(Rumor) 2009: Fourth Album:
Posted by Kedrew on October 5th, 2008
On October 4th 2008 in an interview with All Music, Rihanna confirmed that she is currently in the studio working on her fourth studio album. She stated that.

“I’m currently working on record number four and I’m having so much fun. I’m having so many new experiences and meeting so many new people, it’s amazing”.

Rihanna also stated that the album will head in a more Techno Rock direction saying,

“I want this album to head in the same direction as Good Girl Gone Bad but with even more edge. The tracks will be less R&B influenced and will have a feel closer to that of, Disturbia, Shut Up & Drive and Breakin’ Dishes”.

Rihanna also stated that she will be writing 3 tracks of the album herself and that they are quite different from her previous work and also stated that one of the tracks will fit into the punk-rock category”. She is also studying for a new and more even hot look. A release date for the album has not yet been announced, but it’s probably that it will came out in early 2009
(March/April period)

I don't get people in this forum! laugh.gif

First they're saying 'Come on Rihanna give us a new album' etc... but when news comes out that she is recording a new album, they're like, 'Does she ever Stop?' rolleyes.gif She's doing what is working for her at the moment! Can't wait though happy.gif

Sounds good, I'm happy to see her releasing lots smile.gif

Early 2009? heehee.gif She never stops! Literally. I swear I read an article saying she was taking a break in 2008 too... laugh.gif

Posted by: Jack 7th October 2008, 11:00 PM

LOL @ the generic ''she nevah stops u guyz!11'' comments. Her last album was in 2007 so it'd be a two year gap anyway. I'm rather excited for it personally, especially if its anywhere near as good as GGGB.

I don't mind how much she releases. She is fantastic. wub.gif

The international superstar that is Rihanna has got some magic up her sleeves for us on her fourth album, due in 2009.

Though she says the album is going in a more "techno rock" direction, it will have a couple eclectic tracks. One of the three that she is writing completely on her own is going to be more punk-rock.

But, this will all be processed through a pop lens - so fret not.

Think more Disturbia and less Hate That I Love You.

Overall, RiRi wants the album to be edgier than her smash Good Girl Gone Bad.

She is also in the process of synthesizing a new hotter look for herself.

We can't wait for her new album! We're totally excited for more RiRi we can shake our booties to!

GO AWAY FOR 3 MONTHS PLZ.

YOU ALL DON'T LIVE IN THE US, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. cry.gif

She is starting to move from one of my fave artists to grating my nerves. 8 f***ing singles from her last album, and a whole new single two months later. Not thrilled.

Posted by: Callum24 12th October 2008, 11:02 AM

Well she is one of the biggest artists around at the moment, her singles and albums do amazingly well so I can totally see why she's releasing a new album so soon.

Posted by: On Your Shore 12th October 2008, 10:05 PM

She probably releases so quickly so that she stays hot and remains on the charts. I personally can't wait! cheer.gif

Posted by: Fahrenheit 15th October 2008, 09:47 AM

Maybe she wants to finish her contracted record deal , so she can renegociate or have a look at other offers wink.gif .
I don't deny her that.
Go, Riri! She's allways on the move, that girl.

Does anyone know anything about the title of this? I read Dark Angels on some blog... huh.gif

Posted by: Michael. 13th July 2009, 01:23 PM

QUOTE
Forget the rumour about “Dark Angels”, “K.A.R.M.A”, “Bad Girl Gone Good” etc. because Rihanna has chosen the name of the album a few weeks ago, but wants to keep it as a secret until the last moment, to avoid any leak. Numerous artists are collaborating on this album, which will be very certainly an enormous success and will make the return of Rihanna an inevitable comeback worldwide.

Among the army of co-workers, we shall quote for example the famous leader of the group One Republic, Ryan Tedder, who composed two songs for Rihanna, among one completely played by a piano, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Soulja Boy, Shontelle, Jay-Z, Pharell Williams, and many others.

At this stage, we shall speak about no more “global tubes”, but about songs which should “mark the spirits forever”, to quote Def Jam. Rihanna has never been so selective and perfectionist in the choice of songs and in their interpretation. She participates actively in the writing of the lyrics and in the selection of the instrumental atmospheres. The album will be more rock’n'roll than the previous, “Good Girl Gone Bad”, and a bit more pop, but will keep the R&B.

It is evident that Rihanna wishes to be recognized as being a mature woman who imposes, at the same time that she shows her own musical style and her own originality. Rihanna likes her image of trendsetter and now wishes to use it in her songs. The album will be full of musical styles and will mark a change of 180° for Rihanna and her fans, who will not be disappointed with the result.

Several duets should appear on the album. By “some”, we hear (understand) two or three. At the moment nobody has recorded, with the exception of those with the singer Chris Brown, which were cancelled and will not appear on the album.

More details of the upcoming Rihanna material should arrive soon, along with the date of the upcoming single premiere that is set to happen next month.

This could and probably will change though.

Rihanna 'working with Justin, Kanye, Jay-Z'

Rihanna has reportedly enlisted the services of Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Jay-Z for her upcoming album.

According to Perez Hilton, sources at the 'Disturbia' star's record label have claimed that the singer is hoping to achieve a "more mature" sound on her fourth offering.

It is reported that the album will feature "more rock and pop notes" than Good Girl Gone Bad, and that a planned duet with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown has been scrapped.

Insiders at Def Jam added that Soulja Boy and Pharrell Williams have also been approached about possible collaborations.

Earlier this year, the singer denied reports that she had written a track with Lady GaGa about her split from Brown.

Also rumoured to be released in December.

So excited. wub.gif Hope it can match the caliber of Good Girl Gone Bad. Also hope there's a lot on the CD along the lines of Disturbia.

