After the major success of her debut album "3 Words" and second album "Messy Little Raindrops" the UK's Queen of Pop is now readying her third offering. It is due for release in August, with a songwriters submission deadline of May 1st.

Should be getting a lead single by July!

What with her last album not selling as much as the first, only two singles having been released and her last single 'only' getting to #18 on the charts I am very eager to see what kind of sound they are going to go for this time.

Personally I want them to go with the full on pop 'Fight For This Love', 'Promise This' sound. Her lead singles are always the best thing about her album.

Another thing that is going to be interesting this time round is the fact that a US career has been rumoured such a lot. I wonder if this will have more of an 'American' sound.

Also a Rihanna duet has been confirmed, but not recorded yet as far as we know.

Sounds pretty early for me but apparently it's from a reliable poster !

Exciting much, I wasn't expecting her to drop a third album that early ohmy.gif

EXCITING dance.gif

Could this mean then that, she is after all planning to release in the states before her X Factor launch?

Nicola should release a solo album soon, so even without a Cheryl's album, I don't think a Girls Aloud reunion was on the table for 2011. smile.gif

I have a feeling she's gonna go all dance-pop. I wouldn't be surprised if she did a near-to-rip-off of "On The Floor".

You mean a rip-off of 'La lambada', right?

Posted by: Carlos V Mar 19 2011, 05:25 PM

I doubt this, so the deadline is in May and the album released in August? it doesn't make any sense. A re-release? maybe, a new album? doubt it.

Posted by: Matt Aloud Mar 19 2011, 06:46 PM

Maybe a deluxe MLR with 8 new tracks ala Fame Monster maybe, with a smiliar thing for the US of A depending on the X Factor.

Be the first one I won't be behind the counter to sell cry.gif drama.gif

So you aren't working at HMV anymore?

Posted by: Gary1 Mar 19 2011, 07:16 PM

I would prefer if she took her time and released it late 2011/Early 2012 instead of rush releasing another album for the sake of it and then giving up on it after 2 singles.

Posted by: Liam Toscano Mar 19 2011, 09:08 PM

Ooh exciting! Maybe a bit soon for a whole new album, 3 albums in a bit less than that many years! I'm thinking/hoping MLR re-release, hopefully something like Cannibal/The Fame Monster (ie essentially an EP) instead 3 or 4 tracks like most.

As long as it's anyone but Pitbull! He's got around FAR too much!

it was in the news that Will.i.am is going to REMIX MLR for the USA! smile.gif

Posted by: Hayzayy Jul 19 2011, 07:05 AM

Some hot news !

Far East Movement have confirmed working with will.i.am and Cheryl in the studio, and Lil Wayne is rumoured to be working with her too.

And according to some guy on Twitter, she said her new music will be a fresh start and will reflect better what she feels.

Bring on album 3 ! cheer.gif

Posted by: Gary1 Jul 19 2011, 10:42 AM

Doesn't sound too promising. Will.I.Am's production work has gotten awful. His songs sound so dated and they were the worse tracks on MLR. I can see this being another rush release with little input from her.

Posted by: Cremey Jul 19 2011, 10:46 AM

Cheryl + Lil' Wayne? YES PLEASE.

Posted by: Matt Aloud Jul 22 2011, 11:12 AM

Can we get Rihanna in there with her too please!

Posted by: Silver Rocket Jul 23 2011, 12:43 AM

I can't say this prospect hugely excites me, 3 Words had three decent songs (Fight For This Love, Rain On Me, Stand Up) and Messy Little Raindrops had one (Yeah Yeah).

For such a high profile star, she sure gets loads of awful songs that sound like cheap handed down demos that nobody wanted. I do hope they finally correct this for the third album...

Posted by: Matt Aloud Jul 23 2011, 07:54 PM

3 Words was pretty solid, but I have to agree with MLR. I've never really connected to it very well. I've probably actually played Insatiable more since the dust settled so to speak. How The FLood got a release ahead of Yeah Yeah will forever puzzle me!

Posted by: Jimmie Jul 25 2011, 01:48 PM

I actually preferred MLR I must be one of the only ones then. I thought it was far more consistant and showed some great development in Cheryl's vocals (Haters don't even bother responding to that point sleep.gif) Happy Tears was amazing and should have seen a release.

Posted by: Liаm Jul 25 2011, 02:03 PM

MLR is deffo better, the only song I really dislike is Live Tonight, whereas on 3 Words Heaven and Make Me Cry were both awful. Plus MLR has the amazingness of Promise This, The Flood, Waiting, Yeah Yeah and Happy Tears, do that wins tongue.gif

Posted by: THEO. Jul 25 2011, 02:22 PM

'Messy Little Raindrops' was pretty crap, if I'm being honest. There were about four good songs on it, and I was majorly disappointed at the lack of direction for it. '3 Words' is pretty consistent throughout, with many more highlights.

Well let's erase the past 4 months laugh.gif I left Bauer Media's Cash For Kids (great experience, just didn't work out for me, still love the charity though), and have returned to hmv cheer.gif Bring on Cheryl #3 and Nicola biggrin.gif

The problem with both albums is how they were clearly rushed. "3 Words" moreso, whilst "Messy Little Raindrops" seems like other peoples leftovers.

EXACTLY! I'm so glad someone finally agrees. The majority of them sound so cheap and rush produced, and like other people's leftover demos slightly polished up.

For once I agree with you Mr Negativity. Both albums reek of laziness and Cheryl just singing over somebody's reject demo - especially her second album. Having said that, there are at least five songs on each album I really like, but she is capable of far better (and if she isn't, the team behind her certainly are.)

I feel both albums were recorded in like June, and finished by August. The second album is deffo leftovers.

Posted by: hofverberg Aug 6 2011, 01:43 PM

3 Words was by no means a great album, but was well produced had great singles. Some fillers, but the fillers weren't bad per se.

Messy Little Raindrops on the other hand was a lazy follow up with approx only one very good song (Promise This). Rest sounded like demos, leftovers or were just bland. I connected with some songs (Promise This, The Flood, Yeah Yeah Yeah, Raindrops, Hummingbird) but all the songs except the first two mentioned I can't listen to anymore because they're so outdated already.

I love Cheryl, but her solo albums have been pretty much under expectations! So hopefully the third one will make her credible once again (if she even can become credible again)

Cheryl Cole is set to collaborate with French producer David Guetta as her manager will.i.am attempts to make her a huge star in the US.

Cheryl Cole is set to collaborate with David Guetta.

The British singer wants to become a star in the US so her manager, Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am, has arranged for her to work with the French super producer on new material.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Cheryl will be a top solo star in the US is will.i.am has anything to do with it. The man is so well connected and he sleeps, breathes and eats music.

"He has a studio at home in which he is trying out new sounds for Cheryl. He wants the best and is very picky. David is an old friend and has produced some of the best dance anthems of the past few years, so it's a good place to start."

David - who has created tracks for the likes of Rihanna, Madonna, Snoop Dogg and Blacked Eyed Peas - recently revealed he had made a song he was giving to will.i.am for him to use for one of his artists.

He said: I made a song the other day and it was such a good fit for him and his artists. We're always in touch."

Cheryl has been working on new tracks in Los Angeles, although she has vowed her third studio album won't be released until her team feel it is perfect.

I'm quite intrigued by this, hopefully it's a good song (as David tends to give his best tracks to the ladies; 'Titanium', 'When Love Takes Over'), so if it works, then it will be great! This is the first time I've actually been looking forward to the third album, I seriously hope it doesn't disappoint.

