There were 65 different Disney characters that got votes, not bad considering only 6 of you voted, but it's worked out that in 1st place gets 20 points and so on, plus there were a lot of ties, so I will try and get through them as quickly as possible.

Starting off here's all the ones that just got 1 vote each =

=65th. Esmeralda (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame) = 1 Point

=65th. Jiminy Cricket (Pinocchio & Fun & Fancy Free) = 1 Point

=65th. Flounder (The Little Mermaid) = 1 Point

I forgot to do characters!

Posted by: SamJudd 23rd June 2016, 10:18 PM

=45th The Cheshire Cat (Alice In Wonderland) = 10 Points

The 3rd 'Alice In Wonderland' character to appear in this countdown, surprisingly beating The Red Queen. Mischievous and takes pleasure in misleading Alice and can dislodge his head from his body, as well as appear invisible, his colourful design is quite striking and he is one of many memorable characters from the classic.

=45th Li Shang (Mulan) = 10 Points

The 2nd most popular character from 'Mulan' according to Buzzjack, beating comic relief 'Mushu' by quite a mile. The captain of the Chinese army and one of the main characters in the Disney classic, a strong and powerful force in commanding his soldiers, but perhaps his most memorable moment was his song "I'll Make A Man Out Of You".

=45th Shere Khan (The Jungle Book) = 10 Points

The wonderfully fearsome Shere Khan whose the main villain in 'The Jungle Book' who even without even doing anything can come across as evil and menacing, the big build up to him before he even enters the frame was interesting, he rules the jungle with an iron fist and comes across as very charming until he moves in for the kill.

=42nd Prince Phillip (Sleeping Beauty) = 11 Points

The first ever Prince in the classic fairytale Disney genre that has a character and says more than 3 lines, and in fact the first Prince to actually do something other than show up and take the Princess away to a land far, far away. He shows courage and personality, plus he defeats the dragon in the end and wins, so that's something.

=42nd Piglet (The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh & Winnie The Pooh (2011) = 11 Points

The ever lovable Piglet, the only character from Winnie The Pooh to feature in this countdown and gaining scores from 2 votes a 4 and a 7 which brings his total to 11. One of Winnie The Pooh's many closest friends as well as probably apart from the title character being the most fondly remembered.

=42nd Beast (Beauty and the Beast) = 11 Points

Here we have the lovable 'Beast' from the fantastic classic 'Beauty and the Beast', a pampered and mean Prince who gets cursed into a beast for his selfish and cold hearted ways and has to earn the love of Belle in order to transform back into his human self. At first he's angry and hot tempered but as events go on we see him and Belle build their relationship and he starts softening and that's when we all start to love him, honestly I was disappointed when he turned human at the end, because he was so brilliant in his animal form, but oh well that's the way the story goes I suppose.

Posted by: SamJudd 23rd June 2016, 10:50 PM

=39th Scar (The Lion King) = 12 Points

The main antagonist from 'The Lion King' who does actually succeed in killing his brother and taking his throne, until Simba comes back. Voiced by the ever amazing Jeremy Iron who injects so much enthusiasm into this character who is so cunning and evil that he is just a delight to watch.

=39th Cinderella (Cinderella) = 12 Points

Here we have the lovely Cinderella the title character, everybody knows who she is and everybody knows the story. As a character she always remains nice and kind, no matter how horrible things get and in the end she gets her happy ending which was well deserved.

=39th Mickey Mouse (Fantasia, Fun & Fancy Free & Fantasia 2000) = 12 Points

Here we have the face of Disney himself Mickey Mouse who apart from featuring 3 of the Disney Animated Features, he featured in several of his own movies and TV shows. The first ever creation from Walt Disney himself and has become the official mascot for Disney ever since.

=39th Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) = 12 Points

The very first Disney Princess Snow White and also the first female fictional star to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. There have been many incarnations of this character through the years, but this is definitely the most well known and loved. Kind, sweet, thoughtful and how can you not love her.

Posted by: SamJudd 23rd June 2016, 11:25 PM

=35th Judy Hopps (Zootopia) = 13 Points

Judy Hopps from Disney's latest smash hit 'Zootopia', considering how new the film is, it is surprising that she's this high on the list, but given the fact that the movie is so brilliant and she was probably the best thing in it. Plucky and determined and has already won the hearts of the nation and will probably climb higher on the list in years to come.

=35th Jafar (Aladdin) = 13 Points

The wonderfully camp villain Jafar from Disney's 'Aladdin', an evil sorcerer whose very powerful and also has brilliant comic timing and his design is spot on and makes for one of Disney's most interesting and fun villains.

33rd Meghara (Hercules) = 14 Points

Another Disney Princess to feature in this countdown, but Meg from 'Hercules' is not the typical damsel in distress whose snarky and funny that generally makes her feel like a real person and in fact she is highly underrated and should on the official Disney Princess list, she has definitely more than earned a position.

=32nd Vanellope Von Schweetz (Wreck It Ralph) = 15 Points

The first of 2 characters from 'Wreck It Ralph' to feature in this list, the loveable little girl from yet another amazing Disney classic, her friendship with the title character is one of the film's many highlights and she is just so loveable, cute and you really feel for her when we are first introduced to her, she is incredibly likeable and she definitely stands out amongst the many characters in 'WIR'.

=32nd Gus Gus (Cinderella) = 15 Points

The loveable and cute mouse from Disney's classic 'Cinderella', just one of the many side characters and definitely stands out in helping Cinderella, that makes him one of the more memorable characters due to the solid amount of screen time he and is mice friends get.

Posted by: SamJudd 24th June 2016, 06:26 PM

=30th The Fairy Godmother (Cinderella) = 16 Points

A Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo, The final Cinderella character to feature here is the ever wonderful Fairy Godmother who despite only appearing in one scene, makes a significant impact on the storyline and Cinderella's eventual outcome. Probably one of Disney's best known and well remembered figures.

=30th Olaf (Frozen) = 16 Points

The first of 3 'Frozen' characters to feature here and dropping first is the loveable 'Olaf' a snowman brought to life thanks to Elsa's magic and quickly provides the comic relief, those characters are usually hit or miss, but thankfully 'Olaf' quickly melts your heart thanks to the energetic voice work by Josh Gad.

=28th Alice (Alice In Wonderland) = 17 Points

The most popular character in Alice In Wonderland according to Buzzjack is simply Alice herself, which is quite a surprise considering the amount of colourful characters that feature in it. Alice herself the main protagonist is a sensible girl who has a strong sense that her environment is comprised of clear, logical, and consistent rules and features. Also brave and intelligent that makes for a decent main lead.

=28th Rapunzel (Tangled) = 17 Points

The only 'Tangled' character to feature here is Rapunzel herself, a lively spirited personality with charm and quirkiness that makes for a great Disney Princess whose self reliant and doesn't always have to be saved and not the typical damsel in distress. She definitely feels more human than the typical princess and makes for a fantastic role model, and also she is the first computer animated Disney Princess.

=28th Captain Hook (Peter Pan) = 17 Points

The ever hilarious 'Captain Hook' a vain coward and a far more comical take on the character than any other version, but it simply works here and makes for a well and truly memorable character, especially his inter actions with Smee and the Crocodile which are comedy gold.

55-51

55. Make Mine Music //Avg.3.625

Highest Scores: 5.5 (SamJudd), Lowest Scores: 1 (HausofKubrick)

No surprise here really, in this bottom 5 we already lose 4 of the 6 package films and dropping out first is 'Make Mine Music', which didn't gain many scores, the scores it did gain were no higher than a 5. Coming during a time in the 1940's where Disney animators were divided between the army and making propaganda films, which is basically just a bunch of animated shorts mashed together without much of a narration, and this is the worst offender of the bunch, so no wonder it came dead last. Although there is some nice animation here and the most memorable story here is "The Whale Who Wanted To Sing At The Met", but other than that, there isn't anything that special going on here.

54. Fun & Fancy Free //Avg. 4.166

Highest Scores: 6: (Joe), Lowest Scores: 3: (Alex, HausofKubrick)

Again another package film 'Fun & Fancy Free', another one that didn't gain many scores, but is better than 'MMM', this one has just 2 segments, one called 'Bongo', which is about a circus bear who escapes captivity and falls in love, and the 2nd story which is probably the most remembered ''Mickey & The Beanstalk', which features Mickey Mouse doing his take on the old fairytale 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.

53. Melody Time //Avg.4.214

Highest Scores: 7: (bartsimpson), Lowest Scores: 1: (HausofKubrick)

Yet another package film that again features a collection of short stories that lacks logic and slapped together without any thought. There are some positives about this one though, it does feature the well known American story "The Legend Of Johnny Appleseed", which is quite interesting and does have a nice blend of colours and animation. Then there are 2 other shorts that I don't really remember, but as a whole this collection is just ok. Again this didn't gain hardly any high scores apart from the one 7, the rest were 5 or under.

52. Saludos Amigos // Avg.4.357

Highest Scores: 9.5: (Ultraviolence1989), Lowest Rates: 1: (HausofKubrick)

Yes as you can see this is yet another Disney package film, 'Sauldos Amigos' which was actually the first of the 6 movies from this troubled era of Disney, this one does feature a familiar face in Donald Duck where he travels to South America and learns how to Samba, which was kinda fun. This features 4 animated shorts that are more of an educational movie, than a fun Disney movie.

