will be her ninth album – the absence and delay of which has been tirelessly debated by her army of stans, The Navy. “I can’t say when I’m going to drop,” she says (it could even be out by the time you read this). “But I am very aggressively working on music,” she adds, coyly.

What can we expect? “I don’t want my albums to feel like themes,” she says, taking a sip of wine. “There are no rules. There’s no format. There’s just good music, and if I feel it, I’m putting it out.” Does that mean that, contrary to reports, it’s not going to be a reggae album, I ask, trying to hide my disappointment. Rihanna chuckles. “Oh no, that is happening,” she reassures me. But on this, as in life, she won’t be pinned down. “I feel like I have no boundaries. I’ve done everything – I’ve done all the hits, I’ve tried every genre – now I’m just, I’m wide open. I can make anything that I want.”

Posted by: Mack. Apr 1 2020, 11:45 AM

Probably then in October, we'll hear something from R9 hopefully.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Apr 1 2020, 05:07 PM

She’s right in that she’s done everything! That’s partly why she’s had so much success because of her versatility. I’m excited for whatever sound she goes for on R9.

I’m guessing Q4 is a likely estimated time for this to come. We’re just gonna wake up one day and it’ll be out no build up, no lead single release weeks before, no countdown just a surprise release and that day will feel so magical. wub.gif

I'm totally expecting her to just drop it with no prior single/pre-order so ironically it would be more of a surprise if we actually got a 'traditional' album campaign lol. I don't really mind what she comes up with as long as it's good. Urban, pop, reggae, the time she's been working on this I trust another masterpiece is coming.

I'm not sure I can cope after last year though, on New Year's actual Eve I constantly refreshed my Spotify from midnight to 5am looking for a new album to find NOTHING sob.gif

The corona virus might have delayed the project slightly but I definitely think we are getting an album.

I definitely think by now she’d have said if there wasn’t one! It’s just looking likely that it might potentially be a 2021 release who knows.

I guess they didn’t have much stories to report on so they invented one laugh.gif

She talked about the album during her Fenty Skin interviews, said it'll be out "sooner than my fans think":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArMV1gOnhMQ

Whatever that means but there's probably hope for a 2020 release after all. She also said it's taken this long so she'll make it worth it:

I’ve been off my phone for like 8 hours so when I seen this had a comment of just a few minutes ago I thought she’d done a Taylor laugh.gif

I think it’s kinda possible we might get a usual Q4 type release for this but I honestly don’t know. It’s nice she’s mentioned the album at least but sooner than my fans think could mean anything like when do we as fans think this is coming. I was thinking at some point next year because of COVID so that’s made me think it’s coming at some point this year. Who knows.

I definitely think this is a surprise drop though

The gap between albums has nearly been 5 years now. drama.gif That's like the duration between Music Of The Sun and Loud. drama.gif The wait is too long I'm close to rihtiring.

I’m not losing hope this is coming soon, P!nk took five years between The Truth About Love and Beautiful Trauma (ik she had a side project in between those). She released an album just two years after BT so hopefully getting back on the promo trail will give Rih ‘the bug’ in terms of making music again and it won’t be light years until R10, that’s what I’m clinging to at least 😅

When we get the album I’m sure it’ll be a ‘surprise’ drop but it’d be more surprising to me if she put up a pre-order with bundles and vinyls *.* PLEASE reward us with the physicals after ANTI’s release was so botched!

That was my thought after she released 'Anti'. ''Surely she won't make us wait 3+ years again''. The truth is, music isn't her priority anymore. I'm not really up to date on P!nk, but Rihanna has so many side businesses now I don't think she'll ever want to go back to music full time. And that's okay. She's made her mark in the music industry. Up until very recently she was still the #1 most played female on Spotify even though she only released one album in the Spotify era.

Do I wish she was still as excited and passionate about making and releasing music? Yes, but it is what it is.

Posted by: jlj Sep 27 2020, 05:41 PM

Rihanna’s main passion with the music she makes is now she’s making the kind of music she wants to create. I guess when she was huge and releasing an album each year her say on what want on those albums might not have been like the final one and she’s definitely way more involved in the writing process on her albums now than she was back then (perhaps Rated R is the other exception to that).

