Don't get the underwhelming comments for Katy Perry, it's a bop!

Love Hailee, The Vamps and Katy this week. Agree that Kygo/Ellie is poor, but I kind of thought it would be.

Same, it's really fun and really catchy.

Posted by: Mart!n Apr 28 2017, 08:56 AM

I'm surprised out of all the new releases The Vamps are doing better than the rest, I was expecting FOB, Katy Perry and KyEllie smashing it, but their tracks are pretty much awful, mind you the Kygo collaboration could go grow on me.

One Republic's track is a bit of a step back for them but its actually pretty good.

Posted by: M4NG0 Apr 28 2017, 09:15 AM

I actually really like the OneRepublic song, despite it being a blatant Shape Of You rip off. Imagine Dragons is pretty good too. Kygo/Ellie is underwhelming. Need to give the rest a few more listens though!

Katy Perry's new single is very disappointing on first listen - the only thing of merit really is how different it is to other tracks of the moment (but then so was "Chained To The Rhythm" and that didn't suffer from being crap!) - she really needed to follow single 1 up with an even bigger hit - something that could have hit number 1. This will struggle, on first thoughts. Hopefully it grows.

Kygo & Ellie's track is disappointing but I wasn't expecting much else after the disappointing "It Ain't Me" - I do not understand how people can really consider this 'dance' music. There's a beat for about 30% of the song if we're lucky?? Bland - Kygo has gone backwards this era while obviously featuring 'big' names - he doesn't need them, and he should have evolved his sound and set trends like his last era.

Posted by: Mart!n Apr 28 2017, 09:26 AM

I simply can't get into Katy Perry's track, I'm trying honestly to like it but I can't, its a bit underwhelming as said above.

To be fair the second album and the whole campaign wasn't great. they seem to be back on form with Album 3/ their release strategy.

I guess they had to be though otherwise they'd probably have been dropped

Really liking the new Katy, The Vamps and OneRepublic.

Katy's track is a grower, didn't like it at all first listen on Spotify this morning but heard it again on Radio an hour later and its totally wedged in my head.

Posted by: Mack Apr 28 2017, 12:29 PM

What would people consider a flop now? Not Top40?

The fact that a big artist e.g. Lady GaGa hasn't made the Top10. I don't think I call 'The Cure' a flop.

Posted by: Scene Apr 28 2017, 12:30 PM

I get why some aren't liking Bon Appetit on first listen but I enjoyed it. laugh.gif The "under candlelight, we can wine and dine" line is already stuck in my head. wub.gif What's with the Miley makeover though?

It's a figure of speech. As in "they appear to be homophobic"

Haven't they actually made homophobic remarks? I haven't looked into it in detail, but that's what I've heard suggested.

Their reply lol! Screams "I have as black friend" if someone is questioned about racism.

Posted by: danG Apr 28 2017, 01:18 PM

Seems odd that Katy would work with them in that case, although the label probably pushed Migos on to the record in order to sell more in the US (where 'Chained To The Rhythm' wasn't as big of a hit as they would've liked it to be)

Posted by: Joe. Apr 28 2017, 01:19 PM

Yeah, the US was the only place Chained didn't do quite as well. Even in Canada it was a bigger hit like it was in Europe.

Migos were just #1 for 3 weeks in the US, so I guess they're trying for a US hit with this one.

Agree. The Justin Bieber parts are very catchy and commercial sounding. I thought before listening this might be one of those non-commercial urban collaborations that's gone after a week, but I can see this sticking around near the top for a while because of Bieber.

Agreed, it has got worse since 2015 purely because the tropical saturation has got too much and now the Chainsmokers have came along and basically ruined music.

Yeah the pop scene is definitely going through a lull - there are just no big hitters besides Ed. There was the EDM electro-pop domination from 2009-11 but at least we had the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Lady GaGa, Rihanna etc making it interesting. I don't see much similarity between "I'm The One" and "One Dance" other than the main audience they'd appeal to... ITO is 81 BPM, OD is 105 BPM for a start, that's a considerable difference.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 Apr 29 2017, 04:17 PM

Bieber's name power has definitely increased the exposure for both Despacito and I'm the One but people aren't guaranteed to like it with his name alone, he had a collaboration with Post Malone last year and aside from a top 75 debut in week 1, that sunk without trace. Sure, Bieber's name boosted it but it's proof that not EVERYTHING Bieber does is an instant hit and these two seem pretty popular regardless.

