The Super Bowl was obviously a huge moment in Madonna's career and she really pulled out all the stops to make it a big spectacle, changing the look of the halftime shows in the future. The Cleopatra theme made it look so grand and important and the multimedia projections during 'Vogue' were so impressive. The only criticism was the slight desperation to be on-trend with the featured artists who didn't have a whole lot to do with Madonna. I just think someone as big as Madonna could bring out someone more impressive than LMFAO or Cee-Lo Green (although I did smile at Madonna doing the "shuffle"). It didn't distract from what a great performance it was though.
The BRITs performance is the second huge live moment of course - I'll never forget by heart stopping when she fell and that split second where I thought she was seriously injured. It was a shame it had to happen as it distracted from the rest of the performance. I remember it seemed to last an eternity and I just wanted it to be over because I was just in a state of shock ha! It did show her sheer professionalism and, among the jokes, it was pleasing to see a lot of good will towards Madonna from the public for a short while after. |

My personal picks for favourite performances are the tender, more intimate experiences. I've narrowed it down to these three:
Borderline - an unexpected moment for sure. She wasn't there to promote music, it was just about the love of music and she gave such a heartfelt, warm performance with this stripped down version of 'Borderline'. I love the arrangement and the way she sings from the heart, there's no gimmicks here, just Madonna's natural charisma. Ghosttown - one of my favourite songs this decade and this performance allowed Madonna to really show its beauty. So nice to see Taylor and Madonna supporting one another, I'd have liked it if Taylor had sang a verse or joined for a chorus but this was still special regardless. Intervention - this was at the time Madonna's relationship with son Rocco had gone estranged and it was clearly a very hard time for Madonna. I hadn't known 'Intervention' was about her son but hearing the lyrics after she dedicated it to him brought a tears to my eyes when I heard this performance. Really pushed the song high in my affections. |

The BRITs performance is the most memorable one for me. It has become one of those "where were you when..." moments I was visibly aghast, heartbroken, shocked... all emotions.
I really like your more subtle picks. The "Intervention" one in particular is beautiful :'( |

If you saw it live, I don't think you'll ever forget the reaction you had. I still get a chill when I watch it back now. |