Rumour is the cover is fanmade but the title is infact "Rated R". With a title like that and all the big names she's working with this should be extreme. Love the whole risk she's taking with the genre direction of the album, can't wait to hear her new sound. Should be beyond perfection and even better than GGGB. cheer.gif

I heard that too. If she is she will be a certainty for #1 (well she would be anyway tongue.gif ). This is a great platform for promotion.

It will certainly be difficult for her to top GGGB. The majority of the album was single material (definitely BD and Cry wub.gif )

Sean Kingston talks about new Rihanna LP

Reggae star Sean Kingston has spoken out about writing music for Rihanna's new album.

Accrording to Angryape, the 'Beautiful Girls' singer announced that he is adding a Jamaican flavour to the new record.

"Her people said we want some stuff for Rihanna 'cause I'm from Jamaica," Kingston stated. "I got the island feel, so I'm writing some stuff right now [with producer Daddy Yankee] for her new album."

He continued: "You know what I like about her? She's never changed. Even when her music changed, she always represented for the Caribbean, always represented for Barbados.

"And that's what Sean Kingston does. He represents for Jamaica. Anything I do, I always put Jamaica in there. You can't leave where you're coming from and I like that about her."

Kingston added: "Every time we see each other, we talk in our accent. She's funny. She's dope. I like her."

QUOTE
For months now, rumors have been swirling that All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter was working with Rihanna on her upcoming album in a partnership made in hit maker heaven. After all, Ritter already has an impressive string of radio smashes to his credit ("Swing, Swing," "Dirty Little Secret," "Move Along" and, most recently, "Gives You Hell,"), and Rihanna, well, she's Rihanna.

The only problem was, neither party had actually commented on those rumors. Until last Friday, that is. As Ritter and AAR guitarist Nick Wheeler rehearsed with Wale and UCB for their performance on Sunday's VMAs, MTV News asked him about working with Rihanna. And he was more than willing to talk about the collaboration.

"I actually met with her a couple of weeks ago and the funny thing is, I actually don't remember half of it," Ritter laughed. "I remember the first half of meeting her, but then, as the night progressed, somebody decided to drink too much Jameson."

"But seriously, she's such a sweet girl that I'm gonna try to give her a little piece of my heart," he went on. "I wanna get in a room with her, and I wanna see what flies. I've got some songs for her, like, little things written, and I wanna see what she wants. See if she wants something aggressive and rock, and I've also kinda got some really fun, clubby ideas."

But that's not the only bit of collaborating Ritter and Wheeler have been doing as of late. They apparently also wrote a song for Weezer's upcoming album, Raditude, due October 27.

"We also just did a track with Rivers [Cuomo]for the new Weezer record!" Ritter announced. "When he asked us to do it, I fell on my knees and cried. We were playing this guy's songs when we were 13 at parties."

"A few weeks ago, we [went] to his house — so that was cool — sat in a room with three guitars, and just kinda, Ty had a little idea, and we kind of riffed on it," Wheeler added. "And then we never heard anything. So we're shooting our video for our next single, 'I Wanna,' yesterday, and our A&R guy comes to the shoot with a CD of the finished version, and I was like, 'Oh, so that happened!'

"And so I shot [Cuomo] an e-mail saying what a privilege it was working with him, and this sounds great, you guys did a great job with the song, you know, stuff like that," Wheeler continued. "And he replied back, and at the end, it said, 'Definitely miss your guitar playing on the final version.' So, I saved that e-mail, and it's probably gonna stay in my star file for quite a while."

Posted by: Jack 17th September 2009, 04:56 PM

Rihanna's voice and face are everywhere these days — owing to her guest spot on Jay-Z's hit "Run This Town" and multiple appearances out on the town, respectively — and she's been working on new material with Justin Timberlake, Norwegian hitmakers Stargate, All-American Rejects' Tyson Ritter and U.K. duo Chase & Status.

Later this month, she's slated to hit the studio with Tricky Stewart, who (with frequent collaborator The-Dream) helmed her 2007 breakthrough hit, "Umbrella," now the producer has revealed that he plans on working with the singer again on her forthcoming album. Although the pair has yet to hit the studio, he said that the songs he's been working on for the singer are ones he's "in love with" — and he hinted the singer might be releasing new music before the end of this year.

"I do believe it is [going to drop this year]," Stewart told RapUp.com. "We're actually just getting started. I just wrote some records that I'm in love with this past week.

"Rihanna and I will be getting in the studio sometime in the next two weeks, so we actually have not recorded anything for her new album yet."

At press time, reps for Rihanna had not responded to requests for comment on the status of her new recordings.

Stewart explained that despite the success of "Umbrella," they have no intention of trying to repeat that song's formula.

"Man, you know we can't do that. We come out with something that sounds like 'Umbrella,' they're gonna be saying that we tried to do something that sounded like 'Umbrella,' " he said. "That's not what the great artists do. They don't even allow you to do stuff like that. Every great artist always wants to hear something they've never heard before."

Stewart also said that Rihanna hasn't changed since they first started working together. "She's just a pleasure," he said. "She's a very sweet, down-to-earth person. You would never know how successful she is 'cause she's just so nice and warm. I guess maybe it's her background of being from the [Caribbean]. She's just a really sweet, warm person to be around."

So she's performing the single on the album's release date?
Will we hear it before then? unsure.gif

^ I should think and hope so!

Anyway I'm actually so so so excited for this now, the most anticipated comeback for me in a loooong time <3.

Yesterday, Rihanna announced via twitter, official website, facebook and myspace that she’ll release her first album since 2007’s Good Girl Gone Bad. The tweet reads: “The Wait Is Ova. Nov 23 09.” While reps would not confirm details of the album, one insider tells EW.com (Entertainment Weekly) that Nov. 23 looks to be an accurate release date, but that the album will not be titled The Wait Is Ova.

We should be hearing the single now then shouldn't we?