Posted by: Liаm Aug 18 2011, 02:05 PM

Should be great, as Theo said, his best songs are usually given to the ladies so hopefully the same is true for Cheryl!

Posted by: Matt Aloud Aug 18 2011, 04:50 PM

I am glad, as I quite liked '3 Words', although there was a lot of filler and the follow up was lazy and rushed, not a single song that I listen to nowadays. I would like to have a good pop album from Cheryl, as '3 Words' did show some promise, despite it being a bit fillerish. I think she can do it this time, now she isn't rushed off her feet.

Cheryl Cole will return to the public eye with her first music in nearly two years later this month, it has been claimed today.

According to the Daily Star Sunday, Chezza is set to release her first music from her third album in March.

“Cheryl’s almost finished her third album and she’s confident it’s her best by far,” a source blabbed to the newspaper. “She’s just putting the finishing touches to it before a release date is scheduled.

“But the plan is to have a single out by spring, possibly as early as March.”

The record, the third solo release from the Girls Aloud star, will feature work from will.i.am and Taio Cruz.

“She’s really taken her time for this one and feels so positive about the music,” the insider added.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/s154/the-voice-uk/news/a362680/cheryl-cole-to-debut-new-single-on-the-voice.html

Surprise surprise! It was always going to happen when will.i.am was made a coach!

Posted by: pippa Jan 30 2012, 11:58 AM

Cheryl always gets such great promotion and big tv shows which i believe have been the main contribution to her success. I dont think her material is any better than Nicola Roberts or Nadine Coyle but unfortunatly Cheryl has a far better marketing and promotion team behind her which has resulted in her outselling her band members. Her popularity seemed to have wained for her 2nd album and considering she has been out of the press for a while now and no longer has X Factor exposure i do think the 3rd album could possibly sell less than her 2nd.

Posted by: Martyn Jan 30 2012, 12:43 PM

This will be her "come-back" though. Having not released anything since The Flood in January 2011. I think it will be all over everywhere when she releases the first single from the album.

Posted by: pippa Jan 31 2012, 01:54 PM

Will she sustain it though after the lead single? Cheryl managed it very well with the first album but the complete opposite for the second album.

Posted by: Propilot87 Jan 31 2012, 07:05 PM

I think they should have at least tried with a third single, there was no reason not to, Yeah Yeah or Everyone would have probably done better than The Flood. Hopefully they'll do at least 3 singles for this album.

There was a reason she stopped promoting in December, she wasn't ok. One of the producers of Everyone said on twitter Cheryl wasn't in a good mental place (and then he deleted the tweet but fans managed to capture it). I don't think they should have forced her to reappear that soon after she got ill but I guess some people have different priorities and it's money > health

I wasn't aware she was ill, i always just figured they stopped promo for the album because The Flood only got low top 20 and they didn't want to put anything else out and risk it doing worse than The Flood.

According to Dean Piper the producer of her first single is Calvin Harris:

http://deanpiper.com/2012/03/03/cheryl-cole-plans-her-big-comeback-with-a-little-help-from-calvin-harris/

http://www.muumuse.com/2012/03/cheryl-cole-to-return-with-calvis-harris-for-third-album.html/

They're following each other on twitter

Posted by: THEO. Mar 4 2012, 07:53 PM

Hmm, not sure how I feel about that. "We Found Love" is amazing for what the genre that it is, but it felt like the natural next direction for Rihanna. However with Cheryl, even though that sound will feel like a progression for her, it may be a bit too extreme for her 'hardcore' fans, especially as she hasn't released any particularly dancey tracks. Also, it seems Calvin's music is already starting to deteriorate, having heard his new song with Ne-Yo (and of course Tinchy Stryder's awful 'song' released last year).

Posted by: Liаm Mar 5 2012, 12:30 PM

Apparently Cheryl has recorded a 'mid-tempo urban ballad' written by Lana Del Rey which is tipped to be a single biggrin.gif

Cheryl Cole to debut new single on 'The Voice'?

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/s154/the-voice-uk/news/a362680/cheryl-cole-to-debut-new-single-on-the-voice.html

Surprise surprise! It was always going to happen when will.i.am was made a coach!
Comments like this annoy me, no end! Why do people try and make it a bad thing that artists get certain promotional slots? (not just aimed at you april, I see loads of other posters do it too laugh.gif) Whether Will was on the show or not, I'm pretty sure she would have been given a slot. She would bring in the viewers, especially with it being the "rival" show to X Factor, in which she used to judge.

But promotion is promotion and in this day and age where music shows are pretty dead, to get a promotional slot on anything will be a big thing. Also, Will is only doing his job as a manager and getting her these slots, which is what managers are supposed to do aha.

Exactly, what's wrong with using your "relations" to get a promotionnal show on a very commercial show?
Plus she would get a slot on any show in the UK, I don't think she would need will.i.am for that. I'm sure the BBC will be happy with the "The Voice gets to premiere Cheryl's new single instead of X Factor" kind of headlines.

Anyway, I HOPE most of those speculations are true : Calvin, Lana, ... too much great collaborations on this album! It better be true.
Plus I remember Cheryl actually tweeted about "Video games" a long time before it got big in the UK, maybe she was already working with Lana at that time? Who knows...

Posted by: THEO. Mar 5 2012, 04:03 PM

I doubt that's the reason, if so, they are we to expect that she's been working with Gotye as well?

Posted by: Jonjoria Mar 5 2012, 04:13 PM

I have big hopes for the Calvin songs actually. Cheryl has always had that sound and tone to her voice that would perfectly fit a dance/trance track. We heard the potential in 'Waiting' (one of 3 highlights from the last album for me). So I'm looking forward to those songs more.

I think she might leave clues on Twitter. Like the people she follows and such (I don't think she would follow Calvin Harris if she wasn't working with him for example).
Plus Lana is on the same label so it might help as well laugh.gif

Posted by: Jimmie Mar 5 2012, 07:14 PM

I think Cheryl would be perfect for Dance/Club music, she is regularly played on the gay scene nightclubs and its perfect for clubs, still hear 'Promise This' and 'Fight For This Love' quite regularly (Nothing to do with my requests, promise happy.gif ) Plus they have been quite upbeat, I think that is where Cheryl has ben stronger really and she needs to change her sound. She can't just go round releasing the same type music as her previous albums, fans could get bored and we want to see progression from Cheryl!

The press will jump on her for "trendchasing" though. Especially as Tulisa basically had her role on X Factor last year and it will look like Cheryl's trying to copy her younger, newer replacement. Plus between Calvin himself and RiRi I have all the Calvin productions I need right now.

Posted by: Carlos V Mar 25 2012, 02:26 PM

If the song is shit I don't want it in the album but not because of Tulisa but because it's a bad song.

Well after buying 'Messy Little Raindrops' and only liking two tracks, I'd quite like her to come up with a decent album with minimum filler. That is exactly my point. Both of her albums have been patchy so I'm not expecting a lot from this one. If she can produce 12 good tracks and bung on a few shittier ones for the deluxe then that's a step-up from 3 Words and Messy Little Raindrops as far as I'm concerned.

This !

I LOVE this cover ! This is a step in the right direction after MLR !
First time I saw it I was like, WOOOOW SHE DELIVERED ! Then I see she gets many negative comments for the cover, so I don't know, maybe it's just me thinking it looks ACE ! The bright typo, and the fact she's kinda hiding herself from the light with her hand look great considering the album title ("A million lights"). It's like they say "there's no need for the album title on the cover because visually there are many references to it" laugh.gif
I love she's just CHERYL, and the tattoo being featured, they do everything to get "Chezza from the block" back, great.