Posted by: Lenny Apr 29 2017, 04:19 PM

DJ Snake's "Let Me Love You" which was a cherrypicked album track initially featuring Bieber is another example.

Yeah, Let Me Love You was pushed as a single from release.

You could argue the 'public are sheeps' case with any other artist tbh, even if a track does have Bieber on it shouldn't devalue its 'hit' status solely because he's on it - if the song wasn't good then the public wouldn't buy and stream it.

Yeah you've got a point there.

Half a decade ago Bieber was the least cool thing on the planet yet now he's unstoppable. God knows why.

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 Apr 29 2017, 06:14 PM

In all fairness Bieber's last album was very much on trend and "cool" in sound, the music speaks for why people have done a 180 on him really.

Posted by: Jonjo Apr 29 2017, 06:21 PM

Are musicians not allowed to change and develop as artists? laugh.gif he's always been popular (whether he was credible or not is another argument) but he definitely changed his sound with 'Purpose' and went on from there. I'd understand if he was churning out something like 'Baby' and was this successful, but he's growing with his fanbase (which is where a lot of artists go wrong imo) and pulling in more casual listeners too

His name alone isn't enough to get any random chart hit, hasn't he done quite a lot of random features which never really picked up after initial fanbase buys? DJ Khaled (for whatever reason) is getting more popular, Lil Wayne has a solid fanbase, Chance & Quavo are growing as artists and have small but dedicated fanbases and ofc with this debuting so high, it caught Capital's attention, so airplay will start from there.

Posted by: Zeebre12 Apr 29 2017, 06:35 PM

Nope. All his recent random features have been huge hits. His name alone is definitely enough nowadays.

Nah. Therefore proving the point that public aren't 'sheeps' to the extent people on here make out.

If a song is good and catchy enough it'll be a hit, but they won't just catch on to any old crap. Despacito and I'm The One are good tracks in their own right, that's why they're big.

p.s. I'm The One turned dark red on kworb (it's a common practice, I suppose)

Katy Perry's Bon Appetite is absolutely bombing everywhere around the world. Is the song really that bad? Even if it was really bad you would think she would have some sort of a fanbase to push it up initially for the first few days. It didn't even reach top 10 on i-tunes in the US at all, no matter how bad it was surely it would be high first and then drop. I know i-tunes doesn't sell as much as it used to but then it should be easier for acts like Katy Perry with such low sales. Her last lead single Roar opened with 557k and this pre album single might only reach 20k. I know sales on i-tunes aren't what they used to be but still they are not that bad. Chart music seems to be dominated by males/dance acts could that be a problem also that its a pretty bad song?

Vidcapper, are you serious? That's been happening since the 90s. Puff Daddy had several hits with 4 or 5 features

Also, who can forget that Blu Cantrell had a huge hit with 4 features, didn't she?

Blu Cantrell & Sean Paul Feat. Sean Paul, Sean Paul & Sean Paul - Breathe

Speaking of features, what's the song with the most features (individually credited) to go to number 1? Is it that Notorious B.I.G. banger, 'Nasty Girl'?

I think so (with five artists), but also a charity single from 1989 'Ferry Cross The Mersey' was credited to The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden and Stock Aitken Waterman (also five).

It depends on your source. Spotify/iTunes don't credit any featured artists, YouTube credits Rihanna and Kid Cudi, and the OCC credit Rihanna and Drake (despite Drake not actually being on the song).

Posted by: Cremey Apr 30 2017, 10:02 AM

I think Drake provided backing vocals, although it's odd he was credited yet Kid Cudi or Fergie weren't, when their parts were much more prominent.

I remember reading that there were 26 featured artists on it? I don't know if that's true but there were definitely backing vocals from Elton John, Alicia Keys. La Roux, John Legend...

Wikipedia says it was 14.