Posted by: Slowpoke 14th October 2009, 10:23 PM

That could be the single release date.

^Nope its album.

Rihanna will release her new album next month, it has been announced.

In a post on her Twitter page, the 21-year-old wrote: "The Wait Is Ova. Nov 23 09. (sic)" A representative for the star later confirmed the date as when her fourth studio record is released.

The LP's title and tracklisting are still to be revealed, but Rihanna has worked with a range of songwriters and producers including Ne-Yo, Akon, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Jay-Z and Pharrell on the project.

Last month, Ne-Yo admitted that fans should expect the singer to be "edgier" on her forthcoming album.

Sources confirm to Rap-Up.com that November 23 is Rihanna’s album release date and not a single release.

i was kinda hoping a new album next year...she still seems to be everywhere i look...i wanted her to go away 4 a while

Posted by: Jack 16th October 2009, 01:49 PM

I guess so but it feels like AGES ago since I first heard 'Umbrella'. I'd say the likes of Britney/Sats/Sugas are more overkill than Rihanna who seem to have a new 'lead single' each year recently.

Posted by: Joao. 16th October 2009, 11:32 PM

People need to make their minds up tbh lol
Earlier this year people were gagging for new stuff and when Umbrella was released people were like this is her 3rd album in 3 years and now that she actually has taken a break people either want her to go away longer or come back ASAP lol

Rihanna slicks her hair back and dons an eyepatch on the set of her new music video in New York City on Friday night (October 16).

The 21-year-old Barbadian songstress is set to release her new album next month — November 23rd.
On the same date, Rihanna will perform her new single off her upcoming album on Good Morning America. Can’t wait!

•Rihanna Daily heard some parts of Rihanna’s first single of her upcoming album. The song is amazing! You guys will love it, it will be another hit! We believe the name of the song is “The Wait Is Ova”. However, we are not going to post it in respect of Rihanna. Don’t worry, it will be released in a few days!
•Anthony Mandler is the director of Rihanna’s new music video. He directed “Unfaithful”, “We Ride”, “Shut Up And Drive”, “Hate That I Love You”, “Take A Bow”, “Disturbia”, “If I Never See Your Face Again”, “Live Your Life”, “Rehab” and “Run This Town”.

Rihanna’s upcoming album will be a double-disc set, according to Amazon.com! There are other albums that will drop on the same day (November 23): 50 Cent’s “Before I Self Destruct”, Timbaland’s “Shock Value” 2, Lady Gaga’s “The Fame Monster”, Jay Sean’s “All or Nothing”, Birdman’s “Pricele$$” and probably more.

In other news, Def Jam is doing everything they can to don’t let anybody find out infos on Rihanna’s single and album. They’re not even sending e-mails to record labels, they’re calling them.

And according to a trustable source, “we will all listen to Rihanna’s single at the same time”.

UPDATE: According to the british Amazon, Rihanna’s album title will be released on November 16, 2009!

Timbaland on the new album:

QUOTE
“I think she’s got, like, a million people writing songs for her, but the ones that we worked on she’s grown up a little bit and she has things that she can say,” he explained. “So that’s what we tried to do — craft things that are that of a young woman.” Timberlake added that because of the huge success of her last album, Rihanna wants to make sure she isn’t pigeonholed into one sound or vibe. “She broke onto the scene so hard with the last record — to have that many songs on the charts is impressive,” he said. “I think that the smartest thing she’s doing is not trying to emulate what she did but move forward … I’ve heard some of the stuff on the record and it’s awesome.”

Rihanna's follow-up single to 'Russian Roulette' has reportedly been announced.

According to Angry Ape, producer Mikkel S. Eriksen has confirmed the popstar's next single as 'The Wait Is Ova' from her upcoming album Rated R.

Eriksen told Adressa.no: "We were just told that they go for 'The Wait Is Ova' as next single.

"It will launch in a few weeks - before the album release. It means a lot to us to join a single-release in this format."

Rihanna's fourth studio album Rated R is to be released on November 23.

So basically they arent going to do much with RR and make it a buzz single just giving it airplay and then the proper single would be TWIO with airplay, video the lot..

ETA: Never mind shes shot the video already (23rd)

You can listen to 30 second clips of all the songs now (if you know where to find them...).
My favourites from the clips are 'ROCKSTAR 101', 'Fire Bomb' and 'Rude Boy'.

Not very keen on 'Mad House', 'The Last Song' or 'Cold Case Love' from the clips, but as I said, they're only 30 seconds long, so it's hard to judge really.

Gonna have to listen to the album clips a bit more as tbh I didn't really rate them but i hope full versions are better wub.gif

Congrats to both of you on winning tickets! Bet she'll be brilliant!

'Cold Case Love' has now leaked, I'm pretty sure the whole album will have leaked by the end of the weekend.
I really like 'Cold Case Love', although I don't think it'd make a very good single. Not really commercial enough.
It's much better than what the 30 second clip made it sound like! It properly breaks down about two thirds in. wub.gif

Pre-ordered the album today! biggrin.gif

I'm up to G4L atm ... I love the leaked songs, Fire Bomb, Rude Boy & Photographs <3. Stupid In Love is okay too even if they lyrics are a bit $h!t.

Don't really like G4L and Rockstar 101 though :/. Oh and listening to 'Cold Case Love' now ... it's absolutely STUNNING. wub.gif Should be a edited single, blates about Chris too even if she didnt write it haha!

Oh and for some reason my download didnt have 'The Last Song' on it ... is it worth downloading off of LimeWire or w/e or is it poo?