51. Fantasia 2000 // Avg. 4.5

Highest Scores: 8: (Chez Wombat), Lowest Scores: -1: (Beatrix Kiddo)

Finally something than a package film, 'Fantasia 2000', released just after the Disney Renaissance and the follow up the 1940 original. Only this one isn't as fondly remembered or as loved. Originally Walt Disney himself wanted to make a slew of these films, but that didn't happen and so the studio decided to wait until the turn of the century to follow it up. Although it is a nice idea as this does feature new segments and beautiful animation, but on the whole it offers nothing new, just style over substance that are introduced by celebrity cameos, which was totally pointless as was this movie.

Posted by: SamJudd 27th June 2016, 01:09 AM

=25th Donald Duck (Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Fun & Fancy Free, Melody Time & Fantasia 2000) = 18 Points

Scoring more points than his famous friend 'Mickey' is none other than 'Donald Duck' whose probably as equally famous as Mickey and equally as iconic. Created in 1934 and to date has appeared in over 150 movies, and out of the 55 official Disney animated classics has appeared in 5 which is the most than any other Disney character to date. He is well known for his short temperature and positive outlook on life.

=25th The Evil Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) = 18 Points

Known simply as 'The Evil Queen', here we have the first ever Disney villain, cold cruel and extremely vain, and wants nothing more than to be the fairest in the land, even willing to kill Snow White in the process. Striking in design and frightening when she transforms into the old hag. A very interesting character who well and truly leaves a lasting impression on you forever.

=25th Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) = 18 Points

Princess Aurora the title character from the wonderful 'Sleeping Beauty', established for her beauty and fashion, but often noted for not having much involvement in her own story which is the common complaint, well DUH the story is called 'Sleeping Beauty' what do you expect. She was the 3rd ever Disney Princess and scores pretty big points here.

=25th Mrs Potts (Beauty and the Beast) = 18 Points

The 3rd out of 4 characters from 'Beauty and the Beast', the wonderful and kind Mrs Potts whose scored points by 3 voters, voiced by the equally talented and wonderful Angela Lansbury. Intelligent, level headed and the most reliant character in the movie who was just like the other staff members turned into an household object, in her case a teapot. Definitely one the best characters from that movie and even sings the theme song, which is a magical moment in the movie itself.

=25th Bagheera (The Jungle Book) = 18 Points

Bagheera wise and intelligent while also being stern and caring as he guides Mowgli to the man village and has looked out for him is entire life. A great character who well deserving a place on this countdown.

50-46

50. Meet The Robinsons // Avg.4.541

Highest Scores: 7.5/7: (Jimmy Jam, Chez Wombat, Mike Sugafan), Lowest Scores: -1: (Ultraviolence1989)

At #50 we have the not so popular 'Meet The Robinsons', where despite 3 ok scores of 7, the rest were mainly low scores of under 5. It does however include some interesting themes with a detailed depiction of the world in the future of '2037' and has a likeable main character in Lewis a young inventor left at an orphanage, and Wilbur Robinson who arrives from the future and introduces him to his eccentric family. But it's often overstuffed with way too many characters thrown at us that apart from their personality traits and quirks we are not given enough time to know them, and plus there's that pointless dinosaur attack that feels tacked on. This came at a time when Disney were still struggling with a string of critical and box office disappointments during the 00's and this didn't do much to change that, despite doing okay business with $169 Million worldwide box office gross. Not a completely terrible mess, it just doesn't stand as being all that memorable.

49. Dinosaur // Avg.4.571

Highest Scores: 8.5: (Ultraviolence1989, Qween), Lowest Scores: -1: (Jimmy Jam, Cameron)

Another post renaissance era Disney, in fact all the ones in this selection are from that troubling time period, which isn't a good sign. 'Dinosaur' which boasts an interesting concept of computer animated dinosaurs against a live action landscape, which back in 2000 seemed breathtaking, but 16 years on and the advancements of technology, it just looks kinda stale and dated now. The story isn't bad though and does take some interesting routes, but they cocked up so badly by having the dinosaurs talk, which was seen as a rip off from 'The Land Before Time', and if they just stuck with the original idea of not having them talk, then this could have been so much more special and original. While there are some stunning sequences, on the whole however this just feels kinda bland and not very entertaining.

48. Home On The Range // Avg.4.708

Highest Scores: 10: (Jimmy Jam, Ultraviolence1989), Lowest Scores: -1: (Harry Ezra)

At #48 we have the truly awful 'Home On The Range', one of Disney's biggest flops and highly considered to be one of their worst. Despite decent voice talent from the likes of Roseanne Barr, Judi Dench and Jennifer Tilley, this should have been a hell of a lot of fun, but sadly it wasn't, the humour was just way too childish and tone was all over the place and a complete mess, if there was an emotional punch to it, then it's completely lost amongst the pointless slapstick. This is one of the ones more geared towards small children, I know all Disney animation is supposed to, but in this case there's nothing entertaining for anyone older and while the animation is decent, it's just not up to Disney's standards with it's stale colour palette, no wonder they struggled during this era with stuff like this, it did seem that Disney had totally lost the magic by this point.

47. Atlantis: The Lost Empire // Avg.5.156

Highest Scores: 8: (Beatrix Kiddo, Qween), Lowest Scores: -1: (Chez Wombat, Harry Ezra)

At #47 we have Disney's first attempt at Sci-Fi 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire', which actually despite it's amount of low scores is not that bad. Visually it's stunning and you can tell a lot of detail and thought was put into it. We do have a decent and strong protagonist in Milo and it is a fun adventure, but does come with flaws, like the story while interesting does fall rather flat at times, and does come off as all style and no substance, with weak character development from most of the cast apart from Milo and a boring villain. The land of Atlantis itself was breathtaking and there are some impressive action scenes that hold up pretty well today, but I can see the flaws that everybody else sees that prevents this from being a true Disney classic.

46. Chicken Little // Avg.5.323

Highest Scores: 10: (Harry Ezra), Lowest Scores: -1/0: (Regina, Chez Wombat, Beatrix Kiddo)

At #46 we have Disney's very first fully computer animated feature 'Chicken Little'. Coming off the box office disappointments of their last 3 traditional animated features, it was decided that computer animation was the way to go, after Pixar had been creaming them for the last couple of years, and this was their first effort. While at the time it didn't look too bad, nothing special, these days however it looks rather dated and as for the movie itself, well I have to say it's just simply awful, never have I seen something so mean spirted and ugly in all my life and this is supposed to be Disney. It's not just the tone it's the whole plot as well, nothing is really fully developed with simply too much going on and just comes across as unfocused and the main action at the end was just underdeveloped, as well as the characters who were just horrible, apart from Chicken Little himself and Abby and the way they are treated throughout is just terrible. Just didn't like this one and struggled to find anything positive about it.

Posted by: SamJudd 2nd July 2016, 09:26 PM

=20th Yzma (The Emperor's New Groove) = 19 Points

Kicking off the top 20 is the wonderfully outlandish Yzma from 'The Emperor's New Groove', one of only 2 characters from that movie to feature here and are both the villains, which is quite odd. But they do steal the show, especially Yzma whose clearly the highlight of the movie with her over the top design, eccentric and evil personality and she's just a delight to watch, especially in her interactions with her assistant Kronk, the pair clearly steal the show.

=20th Genie (Aladdin) = 19 Points

Here we have the wonderful Genie character voiced by the late Robin Williams, and honestly thought he would have been a lot higher on here, but oh well. Featured in one of Disney's (and my personal favourite) 'Aladdin'. He is a big part of the movie and instantly makes you smile with his over the top persona, many quips and he's easily the most memorable part of that movie. Due to the overwhelming response to him, he has been often imitated countless times through the years, and thanks to the big star casting. it lead the way for other big stars to do voice work in other animated features through the years, which just goes to show the lasting impact of the comedy legend Robin Williams has had on us through the years.

=20th Merryweather (Sleeping Beauty) = 19 Points

The 2nd most popular 'Sleeping Beauty' character here, I think we all know whose gonna be the most popular on here, but more on that later. Here we have 'Merryweather' whose one of the 3 fairy godmothers to Aurora, who appear to present gifts to her as well as becoming her guardians. 'Merryweather' is the youngest and shortest of the 3 and is definitely the most memorable out of the 3 who stands up to the wicked witch and is known her short temper, but has a kind heart and will do anything to protect the princess.

Posted by: SamJudd 2nd July 2016, 11:22 PM

45-41

45. The Three Caballeros // Avg.5.357

Highest Scores: 10: (Ultraviolence1989), Lowest Scores: 1: (HausofKubrick, Kylie Jackson)

We lose the final 2 of the package films in this section, and at #45 is 'The Three Caballeros", which was the only one of these movies to score a 10. Often cited as a follow up to 'Saludos Amigos', and in contrast to those other ones, the narrative here actually works: It's Donald Duck's birthday, and each of the gifts he receives, inspires a different seqment which is actually pretty inventive, but again like all the others during this troubled era, they're nowhere near up to the standards that Disney are known for, and I'd say only watch it, if you wanted to see all the animated features from 1 to 55, but otherwise skip it.