And I love that we are getting 15 tracks this era (16 if we count "Make you go"), yay !
On her official page, she doesn't mention the featurings in the tracklist (will.i.am isn't mentionned on "Craziest things") ! I do like Wretch 32 so I'd be happy with him featuring on "Screw you"!

Posted by: Slick May 24 2012, 12:07 PM

I've heard people say it looks cheap, which I suppose I cannot really deny, but it is SUCH a huge jump up from her last cover. It's eye-catching, bold, she looks really good and you can already get a sense of the type of music that'll be on it by looking at the cover. I think it's pretty well-designed in that sense.

The trend of terrible album covers continues I see, except this is maybe not quite as bad as the other two...

Posted by: THEO. May 26 2012, 10:27 AM

The Alex da Kid produced track is "Under the Sun"! I'm hoping for excellent things from it, but it may be a bit strange going straight from that into "Call My Name"...

Cheryl's been tweeting some more lyrics:

I'm running temperatures thinking of your love boo.. #ghettobaby

ohmy.gif Looks amazing! If I'd have known about it sooner, I could've preordered a signed edition. Hopefully I'll still get this anyway.

Are the bonus tracks from the deluxe edition on The Soldiers' Edition as well as other songs?

Posted by: Umi Jun 7 2012, 03:20 PM

Oh my God I have to get the Super Deluxe version. It looks AMAZE.

She's done an interview with Popjustice:

http://www.popjustice.com/interviewsandfeatures/cheryl-cole-interview/92541/

FAIRLY GOOD. Got a bit awkward towards the end with some frosty moments but then that always seems to happen with Popjustice interviews. Not too much of interest there but I love that she wanted 25 songs on the album. laugh.gif Thank goodness they talked her out of that.

Posted by: Slick Jun 7 2012, 03:22 PM

I'm not sure what to think after reading that interview. She doesn't really seem into making music as much as she makes out that she is. She doesn't seem THAT involved in the process OR particularly enthusiastic about her solo career. Continually telling people "I didn't write it, don't ask me what it's about" comes across as a bit arsey after the second or third time too. It's a good interview though. Popjustice definitely doesn't back down.

Posted by: Liаm Jun 7 2012, 05:07 PM

I read on Digital Spy yesterday she never wanted a solo career, will.i.am pushed her and it ended up going from there. Doesn't surprise me, as Slick said she doesn't seem massively content with it, I think she's fine with being Nadine and Sarah's back-up and getting a verse now and again on Girls Aloud songs.

I love that interview though, good on them for not just backing down and doing a dull interview where they comply to what she wants.

Posted by: Acoustic Jun 7 2012, 05:32 PM

So there's like 20 tracks with the soldier's edition? YES PLEASE.

I think i'll get the Super Deluxe. smile.gif

Well yes, she basically said that in the PJ interview, which I imagine is where DS got it from.

Posted by: Davidson Jun 7 2012, 06:23 PM

She comes across really badly in that Popjustice interview. She hasn't even bothered to find out what the lyrics of her lead single actually mean before releasing it? Okay Cheryl, okay.

Posted by: Liаm Jun 7 2012, 06:25 PM

It's not even as if she has songs with that much depth to them, surely even if she doesn't seek it out she can easily tell what the song is about so she can respond when they ask her!

Do they mean something? it was said to death by everybody how the Call My Name lyrics didn't have any meaning and that it seemed Calvin just put them there to fit the music.

Why is someone going to be surprised by the confirmation of it?

Do you listen to Girls Aloud songs though? she has always been the second one with more lines and solo bits... more than Sarah, Nicola and Kimberley from Sound Of The Undergroud to Tangled Up and more than Nadine, Nicola and Kimberley in Out Of Control.

Posted by: Liаm Jun 7 2012, 07:40 PM

That interview was good, I thought. It's well known that Popjustice is a prick, so I approve of Cheryl sticking with her answers rather than saying "oh blah blah it actually means ****sleep****" - everyone knows that "Call My Name" is a fun pop song to get her name back in the spotlight, and once it's been a success, she'll release something with more meaning, just like the Messy Little Raindrops campaign with "The Flood" following "Promise This" (although that could be perceived as having some personal meaning).

Posted by: Umi Jun 8 2012, 11:06 PM

CLIPS ARE HERE.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0089ZQDIQ/ref=sr_1_album_2_rd?ie=UTF8&child=B0089ZQDZO&qid=1339194125&sr=1-2

Sound DECENT but not amazing. Eh. Less uptempo than I was expecting even with Cheryl saying it wasn't a dance album in the interview. Ghetto Baby sounds fab! Sexy Den A Mutha isn't bad either so I guess we can relax about the titles now. laugh.gif

Posted by: randomfurlong Jun 8 2012, 11:12 PM

'Sexy Den A Mutha' needs to get in my ears RIGHT NOW. Heartbreak over how that clip teases you with just the first few seconds of the chorus then rudely snatches it away.

'One Thousand' also sounds fantastic. Should be another mixed album from her.

Posted by: Johnny Jun 8 2012, 11:58 PM

'A Million Lights' is already my favourite song of hers just from that clip. I actually felt something just from the 15secs, actually sounds believable!? Her voice sounds decent and the productions great! Something about the vibe/atmosphere. Best live up to the clip! wub.gif

Posted by: Davidson Jun 9 2012, 12:08 AM

I am really liking 'A Million Lights', 'Screw You', 'Sexy Den A Mutha' and 'Mechanics Of The Heart' so far from those clips. Overall though, it doesn't sound that good, which is disappointing as although her first album was only OK and the follow up was diabolical, I thought this could actually have potential to be good as she had much more time on her hands to do it well and put the time in. I have to say though, from the clips, it doesn't sound much worse than '3 Words', just the production sounds piss poor on some of the tracks, for instance 'Boys Lie'. I will try and wait for the full songs before deeming this to only be an OK album yet again, but from the clips, it is pointing that way for me.

Posted by: Carlos V Jun 9 2012, 12:27 AM

I don't really think we can talk about the production until we can listen to HQ versions, I have Telescope in HQ because it was available in my country, not anymore though because iTunes got it wrong and they uploaded the same EP from the UK when they only wanted to upload Call My Name and one remix.

Anyway, my point was that Telescope sounds bad in that clip but the song in HQ sounds really great.

Posted by: Cremey Jun 9 2012, 01:21 AM

Loving the clips...it all sounds so much more polished than 'Messy Little Raindrops' which is definitely not a bad thing.
Whereas that album seemed really sloppily put together, it seems like a lot more care has been put into this one to make it feel more like an rather than simply 15 songs after one another. She said that in the popjustice interview but I wasn't sure if it would actually be the case!

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 9 2012, 01:47 AM

Is it me or do the clips sound like she's bored/can't be bothered? They just seem lifeless to me. The production is a step in the right direction though. I just can't get past that she sounds bored on majority of the tracks (bar 'A Million Lights' - where I agree, she sounds so sincere and it's lovely from the clip) I'll still listen to this with an open mind though, as it's a Cheryl album. But I'm not expecting the full album to be too much better. (Hopefully it is though)

Isn't that a feature of Cheryl's voice, it's her tone of voice and it has always been like that... an example:

Girls Aloud (Cheryl) - Crazy Fool

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRdHOEJPObU

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 9 2012, 02:05 AM

No it's not her tone. I love her tone (I've always said this). She hasn't sounded quite as bored on the previous two albums for example. She actually sounds like she wanted to make those albums and was into them. But I dunno. Maybe it's the production of the album which doesn't compliment her voice as much? I dunno. But something's lacking by those clips. (But that's all they are, clips so hopefully the full thing will be better)

Posted by: Carlos V Jun 9 2012, 02:47 AM

I feel completely the opposite, especially compared to MLR, album she has even said she really wasn't into it...