Just giving it my first listen:

9 'Mad House' - Probably one of my favourite intro's to an album, ever! ohmy.gif
9 'Wait Your Turn'
8 'Hard'
8 'Stupid In Love' - Most certainly about Chris, is it not? laugh.gif Nice song though.
7 'Rockstar 101' - Not my favourite, but it's still v. good. probably a grower?
11 'Russian Roulette' - I am GUTTED I have done my decade countdown thing without including this! This'd be Top 20 now! I ADORE IT!
9 'Fire Bomb' - The one I was most excited for from the clips, and I'm NOT disappointed! It's AMAZING! wub.gif
7 'Rude Boy' - Another good song. has potential to grow on me, but on first listen the "WA-WA-WA"'s are annoying heehee.gif Maybe they need some getting used too LOL
6 'Photographs' - Not keen at the moment. It's alright I suppose, just forgettable for now.
7 'G4L' - The backing track on this reminds me of something from a soundtrack like 'Adulthood' or something. Decent song though.
9 'Te Amo' - LOVE this! wub.gif So glad they had it on the album. It doesn't sound too out of place on the album either ohmy.gif
9 'Cold Case Love' - The outro is EPIC! wub.gif
8 'The Last Song' - Really nice album closer.

This album is brilliant. Really like the new direction for her. She also can't be accused of releasing the same sound as before etc... I actually cannot wait to see if she does a tour, coz with these songs as a part of it, it's going to be EPIC! Everything about this era has worked perfectly imo. She has managed to come off the back of a major era, take a risk and have that risk pull off amazingly.

I'M OFF TO PRE-ORDER NOW!

Posted by: Jack 14th November 2009, 01:26 AM

Ooh I agree about there being a tour, she was really good on the GGGB tour but she looks like she's gained confidnce (although the Chris thing has probably set her back again) and her vocals have improved even more (mostly Russian Roulette and Cold Case Love).

Oh and I thought 'Cold Case Love' sounded like it was written about Chris rather than 'Stupid Love', the lyrics fit the situation so much! Even if she didn't actually write it haha.

She did say that the events of this year have made her more fearless when making the album. Tbh, im not sure if its good that im happy that shes more fearless? I dont condone what happened of course but shes come out stronger and i guess im more happy over that than anything else but yah.

It does show in the album that shes been able to take more risks and they are good risks, they have defo worked for the best biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cremey 14th November 2009, 10:42 AM

08 Mad House - Really good album opener! Really sets the album up.
08 Wait Your Turn - I think I played this too much when it first leaked. I love the chorus, but the rest of the song lets it down slightly.
11 Hard - Aaaah I love this so much. I wish there were more songs on the album with this 'urban' feel, personally. wub.gif
07 Stupid In Love - This is nice enough, not a stand out though.
09 Rockstar 101 - I love this and I think it'll grow more in time. The chorus is a slight letdown, love the 'got my middle finger up, I don't really give a f***' line. wub.gif
10 Russian Roulette - Brilliant choice for lead single imo, going against the expected uptempo first single. It's so emotional and the video is perfect!
09 Fire Bomb - EXCELLENT! Love the backing track, the slightly rocky element goes really well with Rihanna's voice in this I think.
09 Rude Boy - This is brilliant. The only really uptempo song on the album I guess. It's definitely single material imo.
09 Photographs - As I've said before, this reminds me a bit of '3 Words' (although a superior version tongue.gif). Will.I.Am's part is brilliant too.
7.5 G4L - A bit forgettable, but still pretty decent. The chorus annoys me slightly though.
09 Te Amo - When this first leaked I absolutely loved it and I still love it now. I've played it quite a lot though, so I'll probably play the rest of the album more than this.
09 Cold Case Love - Love this! The breakdown at the end is brilliant especially.
06 The Last Song - I like this, but it's a bit...boring? Don't know, doesn't really seem to go anywhere. It's 'nice', but that's all really.

Overall, brilliant album! I much prefer it to GGGB.
I love the new direction she's taken for this, the whole 'edgy' vibe really suits her as an artist. I just love how she's NOT gone with the whole 'electro' thing every other huge female artist seems to be doing now. I think it would've been so easy for her to go down that route, but by NOT doing that, it's paid off big time imo. I think this album will be the one which defines her sound.

My only slight disappointment is that there aren't any more properly urban songs like 'Hard'. Except for that, it's brilliant. wub.gif

1. Mad House - It's a very good opener, probably one of my favourite album intro's! 9/10
2. Wait Your Turn - I loved this when I first heard it, and I'm still not bored of it! Really hope it becomes an official single. 9/10
3. Hard - LOVE it! It's just a great song, easily one of my favourites off, the album. 10/10
4. Stupid In Love - This is a good song, but it's probably one of my least favourites off the album. 7/10
5. Rockstar 101 - I really like this song. I think it's definitely a grower. 8/10
6. Russian Roulette - Excellent comeback single. Such a good meaning, and the video suits the song very well! wub.gif 11/10
7. Fire Bomb -
8. Rude Boy - Another brilliant song! Not much else to say lol. 9/10
9. Photographs - As everyone else, this does seem to remind me slightly of '3 Words', mostly because of Will.i.am's featuring in the song. A lovely song. 9/10
10. G4L - It's an 'OK' song, but it's nothing special. 6/10
11. Te Amo - I still love this! I have overplayed it so much, but I don't think I'll get bored of it. I won't play it too much though, just to make sure I don't. tongue.gif 9/10
12. Cold Case Love - A brilliant song! The outro is amazing. wub.gif 9/10
13. The Last Song - It's a nice track! I think it's the best choice for the album closer (and not just because of the title tongue.gif ). 8/10

Overestimated it. It's great but not that great. Apart from orgasmic singles that leaked prior to the whole album I really like Cold Case Love, Te Amo and Stupid In Love. Rude Boy annoys me v.much.

:'(

Posted by: J-o-e 14th November 2009, 03:13 PM

Im so dissapointed, I love hard but apart from that theres not another song thats worth a second listen, so boring and whilst I can see her growth as an artist since GGGB its just not strong material.