44. The Adventures Of Ichabod & Mr Toad // Avg. 5.666

Highest Scores: 9: (Ultraviolence1989), Lowest Scores; 3: (HausofKubrick)

At #44 is the last of package films to feature here is 'The Adventures Of Ichabod and Mr Toad', which is definitely the best out of the 6 films and this one features just 2 stories, 'The Wind In The Willows' & 'The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow', and while neither have any connection to each other, they're both really good stories, the first one has more of a lighthearted tone and the latter is a straightforward horror story with Ichabod getting chased by 'The Headless Horseman' which was well and truly scary and easily makes this story the most memorable of the 2, and you can also see that the animation was starting to improve at this point and after this Disney would be well and truly back on track.

43. The Sword In The Stone // Avg. 5.666

Highest Scores: 8: (AaronTM), Lowest Scores: 3/3.5 (Beatrix Kiddo, HausofKubrick, Kylie Jackson)

At #42 is 'The Sword In The Stone', which is the first of the Silver Age classics to drop here, and despite having the same average as 'TAOIAMT', this is higher due to it having more rates and therefore gaining a higher score. There have been many, many takes on the King Arthur/Merlin legends through the years and while they mainly focus on sword fights and etc, this one focuses more on the relationship of young Arthur and Merlin and while it is an interesting idea, but in this it tends to lack focus, with the main characters turning into various animals and the main theme of the sword in the stone only played a small part in this film and was just thrown in at the end without much thought, and seemed like it was just a quick way to end the movie. Although this movie wasn't all bad and did boast some fun moments, like Merlin's battle with Madam Mim which was highly enjoyable and Merlin himseld was a wonderfully quirky character and while this may not be one of Disney's best, it is an okay effort.

42. Treasure Planet // Avg. 5.875

Highest Scores: 8.5: (Qween), Lowest Scores: 2: (Beatrix Kiddo)

At #42 is 'Treasure Planet' which has a very interesting concept of taking the classic story 'Treasure Island' and setting it in outerspace and mixing the old with modern times is something quite unique, but not fully realized and the whole concept often gets muddled and just leaves you feeling confused. However I do like the fact that they used traditional 2D animation, against 3D computer generated backgrounds, which is simply beautiful to look at, and the movie does work best when it remains grounded and focuses on it's characters like for instance the relationship between Jim Hawkins and John Silver, where they do have a strong and powerful bond, but it's when they set off into space is where the story loses it's focus and instead gets too caught up in it's visuals and loses focus.

41. Oliver & Company // Avg. 5.909

Highest Scores: 9: (Jimmy Jam), Lowest Scores: 2: (HausofKubrick)

At #41 and just missing the top 40 is 'Oliver & Company', which is the first of the Dark Age Disney movies to feature here and takes a familiar story of 'Oliver Twist' and changes it to talking animals and updates the setting to modern times, which is something quite refreshing and Disney has done this many times throughout the years. But honestly I find the idea more interesting than the movie itself, while not terrible it's just uninspired with a weak story and while the voice acting is top notch especially Bette Midler and Billy Joel, I just felt the character of Fagan really bland and there's no real tension going on throughout. The musical numbers were also fun, but totally forgettable and the animation wasn't Disney's usual best with too many stale colours, so in all the movie does have some decent moments, just tends to drag in sections that prevents this from being enjoyable, well that's just my opinion.

Posted by: richie 3rd July 2016, 11:21 AM

Make Mine Music certainly shouldn't be last - the Peter and the Wolf segment alone is brilliant.

Posted by: SamJudd 4th July 2016, 07:57 PM

17th Iago (Aladdin) = 20 Points

Just missing out on becoming Buzzjack's favourite 'Aladdin' character by 1 point. Jafar's trusty sidekick with an extremely loud voice and personality, often overlooked especially at the time by 'The Genie', but he has seemed to won over more fans on here though with his wisecracks and just fun to be around.

=16th Jasmine (Aladdin) = 21 Points

The most popular 'Aladdin' character here is none other than the lovely Princess Jasmine and well deserved I must say and quite different to the Princess's that came before her, she was more strong willed and free spirited, and doesn't pine for a handsome prince to whisk her away (even though that does happen), but Jasmine definitely has an edge to her personality wise as well as being wonderfully designed with her beautiful features.

=16th Dumbo (Dumbo) = 21 Points

Here we have the wonderful 'Dumbo' the title character from the movie of the same name, despite no spoken dialogue he expresses so much pain with just his eyes and movement, and come on don't you just love that moment when he flies.

14th Ralph (Wreck It Ralph) = 22 Points

The last of the 'Wreck It Ralph' characters to feature here, and the highest is none other than Ralph himself whose labelled as a bad guy in his game of Fix It Felix and soon sets out to prove himself, his friendship Vanellope was one of his many turning points, a larger than life guy who literally carries the movie on his shoulders and voiced brilliantly by the great John C. Reilly.

13th Ariel (The Little Mermaid) = 24 Points

The most popular character from 'The Little Mermaid' is again the title character 'Ariel' the 8th Disney Princess to feature here. Fully realized female character who thinks and acts independently and instead of waiting for fate to run it's course she rebels, and yes she often makes mistakes, but that only makes her more human and definitely keeping up with the more modern attitudes.

40-37

40. Brother Bear // Avg. 6.066

Highest Scores: 10: (Regina, Cameron), Lowest Scores: 0: (Harry Ezra)

Kicking off the top 40 is 'Brother Bear', which means that we've lost 8 of the 11 Post Renaissance Disney movies, leaving only 3 left in the running. In many ways this is quite underrated and even though it's largely forgotten, it's still one of the more complex and intelligent Disney films to come out during the 00's and wedged between the 2 massive flops of 'Treasure Planet' & 'Home On The Range', this didn't do anything to restore faith. I did like the story line where a boy gets turned into a bear to teach him a lesson after he murders one that killed his brother is very thought provoking, especially when he befriends a young cub along his journey only for a brutal twist to happen which was easy to figure out, but was handled quite well. But on the downside there are faults with this, like having Phil Collins music poorly shoved into the movie, especially at what's supposed to be a heart breaking scene, just ruins the moment, and then there's the ending which was sweet just doesn't really didn't make that much sense, I thought the lesson was that man and bear was supposed to get along in harmony.

39. The Black Cauldron // Avg. 6.5

Highest Scores: 11: (Cameron), Lowest Scores: 5: (Chez Wombat, HausofKubrick, Qween, Kylie Jackson)

At #39 is 'The Black Cauldron', which was known for many years as Disney's greatest shame for being a commercial critical and box office failure and didn't get a release on video until 15 years after it came out in cinemas. The first movie here to gain a 11, but didn't gain any 10's and while average wise it is a big jump from 'BB', it's the multiple scores of 5 that prevented this from getting any higher. This is probably the most un-Disney film out of the bunch and the first and last time they tried the sword and sorcerey genre. It's very interesting to see them tackle something very dark, complex and mature, and the animation is very captivating and holds up well today, and the imagery is very gothic and just awesome, especially on the Horned King character. But personally what lets this down is the story and the characters which to say the least are lacking, the lead Taran just wasn't a strong lead and wasn't very likeable, as well as the other side characters who just hold your attention, and the fact that Disney tried to condense 2 books into one movie, just didn't hold well and while there are hints of a good movie here, sadly it could have used a bit more work.

38. Fantasia // Avg. 6.533

Highest Scores: 10: (Ultraviolence1989), Lowest Scores: 3: (Alex, HausoKubrick)

At #38 and coming as quite a surprise is 'Fantasia', not only that this is the first of the Golden Age classics to drop out this early, but honestly I thought that this would have been a lot higher, and if you look at other Disney classics countdowns, then normally this would be in the top 10. But obviously this isn't quite to Buzzjack's taste and I can see why in a way as it is very polarizing with no real plot or story and no dialogue, this is more about visuals and combining classical music with animation and while they do mix together well, it is more of an acquired taste and not for everybody I know, it's more for grown ups than the younger generation I'd say, and it is a beautiful and wonderful experience I must say and even at the time of release this wasn't loved, but through re-releases and re-evaluation, it does stand as a Disney classic, and was something Walt Disney really wanted to make himself and enjoy and represents his vision and innovation.

37. Basil The Great Mouse Detective // Avg. 6.727

Highest Scores: 9.5: (Regina), Lowest Scores; 2: (HausofKubrick)

At #37 and the last of this selection is 'Basil The Great Mouse Detective', another one that's often overlooked because it came just after the flop of 'The Black Cauldron' and just before the Disney Renaissance, but it's definitely worth a watch and while it may not be one of the best it's still really good, as it has all the right ingredients with an engaging storyline, great characters and I especially liked the idea of a Sherlock Holmes character of Basil being a mouse which was pretty inventive and interesting, and then we also have the brilliant villain Professor Ratigan voiced by the legendary Vincent Price who you can tell was loving every minute of voicing this character, he was just amazing. Not just that but the movie itself is just funny and captivating, with some really tense moments, like the clock tower scene which was just riveting and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

Nala/Piglet/Beast/Cinderella/Mickey/Snow White/Judy Hopps/Vanellope/Olaf/Alice etc are all inctedible wub.gif

Love The Three Caballeros and Home Of The Range of the films out so far, the latter is a massive guilt pleasure heart.gif Also adore Brother Bear!