No it's not?! What's well known is that he asks some challenging questions rather than letting his subjects spout a load of PR he could just as easily get from a press release. His interviews are usually a pretty good indicator of which popstars have a sense of humour and which don't.

Album sounds like a mixed bag, as ever with Chezza. Under The Sun, Love Killer and Telescope sound great. Craziest Things, Ghetto Baby, Sexy Den a Mutha not so much.

Posted by: AltheGreat Jun 9 2012, 11:16 AM

Mechanics of the Heart sounds beautiful - what Happy Tears should've been.

Boys Lie sounds horrible though! laugh.gif

Posted by: Liаm Jun 9 2012, 02:21 PM

Mechanics Of The Heart, Ghetto Baby, A Million Lights, Telescope and especially Screw You all sound really good! A bit disappointed on the whole though, she sounds bored on some tracks as Jonjo said and I'm not a massive fan of how much dubstep lite there appears to be going on...

Posted by: BrookeOlivia Jun 9 2012, 02:23 PM

Posted by: Davidson Jun 10 2012, 12:47 AM

She apparently claimed at the Summertime Ball today that either 'Under The Sun' or 'Screw You' will be the second single from the album. I am hoping for 'Screw You' as its probably my favourite of the clips.

The Soldier CD will have 9 tracks, so I guess the bonus tracks from the Deluxe edition will be put on it, with a few more.

The 9 track CD, as Hayzayy says, presumably the 4 bonus tracks from the Deluxe are included on it. There's an exclusive track called 'Teddy Bear' confirmed as well. The remaining 4 tracks are still a mystery!

No offence Theo, but I will never get this loon mentality. I'm never like it with Nicki or Rihanna - I just don't understand why someone would buy something without knowing what it's like first but each to their own.

'Screw You' sounds fantastic although I think the chorus could've had a little more oomph personally. Still by far her best era yet, the first two were pretty disastrous really, but this feels like this is the kind of music she should've been making all along.

Well I personally see it as less incentive to buy an album if you've already heard/downloaded half of the tracks from it! I've done it for other artists' albums in the past, and then it just feels like a letdown when you've already heard the best tracks (Pink Friday Roman Reloaded is a prime example of that, for me).

Oh. I do it all the time for a Kelly C, Britney and The Killers releases. (I'll be doing it with Nicki's next album now too). laugh.gif There's just something more satisfying about having not heard your favourite artists album, before you've actually brought it. Makes an album even more special to me, personally. I dunno. It's hard to explain the feeling but it's a pretty nice feeling. Screw You is RATHER amazing. I had no idea it featured Wretch, somehow. Dunno if it would make a good single but yeah I love it.

I like this "premiering album songs" tactic - it'll certainly make more people aware that she has an album coming out. Actually feels like there's a buzz about it, outside of the usual fans & loons on Twitter/forums!

On the Soldiers CD, there is :
- Boys lie
- One thousand
- Telescope
- Last one standing
- I like it
- Make you go
- Dum dum
- Teddy bear

Which makes it 8 tracks. There is one missing or it's a video or something.

Listened to the majority of the main tracks... On first impression, it's without a shadow of a doubt her best album by a mile. You can tell she's worked on it over time as opposed to a 2 week recording session like the first 2.

Out of everything I've heard I'm still not convinced by Cheryl Cole as a solo artist at all. Apart from "Call My Name" and "Fight For This Love" I really don't feel there's anything else she's done that no-one else could do (and miles better at that I may add). But there's always demand for her and being that pretty / having so much of a media presence will only really help her shift the units - but yeah, she can't sing (and that's proven by the loons in here even going "she actually sounds quite good here!!") She's supposed to be good nearly all of the time children.

To be fair though, when have we heard Britney sing live recently? It doesn't stop her releasing music and forging a career for herself, which for the most part has been incredibly successful. There's a whole host of artists nowadays that are successful that don't have the best singing voices, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna even...

As for the first bit, I don't think I've heard anything in the past few years that I don't think somebody else could've executed better, it's all about material that suits, and certainly listening to this album it seems like she's found that.

As Cheryl said herself recently, she knows she's no Mariah or Whitney - nor has she ever claimed to be. She's a performer, there's nothing wrong with that!

Posted by: Kelly Jun 15 2012, 01:50 AM

Jeez, the more I listened the more I'm REALLY surprised at how good a Cheryl album is. laugh.gif I've always been a fan (obvs, I'm a geordie lass!) but always been really underwhelmed by her solo albums. Last One Standing is spectac. I hear it's a bonus track!?!

Posted by: J-o-e Jun 15 2012, 06:34 AM

Im shocked that I actually like this album, not to sound like a hater but her first two albums were complete garbage...IMO. UTS and AML are my favourites so far!

All of the people mentioned re: singing all have a gimmick and a distinctive voice which sets them all apart, they all sing songs that suit them and they have a strong personality whereas Cheryl gets hand-me-downs rejected by other artists and sings them with a delivery that even when layered is still a bit uncomfortable. I do understand that Cheryl is a performer but the only reason she got a career in the first place was because she was famous beforehand, not for her own vocals but for vocals with 4 other girls so they all helped each other out. The rest were famous from the get go because they wrote their own songs and/or had a distinctive style whereas Cheryl is just a bit... bland? There's nothing setting her apart aside from her looks.

clips don't give that much of an insight though, because I love it!

Posted by: AdamAloud Jun 16 2012, 01:46 PM

Fantastic album and it works really well as an album, unlike 'Messy Little Raindrops' which had such a mish-mash of styles. Favourites are 'Call My Name' and 'Love Killer'.

Posted by: Acoustic Jun 16 2012, 01:51 PM

'Ghetto Baby' is amazing.

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 16 2012, 03:02 PM

This album is really good. She's progressed so much as a solo artist, especially after feeling like she took a huge step back with 'Messy Little Raindrops'. I'm not sure I love the highlights as much as my favourites from the '3 Words' album, but I'm definitely preferring it as a whole. Quite surprised actually. The clips really don't do it justice. 'Under The Sun' is, indeed growing on me. But I'd still prefer 'Screw You' as a single over it. But it's a grower for sure. 'Telescope' is seriously beautiful!

First listen rate:

08.0 'Under The Sun'
10.0 'Call My Name'
06.5 'Craziest Things' (feat. Will.I.Am.)
07.5 'Girl In The Mirror'
09.0 'A Million Lights'
10.0 'Screw You' (feat. Wretch 32)
08.0 'Love Killer'
06.5 'Ghetto Baby'
07.0 'Sexy Den A Mutha'
07.5 'Mechanics Of the Heart'
06.0 'All Is Fair'
06.5 'Last One Standing'
05.5 'Boys Lie'
06.0 'One Thousand'
10.0 'Telescope'

I can see many of these growing on me.

Posted by: Davidson Jun 16 2012, 03:24 PM

I am very impressed actually with this effort from Cheryl actually. Overall the album feels like it flows very well and although some of the songs still seems like 'will this do?' type songs and I feel she has used the waterdowned dubstep a little too much in some tracks, most of them are actually very impressive and very well produced. This is clearly better than the alright '3 Words' and the poor 'Messy Little Raindrops'. She has shown some good progression here.