Posted by: Jack 14th November 2009, 10:36 PM

She'll be releasing a four disk album thing with 'Music Of The Sun', 'A Girl Like Me', 'Good Girl Gone Bad' and of course 'Rated R' all together. Not sure if it'll only be in the US but it'd be cool for those who haven't got those albums. I would buy it but essentially it'd be a bit pointless having two copies of each album, I think I'll just stick to the Standard Edition. heehee.gif

Posted by: Medicated Soap 14th November 2009, 11:04 PM

Incredibly boring. It's Rihanna singing over hip hop beats. :/ A huge letdown after the stunning Good Girl Gone Bad...Hard is the only really nice track on the whole album tbh. Oh, Cold Case Love is phenomonal too. But otherwise? Snoozefest.

Posted by: Just Plain Steve 15th November 2009, 12:08 AM

This album is actually amazing.

Posted by: Medicated Soap 15th November 2009, 05:58 PM

I'm liking it a bit more today, but it's a bit...I dunno. All of the songs surprisingly start off incredibly strong, but kinda miss the mark in terms of chorus / the rest of the song. Like I said, most of these would suit a rapper better than Rihanna.

Hard is amazing though. As well as Cold Case Love.

Got this today, only listened the whole thing through once. All sorts of genres coming through, love how she's re-inventing herself all the time. Album completely different to her previous 3. I already hate the song with Ne-Yo and the one with Will I Am. Already adoring Cold Case Love, Hard, G4L, Fire Bomb, Wait Your Turn. Will do a review eventually. Love RiRi. I think everyone remembers how obsessed I was with her in the GGGB era. Oh the old days. drama.gif

Posted by: Di'Fan 19th November 2009, 10:41 PM

'fire bomb' is the bomb. laugh.gif
but seriously, that has to be the best on the album, which is saying something because 'russian roulette' is fantastic. 'fire bomb' is just spectacular. goes to show how versatile rihanna is. wub.gif
amazing album.

I wish I had enough money to buy the album. sad.gif May just get it for christmas now I think.

Also she had a lot of writing credits on the album, helped to write every track except for 'Russian Roulette', 'Stupid In Love', 'Cold Case Love' and 'Photographs'. ohmy.gif

Rihanna Talks Barbed Wire on Rated R Album Cover

Rihanna has been facing a little bit of criticism for the covers related to her new album, Rated R due to the fact that she was covered in nothing but barbed wire in the single cover of Russian Roulette. However, Rihanna is defending herself and doesn't see anything wrong with it.

During a radio interview Rihanna said,
"I definitely thought the barbed wire was cool. It was a symbol of strength but fearlessness all at once, that's why we used it."

She says that getting the barbed wire around her head wasn't easy,
"We took our time and wrapped that barbed wire around me. It took forever because we had to wrap it round the front of me a few times more than the rest of me so it would cover the necessary."

Also a stunning new track has been leaked in full, it features Justin Timberlake and will act as the bonus track for the UK Edition of Rated R. Really worth listening to, JT and RiRi always do the incredible when together. wub.gif

Cold Case Love is epic.

Posted by: Bang_ 22nd November 2009, 05:38 PM

09 Mad House :: Such an epic intro to an album imo
09 Wait Your Turn :: Really loove the chorus wub.gif
10 Hard :: Really love how heavy the backing is wub.gif
07 Stupid In Love :: Think I'll grow to love this.
06 Rockstar 101 :: Not overly keen on this, possibly
10 Russian Roulette :: DEFINATELY the best song on the album. Incredible wub.gif
06 Fire Bomb :: Again, not loving this that much.
08 Rude Boy :: Really didn't like this on first listen, certainly grown on me wub.gif
07 Photographs :: Nice enough!
10 G4L :: Simply amaze wub.gif! Something about it I lovee.
09 Te Amo :: Gorgeous
10 Cold Case Love :: Absolutely amazing, especially the end wub.gif
08 The Last Song :: Very good too.

10 Hole In My Head :: Amaze.

I have heard clips of the songs on itunes. Some of the tracks sound good but overall a much darker feel to the album and less pop orientated than her last album.

Posted by: Just Plain Steve 24th November 2009, 05:27 PM

I really love about 8 songs on the album.

Posted by: Jack 24th November 2009, 05:49 PM

I only dislike 'G4L' and 'Rockstar 101'.

'Fire Bomb' my favourite, hopefully a single. For me, it's like the older, cooler, better looking brother of "Rehab"!

Yeah 'Fire Bomb' is immense. wub.gif Deffo one of my faves I think.

Posted by: Jonjo 24th November 2009, 10:13 PM

Yeah. It's my favourite without doubt. It's the closest we'll get to anything on GGGB anyway laugh.gif

Posted by: Slowpoke 24th November 2009, 10:25 PM

I'll probably get shtick for this, but I'd have loved 'Fire Bomb' to have been the lead single (if she had to go with a ballad).

Posted by: Di'Fan 24th November 2009, 10:38 PM

okay, here's what I think, in order of best to worst:

01: russian roulette - 10/10 best on the album. perfect choice for first single as it's such a grower.
02: fire bomb - 10/10 while 'russian roulette' is a grower, this is just fantastic anyway. so different to anything else she's done.
03: te amo - 9.5/10 this is also such an amazing ballad.
04: hard - 9/10 probably her best collabaration. which says something because when she collabarates with a rapper it's awful (see 'run this town').
05: stupid in love - 9/10 another amazing ballad. brilliant lyrics.
06: rude boy - 8/10 this is a good urban toon as well.
07: G4L - 8/10 hmm, well there are better songs than this on the album but it's good.
08: wait your turn - 8/10 basically the same as the 'G4L' comment, I like it but not as good as some others. hope it's not second single though...
09: mad house - 8/10 kind of offputting that it's just a 1 minute intro to the album, but I still like it.
10: rockstar 101 - 8/10 this is good.
11: cold case love - 7.5/10 hmm, I like it and how it changes throughout the song, but I see it a little too slow.
12: the last song - 7/10 same as above really, just a tiny bit dull.
13: photographs - 7/10 erm, I must have missed will's parts? thought a collabaration witht he two of them would have been better than this but it's not really, kind of sounds like cheryl cole's '3 word's which also has will. hmm...

fantastic album. worth the wait.

