It starts today! With the women's 100m heats.

That for me I hope could be a thrilling race with Dina Asher-Smith, the last three Olympic gold medalists Jamaican duo Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah.

Asher-Smith faces an anxious wait now only third with 11.15.

This is the part of the Olympics I've looked forward to most. It looks like the stadium is not completely empty like I thought it would be.

It's really sad for Dina Asher Smith that she's pulling out of the 200m because of a hamstring injury after failing to qualify for the 100m final. She'll have a good chance in the Paris Olympics which are only 3 years away.

A real shame for Asher-Smith but perfectly understandable given the hamstring injury none of us knew existed until this afternoon. A Jamaican 1-2-3 was quite fun to watch though (even if the 1 and 2 don't actually seem to like each other whoops)

Yes Fraser-Pryce and Thompson-Herah definity don't like each other. They're running in the 4x100m relay together, I think it is to do with Thompson-Herah being coached by Fraser-Pryce's former coach. 10.60 the second fastest in history, 6 under 11 seconds.

Hughes disqualified for a false start in the 100m final, how anticlimactic. What is it with Brits and false starting today drama.gif

A surprise (I think?) victory for Lamont Marcell Jacobs of Italy! Italy quickly doubling their gold medal tally from 2 to 4 today as they took a tied gold medal in the high jump earlier as well - they've been picking up a ton of silvers and bronzes so it's good to see them finally getting a couple more golds.

Qatar taking the other high jump gold, giving them their 2nd gold medal of these Olympics and of all time!

I was surprised with Italy, thought one of the Americans would take it for sure. Great stuff for the Italian guy, he looked really overwhelmed, boo hiss at the GB guy getting himself disqualified~

We'll never know how Zharnel Hughes would have done now. I think they should allow one false start in the final. I think they stopped allowing false starts as it was delaying the schedule of the heats and later rounds but they could have changed that rule for the final.

Well done to the Italian runner and also that Venezuelan woman breaking the world record in the triple jump. Having long legs certainly seems to be an advantage in that event.