8.0 Under The Sun
8.5 Call My Name
7.0 Craziest Things (ft Will.I.Am)
7.5 Girl In The Mirror
9.5 A Million Lights
9.0 Screw You
7.0 Love Killer
6.5 Ghetto Baby
8.5 Sexy Den A Mutha
9.0 Mechanics Of The Heart
8.0 All Is Fair
6.5 Last One Standing
5.0 Boys Lie
7.5 One Thousand
7.0 Telescope

Overall, its a 7/10 album but has potential to become a 8/10 effort. Good work Chezza.

Posted by: Neil Jun 16 2012, 03:30 PM

Cheryl's voice is beyond weak on this album. However, the songs are good enough that it doesn't distract.

Strong enough album, Im shocked more people don't love Mechanics Of The Heart, it better be the third single its my favorite Cheryl song ever. No suprise that the weakest song on the album had involvement from Will.I.Am.

6 'Girl In The Mirror'
8 'A Million Lights'

I do. It along with the title track are by far and away the best things on the album. Her voice actually suits mid-tempo numbers like them and the melodies are so strong. I can see both of them being my favourite solo Cheryl songs ever along with '3 Words'..

My ratings of the "Soldier" edition tracks:

08.0 'Teddy Bear' [This is lovely. Her voice is beautiful on this!]
07.0 'I Like It' [This song feels like there should be a hook in there, but it doesn't quite have one. It's rather strange. Production wise though, reminds me of something from Britney's 'In The Zone' era!]
07.0 'Dum, Dum' [It's decent enough I guess. Very European in the sound. Reminds me of Hadise's stuff. Good, but I can see why it was "only" on the special edition of the album.]

Posted by: Lukuzz Jun 17 2012, 09:25 AM

My ratings -

8 Under The Sun
10 Call My Name
6 Craziest Things
8 Girl In The Mirror
8.5 A Million Lights
11 Screw You - OBSESSED with this heart.gif
10 Love Killer
9.5 Ghetto Baby
9 Sexy Den a Mutha
8.5 Mechanics Of The Heart
8 All Is Fair
8 Boys Lie
7.5 One Thousand
10 Telescope
7 Last One Standing
7 I Like It
9 Make You Go
8 Dum Dum
8 Teddy Bear

Nothing less than a 6, by FAR her best album to date!

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 17 2012, 09:32 AM

I'm finding 'Love Killer', 'Ghetto Baby' (it's obvious it's a Lana Del Rey song - That's not why I like it either, as I'm sure a lot of you will know I have no time for her laugh.gif) and 'Mechanics Of The Heart' to be the biggest growers for me.

Also: MOTH is reminding me of 'Fly' in the production in some places.

Posted by: Davidson Jun 17 2012, 10:32 AM

The beginning couple of seconds of 'Boys Lie' reminds me so much of the opening to 'Girl Overboard' by Girls Aloud on the Tangled Up album. Shame the rest of the song doesn't live up to that.

Posted by: dannjohn3 Jun 17 2012, 10:42 AM

08 Under The Sun
09 Call My Name
07 Craziest Things (Feat. will.i.am)
09 Girl In The Mirror
07 A Million Lights
06 Screw You (Feat. Wretch 32)
07 Love Killer
09 Ghetto Baby
08 Sexy Den A Mother
10 Mechanics Of A Heart
06 All Is Fair
07 Last One Standing
07 Boys Lie
08 One Thousand
09 Telescope
05 I Like It
06 Make You Go
07 Dum Dum
06 Teddy Bear

I can see why certain tracks are bonus ones. Not overly keen on Screw You. Hope it's not a single anytime soon.

It's almost like you want her not to be #1! tongue.gif Very pessimistic. I don't really see why her album should falter, coming off the back of the fastest selling single of the year so far.

Justin Bieber doesn't have the same kind of impact here as he does in the US and Canada. Case in point, his Christmas album reached #1 in those territories, but #13 here. His 'Boyfriend' single hasn't sold much more than 180,000 in total here so far. I don't doubt that his new album will do well here, but on paper it should be a Cheryl victory. She has a considerably more successful hit single, and has far more press coverage & hype. Great promotion too.

I shall get the best indication today when I put loads of Cheryl through the till and the odd Bieber.

Don't forget Cheryl has 2 signings as well.

Posted by: billy. Jun 18 2012, 10:13 AM

This album is easily her best! I loved 3 Words, but this is way more coherent, has a sound running through it and doesn't just sound like thirteen b-side/demos chucked on a disc, I'm a happy fan right now <3

Teddy Bear is way underrated though, should have been on the main disc cause it's beautiful. Hope, by some crazy miracle, she performs it on tour.

I am really loving this album, especially after 2nd and 3rd listens. It's so much stronger than her previous two - the production particularly has improved heaps which I guess is expected when you branch out a bit. Highlights for me are 'Under The Sun', 'Screw You' and 'Sexy Den A Mutha'.

His debut had sold 569k to the end of 2010 so it'll easily be over 600k now. I do still think he's a real threat but I'm leaning more towards Cheryl now than I was about a week ago.

Will give Cheryl's album a full listen later but everything I've heard so far sounds good and a lot better than her previous efforts.

I'm being realistic, unless I am not reading right the information their websites are giving us.

Amazon and Play are big stores, she's only charting #15 and #19, when Bieber is #6 in both charts. She's charting really low...

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 18 2012, 12:48 PM

No doubt in my mind that Cheryl will be number 1 with at LEAST 70k.

Posted by: -Jay- Jun 18 2012, 01:19 PM

^^ The Amazon/Play etc charts don't tend to reflect the eventual midweeks/Sunday chart very accurately.

For instance, Alexandra Burke's 'Heartbreak On Hold' was #88 on Amazon, on her first day of sale (more accurately, Monday at 3:33pm - I found a post I made stating this). She actually charted at #18 on the Sunday.

If anything, it's iTunes that tends to reflect what will end up occurring in the album charts.

#1 A Million Lights (Deluxe)
#2 Believe (Deluxe)
#6 A Million Lights (Standard)
#22 Believe (Standard)

Posted by: THEO. Jun 18 2012, 01:48 PM

Cheryl will be #1 - the Soldiers' boxset will presumably be added to sales figures, and I'm sure she has enough fans to buy that and at least one other version. Justin's début My Worlds has now sold 700k compared to 3 Words' 990k. I know they're different artists, but then you see that his fanbase couldn't even get his Christmas album top ten, whilst Cheryl's fanbase gave her another almost 500k of Messy Little Raindrops.

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 18 2012, 01:53 PM

Are you sure that amazon add the pre orders to their current chart that they display on the website? Bieber was at number 6 on thier charts last night and Cheryl had a similar position last night to what she started on this morning. If pre orders were added surely they both would have risen? From that I would guess that they do not operate their chart in the same way that itunes does by adding the pre orders together on the release day. This would also make sense with the way that they state how may days that each album has been in the top 100. I could be wrong but i really don't get the impression that their positions at the moment include the pre orders (especially with amazon quoting that Cheryl was selling close to double in pre orders)

Yep. Believe it or not, the physical market for albums is still quite a bit ahead of digital downloads. So I can see Cheryl walking it.

Posted by: J-o-e Jun 19 2012, 09:22 AM

I never even considered that Cheryl wouldn't get the top spot with her album :/. Where did bieber fever come from over here, still no number 1 single, Boyfriends chart run was nothing too impressive. I really hope she managed to get #1 by Sunday...and if she doesn't it will be yet another testament towards England's awful music taste.