Wish Meet The Robinsons was five places lower sick2.gif

Fantasia below the Black Cauldron?! Oh dear no, the former's a real classic (despite the slightly racist/sexist undertones that come through when watching it these days) and the animation and musical sequences are still absolute class and haven't really been equalled.

The Black Cauldron was amongst the weakest of Disney easily but it wasn't AWFUL and was ambitious, it just had very unlikable characters, what WAS awful was Chicken Little, very glad to see that so low down.

I adore The Black Cauldron and don't understand the hate. The Character development was a bit meh but overall the story was strong.

Gutted Chicken Little is out allready and so many characters I love Jasmine, Iago, Ariel etc so many I love tbh heart.gif

Posted by: richie 5th July 2016, 07:01 AM

I remember the Black Cauldron being out in the cinema - it looked fantastic due to Don Bluth on art duties and Gurgi was a cute character, but it just wasn't exciting. I've tried to watch it twice since and have never managed to get to the end.

I'm going to hold my tongue about the way BJers vote on Disney films - we've been through it at least twice before, and I didn't vote this time. I'm fully expecting my favourite Pinocchio to be way down the list.

=12th Anna (Frozen) = 25 Points

In joint 12th place and just finishing outside the top 10 along with the character below is Anna one of the main leads from 'Frozen', making her the 2nd most popular character from that movie here. Full of charm and enthusiasm, as well as loosely based on Gerda, from the original Hans Christian Anderson tale 'The Snow Queen', and so a lot of dedication and determination was put into her and it simply paid off, as Anna is definitely someone to root for on her quest and the relationship between her and Elsa was very important to the movie, and voiced by the lovely Kristen Bell with such pose and excellence, and wow she can really sing.

=12th Baloo (The Jungle Book) = 25 Points

And again just outside the top 10 along with 'Anna' is the loveable Baloo the bear from Disney's classic 'The Jungle Book', gaining points from 3 of the 6 voters who took part in this character rate. Laid back and far from responsibility, as well as becoming Mowgli's mentor and friend, Baloo is just someone who can always make you smile with his warm and friendly nature, but can be brave and fearless when faced with danger and who can forget that awesome classic tune 'The Bare Necessities' in which he sings, which everybody must know by now, and if you don't then you've been living under a rock for the past couple of decades.

Now there are just 10 characters left to come in this countdown and they are =

Bambi
Belle
Cruella De-Vil
Elsa
Maleficent
Mulan
Pocahontas
Simba
Ursula
Zazu

Any thoughts, any guesses.

36-34

36. Bolt // Avg. 6.733

Highest Scores: 9.5: (Harry Ezra), Lowest Scores: 3: (Regina, HausofKubrick)

At #36 is 'Bolt' which did score a fair amount of high scores, despite not gaining any 10's, instead managing a 9.5 and multiple 8's, which isn't bad, but did get some middling and lower scores that prevented it from gaining a higher average or position. The movie itself isn't bad, at the start you think it's gonna be another Sci-Fi adventure but the twist is that Bolt himself only thinks he's a superhero and doesn't realize that he's the star of a TV show, alongside his owner Penny. It's a pretty unique idea that does inspire a lot of humour, and also while there may be no real villain, just Bolt escaping into the real world and trying to find Penny, and their bond is one of the movie's highlights and plus along his journey he does get the usual Disney sidekicks Mittens an alley cat and Rhino the hamster, whose just really funny. The computer animation is definitely a lot better than they're previous outings (Chicken Little & Meet The Robinsons), and seems much more perfected, as well as being a much better film than those 2 as well, and after this Disney started getting back on their feet and started making classics again, starting a 2nd renaissance.

35. The Rescuers // Avg. 6.8

Highest Scores: 9: (bartsimpson), Lowest Scores: 3: (HausofKubrick)

At #35 we have 'The Rescuers' which was released during the Bronze (or Dark Age) of Disney films, and out of the 8 movies released during that era this was the most successful critically and financially. A likeable enough movie with it's excellent characters, mainly the duo of Bernard and Miss Bianca, 2 little mice from The Rescue Aid Society who travel the world to rescue a little orphan girl named Penny. Along with memorable characters such as albatross pilot Orville and the wonderfully over the top villain Madame Medusa (who was originally intended to be Cruella De-Vil), but instead became an original character. The movie does do a decent job of blending action, humour and heart together, along with a satisfying ending. On the whole it is enjoyable, but can be almost quite forgettable, but still good enough.

34. Winnie The Pooh (2011) // Avg. 7

Highest Scores: 10: (Jimmy Jam), Lowest Scores: 2: (HausofKubrick)

At #34 we have the 2nd Disney 'Winnie The Pooh' movie and the first of the 2nd Renaissance movies to drop here, coming after 'Tangled' and just before 'Wreck It Ralph', this kinda got lost inbetween and often forgotten, even on this rate it didn't gain that many scores, but the scores it did get were mainly positive apart from the single low score of 2. Coming 34 years after the original 'Winnie The Pooh' movie, which seems strange that they waited this long and really it's still more of the same, apart from the much improved animation which does look a lot better with a brighter colour scheme and more fluid movements, and yes I know this movie is designed to feel more like a throwback and the characters all remain the same as ever and if you like Winnie The Pooh and his friends, then you'll like this.

33-31

33. The Rescuers Down Under // Avg. 7

Highest Scores: 9: (Joe, SamJudd, Beatrix Kiddo), Lowest Scores: 1: (HausofKubrick)

At #33 is 'The Rescuers Down Under', the sequel to the 1977 original which bowed out 2 places below this. Honestly I'm glad that this one finished higher, but it is the first of the Disney Renaissance to drop out, wedged between 'The Little Mermaid' & 'Beauty and the Beast', this is sadly, the most forgotten of that era, despite being a million times better than it's predecessor in every possible way, such as stronger animation, more developed characters, and a much better adventure storyline, I mean just watch that opening with Cody and the Eagle, it's just as breathtaking as any of the Disney classics from that era. Okay it's probably not better remembered because of the time it came out and compared to some of those classics, this does fall a little short, but honestly it's still a brilliant movie and should be given another chance.

32. The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh // Avg. 7.107

Highest Scores: 10: (Jimmy Jam), Lowest Scores: 1: (HausofKubrick)

At #32 is the last of the Disney sequels to feature here 'The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh' which was the first Disney movie to feature this character. A nice little sweet movie that consists of 3 short stories stitched together with added material to help bridge the gaps. Anyone who grew up Winnie The Pooh and his friends Piglet and Eeyore, as well as Christopher Robin whose imagination created them all, and plus this was where we got introduced to the infamous Tigger who quickly becomes a staple of this world. Anyone who grew up with these characters will definitely get that nostalgia factor here and it does bring back those sweet memories of your childhood.

31. Hercules // Avg. 7.25

Highest Scores: 11: (Qween), 10: (Regina), Lowest Scores: 3: (Kylie Jackson)

Just outside the top 30 we lose another Renaissance era film and this time it's 'Hercules' . There have been many adaptations of this Greek Myth through the years, so it was no surprise that Disney decided to take a stab at it and okay it's not truly faithful (are any Disney adaptations), but it is an interesting one and mixing in Motown/Gospel into the soundtrack was a bit strange but it is quite fun, and the movie itself is a mixed bag and there is a lot to like and personally I found Hercules himself an interesting character, and Hades is just a hoot with his quick wit, then there's Megara who isn't the typical Disney Princess and is more snarky and quite layered. The animation in this isn't Disney's strongest however, personally find it a bit too cartoony and the CGI looks awkward and dated now, but we do get intense action scenes and some decent comedy, even if some of it do fall a bit flat. This did come towards the end of the decade where the later ones during this decade didn't live up to the standards to the earlier ones.

Posted by: richie 6th July 2016, 07:11 AM

Well, it's right that the original Winnie the Pooh stories are above the 21st century ones, but what both are doing below Hercules is anybody's guess.

100% agree with this. I honestly feel like it's the most underrated of everything in the rate, people seem more familiar with the original, but the second really is such a step up. And it was a huge talking point film at the time because it was one of the first (if not the first) animated feature film to experiment with computer graphics, which is why it was seen as breathtaking at the time, I remember my Dad raving about it at the time after having seen it in the cinema upon its release. Joanna is amazing too.