I’m torn on what I want. A surprise drop would work Rih and I do think her first week sales will be bigger than ANTIs but I’d also love bundles etc to just maximise on that first week. I’m so ready though for new music. I’d love it to come in November but my feeling is perhaps another January release for this. I would love a real campaign for the era too but yeah I didn’t really see that. Maybe a few performances here and there and a tour but with this album being a real comeback album for her I really hope she releases it when it’s safe to fully go in and promote.

I know R9 is going to be a game changer when it is released. It seems like she is very happy with the music she has done for the album. It is just finding the right timing for the release. I think 2021 will be the year we will finally get this album. The preview she played of Real High at SavageXFenty showed she is coming with something FRESH!

A track called 'Real High' has been registered with BMI.

i'm guessing its changed from being a 2 cd - one reggae, one standard Rihanna R&B/Pop? Wonder if there's something more going on behind the scenes... i know shes been enjoying Fenty Beauty and the easy income?

Posted by: Sour Candy Sep 26 2021, 06:48 PM

We need rock/industrial Rihanna with some ace choreos and some caribbean flavor.

Posted by: -Jay- Sep 27 2021, 06:02 AM

It's great for her that she's incredibly successful with Fenty, but I'm starting to wonder if she'll ever feel motivated to dedicating a few months of her time to an album's promotion/touring, or whether that's even at all practical for her anymore.

The "you can't rush music" line is fair enough in theory (but quite funny from the artist who managed to churn out 7 albums in 7 years kink.gif ). I'm just not sure I totally buy what she says... maybe she's just trying to appease her music fans.

Maybe she'll surprise me and I'll be eating my words before long, but hmm. These days I'm seeing her more as being a celebrity business woman and less as a music artist.

Posted by: Sour Candy Sep 27 2021, 08:21 AM

Maybe she has just found the perfectionist in her after Anti was so well received and a commercial success? It's one of the benchmark albums of recent times, something that she wasn't used to when hurrying them albums once a year.

There are rumours about an upcoming Bad Bunny collaboration, but as always, I believe it when I see it.

Posted by: Jord Feb 13 2022, 09:53 PM

Not necessarily an update but I seen this.

I posted this in another thread but my anticipation for this has grown even more now she’s announced her pregnancy. Pregnancy really can make artists explode creatively (just look at Madonna’s Ray of Light / Music eras). I do wonder if her pregnancy has perhaps made her record more or if the direction of the albums changed. Regardless though whenever we get new music from her it will feel like such an event at this stage heart.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Feb 13 2022, 11:42 PM

I wonder if a whole decade will pass without her having released an album.

Ray of Lightbhas some of my favourite Madonna songs, so I’d be all in if Rihanna produced something similar.

Not a major update but some information regarding R9 cool.gif

I think this likely means no tour at present or the albums been delayed to a time when she can do more promo type stuff? Who knows laugh.gif

Posted by: dannjohn Apr 14 2022, 02:48 PM

you can't rush music laugh.gif

Only 2 of her albums had any real creativity to them (Rated R & Anti)... the rest were album after album cycle, so it's an odd thing for her to say.

Posted by: jordanlee1402 Jan 1 2023, 11:15 PM

Will this be the year we get that album from her?!

At the very least we have a Super Bowl show to look forward too but I really feel like new music (music what is related to an album campaign of hers! ) must be a stronger possibility at this stage of the year than any year since 2016… or am I being too optimistic laugh.gif

(On another note) - First post of 2023 laugh.gif

Posted by: One_For_Sorrow Jan 2 2023, 02:36 AM

The Superbowl is a positive sign. Hopefully she announces something before then.

Posted by: Envoirment Jan 2 2023, 06:05 PM

I'm expecting the album might be late 2023 or even in 2024. With mutliple single releases throughout 2023 - some of which may or may not make the album. Similar to the build up to Anti with the likes of "FourFiveSeconds"/"Bitch Better Have My Money"/"American Oxygen".

Posted by: Voodoo Jan 2 2023, 06:43 PM

At this point she should just "surprise" release it, preferably around the time of the Superbowl performance.

Posted by: Sour Candy Jan 2 2023, 06:55 PM

I'm expecting a single or EP with the SB gig but nothing more.