#2 in the midweeks - I'll hold my hands up and admit I was wrong with my over confidence. However it's still early days, and it's not over until Sunday! I still have faith. happy.gif

Aren't physicals still the bigger seller for albums??

Anyway I'm on the frontline so I know what is happening on the physical front tongue.gif I'd have to say Cheryl nipped it today where I work, (excluding my 2 copies), so if you multiply that by 200 odd, and the fact Newcastle will sell tons more Cheryl because of the signing and location, I still have optimism on my side!

And oh yeah! My super deluxe arrived today biggrin.gif

You may be in the wrong frontline laugh.gif since Justin Bieber is selling more physical copies than Cheryl.

One question, do you know if the charts published by HMV, Amazon, Play are about people purchasing online or throughout all the stores + online?

Posted by: Tommy Jun 19 2012, 01:28 PM

Some guy wrote on some site that Cheryl sold 137 k copies of her album, and other guy on that site wrote that Cheryl is #2, so I think we should all chill down and wait for more reliable sources.

Wtf?

Nobody wrote she sold 137k, that was a PREDICTION from someone. Reality is that she's #2 behind Bieber by 3,500 copies.

Why can you not accept it?

Posted by: brit brit fan Jun 19 2012, 06:24 PM

A million lights the song and all is fair are both stunning, great improvement on her ballads on this album. The start of one thousand sounds so much like beyonces run the world when I listen to the chorus of that song all I can imagine is Cheryl doing the weird twitchy chicken dance beyonce does at the start of the video smile.gif

Posted by: sajjadali Jun 19 2012, 07:51 PM

Cheryl had a mega signing today at Newcastle right...even if all those people did not get to go the signing i persume some ended up buying the album anyway...
itunes will push her over 10k for day one. i think mids tommorrow will show her at 18k-22k at number 2 with bieber at 24-28k. He's beating her on all online sites right now. BLAME TEENAGE GIRLS they are insane, they have made 1D insanely huge and let The wanted and JLS get away with releasing substandard music still going to number 1. It's the teenage girls that have done this again.

9k for her for day one ain't great.
By a general estimate you always do MAXIMUM four times the tuesday figure...
so last week she sold 40k day one, so 4x40 = 160k, so she did 152k

She won't be able to push more than 40k this week...with 9k day one.

Oh why didn't she just release later in the year like September and the aloud and Cheryl record could have sold together.
I know the reunion but this is awful sales for her...

Bieber....go away! this is not the states - this is just another market to him, to cheryl and fans this is home. I hope he doesn't get it.
the album market is so awful right now, probably better to sell a few weeks later.

I don't think the 11.99 deluxe thing is helping her, people see that and go i'll buy it when it's reduced. they where probably banking on mega fans buying it three times but it was poor choice i've thought it since also it makes her album seem less good with more filler added in. her standard album is much better.
People dont look arounf for the 8.99 version or presume there isn't one and voila she's lost a sale.

She'd be lucky to do 50k in the week she'll do 40 summit i think. Not great for cheryl...
I want another number 1 album!

Posted by: AaronTM Jun 19 2012, 08:17 PM

I thought Cheryl's last two albums were good, but after listening to this a few times it's like a different league. I don't think the album is as "hit packed" as the other two (though it still has enough options), but I'm so pleased she seems to have found herself as a solo artist here. This dubstep-tinged urban angry Cheryl is the sort of artist I wanted her to be as soon as I heard she was doing a solo album. Even the ballads are a lot more listenable on this album.

My favourites are "Love Killer", "Screw You", "Girl In The Mirror" (she reminds me of Katy B on this one) and obviously "Call My Name". "Sexy Den A Mutha" is also a lot better than the title suggests. The production on this album is a lot more imaginative and interesting, it has a cohesive sound. I can't wait to see her on tour!

I don't suppose anyone could point me in the direction of the Super Deluxe tracks?

Cheryl is #1 in HMV, Tesco and Asda... the problem is that she's only top 20 in Play.com and Amazon.uk

If the album can be around for long then it's better than a good first week and falling like it happened to MLR. We'll see what has happened in 2-3 months.

blink.gif I have no idea why you can't accept FACT that some data are missing.

And based on this:

Jun 18 2012, 09:58 AM
1. Cheryl Cole - A Million Lights (Deluxe)
6. Justin Bieber - Believe (Deluxe)
10. Cheryl Cole - A Million Lights
28. Carrie Underwood - Blown Away
79. Carrie Underwood - Blown Away (Deluxe)

No sign of the regular edition of Believe in the top 100.

It's hard to believe that Bieber sold more than Cheryl on Itunes.

It's really not the end of the world if Cheryl doesn't make #1 you know. To have a third solo album go Top 2 would be almost as amazing (although I do admit that her best album so far missing out when the previous two didn't would be frustrating, but it's not the be all and end all.) People should just be happy that her third era is looking like it's going to be a success when these things are never guaranteed.

I absolutely agree with you

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 20 2012, 01:11 PM

I agree. I get the feeling it'll peak later in the year too. I do think it'll go to number 1 at some point. Whether it'll be the slowest sales week of the year, so be it.

Posted by: Casey__ Jun 20 2012, 03:50 PM

Certainly a more cohesive album than '3 Words' and 'Messy Little Raindrops'. I definitely still think '3 Words' has more higher highs (hello '3 Words' and 'Parachute') wub.gif! But this album does have a few gems, those being 'Girl In The Mirror', 'Ghetto Baby', 'All Is Fair' (mostly for the backing), 'Last One Standing' and obviously 'Call My Name'.

Do people seriously love 'Under The Sun', I find it pretty dreadful, certainly shouldn't be the second single. 'A Million Lights' is TERRIBLE too.

Gave it a couple of listens now:

09 - Under The Sun
08 - Call My Name
07 - Craziest Things
09 - Girl In The Mirror
09 - A Million Lights
10 - Screw You
07 - Love Killer
09 - Ghetto Baby
07 - Sexy Den A Mutha
10 - Mechanics Of The Heart
11 - All Is Fair
10 - Last One Standing
04 - Boys Lie
06 - One Thousand
07- Telescope
05 - I Like It
08 - Make You Go
08 - Dum Dum
10 - Teddy Bear

SO MANY TENS <3 I seriously love this, as an actual album aswell, not just a Cheryl Cole album. There are a few duds, but altogether it's easily her best work IMO, proper love it!

Posted by: AaronTM Jun 21 2012, 07:24 PM

My album ranking so far:

01. Screw You
02. Love Killer
03. Girl In The Mirror
04. Call My Name
05. Sexy Den A Mutha
06. Craziest Things
07. Boys Lie
08. Under The Sun
09. All Is Fair
10. A Million Lights
11. Mechanics Of The Heart
12. One Thousand
13. Ghetto Baby
14. Last One Standing
15. Telescope

Very strong. I'd say even "Telescope" is a 6.5/10 moment. I'm glad she's released a properly good album instead of a mixed bag of tracks. If anyone's got the other four tracks, they'd be much appreciated. happy.gif

Posted by: AaronTM Jun 21 2012, 07:54 PM

Posted by: -Jay- Jun 21 2012, 07:57 PM

I prefer 'I Like It', 'Make You Go' and 'Teddy Bear' to quite a few songs on the standard tbh! 'Dum Dum' is the only weak link from the super deluxe.

