24th June 2018

It's four weeks on top for Panic! At The Disco, just holding themselves off the top as the fab Hey Look Ma, I Made It enters at 2, so that's 3 hits in 2018 and 2 tracks to enter straight into the top 3. It's unusual for acts who aren't megastars to occupy the top 2 simultaneously in my chart - time they broke big I say! The last 4 weeker on top was VINAI in 2017, and they brings Chainsmokers Paris belatedly into my top 40, the remix having a bit more oomph than the hit version for me.

Holland-Dozier & Lamont finally get into my top 10 only a mere 46 years after they almost made it first time round. Back in the day, had producer writers billed themselves as modern acts do they would have been superstars: Holland-Dozier-Holland featuring The Four Tops, The Supremes for a start, among many others. Lenny Kravitz gets his first entry in 4 years at 22, not Low at all, and extends his run to 27 years, though that is peanuts compared to Paul McCartney.

Macca has his first new material for 3 years hot off a James Corden Liverpool boost, which also boosted Beatles tracks into the itunes charts, so in comes Blackbird for a second minor run and Penny Lane for its 4th run. Hey Jude topped the British charts when I discovered the Singles Chart Sunday run-down, so that's where I started my chart as Chart Number One (retrospectively a few years later - my first actual personal chart was at the end of 1968), with Hey Jude topping my first chart, and thus giving Macca almost 50-years of new material. Surprisingly other acts in that first chart still active are several: Barry Gibb, Tom Jones, Brian Wilson, and it's not unthinkable that Aretha Franklin might still do new stuff.

The late Lee Hazelwood has a first solo entry with an oldie about being an oldie, a track Ive just come across, lush and haunting, he's had loads of entries with Nancy Sinatra dating back to 1971. Rick Astley replaces himself in the top 40 with his fab new disco track, 31 years and counting Rick is still Rolling. Trust me, not one music critic in 1987/88 would have bet a pound on Kylie & Rick being still a thing in the 2010's. Me neither! Years & Years get a Mrs Brown boost, and enter with the new title album track, LeAnn Rimes has over 20 years of entries, joined with Stevie Nicks extending her solo billing to 37 years, or Mac-career to 42 years.

I will have to check out the LeAnn and Stevie track, I'm a big Stevie fan!

I'm also enjoying the new Panic! at the Disco stuff, more than any of their previous stuff to be honest. Better late than never I guess? Similar actually to other bands of their generation like Paramore and Fall Out Boy, their more modern stuff is much more up my street than their earliers.

Also very happy to see Deaf Havana Sinner doing well, an instant hit for me but I've not seen in on anyone else's charts as yet!

Other top picks and ones to check out here for me:
Fuego, Light in Places (nice to see this one!), Girlfriend, Stop Me from Falling and Hunger!

Great read biggrin.gif

Hey there John hi.gif

Wow at Panic! At The Disco occupying your top two, I really need to check out these new songs from them as I have loved their stuff in the past. On to stuff I do know, hooray for 'Penny Lane' entering here, the double-A side of that and 'Strawberry Fields Forever' is a flawless duo of songs. I need to check out Paul McCartney's Carpool Karaoke! I'm sure that will make me feel even more hyped for my trip to The Beatles museum in a couple of months for my 21st!

Fast-forwarding things to 2018, I'm pleased to see 'Solo' sneaking in here! Definitely one of my favourite #1 singles of the year, I was feeling quite underwhelmed by 2018 U.K. chart toppers earlier in the year so I'm glad we've had the likes of that, 'Nice For What' and 'One Kiss' now.

Great stuff happy.gif

Hi John!

Another fan of Hey Look Ma, it's quite nice I guess but the lyrics aren't exactly me laugh.gif

Penny Lane - now that's one I had to play in various primary/high school performances! It is a very good song biggrin.gif

Low sounds like a grower - I'm liking the guitar riff and the drums!

Nice to see Solo enter this week, as well as Shotgun which will (hopefully) take the #1 spot officially this Friday

Great chart biggrin.gif

Omg I am loving the Throw That Boy Pussy entry here 😀

Nice to see Penny Lane and one of Paul's new songs here too, his Carpool Karaoke video is amazing! I loved when they surprised all the people in the pub!

I like the entries for Clean Bandit and George Ezra too, two very good songs there!

Great chart this week cheer.gif

Glad u adore Adore too its fab reminds me a bit of a zayn type track. Fab.

Also happy you are happy i sent ria mae one of my songs of the year love it i do laugh.gif

I always like years n years though if youre over me is so jolly i havent clicked on it so much as usual yet, but its good and nice to see them doing better in the charts than sanctuary did

Solo took me awhile to get over demi and her gimmicky vocal and shotgun was also so jolly i needed to hear it a few times before clicking. Can totally see why they are so huge now tho!

Thanks again smile.gif
Cheers

I did see Help! In a Liverpool cinema when i was a lil kiddie though when i lived there, and i revisited it the week the recent 8 days a week movie was showing - the same actual cinema in waterloo showing the beatles!

Hi pete!

You lucky kids getting to play penny lane st school! I would have loved to have played penny lane - admittedly it was in the charts then and i loved it laugh.gif all we got was rubbish obscure tunes ive never heard since ruined by kids playing tuneless recorders while our very old primary teacher tried to sing it in tune without using lyrics and shouting out the notes A A F A A F blah blah blah. laugh.gif

Low is pretty oldskool funkysoul sounds better after rrpeat plays.

You got your wish, shotgun at last giving george a number 1, yay!

Cheers!