30. Pinocchio // Avg. 7.382

Highest Scores: 11: (Beatrix Kiddo), 10: (SamJudd, Ultraviolence1989)

Lowest Scores: -1: (Regina)

Box Office Gross: $84.2 Million
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100%

Right then I know I have been posting these results in groups, and up until we get down to the top 25, I will, it's just for this one I thought that it deserves it's own page. So here goes at #30 we have 'Pinocchio', which honestly deserves much, much higher than this and would rank in my personal top 10. It's hard to believe that this is 76 years old now and was only Walt Disney's 2nd feature length animated feature following 'Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs", which is even more impressive and just looks so timeless, with it's extensive attention to detail, flawless animation blended in with such live and vibrant colours. Despite being geared towards children, this doe feature adult themes and if anything it's a cautionary tale, like firstly telling a lie and then your nose growing is the least of Pinocchio's problems, especially on his journey which includes getting locked in a cage, transforming into a donkey and getting swallowed by a whale. All this is showed to us with frightening imagery and doesn't pull any punches, it's challenging and sometimes frightening, but that's what life is. The journey that Pinocchio goes through is incredible and he does learn some life lessons along the way, along with his trusty conscience Jiminy Cricket. Definitely one of the most epic films in the Disney canon, with such hard work and dedication put into it, you can tell that Walt Disney himself put his heart into this and it did pay off into such a wonderful masterpiece that's almost flawless, I know some people gets annoyed with the parts of the villain's and Pleasure Island not getting resolved, and what did happen to all those other boys who got turned into donkeys, but honestly in my opinion I would have liked to see a resolve for those situations, but that's kinda realistic of life in a way, that not every loose gets tied up and sometimes the bad guys do get away with it. Then there's the infamous song 'When You Wish Upon A Star', which has become a staple of the Disney brand ever since and so rightfully so as it's so magical and beautiful. The 100 rating on Rotten Tomatoes is spot on in my opinion as everything in this movie down to the story, the animation and the wonderful characters all do leave a lasting impression.

29. The Emperor's New Groove // Avg. 7.406

Highest Scores: 10: (SamJudd, Aaron TM), Lowest Scores: 3: (HausofKubrick)

Box Office Gross: $169,327,867 Rotten Tomatoes Score: 85%

At #29 is 'The Emperor's New Groove', seriously Buzzjack you ranked this higher than 'Pinocchio', come on. But anyway this is still a really good movie, and probably one of Disney's better ones from the 2000's. First of all this was conceived as a completely different movie to be titled 'Kingdom Of The Sun', which was gonna be an epic musical, with a score by Sting, but for whatever reasons that didn't happen and instead we get a buddy comedy about a spoiled Emperor turned into a llama and has to travel back to his kingdom with the help of peasant Pacha, and watching their relationship develop as the story proceeds was very entertaining, but of course it's the villain's who clearly steals the show here, with Yzma and her henchman Kronk who clearly gets most of the laughs and are definitely the standouts here, voice by the ever great Eartha Kitt and Patrick Warburton, they steal every scene their in and their parts were the best of the entire movie. Normally I'm not a fan of David Spade and personally find his movies awful, but here voicing the main character, he's very funny and does a decent job as does the always great John Goodman. This is one of those rare children's movies that are also funny for adults as well and despite not tackling any new ground, the characters and jokes are enough to keep you entertained throughout.

28. Robin Hood // Avg. 7.529

Highest Scores: 10: (Harry Ezra, Ultraviolence1989), Lowest Scores: 5: (Cameron, Beatrix Kiddo, Mike Sugafan)

Box Office Gross: $32,056,467 Rotten Tomatoes Score: 50%

At #28 is 'Robin Hood' which in recent years is probably more famous for recycling animated scenes from other Disney classics (Snow White, The Jungle Book & The Aristocats), I know the budget was really tight, and on the whole the animation itself still looks pretty decent and honestly does it affect your enjoyment of the film itself, well yes and no for that one. I find this one more of a mixed bag, however the stuff that does work in this, works well and it is a decent adaptation of the old Robin Hood stories, which have been made into movies and TV countless times, and the fact that they use all animals for the parts was really rather interesting and a smart move, and the songs are as catchy as ever, but I do find that this film is probably more enjoyable for kids more than anything, and while we do get some fun slapstick, some of it works some of it doesn't, for instance that extended football scene goes on for way too long and kinda feels out of place. However I did like the characters and they do make this whole thing work, like Prince John was just hilarious and his wacky side-kick Sir Hiss was a hoot (even though he was a recycled version of Kaa from Jungle Book), as well as Little John (whose basically same as Baloo the bear and even voiced by the same actor). Also the running time was way too short and the ending felt really rushed, for instance what happened to Maid Marion during the 3rd act, she seems to just disappear until the very end. In all this is still an okay film, not quite one of Disney's finest, but considering the problems they had, this could have been a hell of a lot worse, so it's not one of the best, nor it isn't one of the worst either, just somewhere in the middle.

27. Pocahontas // Avg. 7.676

Highest Scores: 11: (Alex), 10: (Jimmy Jam, Aaron TM), Lowest Scores: 5: (Chez Wombat, Qween, Kylie Jackson)

Box Office Gross: $347,100,000 Rotten Tomatoes Score: 56%

At #27 is 'Pocahontas', released during the Disney Renaissance era and critically wasn't as well received as the classics that came before it, and some might say that it started a downward spiral of quality as the later Disney films from the 2nd half of the era, wasn't as great as the ones from the first half. My opinion on this is that I don't find this all that great to be honest, yes there are some good points in this, like for instance it is beautiful with some of decades best animation and the music score is rather wonderful with the standout song being 'Colours Of The Wind' which is a standout moment with it's mixtures of beautiful colours and wonderful imagery. The story is overly simplistic and rather weak, and I know this has been criticized for being insensitive to Native Americans with it's questionable stereotypes. But even beyond that the movie itself just feels rather lifeless and while 'Pocahontas' herself is a decent heroine, everything and everybody else around her just disappoints. I know coming out after 'The Lion King', was a tough act to follow, but personally I find this my least of era.

26. Peter Pan // Avg. 7.705

Highest Scores: 11: (SamJudd), 9.5/9: (Jimmy Jam, Cameron, Alex, Harry Ezra, Ultraviolence1989, bartsimpson, Kylie Jackson), Lowest Scores; 4:(Chez Wombat)

Box Office Gross: $87,400,000 Rotten Tomatoes Score: 76%

At #26 is one of my personal favourite Disney movies 'Peter Pan', released during the Silver Age, and it still stands as one of Disney's iconic classics and was something Walt Disney himself had wanted to make much sooner, in fact if you watch 'Pinocchio' again, you can see in the background at the beginning a book of this and 'Alice In Wonderland', but due to the war happening and struggling to get the rights to the book, but finally after the success of 'Cinderella', he was allowed to make these classics again and what can I say, it's a truly wonderful experience. It's a simple story of Peter Pan taking Wendy and her brother to Neverland and there we get to see a world full of wonder and adventure, and everything is wonderfully animated with rich textures and colours, along with amazing set pieces. It's mixes action and comedy wonderfully and thanks to it's many great characters, such as the biggest Disney icon of them all 'Tinkerbell' and then there's the hilarious 'Captain Hook' the main villain of the piece and his battles with Pan and the crocodile are simply a delight. Okay there some are some flaws like that Indian song 'How To Make A Red Men Red' which yes it is really racist, but that's due to the time it came out, and that doesn't spoil it for me. So in all it's just a fun adventure movie that's a good time all round.

50. Meet The Robinsons // Avg.4.541

Such an under-rated film, I actually really like this, yeah ok its not a "classic" but I genuinely think its great

49. Dinosaur // Avg.4.571

I agree with your comments, I was impressed at first when ut came out but now its very "meh" visually and the story is kinda boring

48. Home On The Range // Avg.4.708

Terrible, Terrible Terrible, I don't understand how this was even allowed to be released

47. Atlantis: The Lost Empire // Avg.5.156

Really enjoyed this very different for them visually and I think it really pays off

46. Chicken Little // Avg.5.323

I like it but I always thought this was very trying to hard, and the humour is to dumbed down and screams to be liked by everyone especially kids, not clever humour that I'm used to with Disney at all

43. The Sword In The Stone // Avg. 5.666

This is one film as a kid I remember loving, especially the scene where the wizard and witch fight, love it, not much in the way of music or an "enemy" but such a good story overall.

42. Treasure Planet // Avg. 5.875

I'm not sure what I think about this, sometimes I think its to much about the visual but then I really enjoy it when I watch it, I really like the relationship between the main character and the main "villain"

41. Oliver & Company // Avg. 5.909

This is always a film I forget about, I know it did well but it does nothing for me, forgettable.

Posted by: Dannyboy 8th July 2016, 09:06 PM

40. Brother Bear // Avg. 6.066

The music makes this film for me, the story is typical Disney but I do think this has a very good mix of humour, music and genuine emotional storytelling, especially when he tell him what happened to his mother cry.gif

39. The Black Cauldron // Avg. 6.5

Vey few have seen this film and its a shame as it is an interesring film, very dark and stands out in a good way for me, its just not a "Disney" film

38. Fantasia // Avg. 6.533

I don't count this as a Disney film, visually appealing and great music but that's it

37. Basil The Great Mouse Detective // Avg. 6.727

Never been a fan, I do like the villain but that's pretty much it, I know its generally like but I just don't feel it

Posted by: Chez Wombat 8th July 2016, 09:12 PM

I've never really got Peter Pan, it may have stemmed from seeing the absolutely awful 2003 live action version of the film first but I've never been a fan of the general story - Peter is REALLY unlikeable for a start which always makes it hard to root for them as a hero (and the guy literally chopped Hook's hand off and tortured him so you can understand why he's angry laugh.gif), and I don't really like what he stands for as never growing up isn't really a positive thing so...I don't get how he works really, idk, I didn't think it worked as a film, even if it had it's moments.