I think "I Like It" was the best, the only one that I could see with the main album, but they all have a feel of rejection to them. They don't sound like they belong on this album, the production is a lot weaker. I remember her tweeting "put the bass in my face" a while ago actually, so I'd imagine they weredefinitely songs that didn't fit in on the album. Perhaps they'll grow though.

Being in the Girls Aloud forum does not mean that people can't see it. We need to err on the side of caution in relation to posting/ tweeting/ etc sensitive chart information before it is in the "public domain" i.e before 7pm. Some don't want to see it but regardless of that even artists should not be posting the info before it is unveiled but that's a matter way beyond this forum. Spoiler tags merely highlight people's curiosity and posting "chart spoiler position" or some such above the spoiler isn't really hiding it- more highlighting it don't you think?

I hope this explains why we have this approach.

If I could just say that a poster Tommy posted the original spoiler sometime after 1pm and I believe that this forum's approach to spoilers has always been consistant (in relation to chart positions) so I requested Theo to remove the spoiler which he did and put a comment on to ask for no spoilers. Even if Lee was not present at the time of the original spoiler he certainly saw Theo's comment and decided that he would post a spoiler AGAIN knowing that the previous spoiler had been removed by the request of the forum mod.

He certainly wasn't ganged up on I assure you, but Lee knows the position on this and has been guilty of posting spoilers before and been talked to in connection with it so this was not a first offense.

Hope this helps by way of explanation.

We have always had the policy of not revealing chart positions before R1 announces them on Sundays, this is nothing new. We go about it most weeks so I would hope it wouldn't be a surprise.

I thought it was just standard procedure. Someone goes into relevant artists thread and posts (in a spoiler) the position and sales. Nothing gets said. (Well I haven't seen it). I knew about the "not posting before Radio 1" rule but I just thought that was in the Sunday Chart Show thread. (Which is understandable)

Is should be the whole site! I will have to keep my beady eye out more clearly.

There is a difference between spoilers for a TV show and revealing classified information before it's in the public domain (which is what all chart data is...) The fact of the matter is that NONE of that information should be published anywhere before Radio 1 release it first. If we are seen to be releasing this information early (anywhere on the site), then that's not good for our reputation and could have serious consequences along the line. That would be why using spoiler tags is totally pointless with regard to this situation.

ANYWAY, Cheryl being #2 is pleasing. It's obviously not as pleasing as it would've been if she were #1, but a third Top 2 album is an amazing achievement. I hope it's a consistent seller.

Don't highlight the spoiler then?

I didn't, but if I were to edit the comment to remove the emoticon, I would've seen the content regardless.

A disappointing opening for the album, but I'm hoping it'll be a consistent seller alike 3 Words, and possibly even grab a week at #1 during the summer lull.

Posted by: Jonjoria Jun 25 2012, 04:48 PM

I get that it's "classified information" and stuff I just don't get why it's all of a sudden just come to managements attention? It's definitely been done in the past (on more than one occasion and the only place I have seen action being taken is within the Sunday Chart show thread) and I'm sure the posters involved thought it'd be OK because in the past it has been in spoilers and not been acted upon. I don't think anybody's ever reported it to management because they weren't sure themselves, maybe? I personally haven't reported it before because I'd seen it done before and people discussing the position and sales and stuff, so I didn't think it was a problem and thought it was OK because it was in spoiler tags.

But I now know that if it was to happen in a forum where I'm modding, then I'll remove it and give a quick edit to that post and let people know the proper rules. So I'll definitely try my bit now. But I'm sorry if this was blown out of proportion, I was just confused as to why it'd been allowed in the past but not now. laugh.gif

That's what I was about to say, 2 for 15 pounds, that's 7,50 pounds each, not much of a bargain.

Anayway, it better maintain its position in the top10, this album is too good to sell anything less than 400k.

I hope this GA reunion doesn't get in the way of Cheryl releasing more than 2 or 3 singles for this era. Mechanics needs to be released.

Posted by: -Jay- Jul 4 2012, 12:10 PM

As far as I'm concerned, this era can finish at the end of her tour & then HELLO GIRLS ALOUD, WELCOME BACK.

I think it's clear the label are only intending on 'Under The Sun' & 'Screw You' being singles.

Posted by: Jonjoria Jul 7 2012, 11:37 PM

WOAH. These past couple of days (since I bought it actually!) 'Ghetto Baby' has grown on me, immensely! It is so, so, so good! I'm not even a Lana Del Rey fan, but although the structure is very LDR, the production is very Cheryl 'A Million Lights' and makes it sound amazing, imo. I love it when a song just unexpectedly grows on you like that!

Posted by: Carlos V Jul 8 2012, 10:00 AM

I don't understand her, why she isn't promoting. Why does she disappears when she has music out? 1 month without a performance, an interview... just before her new single and album were released.

I don't get it.

Posted by: -Jay- Jul 8 2012, 11:04 AM

There was promo into the album week! A lot of UK artists don't really do anything major between week 1 of their album and the lead up to the next single. I doubt we'll see her do anything else until August.

What promo? she did 2 signings of 500 people each one. That's all.

I see Rita Ora still doing promo even if she doesn't even have an album out soon, I see Paloma Faith still promoting the album, I remember Emeli Sandé promoting it between singles, same with Ed Sheeran... no festivals, no interviews, no performances. You can't sell your music without showing it to the buying public.

It's her choice though, she prefers to be at home. She's a bad popstar.

Posted by: -Jay- Jul 8 2012, 11:11 AM

T4 performance, mainly! That was a good slot - not a lot of pop acts release an album having the opportunity to perform two album tracks. There was also G-A-Y, the album signing. The single being at #1 was great promo in itself, with the song very high on TV & Radio. She had interviews in print too. The exposure was definitely there.

T4 performance at 9:30 a.m on a Saturday is a good slot? I don't know you but my friends and I are usually sleep at that time... it would have been better to perform and be interviewed on daily shows like This Morning, Daybreak etc.

What promotion is performing at G-A-Y? performing in front of 500 people?

Having a #1 single the week before the album already did it's job, that's why she was #2 the week of release... the problem is how to mantain the album when she's nowhere to be seen, ffs, you're a GA fan, you know how they promoted... even when 3 Words was released Cheryl did different interviews during the following weeks. Even Bieber pre-recorded a couple of interviews for the week of release.

Posted by: -Jay- Jul 8 2012, 09:57 PM

To be quite honest, I'm not as incensed about it as you are. tongue.gif At the end of the day if Cheryl's comfortable doing seemingly little towards promoting her album, then that's her look out & her team's, really. You & I did our parts by buying it, so there's no point in us arguing about it imo. My overall view is that her promotion was reasonably satisfactory.

The interviews thing is kind of a problem though. She hasn't wanted to talk about her personal life, and she has very little to say about her own music too. That pretty much leaves her with nothing interesting to talk about - evidence being that she reels off the same thing in all the magazine interviews, and all the journalists make comments that basically imply she is quite difficult. I think a stumbling block with Cheryl is that she's losing her connection with the public.

Posted by: Slick Jul 8 2012, 10:03 PM

Cheryl has done more promotion so far this era than she did in the entirety of the last era, and probably the one before that too. I always criticized her for being more preoccupied with X Factor than with playing the part of the popstar, but I think she's definitely delivering so far this time.

Posted by: THEO. Jul 8 2012, 10:06 PM

Well I heard that she's due to release a "reveal-all" autobiography in the autumn, so we'll hear her view on her personal life there if so. I do agree that it was annoying when she brushed over Graham Norton's single question about it though.