Posted by: Slowpoke 24th November 2009, 11:17 PM

06 Mad House
09 Wait Your Turn
09 Hard
06 Stupid In Love
07 Rockstar 101
08 Russian Roulette
10 Fire Bomb
07 Rude Boy
05 Photographs
07 G4L
08 Te Amo
06 Cold Case Love
07 The Last Song

Bolded favourites.

I really didn't think she'd be able to do it - but she nailed it. After what must have been so much pressure, to follow up to what was one of the biggest albums of the last two years (Good Girl Gone Bad), she's done better than I could have hoped for. My favourite track on the album is "Fire Bomb" which is fast becoming one of my favourite Rihanna songs EVER. I really hope it's her next single. "Hard" and "Wait Your Turn" are great up-tempo numbers and obviously, "Russian Roulette", whilst being far from the best on the album, is utterly beautiful. "Rated R" is her most adventurous work yet.

4/5

Posted by: Medicated Soap 25th November 2009, 02:51 AM

It's flopping in the US. :')

It's a bit sad to see because I do quite like her, but this album is weak. Definitely saw it coming. She could turn things around a bit with a radio edit of Cold Case Love. Maybe.

Predicted 175k in US. Dire sad.gif

Posted by: Sinful 25th November 2009, 03:44 PM

Is anyone else thinking a swift re-release by early summer with some more commerical-sounding tunes in an attempt to save this era?

She's got some lovely songs on there, but they're all very dark and emotional; something that will be quite hit or miss with the public and it seems that its missing judging by 'Russian Roullette.' I pray that 'Hard' can do something for the album.

Posted by: Jack 25th November 2009, 03:51 PM

Oh dear. sad.gif Maybe this is her 'My December' after all. It'll still go down as a fan favourite I should imagine when she most likely returns with a more commercial sounding album.

this is a brilliant album

I thought I'd be disappointed after reading some of the reviews/comments but maybe it seemed ten times better because I listened to it directly after finishing Mariah's new borefest for the first time...

I don't agree that it lacks hooks either...sure, the songs are more subtle to Good Girl Gone Bad, but not so much that there are no melodies evident here...great stuff biggrin.gif

Yeah. I don't see how 175k is "dire". heehee.gif Especially given the current sales climate.

Susan is about to do 600k and GaGa 350k and ADAM LAMBERT doing bout 275k... Rihanna's coming off a HUGE album that sold 2.5million copies in the US. 175k is POOR, very poor. Plus we're going into the holiday season now, she should be sailing with about 250k by now.

Posted by: Propilot87 27th November 2009, 05:20 PM

Didnt Rihanna's last album only sell 162k in the first week? and that was off the back of Umbrella one of her biggest hits to date, yes it sold over 2.5 million but how many singles did she have to get out there to get that figure? and dont forget the re-release.

#9 debut for the album in ireland this week.

Compared to them 3, yeah, but this is Rihanna's biggest opening sales isn't it? It's hardly anything to call "dire" tongue.gif Considering this era has been a bit of a mess in the US so far, I for one am happy she's managed to rope in quite healthy debut sales. I for one, wasn't expecting anymore after 'Russian Roulette' bombing as much as it has been doing. I just hope it's a slow burner and manages to keep a steady pace of sales.

Posted by: Simon. 28th November 2009, 11:00 PM

On Rude Boy when she sings "toooniight" she sounds like Beyonce.

Posted by: Silver Rocket 29th November 2009, 04:35 PM

The reason the last album did so well and sold consistently wasn't necessarily because it was her, but it was an album packed full of killer hits, the material on this album isn't as hooky/appealing, I only see this album struggling in future after getting off to such a shaky start. sad.gif

I'm not dissing the album, it's decent enough but that's the way it is.

Posted by: Jack 29th November 2009, 04:46 PM

Hmmm ... I think it could do okay with the right singles picked. 'Rude Boy' and 'Fire Bomb' would especially go down well over here I should imagine.

But yeah it won't do anywhere near as well as GGGB. sad.gif It should do a little better than the first two though, well, hopefully.

I'm so surprised at how much I love this, by far my most listened to and loved album this week...it's such a huge grower

I don't understand the hate at all, it's stunning - it's good that she's diversified in my opinion! did we really want a carbon copy of Good Girl Gone Bad? I hate it when artist bring out the same sort of thing over and over

and unlike GGGB, I actually like every single song on here whereas there were about four tracks on there that didn't interest me in the slightest, even though the rest of the album more than made up for it wub.gif

i love this album so much. it takes a few listens but im totally hooked. i think the sales are fine, i see many hits on it, not mega smashes like umbrella, but songs that will keep the sales going.

to me this album shows progression and id take that over sales anyday. it will go platinum in america and the uk, so im not bothered. it is on 240,000 now in the us after selling 58,000+ copies 2nd week. judging by its midweek in the uk it sgould see another 40k+ week.

my standout tracks are photographs, hard, russian roulette and fire bomb.

glad people are finally getting into this album wub.gif

it surprises me that I LOVED everything about it on first listen and still do - my personal favourite album of hers quite easily, yes Good Girl Gone Bad had all of the smash singles, but I didn't care for most of the filler on it. Rated R on the other hand has no song that I have the urge to skip.