Pinocchio is really one of the darkest Disney films and seemed so ahead of it's time for a film from the 1940s! It did seem more like a compilation film than a whole one what with all the different storylines and little closure, but those adventures were really great.

36. Bolt // Avg. 6.733

I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did, I liked the concept and all the secondary characters are great and genuinely funny

35. The Rescuers // Avg. 6.8

"meh" this and the sequel are just none events for me, its not terrible, it just don't stand out for me

33. The Rescuers Down Under // Avg. 7

I think I have watched it twice and each time I don't know why I did, out of all films to get a sequel, why this

31. Hercules // Avg. 7.25

Love this film, its so underrated, great story, humour, visual, music, villain, I can watch this over and over again

Posted by: Dannyboy 8th July 2016, 09:28 PM

30. Pinocchio // Avg. 7.382

One of many faultless Disney films, I remember the scenes where the boys turning into donkeys really freaking me out as a kid but its such a great film

29. The Emperor's New Groove // Avg. 7.406

Average, not keen on the music, the main character is just annoying, this film is saved by the two main "antagonists"

28. Robin Hood // Avg. 7.529

Another great classic film, a great take on a classic story, love the main antagonists again, they are usually better than the main characters in a lot of Disney films

27. Pocahontas // Avg. 7.676

Another film where I love the music, I just don't think the mix serious and comedy really worked here were I think it did in "hunchback"

26. Peter Pan // Avg. 7.705

Yet another film where the antagonist is the best part of the film, great film overall

Seems pretty linear to me - and what more closure is needed? It's all the darker for Stromboli, the Coach Man, Honest John and Gideon continuing their dark ways beyond the end of the film. They're all there to tempt other little boys. That's one of the best things about it - evil isn't punished by being vanquished for good, it's punished by Pinocchio rising above them and becoming real.

Pinnochio and Peter are far too low. I wouldn't have the former MUCH higher but it should probably be top 20. Peter Pan is magic and Robin Hood is a lot of fun.

25. Tarzan // Avg.7.735

Highest Scores: 10: (Regina)

Lowest Scores: 5: (HausofKubrick)

Box Office Gross: $448,191,819
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88%

From 25 onwards the rest of the results will be in single posts. So at #25 we have 'Tarzan', which came at the very end of the 90's and the 10th and final from the Disney Renaissance era. At the time this was Disney's most expensive animated feature costing $130 Million (although that would be surpassed by 'Treasure Planet' in 2002) and ended becoming a critical and financial success bringing in over $448.1 Million dollars worldwide. This was a very decent way to end such a magical era and surely it ended the decade with a bang with some of their best animation yet, with the jungle richly detailed and displayed with impressive depth, as well as Tarzan effortlessly swings from tree to tree was equally impressive, and using skateboarding legend Tony Hawks skateboarding as Tarzan's movements was a genius and perfectly captured. The Tarzan story has been done many times through the years, even having a live action version just released, and Disney does it wonderfully with it's story that veers into some dark places, even including some shocking displays of violence, but there are some tender moments to be had here, like the relationship between Tarzan and his adoptive mother Kala which is really touching, and even when Kerchack dies is a well and truly heartbreaking moment of the film, as the story goes on you do get to feel the special bond of these characters, and even Tarzan himself is complex, he's a person whose at odds with his surroundings, and not having to change yourself to fit in with those who don't understand you, which is a really important lesson. Even to this day it remains a breathtaking visual experience and even does a good job with the source material, and Phill Collins music is a decent fit 'You'll Be In My Heart' is a really nice tender song, and the only small criticism is that villain is really weak and just one note, but other than that 'Tarzan' is a well and truly stunning feature, with great voice work and superb animation and it's just a great watch and maybe with the new live action version coming out, people will look back and maybe check this one out.

24. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame // Avg. 7.823

Highest Scores: 10: (Qween)

Lowest Scores: 3: (Jimmy Jam)

Box Office Gross: $325,500,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 74%

At #24 is another Disney Renaissance era movie 'The Hunchback Of Notre Dame', making this 5th top drop and leaving 5 left in the running. This is definitely one of the more matured themed Disney movies and was certainly a brave choice, especially coming after the mixed reception of 'Pocahontas', but gladly this was a fascinating choice with gorgeous animation that is both breathtaking and captivating, with some of the finest music ever written for a Disney film. There are quite a lot of adult themes going on here, with some pretty shocking results, like the villain Judge Frollo flat out killing a woman at the beginning and about to kill her child (luckily he's stopped) and his creepy obsession with Esmerelda, especially as he's a religious figure, both of which are very adult themes and it's see nice to see Disney actually taking risks with this, especially with tragic figure Quasimodo the main character not quite getting the happily ever after ending even after the public humiliation and mocking he gets, which was something really different and quite original at the time, and okay I'd probably say that this is more for adults than kids, and the tone does feel a bit uneven at times, especially with the slapstick of the 3 gargoyles, which if they were imaginary would have been a whole lot more interesting and better, but no it turns out they're real, and especially at the end with the final battle where their part do feel out of the place. But in all this is a wonderful movie with some violent themes that may be a bit too upsetting for it's target audience, and feels that Disney is selling it to kids but aiming it at adults, pick one or the another I'd say. But still a remarkable achievement in film making and animation, and is something really worth remembering from this era of Disney with really great characters, score and brilliant and interesting story.

23. Dumbo // Avg. 7.911

Highest Scores: 11: (Chez Wombat), 10: (Ultraviolence1989)

Lowest Scores: 4: (Regina)

Box Office Gross: $1,600,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97%

At #23 we have the ever loveable 'Dumbo', which was only made to recoup Disney's losses because "Fantastia", and was originally gonna be a labelled a B-Movie, because of it's really short running time, at just over an hour, but thankfully that didn't happen and it got properly released and made a profit, which surprisingly enough out of the early Golden Age Classics only this and 'Snow White", actually made a profit during their original releases, probably due to the war and the movies not getting released internationally at the time, but due to several re-releases through the years, each of them has now made an healthy profit, although the only figure I could find for 'Dumbo' was it's original release. Anyway the movie itself is very simplistic and makes the most out of it's short running time, and even now it is fondly remembered even after 70 years. Although not as richly animated as the ones that came before it, due to budget restrictions, but still nice enough and the watercolor effect is really pleasant and works really well here. The plot is also very simple with Dumbo born with extra large ears and getting teased and mocked, until he finds out that he has a hidden talent. It's still a very effective tale and the most tender moment is when Dumbo's mother cradling him with her trunk and singing 'Baby Mine' through the bars of her cage, which is very sad but very moving also, and the fact that Dumbo has no line of dialogue, expresses everything through the pain and joy in his eyes. Another highlight is the friendship between him and Timothy Q the mouse whose the real hero of the movie, due to him standing up for his friend and watching them bond together is really sweet and offers Dumbo himself some much needed kindness after his mother is locked away. Also the 'Pink Elephants On Parade' sequence which is really weird, but still fascinating, and even Disney with a low budget can inject a bit of artistic vision to it and okay I know the ending is kinda predictable, but come on don't tell me that none of you cheered when Dumbo flies and gets back at all the people who mocked, it's a well deserved moment in the film, and makes your heart soar with joy. I think I probably have to address the elephant in the room (pardon the pun), I know everybody finds the black crows racist, but that's just a product of the time the movie came out, and honestly I don't mind them and doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the film itself. On the whole the movie is just a very unique and simple, but effective tale with a lot of heart put into it, and even now to this day it stands as one of Disney's fondly remembered and best loved features.

How can anyone not love this film, the part where dumbo goes to see his mother in the trailer

The pink elephants is just fooked up but I love it

The elephants pickin on dumbo always makes me angry

I do love this film, classic

22. The Aristocats // Avg. 7.941

Highest Scores: 10: (Cameron, Ultraviolence1989)

Lowest Scores: 5: (Mike Sugafan)

Box Office Gross: $55,675,257
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 66%

At #22 is 'The Aristocats', which was the last movie that Walt Disney himself had any input on, and was the first released after his death. It's a pretty likeable and charming story with cat Duchess and her 3 kittens, along with stray Thomas O'Malley who are all decent and likeable characters. The animation has a deliberate line drawn feel that allows the cats to be more expressive, and it does work here and it does give the whole thing a classy look. But beyond it's charm, it's not very memorable and just doesn't stand out amongst far better animal themed films that came before it ("101 Dalmatians" & "Lady and the Tramp"). It also involves a very unpleasant notion of someone trying to kill a bunch of defenceless animals, which has already been done and the fact that the kittens don't act all that concerned about their situation, which is really quite startling and for me just doesn't get you invested into their predicament, therefore lacking any real tension. The musical numbers are quite fun here especially "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat", which is the definitely the most memorable, but on the whole Disney have had far better. This whole movie while it's nice and charming, just lacks that wow factor for me and often feels kinda lazy in so many places, but with decent and likeable characters it does lift things up a bit, although not one of my personal fave Disney films, it's harmless enough.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 11th July 2016, 03:51 PM

How can Dumbo be as low as 23rd? sad.gif Such a classic, it's simplicity really is it's strength and for a film so short, it's got a hell of an emotional journey - from the total heartbreak at Dumbo and his mum being separated and him becoming a clown to the weirdness of the pink elephants sequence to the triumph at him ACTUALLY flying and getting back at them all, it's the model of a perfect Disney film wub.gif (and not just cos baby animal films always get to me).