That's true, she needs to change that pathetic attitude. I guess she knows the reasons why those 16 songs made the album and what she feels when she sings them.

I don't agree with this, yes she did more promo than with MLR but she has not done more than with 3 Words, plus she didn't stop working from October 2009 to June 2010, promo in the UK, international promo and a tour.

Pffft! sad.gif I found it to be the ultimate grower for me. For me I'd rank it...

08.5 'Under The Sun'
10.0 'Call My Name'
07.0 'Craziest Things' (feat. Will.I.Am.)
07.0 'Girl In the Mirror'
10.0 'A Million Lights'
09.0 'Screw You' (feat. Wretch 32)

08.5 'Mechanics Of the Heart'
07.0 'All Is Fair'
07.0 'Last One Standing'
04.5 'Boys Lie'
06.0 'One Thousand'
08.0 'Telescope'
07.0 'I Like It'
05.5 'Make You Go'
03.5 'Dum Dum'
09.0 'Teddy Bear'

A pretty solid album. Such an improvement on her previous material. All the ballads are stronger than majority of the ballads she's already released from other albums. 'A Million Lights' is one of my favourite Cheryl songs. It's stunning and her vocal and tone are perfect for it. Majority of the bonus tracks are very worthy of being just them.

"Under the Sun" surprised me with how good it was for some reason, mainly because I expected to prefer "Screw You", although I was still looking forward to hearing both of them.

The ballads aren't as strong as the rest of the album, but are a nice break after every few songs.

"Last One Standing" is the best song from the deluxe editions, but I'm not sure it would've fit into either section (tracks 1-6 make the first; 7-9 the second and 10-11 don't really fit into either or with one another, but they do with the deluxe tracks, weirdly).

A very strong album overall, with many highs and a nice range of genres/sounds.

As would anyone releasing every year around xmas time. She released in the summer - the lowest time of year for album sales so it's hardly a shock to see this album is selling less than her previous two.

I didn't say it was a shock to see it selling less, I said it was a shock to see it selling THIS MUCH LESS. It's almost as if her previous album sales would have been next to nothing if released in Summer, which for one of our most successful female artists is a worry.

We have to remember she's dropped one single and done NO promo for the album.

Posted by: Aphrodite Jul 16 2012, 01:22 AM

I thought the low sales climate would benefit her chart run but even that hasnt happened. Its a strange outcome so far, the lead single has done very well, the album has got great reviews, she is a big name, her previous albums have done well whereas this album is out a month and hasnt managed 100,000 yet. Albums are so hard to call these days, the 2nd single needs to do reasonably well for her as if it does the album will pick up again but if the singles go like her last album, this album will be very lucky to do 200,000.

Summer is a hard release, Kylie;s aphrodite was released in or around the same time, granted it opened on much higher sales than cheryl but for me it seemed forever to reach platnum, plus releasing in the summer you dont get much of a x mas sales boost as by the time x mas comes round summer albums in general are forgotten and i think a million light will see the same pattern as kylies aphrodite but may not reach platnum. Also just look at how mdna has gone for Madoona, its out near 3 months and hasnt managed 150,000 yet, as i said unless the artists promote like hell and manage a few big hits single the albums just lose momentum so quick. Rihanna is an artist who knows how to do this so well and she managed to sell albums, on saying that she works too hard i think plus has become far far too over exposed which is off putting

Im not Cheryls biggest fan but im looking at her album from the fairest point of view i can.

Heat magazine got it wrong and wrote a stupid article about her performing on The Voice USA when she was sound checking for that gig in Denmark.

I really don't know why I dislike 'Parachute' as much as I do. I genuinely can't bring myself to listen to it. But FFTL will always be the greatest thing she's ever done for me. Not only is it one of her best songs (GA stuff included!) But it's a modern pop masterpiece in my eyes. Flawless pop song, which seems to have aged very well.

The first two are absolutely AMAZING. Call My Name just had to be first, it had me hooked for ages, but FFTL isn't too far behind. The next two are great, Under The Sun is good, Promise This is OK and 3 Words is just dire.

Parachute hate? It's her only song that I'd still listen to out of choice.

1. Fight For This Love (a total bonafide pop classic, deserves its success thoroughly)

2. Call My Name

3. Under The Sun

(Average)
4. Parachute

(Really bad)
5. The Flood (a song about incontinence, really Cheryl?)

(Totally unlistenable)
6. Promise This sick2.gif sick2.gif

Though that's not to say I hate 'The Flood' because it's last. I really like (or love) every single she's done so far.

'3 Words' is absolutely amazing 10/10 moment. CMN and Para are rather amazing too (9/10) and I've grown so fond of PT after hating it to begin with (probably because I always here it when I'm out HA!) And FFTL is great, but not quite as amazing as everyone make out. The other two are a bit shit, especially 'The Flood'.

Ghetto Baby is f***ing amazing, one of the best from the album.

YES at 'Ghetto Baby' love! I can't stand Lana Del Rey, but Cheryl's voice is much more catered to her material than she is, imo. She should stick to writing tracks for Cheryl. She can keep the dull 'Video Games' to herself though.

Ghetto Baby NEEDS a single push! One of Cheryl's best ever imo!

Posted by: Marina Hurts Dec 29 2012, 01:48 PM

This isn't too 'Lana del Rey', so it suits Cheryl.

I like that music video for "Ghetto Baby"; it's obvious not ground-breaking or high budget, but it suits the song a lot. It was never one of my favourite off A Million Lights, but the performance of it on tour really brought it to life for me.

My singles ranking would be:

1. "Fight For This Love" / "Call My Name" - genuinely too difficult to separate! Both fantastic pop songs of completely different genres, it's kind of weird that they're by the same artist!
3. "The Flood"
4. "Parachute"
5. "Promise This"
6. "3 Words"
7. "Under The Sun"

My ranking goes like this:

1. Call My Name
2. Fight For This Love
3. Under The Sun
4. The Flood
5. 3 Words
6. Promise This
7. Parachute

For A Million Lights, I REALLY hope she resumes this era (after the GA Tour) and make Sexy Den A Mutha and/or Screw You as single releases.

I know!! laugh.gif

I like the song sung by both Lana and Cheryl. Would be nice if it got a single push! Is it intended to be a single, the video release seems a little random...

'Screw You' yes, 'Sexy...' no no no.

'Under The Sun' has actually grown on me quite significantly since its release.

Pun intended? kink.gif

Screw You really should've been released! I'm still not that fussed with Under the Sun, probably the fact that she's DROWNED OUT by backing vocalists in the chorus.

Posted by: Calum Sandé Apr 8 2013, 11:16 PM

Under the Sun is by far the best on the album! heart.gif That >>>>>>>>> everything else
Ghetto Baby though <3

Posted by: Jonjo Apr 9 2013, 03:11 AM

'Under The Sun' still remains WEAK AS.

'Screw You' should have been second followed by a 'Ghetto Baby' or 'A Million Lights' release.

Posted by: Vülker Aug 11 2015, 08:20 AM

Gave this a spin yesterday and it's a better album than I remembered. The dubstep bits and bobs aged terribly but the main album is a very strong collection of songs.

'Screw You', 'Ghetto Baby' and 'Sexy Den a Mutha' should've followed 'Call My Name' as single releases in that order. nocheer.gif

"Under The Sun" was a great single choice though. Perfect Summer single. But they could've also released "Screw You" and "Ghetto Baby". It's a shame the GA reunion cut the era so short.