"All of the Lights" was written by Kanye West, Jeff Bhasker, Malik Jones and Warren Trotter.[4] Its production was helmed by West himself and co-produced by Bhasker. Fourteen artists lent their voices as background vocals to the song: Alicia Keys, John Legend, The-Dream, Drake, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Elton John, Ryan Leslie, Charlie Wilson, Tony Williams, Elly Jackson, Alvin Fields, Ken Lewis, and Rihanna, who also sang the song's hook and is labeled as a featured artist on the single version.[4][5] West and Rihanna previously collaborated with Jay-Z on "Run This Town" (The Blueprint 3, 2009).[6]

They are all featured on the song though, this is quite usual for a rap track to credit the rappers, also JB contributes a lot to the song and DJ Khaled is the producer and has been having lead artist tracks released for years.

Just looking at the top ten on iTunes, does anyone else feel like we've gone from 0 to 100 on the amount of stuff breaking through in the past few weeks. It was all very stale a month ago but now we seem to be getting at least 3 or 4 potential new hits a week.

Ed's also touring at the moment, which will be helping if, for example, lots of people in the crowd have dragged along their parents or whatever who have somehow avoided or not warmed up to the song until now.

This old gem.

Can't people be sick of a song that's been top of the charts for almost 4 months? Does being top of the charts mean that it's 'evidently a great song'? Do you honestly believe that if it were Anne-Marie singing it, people would want it no.1 for eternity because she has a vagina?

You're worse than those moaning tbh because you're categorising everyone in the same box.

I think Shape Of You would be a poor single regardless of who's singing it. Rihanna maybe would have successfully made it a bit more raunchy and sexy which would help a lot, it's one of the most sexless sex songs I've ever heard, but either way I think the song is rotten from the inside out.

Posted by: Lenny May 1 2017, 06:50 PM

"Shape Of You" would have been a massive hit for anyone B-list let alone A-list

Posted by: Bjork May 1 2017, 06:56 PM

but doubt it would have been 4 months at #1 for anyone else
the last 6/7 weeks at #1 the song got there cos people were streaming the album, not just Shape alone, without double counting it wouldn't have been #1 for so long

Posted by: Lenny May 1 2017, 06:58 PM

Posted by: Joe. May 1 2017, 07:00 PM

I think Shape of You would have been some kind of hit regardless, but given it's a very similar tropi-bop to loads of things that had been coming out all year, I don't think it would have felt quite as distinctive to the GP if it wasn't attached to Ed Sheeran. I don't think it would have been #1 if it were released by someone who wasn't an A lister, though still a top 5/10 hit. For example, I can't see Anne Marie having made it #1. (You can say this about many things though, M.O probably wouldn't have made 'Shout Out To My Ex' #1 either)

Well then the criticism should be aimed at the women who aren't delivering right now. Katy Perry could easily be wracking up weeks at #1 right now, given the low sales needed to get there, but her 2 songs have been met with a luke warm reaction at best, it is not like people haven't given them a chance just more they have been met with a 'meh'. The Cure is trend chasing but Gaga is in serious damage control in the UK (a country leaning album was never going to go down well here). Rihanna gave up on Anti in the UK the month after release. The women can and will deliver but aren't right now, so it being male dominated isn't a surprise.

I agree, I remember when I first heard it, I just knew it was going to be massive for months on end. It's one of those songs that catches a certain mood or sound just at the right time and had the added push of being sung by one of the most popular singers of the day. But, yeah, Ed or no Ed that song would have been huge. Though I'm not sure anyone could have sung it considering how many Relatable™ Sheeran lyrics were shoehored in.

He shifted 37.5k first week with This Town - realistically we can expect him to have Hot Hits and NMF support from the off, and providing that the top 50 playlist is updating it's very possible he'll shift 26k over the space of the week, assuming that's around the top 10 threshold.

(I see him doing 20k on iTunes over the week easily so 6k in streams should be achievable easily!)

I can see this matching/surpassing that when the video is out if streaming and airplay continue to build.

Even if it doesn't, The Cure (and Million Reasons for that matter) have had much more of a cultural impact than Perfect Illusion has. Don't see PI becoming a GaGa classic in peoples minds over time unlike the two I have mentioned.

It might not have peaked as high but it's showing MUCH better longevity so far on both sales and streams. Perfect Illusion dived after its #12 peak whereas The Cure climbed in week 2. Definitely going to be a bigger hit in the long run.

I think you are overestimating the cultural impact of a song that peaked at 19 (and 39 as is the case with Million Reasons).
Don't see any of them being considered as classics.