Posted by: Jessie Where Jan 3 2023, 10:29 AM

I'd probably say a Greatest Hits is most likely.

Posted by: Gerald Jan 3 2023, 02:49 PM

Yeah I am expecting a Greatest Hits album for the Superbowl something similar to The Weeknd's The Highlights.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 3 2023, 06:37 PM

No way, she has too many hits to have a GH
I'm hoping for a new album dropped out of the blue, Ri's folklore biggrin.gif
Rihanna doesn't need a 10 month album campaign with 6 pre-album singles, she's not Ella Henderson biggrin.gif

Posted by: One_For_Sorrow Jan 3 2023, 07:00 PM

I agree she could drop an album out of the blue and doesn’t need many pre album singles. I just feel like she’d need at least one.

If it’s a Greatest Hits hopefully there’s a new few new songs to go with it.

How can you have too many hits for a GH?

It's only like Madonna with The Immaculate Collection and GHV2, you simply choose the signature hits and leave the lesser ones out.

That’s what I thought. You could easily make it 2cds as well.

I’m living in hope (hopefully not delusion) that we will at some point get this album.

The Super Bowl has me feeling like her return to music and a new campaign is coming soon. How big is her power though that 7 years have passed without an album and she’s still pulling the amount of hype, discussion and streams that she is. She really is a megastar dance.gif

Rihanna talks about the prospect of a new album in her British Vogue interview:

QUOTE
With dawn still an hour away, now seems as good a time as any to face the moment all interviewers must face. The moment you ask Rihanna about her plans to release a new album. Anti, her last, came out in 2016, and in the years since she has fluctuated between blind optimism and borderline anger in the face of incessant fan and media questioning. But I’ve never seen her so up for it. “You can ask!” she says when I broach the subject.

She’s been thinking a lot about her process lately. “When you come off of an album like Anti…” she begins cautiously, then visibly decides to just spit it out. “In hindsight, it really is my most brilliant album. I say that because in the moment, I didn’t realise it. But it always felt like the most cohesive album I’ve ever made. When you break it down and you realise this album goes from ‘Work’ to ‘Kiss It Better’ to ‘Needed Me’ to ‘Love on the Brain’ to ‘Sex with Me’ to ‘Desperado’.” She beams. “And somehow it all fits and not for a second did you glitch?”

The variety is exquisite. “Right? It’s like a DJ’s worst nightmare,” she says. “But there’s this pressure that I put on myself. That if it’s not better than that then it is not even worth it.” That’s such a toxic pressure. “It is toxic. You’re right. It’s not the right way to look at music because music is an outlet and a space to create, and you can create whatever. It doesn’t have to even be on any scale. It just has to be something that feels good. It could just be a song that I like. It literally could be that simple.”

She sits up tall. “So I realised that if I keep waiting until this feels right and perfect and better, maybe it’s going to keep taking forever and maybe it’ll never come out and no, I’m not down to that. So I want to play. And by play, I mean I have my ideas in my head, but I can’t say them out loud yet.”

Rihanna never stopped recording. The past years are littered with songs she’s fallen in and out of love with. She says that listening back to an unreleased song is “almost like trying to dress like you used to dress. It’s like, ‘Ew, no. I would never wear those again.’ Your taste changes, your vibe changes.” But all being well, I venture, a new album this year?

“I want it to be this year,” she says, at this stage very much aware she is pregnant again. “Like, honestly, it’d be ridiculous if it’s not this year. But I just want to have fun. I just want to make music and make videos.” She misses the visuals almost more than music. “And I need the right background music with the visuals. I can’t just go shoot a video to me talking,” she says, laughing once again.

Posted by: Voodoo May 2 2023, 10:27 AM

She is (still) not ready to deliver (the album).

Posted by: -Jay- May 2 2023, 01:34 PM

I've resigned myself to it not coming ever, and if I'm being honest the two soundtrack songs from last year dampened my hype for new Rihanna music anyway kink.gif

I miss her so much! I know we fairly recently had the new music tied to the Black Panther soundtrack but new music whats tied to a campaign would be such a dream! All her albums are different from one another and if you look at her lead singles each one is such a big switch from the previous.

I’m still hopeful that one day we will get this album eventually but maybe not this year laugh.gif
