Will post my want winners and predictions in a bit Will be great to see some more too
I will start the activities in around half an hour
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 1
AMERICAN SNIPER
So starting us off is the box office behemoth which is the biggest grossing film of 2014 surprisingly managing to overthrow Katniss and Groot. American Sniper is a drama about Chris Kyle who has the most ever recorded kills and was in the navy. He is played very well by Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller is also amazing. The script is very good and Clint Eastwood gives a very good direction. This deserves to be up for best picture and I hope it manages to pick up a couple of awards tonight.
Whiplash and American Sniper are the only two I haven't seen. Dunno if I'll get time to watch them either but they seemed the less hyped of the lot so I never got round to them.
If I were to rank the ones I have seen:
01. The Grand Budapest Hotel
02. Birdman
03. Boyhood
04. The Imitation Game
05. Selma
06. The Theory of Everything
The top 3 are all amazing and I hope they all win something at least - The Grand Budapest Hotel is probably my favourite as it just got everything right - story, cinematography, characters, humour, it had everything. Though Birdman was incredibly smart in most ways and Boyhood was technically and thematically brilliant.
The other three are all good too but not quite reaching the heights of the top 3 - The Imitation Game was an excellently intense discovery and great as I knew nothing about the subject of the film prior, I also wasn't informed much about what happened in Selma back then so Selma was good in a similar way. Both fantastic performances from the leads as well (and hard to watch).
The only reason The Theory of Everything is last as Eddie Redmayne's performance massively overshadows what is a fairly predictable story ultimately. But it was still very hard to fault as a film apart from that as it certainly had a lot of heart in it.
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 2
BIRDMAN
Number 2 nominee we are going through is also the 2nd best nominee this year. Birdman absolutely flourishes from it's performances, direction, script and cinematography. Birdman is one of the best films of last year and is highly entertaining with a great script. The cinematography by Lubezki is absolutely amazing, he is definitely one of the best cinematographers who won the award for Gravity last year. The directing is also great and I love the one-shot take. The acting is also superb. Michael Keaton is great and Emma Stone, Edward Norton and Naomi Watts bring great supporting performances. Birdman is amazing and it should pick up some big awards tonight including one for Michael Keaton possibly.
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 3
BOYHOOD
So the favourite to win best picture and birdman looking like it's only challenger, Boyhood is our next film under the spotlight. And boyhood deserves to win best picture as it is the best of the nominees and one of the best films of last year. Everything about it is absolutely perfect, the script is nice and the direction is very good. However Boyhood elevates into a classic due to 3 things- acting, story and something I have now forgotten. The acting is absolutely stunning. Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater are both superb in their roles and Ethan Hawke was absolutely fantastic. Patricia Arquette was also amazing though I preferred the other 3. The story is compelling and the unique idea of it being filmed over 12 years is so amazing. Another thing great about Boyhood is that it flows so well and you can tell years have gone passed due to hair change and also great entertainment references such as the dark knight/tropic thunder/pineapple express film mentions and the ICONIC telephone video. The Oops I Did It Again scene near the start is absolutely fabulous and this is 2 and 3/4 hours of absolute joy. I hope this wins best picture and it will definitely win a lot tonight, include a lock for best supporting actress.
The spotlights will continue later, hope you find them interesting
My ranking of the Best Picture category, may do some of the others later
1 Boyhood
2 The Imitation Game
3 Birdman
4 Whiplash
5 The Theory of Everything
6 The Grand Budapest Hotel
7 Selma
8 American Sniper
Really hope Boyhood takes home the big prize, I feel like it's pretty tight between that and Birdman going into the ceremony. But I feel myself rooting for Birdman in a way too, I'd be happy for it to win even though I liked it rather than loved it. It did surpass my expectations though and the performances from Emma Stone and Edward Norton were top notch.
Birdman and Whiplash are the pretty interchangeable ones for me. American Sniper was by far and away the worst, would rather have Gone Girl in the category or even Foxcatcher (which would still be in my bottom two but it would've made the category a bit more stronger ).
Wild deserved to be nominated for best picture along with gone girl over Budapest hotel and theory of everything
Omg how could I forget about Wild! If it was nominated it would be ranked second and putting up a bit of a fight with Boyhood.
Wild would be top for me, and probably top for me for 2014 as well
Such an amazing superb movie, still hope Reese can win best actress even though its a pipe dream She gives one of the best performances ever in my view
3 HOURS TO GO TILL RED CARPET
I will try and get the best picture summaries done from about 10pm but if anyone else wants to do a few, it is fine by me

My girlfriend and I will be staying up to watch it!! We watched most of the movies and picked:
My RANK of the BP nominees
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Theory of Everything
Selma
The Imitation Game
Boyhood
Whiplash
Birdman
American Sniper
1-5 were all great, Whiplash was very good and I'd happily never watch the last 2 again.
The only categories I have any doubt over who will win (of which I care about, so all the actings ones, direction, the two BP categories and song) are:
Actor: I THINK Keaton, but hope Redmayne
Film: I THINK Boyhood, but Birdman has been building up some serious momentum of late
Director: THINK Linklater, but Birdman man could easily sneak this too. If Boyhood misses best pic then Linklater will definitely get this.