I wouldn't say so. Gaga has so many more songs that would be more recognisable to the general public than Million Reasons. If 'Name a Lady Gaga top 40 single' was a question on Pointless, Million Reasons would score very few points (as would Perfect Illusion).

Most of my friends know it and like it, whereas only a few friends (all pop stans) knew and liked Perfect Illusion - The Cure is quite a large hit now. These days songs don't need a high peak for them to be a hit, take Love My Life by Robbie Williams and You Don't Know Love by Olly Murs as other recent examples! biggrin.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 May 2 2017, 09:22 PM

Million Reasons and The Cure won't be Gaga classics in the same way Just Dance, Poker Face and Bad Romance are, but Million Reasons in particular was probably a more notable hit than its peak suggests tbh, and I suspect The Cure will be the same by the time it leaves the chart!

The Cure I believe is bigger than Perfect Illusion was because it is tropical pop and sounds more relevant to current trends.

Gaga's consistent performance on iTunes today is amazing considering she's apparently "over"!

Posted by: Brer May 2 2017, 10:36 PM

'The Cure' has grown on me loads, I already thought it was better than the singles from her last album after one listen but it's now in my top 3 of her singles along with 'Do What U Want' and 'Judas'. Pleased to see it's sticking around on iTunes at least, would like to see it being a big hit. I wouldn't have thought Gaga would be one to deliver a decent song in the 'tropical pop' trend laugh.gif (although really it doesn't sound that 'tropical' to me, I just see it labelled that way a lot)

That's a really interesting question. Unless I'm missing something (which is very possible), other than Bad & Boujee there hasn't been a #1 in the US that hasn't been top 10 here for a long time. Before the aforementioned, the last instance I found was This Is Why I'm Hot by Mims from 2007 that hit #1 in the US, but only made #18 here. For an "established artist", I found Mariah's Don't Forget About us in 2005 that topped Billboard and reached #11 here.

EDIT: Seems I did miss out on Set Fire To The Rain. Think I just saw Adele's name and totally forgot it missed top ten.

That's the limitation of thinking a song's popularity is accurately reflected in its chart position... not all songs are. I heard Bad & Boujee loads on radio stations, in clubs, at house parties and people's playlist. More than enough to tell me that is was a genuinely popular song.

Maybe it appealed to more of a niche than the Ed Sheeran album but that doesn't make a song not big. For example, I'd argue that Bad & Boujee has felt a lot bigger than the new Lady Gaga single.

That's funny because my impression of it has been the complete opposite - I only ever heard it on the chart show and when I sought out to listen to it. Off of BuzzJack, I've never heard one person talking about it, or blasting it out of their car, or play it in their DJ set. So to me, its chart position was really well reflected because it was not a monster hit here like it was in the US.

Well that's probably because The Cure has only been out just over 2 weeks compared to what? Like 7 month?

This is more based on your own experiences though, no? Not a dig or anything but it's not at all surprising going by your tastes that you'd say Bad and Boujee was a bigger hit than The Cure, whereas from my own experience with my own tastes, I've seen a hell of a lot more hype for The Cure. The chart balances all this, and if Bad and Boujee were more popular, it would've charted higher.

Probably says more about the circles we both frequent to be honest.

Posted by: danG May 3 2017, 06:49 PM

He has a point, the lyrics of the hook became somewhat of an internet meme so had cultural impact in that way, plus it had good longevity for a number 30 hit.

Posted by: mdh May 3 2017, 06:52 PM

Yeah personally I've seen more hype for Bad And Boujee over time, but I do know people that like The Cure who're in totally different circles to those that like Bad And Boujee so overall it's a bit of a hard comparison to make.

It's subjective really, everyone has different social experiences so you can't really determine which has been more popular.

Even the current #1 on the Official Chart from Clean Bandit I've only heard about once or twice. It's either that as well is not a massively huge song or I've just completely shut myself off from the charts.

But for it to be a huge hit on download and streams would mean that people have gone out of their way to listen to or buy this song.