Posted by: Jack 10th January 2010, 05:24 PM

Totally agree with you Rich! I never thought she'd be able to top GGGB but she has done easily with 'Rated R' imo, I prefer the artistic direction and it still has alot of commercial songs on it as well I think. The only songs I'm not really keen on are 'Rockstar 101' and 'G4L' but even they are pretty decent. Shame it hasn't had major chart success that it deserves.

Hopefully the next single will boost album sales a bit.

Hard for May release, Te Amo in August, re-release in November plzthxxxx

I really doubt 'Te Amo' would do that much. sad.gif

She needs to release 'Fire Bomb' wub.gif.

Just seen an advert for this on the telly, and I am in STITCHES sad.gif

They said:

"Buy Rihanna's 'Rated R' album for £9.99! The perfect gift for "Mothers Day"."

LMFAO! If there's one thing 'Rated R' isn't, that's perfect for 'Mothers Day' or whatever HAHA! I really can't imagine, my mum or anyone elses for that matter, shaking her "thang" to 'Rude Boy' or 'Hard'! LOLOLOL

An insider at Def Jam posted this on Rihanna Daily:

Quote:
1. “Photographs” was chosen as the next UK single 2 weeks ago, (not sure about the US). Rihanna and Will.I.am have already discussed details on a video to be shot at the end of spring or beginning of summer.

2. Rihanna is not working on a new album. Def Jam is asking songwriters to submit songs for a end-of-the-year project. Expect this to be similar to Rated R’s version of The Fame Monster.

3. In the last quarter of 2010 Rihanna will take a break from touring to promote the project.

4. After “Photographs”, they are choosing “Stupid in Love”, “Fire Bomb”, or “Rockstar 101″. One of these will probably be the last single until the EP is released.

5. Producers asked to submit songs: Justin Timberlake, Stargate, Darkchild, The Dream, Tricky Stewart and possibly James Faunteleroy.

6. Expect the 1st single off the new version of Rated R in the last quarter of 2010

^^ ohmy.gif

Ooh I hope that's true, all sounds great imo!
Really like 'Photographs', but the last single definitely needs to be 'Fire Bomb'. 'Rockstar 101' wouldn't be a great choice for single and 'Stupid in Love' would just be awful!

1. NOOOOO! cry.gif I really cannot see the fuss with this song AT ALL! It makes her look like she's only doing it because it's featuring Will.I.Am! Rihanna STOP! You don't need him now, you have a proper smash in 'Rude Boy' so you have got your big hit of the era! sad.gif

2. HAHA! It was inevitable really LOL. 'Rated R: Still Censored'? kink.gif

3. Good. Another XF performance? ohmy.gif

4. 'FIRE BOMB'! 'FIRE BOMB'! 'FIRE BOMB'! 'FIRE BOMB'! But I have an incredibly crap feeling (as much as I love it) it'll be 'Rockstar 101'! sad.gif

5. Oooft. Like all those producers!

6. AHHHH! Will she be going back to GGGB sorta music? Or will she stick with Rated R, but more 'Rude Boy' side of things... Hmmm...

LOOKING FORWARD TO IT! ohmy.gif

please not Photographs. Fire Bomb then Rockstar 101 please.

Posted by: Tyler 10th March 2010, 07:55 PM

FIREBOMB. YES PLZ.

Posted by: Sinful 10th March 2010, 08:28 PM

'Fire Bomb' before 'Photographs' plzzzzzzzz. 'Fire Bomb' will peak higher if released before, and probably shift a good few albums, 'Photographs' is a nice era closer but I fear that being released 3rd will harm FB's final peak. I feel bad for 'Rockstar' if it doesn't get picked sad.gif

Posted by: Tyler 10th March 2010, 09:36 PM

And I think Photographs is a GREAT choice for the next single. Another top 10 hit for her.

Posted by: Chris. 10th March 2010, 09:40 PM

If it's going to be a 'The Fame Monster' type of rerelease I hope it's sold seperately! I actually wouldn't mind Photographs if it wasn't for will.i.am's rap which just spoils the song.

Posted by: Silver Rocket 11th March 2010, 12:16 AM

'Rockstar 101' is my firm favourite, but I can't really see how it would work as a single.

I see why they (allegedly) picked 'Photographs', anything with Will.I.Am on it is pretty much guaranteed to do well regardless. Just look at '3 Words' for example... (obviously 'Photographs' is leaps and bounds better though!)

Posted by: Jack 11th March 2010, 12:26 AM

I'd prefer it if they went for Fire Bomb before Photographs but both are pretty good single choices for the UK biggrin.gif.

Really excited for the re-release as well. wub.gif

After years of bitching, I've decided to listen to Rihanna's "Rated R" album... and to my shock and surprise it is FANTASTIC. Just listened to it on Napster, might just buy it for my collection...

1. Mad House ***
I expected some gruntled voice to say "If you listen to this for 10 more seconds you will die in 7 days" but I went a bit paranoid I think laugh.gif It did its job in making me scared...

2. Wait your turn ****
I've known this song for a year obviously, and it's always been a guilty pleasure of mine. The intro and this song did not glue well together, that's the only negative I'll give it.

3. Hard ****
Another one I've known for about a year, and has been as much as a guilty pleasure as "Wait your turn". The chorus repeats a lot, but doesn't get all too repetitive. The song however doesn't show off her voice in a positive manner, but I guess you don't need that for a song like this.

4. Stupid in love ***
It's a very nice ballad, a bit of a darker version of "Unfaithful". I prefer this one to said song. It's another one that doesn't convince me of Rihanna's vocals. The lyrics are typical Ne-Yo which leaves me equally unimpressed.

5. Rockstar 101 ****
One of the songs the majority would know, but I was unaware of. Slash to me doesn't add anything more to the song. I think this is the first song on the album that defines its style. I picture this would be amazing live as well.

6. Russian Roulette ****
I was not a fan of the song when it first came out, and the video emotionally kicked into me sometimes. It grew on me the more I heard it. I think the lyrics let this one down a bit.