The Aristocats isn't a classic as you say, I think I only hold it as special as it's another one that was a big part of my childhood and whose lines I can recite.

Lowest Scores: 5/5.5: (Joe, Bartsimpson)

Box Office Gross: $63,500,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 69%

Just outside the top 20 is the last of the Bronze/Dark Age Disney movies at #21 is 'The Fox and the Hound', which did score the same points and average as "The Aristocats", but this is placed higher due to getting more 10's. This is also the second era of Disney films we say goodbye to following The Package Era. This is definitely one of Disney's more bleaker offerings and yes it certainly has it's fans, especially on here. The story here focuses on 2 young companions Tod the Fox and Copper the Hound who becomes friends, despite their species being natural enemies, and that aspect of the story is really sweet as their bond grows, but Copper's owner takes him away for the winter, and the next time we see them their all grown up and cannot be friends anymore. This is another mixed mag offering for me, while the movie is very well made with some decent animation, I just find it's message laid on a bit too thick and way too depressing which does get boring really fast, not a lot happens during the middle half of the movie and apart from the tense final showdown with Tod, Copper and the Bear, there's nothing really that memorable about it. Like I said the bear scene is quite scary and packed with a lot of action and thrills. But at the end of the day while the movie does look great, most of the characters are way too underdeveloped and just not interesting enough to keep you invested.

10th Zazu (The Lion King) = 28 Points

Starting off the top 10 characters is 'Zazu', who is the 6th Lion King character to feature here, despite only gaining points from 2 voters, but both were very high ones. His breed is a red-billed hornbill and acts as an majordomo to Mufasa and later Simba, and voiced greatly by the legendary Rowan Atkinson. Quite a funny character very uptight and dignified, as well as being very nervous and panics in emergencies, but has a sharp wit to him and does make for a memorable character in this movie.

=09th Pocahontas (Pocahontas) = 29 Points

The only character from 'Pocahontas' to feature here is the title character herself, whose very striking and beautiful, while at the same time being very strong willed and adventurous and that's all the great ingredients you need for a great character.

=09th Ursula The Sea Witch (The Little Mermaid) = 29 Points

Whoops I was wrong earlier guys when I said that Ariel was the most popular character from 'The Little Mermaid' it's actually 'Ursula' whose the most popular, Her character was largely expanded upon from the original story and gladly so as she's definitely one of Disney's greatest villains, delightfully evil and way over the top camp, just makes her all the more fun to watch, funnily enough she was actually based upon the late drag performer Divine, and well she is just fun to watch and easily steals every scene she's in.

=09th Bambi (Bambi) = 29 Points

The last of this bunch we have 'Bambi", the title character from the film of the same name, under the guidance of his mother he learns the wonder of nature and the power of friendship and family, and watching him through his journey is very powerful as well as moving. Although he himself is not strongly characterized, he is full of charm with those wide adorable eyes and general good nature to him, and when he grows up he does mature into a noble but still kind and decent deer.

Lowest Scores: 6: (Mike Sugafan, Qween)

Box Office Gross: $205,843,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score; 86%

Starting off our top 20 is the ever wonderful 'The Jungle Book' which was the last ever movie Walt Disney himself produced before he died in 1966, therefore not seeing the final product, which is very sad, but made one hell of a masterpiece and this also marks the end of The Silver Age era of Disney films. This is one of my all time favourite movies and even watching again as an adult it's just as bright and colourful as I remember. It also offers a lot of what Disney does best by blending realistic tones with cartoonish style, the darkness of the jungle with a lighthearted tone, with simple storytelling as we follow a young boy Mowgli who was left stranded in the jungle as a baby and then raised by wolves, but the fearsome Shere Kahn is coming back to the jungle, so it's time for Mowgli to be taken back to the man village by Bagherra so he would be safe, and along the way meet a selection of interesting characters who each have they're own distinct personality's. Everything about this movie works so well with it's excellent sharp writing that's both tender and funny at the same time along with some fantastic songs produced by the legendary Sherman Brothers with classics like "The Bare Necessities" & "I Wanna Be Like You", that will get stuck in your head and are just a load of fun and enjoyable, then there's the amazing characters like I already said that really makes everything work so well, "Baloo" with his fun laid back nature, the stern and serious 'Bagheera" the panther, 'Kaa' the snake was just hilarious, 'King Louie' whose just full of charm and finally there's Shere Kahn a delightfully evil Tiger whose just fabulous. Honestly there is just nothing bad I could say about this, it's just a great and timeless classic.

Aristocats I would actually say is one of the worst Disney films, its just boring, not a fan at all.

I love Fox and the hound "I'm a hound dog oooooooooo" love it

Controversial to say but I'm not that much of a fan of "jungle book" I don't hate it or anything but I wouldn't choose to watch it if I had to pick a classic Disney film, then again I feel the same way about "snow white" and "lady and the tramp"

It seems that I made a slight error with the #18 & #19 positions, it's this which is at #19 and 'LATT' as actually at #18, so sorry for the mix up, the other movie will be in the next post. So at #19 is 'The Princess and the Frog', which marked a return to 2D animation since 2004 and started a whole new era of Disney Classics, titled the Revival era and YES and just like the Renaissance of 89-99, this put Disney back on track yet again, following almost a decade of underwhelming movies and while this may have not been the box office smash it should have been, it set them back on the right track and finally we get a movie that actually feels like Disney with a strong story, beautiful animation and great music. I mean everything in this is just a joy to watch, and not only that it's just so positive and teaches a great lesson on hard work and the right kind of dreams. I really liked the New Orleans setting, which is so rich and full of colour and the Jazz music was a really good fit. The characters in this were fantastic along with excellent voice work, Tiana is a totally welcomed addition to the Disney Princess line-up, so strong, independent and hard working and doesn't feel like a rehash of past characters at all, she' was very grounded and real, and the fact that we have an almost all African American cast was a really interesting idea. Other characters such as Prince Naveen was a hoot and Louis the trumpet playing alligator was really interesting and funny, then there's Charlotte whose just so fun and likeable, and could have easily been an annoying side character in a lesser film, but in this she's just a hoot. Okay while this may not be quite on the same level as some of the movies that came after such as (Tangled, Wreck It Ralph & Frozen), it's still miles better than anything they've done in the 10 years before this, and while at times there could be way too much going on like the Voodoo subplot wasn't fully fleshed out, then Dr Facilier needing the Prince's blood too look like him & the leads falling in love didn't seem that natural to me, kinda felt a bit forced, but those are only small things and doesn't stop my enjoyment of this whatsoever, it's a really great movie and a welcomed return to Disney's 2D animation and I'm just so glad they're making quality movies again.

Lowest Scores: 6.5/6: (Joe, HausofKubrick)

Box Office Gross: $93,600,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%

At #18 is 'Lady and the Tramp', released in 1955 and was the 15th film in the 'Walt Disney Animated Classics series'. It's a rather charming and tale of twito dogs, the upper class 'Lady' and the scrappy 'Tramp' falling in love, while very simple, but everything is done very well with such beautiful animation, where the dogs movements and expressions are shown in so much detail which looks very authentic and you can tell that the Disney creators put a lot of hard work and effort into this, they even studied the real thing by bringing several different breeds of dogs and studied everything about them, and it definitely pays off as even now it still looks amazing, even the backgrounds are stunning and very picturesque and gorgeous with a beautiful colour palette. Not only that but the characters, the leads 'Lady' and 'Tramp' are very likeable and charming, and you really root for their romance to progress, and even the supporting characters 'Trusty' and 'Jock' are great and hilarious and each of them are well developed with such excellent voice work and the Jazz soundtrack really fits this movie well, and who can forget that famous 'Bella Note' scene, in which the dogs are serenaded while sharing a plate of spaghetti and meatballs, and then almost kiss, I mean how can you not remember or like that scene, it's just beautiful and so very romantic. So on the whole it's a simple story, but told very effectively , and okay there may be that one questionable and somewhat racist scene with the Siamese cats, but that's just Hollywood in the 1950's and doesn't take away any enjoyment from the movie itself and they do get a creepy villain song and then you don't see much of them for the rest of the movie, and apart from them there is no real villain in this, well you can call that horrible looking rat at the end a bad guy, but that's more of a plot device. So my final thoughts are that this is a really decent and well done movie that's beautiful and very cute to look at and watch and enjoy.