I'm thinking about songs that you hear a lot by accident. A good example is Human by Rag'N'Bone Man, I don't particularly like this song but I've heard it so many times and it has been used for just about everything. Even my mum knows this song and she hasn't got a clue about newer music laugh.gif

And they clearly have tongue.gif

My mum is undoubtedly much more familiar with Human than the likes of Symphony, The Cure, etc (no matter how many times I play them in the car laugh.gif) because it's the kinda thing she likes. Some songs you hear around and about, some you don't, but that doesn't necessarily match up with what does well in the charts, it's just a tiny way of consuming music. Not hearing a song out in public doesn't mean it can't be massively popular, hence why we have the charts.

Do you dislike every future bass song? I even found one I like (Another Life) and I am not the biggest fan of the genre.

Maybe the Marshmello type of future bass might become popular soon as a trend, which I would certainly encourage as it does have a very eurodance-esque sound to it in the buildups (particularly in Alone).

Anyway for a new trend to take place, I think Radio 1 needs to add more stuff to its daytime playlist that doesn't fit current trends, in dance especially there are loads of great tunes on dance anthems that don't get played during the daytime as they don't fit with current trends for minimal house, tropical house or future bass.

I don't know with pop, but if dance changes then pop should change with it as the two are linked at the minute as we see with the tropical pop and future bass influenced pop trends at the minute.

Part of me wonders if this is labels experimenting with trying to increase Spotify streams in week one - releasing it on Thursday means that it'll get additional exposure on Spotify on Friday as it starts appearing in list earlier than other new releases and gives it a head start for the weekend. Digital sales are becoming less and less relevant anyway, so losing a day of "sales" might be worth it.

0.7809 on DJ Khaled at #1 - expect it to be iTunes #1 within the hour or so.

What a flop! biggrin.gif

Niall ignored UK and only promoted in US... Louis had XF UK and Harry had the R1 host + Friday release and full radios support...

Niall only had the GN Show there lol

Do you really think Miley Cyrys can make top 10 officially? ohmy.gif

It's the first song Miley has released for ages, you'd think she'd get enough hype to enter the top ten though it is impossible to fully judge without hearing the song.

And perhaps I was being too harsh on Niall, he seems to be climbing really well so I guess another top 10 hit awaits, probably with a higher peak than 'This Town' too as it sounds more accessible.

I reckon Miley can easily make top 40, depending on whether the song is good enough or not I think it could be top 20. Niall looks good for top 10, with sales so low I reckon he can make top 5 as the song sounds BIG.

Trust the British public to make all the recent 1D solo releases big hits except for the one I actually like though sleep.gif (Zayn's 'Still Got Time', which I suppose isn't doing too badly but it did miss the top 20)

#8 Niall Horan - Slow Hands
Top 20 Camila Cabello - tbc (she'll have some big following from fifth harmony?)
Top 30 Jonas Blue - Mama
Top 75 Haim - Want You Back (they'll do well on sales but won't do anything on streaming)
Top 75 Galantis - Hunter (might climb afterwards depending on how it sounds)

8- Niall - Slow hand
70| HAIM - Want You Back
xx | Halsey - Eyes Closed
Xx| Camilla Cabello - TBC
55| Jonas Blue - Mama (feat. William Singe)
Xx| Galantis - Hunter

Being pessimistic/realistic too

Slow Hands is actually really good and I have a bit of a soft spot for Niall so I hope it's a good hit for him!

You really think Camila won't chart at all? She'll almost certainly be top 100 at the very least.

Posted by: ElectroBoy May 4 2017, 07:34 PM

Niall up to 0.8962 of Number 1

... I have a feeling he may stall at Number 2

Posted by: UltraGreenLight May 4 2017, 08:02 PM

Camila's debut single will be a massive top 3 hit*. Mark my words! (I have such a good feeling about it!)

*Potentially even #1 depending who else releases over the next couple of months

Also is it confirmed for tomorrow? Have a feeling it won't come out for a couple of weeks as there seems to be no official announcements! (Though it will definitely be out before the end of this month as she is performing at the BBMAs!)

Posted by: danG May 4 2017, 08:23 PM

Has anyone heard Camilla's single yet? I imagine it'll be an instant top 20 hit from her name but whether it develops into a big top 3 smash depends on how good it is.

Posted by: John-James May 4 2017, 08:29 PM

Niall is taking his sweet time getting to #1

Don't think so but a LOT of big producers are saying fantastic stuff about her & there seems to be massive hype! I really think this could be a mini Crazy In Love kinda-hit!