Animated: SHOULD be Big Hero 6 of the nominees but I fear it will be Dragon, totally undeservedly.
The Grand Budapest Hotel is next to watch on my skybox... I assume you recommend then John?
Oh 100%. Well, if you're a fan of Wes Anderson anyway, it managed to convert my sisters who HATED Moonrise Kingdom so it might do the trick for non fans too, but for fans it's almost perfect. Plus Ralph Fiennes.
I don't know if I'm a fan of Wes Anderson or not, what else has he done?
Moonrise Kingdom, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited and others which aren't worth mentioning
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 4
SELMA
Selma seemed like it would be a big Oscar player but however it only scored nominations in the best picture category and song category for Glory by John Legend and Common. I saw Selma at the cinema yesterday and I thought it was absolutely fantastic film. Even though I didn't think the first 20 minutes were great, when it hit it's stride after that, it excelled completely. I thought David Oyelewo was very good and Carmen Ejojo was also great such as the rest of the cast. It was also great seeing Oprah on the big screen again. The script was great and it was a very interesting and informative film with great music. I loved Selma and i hope it wins best song as it deserves to win an award tonight.
Fantastic mr fox is my favourite Wes film
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 5
THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
I do really like The Grand Budapest Hotel though I do find it slightly overrated and I think Wild and Gone Girl should have been nominated instead of this. However the script is fantastic, Wes Anderson's direction is great and the acting is very good, especially from Ralph Fiennes and Saioroise Ronan. The film was a gigantic box office success and it received great reviews. It also managed to stay relevant for a long time considering it was released in March. It should win a few Oscars tonight in the costume/make up kind of categories.
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 6
THE IMITATION GAME
The Imitation Game is an absolutely great film and in my view is a typical film that deserves to be nominated for Best Picture but doesn't deserve to win as it is excellent but not the best of the best. I thought the story was very interesting and it was accompanied by a great script. Benedict Cumberbatch is absolutely fantastic as Alan Turing and he deserves to win the Oscar and Keira Knightly was great as usual. I actually think this could win nothing tonight as I don't know what it would win but i am glad it got nominated for a few awards.
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 7
THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING
The Theory Of Everything is good. That's about it. It is nowhere near great and is easily the weakest of the best picture nominees. It shouldn't have been nominated and it is quite sad that this got nominated over the stunning and groundbreaking Wild. The script is quite poor and I found it quite confusing as the time going forward was never really that clearly shown- the complete opposite of fellow nominee Boyhood. However Eddie Redmayne and especially Felicity Jones slay in this giving absolutely amazing performances which both deserve to be nominated and they are fantastic in scenes such as Eddie telling Felicity he is not in love with her anymore and the wind back the clock scene. And it is always great to see the always great Maxine Peake pop up in something
BEST PICTURE NOMINEE 8
WHIPLASH
Moving onto one of the best nominees as we reach the fantastic Whiplash in the last of the best picture spotlights. First of all the music is absolutely incredible and electrifying. The script is amazing and the direction by Damian Chazelle is fantastic for a 1st time full feature director I believe. The characters are compelling and Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons both give absolutely fantastic performances as their characters. The film is very good and the ending is great and there are many spectacular twists and scenes in Whiplash. I hope this manages to pick up a few wins tonight including an 100% win for Simmons
I really hope you have enjoyed these spotlights
Catching the end of my heart will go as titanic is on sky before the red carpet
Titanic is still my favourite ever best picture winner
10 minutes to red carpet!!!!! It's on sky oscars and sky living
Made myself a cup of tea and microwave popcorn and got a bunch of sweets for my first ever oscars, so excited
Anyone else watching the red carpet?
I am, thought dipping in and out as I'm using the wait to crack on with counting up BJSC
I'd love to stay up and watch this live but I've got work early in the morning
Can't wait to see the list of winners when I wake up and will try and watch some highlights in the evening
f*** ME
The presenting team on Sky are ABYSMAL, time to dig out a US feed asap
Alexa Chung loving the Britney dance in boyhood Definitely one of my highlights as well
I will attempt to stay up as long as I can to watch the ceremony, as a film student, I really should take an opportunity to watch this more often!
Rosamund looks INCREDIBLE
1000 times better than what she wore to the GG's
Naomi watts looks great and rosamund pike looks perfect
Still so upset about gone girl getting snubbed
I think had they gone for 10 BP noms then GG would have been up, it really should be in there as is, but thrillers always have a difficult time at The Oscars.
I've not seen foxcatcher but I think Oyelewo should have been nominated over Carrell (and Coltrane over both of them)
Lupita N'Yongo looks stunning
This sky show is starting to get better, Noel Clarke is very good
Julianne Moore looks perfect and Rita Ora also looks good
Reese is looking AMAZING, one of the best outfits of the night for sure. Simple but stunning.