7. Fire bomb *****
ANTHEM! Absolutely love it. In my opinion it shows the attitude of the album, and compliments her voice very well. Clearly the best so far.

8. Rude boy *****
Supercatchy. Never grew old, probably the first song of the Rated R era that I instantly liked and did not hide my admiration for. Sexy and sensual, probably the more positive of the songs on this album. Likely that's the reason I like it a lot.

9. Photographs ****
I am not really a fan of will.i.am which degrades the song a small bit. Especially like the lyrics, and the 80's new age influence. It would however not remain on my playlists, probably due to the sole reason will.i.am is on the track.

10. G4L ****
Sensual, sexy and mesmerizing. Great electrosounds. A good representation of the album's attitude and great lyrics. The first and last lines would make awesome shirts tongue.gif

11. Te amo ****
Another one I liked instantly. Probably the best lyric of any of the songs, a lot of deeper meaning. The latino influences flow well with the electronic sounds.

12. Cold case love *****
6 minutes... long sit but it's a song that wouldn't fit in 3 minutes. This is brilliant stuff... it especially starts catching me from the point the bpm turns up. One of the highlights without a doubt.

13. The last song ***
First of all appropriate title tongue.gif Closing the album with "Cold case love" would've caused an anticlimax, but in my opinion this is not the most brilliant way to end this album. I'd have probably switched this song's running order with "Fire bomb" to give it an orgasmic ending.

This album, has made me appreciate Rihanna in a completely different level. The best song on the album to me is "Fire bomb", weakest "Stupid in love". Counting it all up I give it a 4.3/5. Great job, and can't wait to hear a happier Rihanna on the next album... anxiously awaiting.

BABY PUT THE WORK IN LIKE A CHAMPION.

Been listening to 'Rated R' quite a bit over the past few days. Still absolutely love it.
Especially 'Wait Your Turn', hadn't listened to it in FOREVER but it's so damn good. Finally starting to really like 'G4L' too, especially the middle 8.

Safely and easily one of my favourite albums of all time.

Her vocals, her style, the music itself, the visuals, the tour.

This era had EVERYTHING for me.

The track listing also works so well, and even though at the time of release I loved Rude Boy but not as part of the album I fully get why it’s there now.

And it still remains her best album by a long way for me.

She’s made good albums since and before this as it followed GGGB which was huge and Loud came just after it become her biggest album.

I miss this Rihanna though. When I watch clips of her on YT doing promo this album seems to be the one that means the most to her or at least that’s how it came across to me.

And to think she was younger than me now when she released this and it’s such a mature sounding album. Signs of her talent there I guess.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 16th July 2019, 06:29 PM

Also that comment saying Rihanna wasn’t recording a new album at the time.

Was that lies as we all now know we got LOUD or was it genuinely right at the time?

Was LOUD like a happy accident what happened or was the re release scrapped?

I’d have loved to have seen Rated R extended as it’s her best album.

It’s #9 position in the UK too is so meh sad.gif I know it sold like 700K and spent ages on the charts but it deserved #1!
Still it was better than peaking at #16 which was where it entered.

But what about the actual ALBUM?

Posted by: Jordan Lee 11th April 2020, 11:28 AM

I’ve said it so many times in this thread and on this forum but this is definitely her best album as a whole in my opinion.

It’s really genius, a bit ahead of its time and the fact she recorded this at such a difficult time in her life and at the age she was too is just remarkable. It’s genuinely one of my favourite albums of all time.

I think this was the major turning point for her where she went from pop star to artist! It’s an album what’s aged really well too.

I’m gonna relisten later today wub.gif

So weird to thunk this debuted at #16 in the UK! Imagine a Rihanna album doing that now. At least it eventually went top ten. I remember this come out the same day / week as The Fame Monster as well. My 2009 favourite release week for sure wub.gif

Posted by: StupidLove 11th April 2020, 11:47 AM

I agree completely.

This album is stellar and is often overviewed because it didn't produces smashes like her other albums, minus Rude Boy. This album was just so prolific to me especially after the Chris Brown incident and Cold Case Love is just so mesmerising. I view this as her best album and listen to it regularly. The only tracks I'd skip would be Stupid In Love and perhaps Rockstar 101. But otherwise magical.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 19th May 2020, 04:12 PM

I find it so shocking that the label didn’t want the most commercial song on the album to be a single!

Posted by: Andrew. 19th May 2020, 04:14 PM

What on earth roc nation? The album wouldn't have even gone top 10 if it wasn't for Rude Boy!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 19th May 2020, 06:25 PM

I always low key thought it was the other way around and that Rih probably wanted other single choices so to hear that shook me!

Yeah I would have expected Rihanna to have fought for 'Wait Your Turn' to be pushed properly. Quite a surprise to think the record company didn't hear the potential in 'Rude Boy'!

Posted by: Andrew. 19th May 2020, 08:04 PM

Rude Boy's such an obvious single though drama.gif Surely the label could've seen that the darker singles approach didn't help the album as it peaked at #4 in the US (which is fine but disappointing after how massive the GGGB era was) and #16 in the UK and seen the pop smash before their eyes. I mean obviously they did in the end but come on x

Such a great album. Most probably her best album for me.

"Russian Roulette" was such a serve. I'm so glad it was the lead single. It's a shame it was released during Rihanna's 1 album a year phase. They could've easily gone 6+ singles deep with this album. "Firebomb", "Photographs" and "Stupid In Love" would've been great singles. It's also a crime that "Te Amo" wasn't released to radio in the US. I would've loved the era going something like

1. "Russian Roulette"
1.5. "Hard" (US only)
2. "Rude Boy"
3. "Te Amo"
4. "Firebomb"
5. "Photographs"
6. "Stupid In Love"