Reese Witherspoon looks so stunning and amazing. Best of the night so far
Hope she still somehow wins

Would have preferred Ethan Hawke but J.K. Simmons was amazing so I don't mind
And sky movies chez
Non shock one of the evening out of the way then
Oh yay, nobodies favourite human being Liam Neeson
Adam Levine
The Keira version was way better
EDIT: That was painful
The grand Budapest hotel has won costume design
2nd award for Budapest Hotel, this time for makeup and hairstyling
Ida had won best foreign language film
Everything is awesome
The phone call wins best live action short
Am I the only person here?
Crisis hotline: veterans press 1 wins best documentary short
The STATE of Viola Davis. That is one ugly dress.
This track
Oscar win 2 for Whiplash for best sound mixing
So glad is won, the sound was amazing
American sniper wins best sound editing
Would have preferred a birdman win but the sound in American sniper was very good though
I couldn't care less about these categories
Patrica Arquette unsurprisingly and deservedly picks up best supporting actress
Rita Ora
Interstellar has won for best visual effects
So happy, they were so amazing
Feast wins best animated short
Another of my favourites winning, such a great short
Big hero 6 wins best animated feature
I'm glad about that, it was my favourite animation last year after the snubbed the book of life
Yay at Big Hero 6.!!!!
Grand Budapest Hotel picks up another award for production design
Birdman wins for cinematography
So happy, that was definitely one of the best parts of Birdman
3rd win for Whiplash tonight for film editing
Would have preferred boyhood or birdman winning but whiplash was great
I love glory so much, hope it can best song
YES AT GLORY WINNING
Such a beautiful and great track
Even happier it beat everything is overrated
I don't like Glory, but that reaction to the perf was insane
Loved that Gaga sound of music tribute
Grand Budapest hotel wins best original score
Really championed the fabulous score of interstellar to win this category
Birdman wins best original screenplay
Starting to get really worried about boyhood's best picture chance
Imitation game wins adapted screenplay
I would have preferred a whiplash win but I am glad the imitation game managed to win something
I thought Inarritu's directing was great but I was really hoping Linklater would win
Interstellar should have won best score. Plumping for Keaton for actor and Boyhood for pic. Obv Julianne for actress.
Eddie Redmayne wins best actor for the theory of everything
In all honesty I actually preferred his Les Miserables performance but I am happy he won even though I preferred Keaton and Cumberbatch
Yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!! So happy to be wrong
They are racing through this now, they are quite a bit behind I guess
Juliane Moore wins for Still Alice
This was inevitable but I really wanted Reese to win
Boyhood to win best picture please
I am so gutted boyhood only won one award, it deserved so much more
Birdman was my 2nd favourite though
So birdman wins best picture, Budapest and whiplash win loads and boyhood disappoints
Thanks so much to everyone who was here tonight (well pretty much just me and Johnkm) and goodnight
Really shocked Boyhood missed both director and picture, was sure it would win one at least
Disappointed that Birdman won picture *and* director, as much as I liked it. Not surprised about it getting best picture where it seemingly became the frontrunner but I just really wish that Boyhood would've won for director.
What makes up for it are the wins for Big Hero 6 ( !!), Glory and Patricia (as predictable as her win was, at least Boyhood got something in one of the major categories).
"Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?"
!!!!
Couldn't fathom out how Richard Linklater didn't get the directing Oscar until I looked at who was distributing - a company I'd never heard of...meanwhile Birdman is distributed by Fox...therefore the votes went that way.
Not shy in being a celebration of the major players, the Oscars, which is why it's ridiculous that the ceremony is still considered the big one.
Gutted 'Birdman' won best picture. Apart from 'American Sniper' its was by far my least favourite
'Boyhood', 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and 'Selma' should have done far better.
My feed was really shit, so I didn't bother staying up, plus I didn't really care for any of the awards that were being given out. I shall catch up though!
Thrilled for Birdman Brilliant film and though Boyhood was as well, I do like a shock victory. Great to see Grand Budapest Hotel getting so many as well. Glory is a worthy winner of soundtrack, Everything is Awesome tho ;(
There wasn't any surprise yesterday. All the winners were big contenders. However, the most disappointing award was "Ida" for me. A boring movie with a meaningless script. The same happened with "The Great Beauty" last year.
SO happy for Julianne, she acted rings around the other nominees with her performance in Still Alice.
I've not seen 'Still Alice' yet, but Rosamund Pike gave one of the best performances by a lead actress in at least 5 years! So, I'm not taking lightly to the comment that JM "acted rings around" very lightly. I'm sure she was very deserving, but I'm doubting she was that far ahead of RP. (Ofc I can't judge properly, but it'll have to be something spectacular if the above statement is to be correct! )
On a personal level I preferred what Pike did in Gone Girl, but then the nature of the film leads to a much more in your face performance which is easier to latch onto. Julianne was such a quiet, intimate portrayal of illness that it totally deserved to win and I completely see why it did, much as it isn't a performance *I* got as much out of.
Julianne FINALLY slaying. It's about time!
Subtitle pretty much sums up my feelings