Lowest Scores: 6.5: (Harry Ezra)

Box Office Gross: $245,800,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 78%

At #17 we lose the last of yet another era of Disney films, namely 'The Post Renaissance' era, and considering the last time we saw one of these was at #29, this is rather good going. 'Lilo & Stitch' which gained a lot of high scores here, and was the biggest Disney movie of the 2000's, financially and critically. It's always interesting seeing Disney tackle different cultures, and with this it's the Hawaiian setting because of it's spirit of family, which fits in perfectly with the theme of the movie with it's unique watercolour styled animation and characters that are curvy, which makes a pleasant change I think. This is also definitely one of the more mature themed Disney movies, which tackles issues such as foster care and accepting others for who or what they are which is handled really well in this. Don't get me wrong it isn't all serious though there is fun to be had also to keep the younger audience entertained, especially Stitch's antics and the image of him and Lilo dancing in hula skirts was extremely heart warming and funny at the same time, as well as Stitch's other antics. For me personally though I find the stuff that work best in this are the 2 sisters Lilo and Nani whose parents have passed on and are forced to try and make their broken family work is really well handled, they fight and make up, but have a really close sisterly bond, as Nani is basically Lilo's mother now, but their relationship felt real and wouldn't change any of those scenes at all. Lilo herself is a great character with her strange quirks and behaviour which makes her a real person, and Stitch the alien was quite fun, although kinda annoying at times, but I suppose that was kinda the point. I also loved the music both Hawaiian and the great Elvis Presley, which really fits this movie perfectly and on the whole I really liked the focus on families and frankly up until this decade this felt like the last truly big Disney movie as they would struggle for several years after this, but thankfully they have pulled themselves out of it and are making classics again.

Box Office Gross: $5,232,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 79%

At #16 is 'Alice In Wonderland' which managed the same average as 'L&S', this is higher due to it getting a bigger score, due to more scores. This has to be one of Disney's most interesting animations, even though it's based on a book by Lewis Carroll and there have been a lot of adaptations of it, even as recent as this year with 'Alice Through The Looking Glass' and the 2010 Tim Burton movie of the same title. But this one is probably the most well known and in my opinion the best one and feels very original, despite being a product of it's time. There's a lot going on all at once, it's very manic and full of strangeness, so taking a lot of risks that all of which pays off, and somehow all of this works. Even though the author deserves the credit for creating these characters, but here they're fully realized, The Cheshire Cat, The Mad Hatter & The Queen Of Hearts are all fantastic and remain some of Disney's most memorable characters. The animation even to this day still remains striking with it's bright bold colours and interesting shapes that gives this world a life of it's own. Even to this day this movie remains truly unique and special, it's not you're typical storytelling, but that's the beauty of it all, totally one of a kind and ahead of it's time and just craziness around every corner, all of which is told in such beautiful visuals, which honestly was missing from the Tim Burton version which was very dark and murky, and relied too much on exposition and visuals to tell the story and totally misses the point of it all. At the time there were plans for Disney to adapt all of Lewis Carroll's Alice novels, but due to the underperformance of this, it sadly never happened, as it would have been really interesting too see what Disney animators would have done with them, but oh well. This did however get more praise as the years went on and eventually became a success critically and commercially. All of which is much well deserved and still to this day this remains one of my all time favourite Disney animated classics.

Lowest Scores: 4: (Regina)

Box Office Gross: $268,000,000
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%

At #15 we have the loveable 'Bambi', and what everybody remembers most about this film...is that of course Bambi's mother dies, and yes that was very sad and traumatic and scarred millions of us throughout the years. But other than that it is a very beautiful film, yes it's very simple and doesn't have much of a plot, but that's the beauty of it all, it's just very special and more of an experience than anything else. We get too see Bambi's feelings of painful loss, excitement of true love, the joy of rebirth, we even get to see the title character grow from youth to adulthood along with his friends Thumper and Flower. It handles all this with an artistic approach with beautiful backdrops with very striking colours that are also used to show character's emotions and there is just so much attention paid to the detailed forest and it's layers and the lighting for each of these scenes. The music score is also of worthy note here, occasionally haunting in some parts, while soft and beautiful in other scenes, all of which fits every scene perfectly. The most important scene is yes like I already mentioned is Bambi's mother dying and the fact that it was offscreen and we don't get to see who it was, is still just as tragic and powerful and I think that everyone of us who watched it as a kid learned a very important lesson about the loss of innocence and that even 'Man' is capable of evil things. So yes in my opinion 'Bambi' is a very decent Disney movie, full of artistic imagery and cute characters, while it may be thin on story, it's still a beautiful artpiece with great music, as well as an important movie in the Disney Animation Features collection, and if you have a collection of these movies, then you should definitely own this, for the experience more than anything.

At #14 is the magnificent 'Cinderella' which kickstarted another glorious era of Disney movies, coming after the forced and dreaded 'Package Era' of films, this is what's known as the 'Silver Age' Era and showed what Disney could do. We should also be grateful for this classic because if this wasn't a success, then we wouldn't have had anymore animated features, as the Disney animated studios were 4 Million in debt and this cost 3 Million to make, and if this had flopped then Disney would have went bankrupt. Now that the war was over Walt Disney decided to go back to basics by adapting a fairytale, like he did with Snow White, and thankfully all the risks paid off and this became an instant much loved classic. This is a prime example of what magic Disney can do by telling a complete story with memorable characters and brilliant songs. This is also very beautiful to look at, with very extensive detailed designs of the castle and the other backgrounds, which are so rich in detail and design, with wonderful colourings, and even the human characters look great with such fluid movements. The story itself is very romantic and is something that everybody knows, the idea of love at first sight really works here in it's romantic setting. Like I said the characters are great, Cinderella herself is a good person who never lets anything get her down and fully deserves her happy ending, Lady Tremaine whose wickedly evil as the wicked stepmother and just fantastic, especially in her design and definitely ranks as one of Disney's best and most memorable villain's. The Fairy Godmother who only appears briefly, but is definitely one of the most important characters in this story, is just so sweet, warm, funny and just magical, all helped by her impressive vocal performance. Even the side characters the mice who I know a lot of people don't like, but they are memorable and are really cute and good friends to Cinderella, especially Gus Gus. If there is any complaint about this is that there is a tad too much time spent on the side characters and the Prince doesn't seem to have any character at all, but honestly that doesn't stop my enjoyment of this as it is a wonderful classic and it's a story that many of us has endured for so long, with great music, lovely animation and terrific characters and in all 'Cinderella' fully deserves it's place as one of Disney's Animated Classics and personally I just love it.

At #13 we have 'Aladdin' which is probably my all time favourite Disney Animated Classics, I remember going to the cinema as a kid and seeing this on the big screen and it was just a wonderful experience, and has remained a firm fave of mine ever since. Coming out during the magical Disney Renaissance era, which was definitely their peak period and sandwiched between Beauty and the Beast & The Lion King, and while it may not be on the epic level of those movies, it still holds up very well and is probably one of Disney's funniest comedies and that was in large part thanks to Robin Williams fantastic voice work on The Genie which largely showcases his talents as an exceptional performer and his passing was a well and truly sad moment in our lives and without him then this movie wouldn't have been the classic that it is and this will always be a reminder of his amazing and wonderful talents. The animation is still very wonderful to look at with it's uses of blue to convey good and red to convey evil is really rather interesting, and okay some of the CGI may look a bit corny, but that's just a product of it's time and really doesn't take you out of the moment or enjoyment of this movie whatsoever. The story as a whole is smart and very funny with retelling an ancient Arab folklore with a more modern sensibility is really interesting and the way we get introduced to the main character himself Aladdin is great, he is definitely one the best characters in this movie as well as Princess Jasmine whose very likeable as well as stunning, but also strong willed and determined, and together they have great chemistry, especially in that scene with the magic carpet singing A Whole New World, which is just wonderful and one of Disney's best songs. Then there's the villain Jafar whose so brilliant and camp and his sidekick parrot Iago whose also hilarious. So on the whole this movie really does hold up well with comedy that's still funny now as it was then, and some really entertaining action scenes, along with some nice messages, great songs and there is just genuine heart to the whole thing, it's just a great movie and a well deserved Disney classic.

At #12 and probably coming as a big surprise to many is the phenomenon 'Frozen', and well what can I say about this, that hasn't been said before. Well for a start if you love it or hate it, it really doesn't matter this was big, I mean BIG, it totally blew up in a way that nobody ever expected, I remember during the 90's when The Lion King, became such a cultural icon, but this just basically blew that out of the water with it's status.. I've never seen anything like it (for a Disney film), this just became such a talking point with everybody, even people who didn't see it, this just resonated with so many people on such different levels, it was more of an experience than anything else. Does this deserve all the hype and glory or is it overrated...Well I have to day I love it and of course something this huge will have it's share of haters, but that's expected, you can't please everyone. This movie is just so great and ticks every box possible, the set designs, the backdrops and story are all amazing and fascinating, everything was just so beautifully animated and wonderful to look at. The characters are just as iconic and are what really makes this whole thing work, Elsa a strong willed and independent, her fear of hurting people with her power and wanting to shut herself away, really spoke to people and you really do feel her pain, she's alone and free at the same time, I can see why everybody loved this character. Then there's her sister Anna who in some ways is polar opposite to her sister, she is more energetic, believing in love at first sight, longing to be free, but she is also really complex, brave and together with Elsa, they make the perfect team. Olaf The Snowman, who is the fun side character, the comic relief you might say, with the right amount of balance of comedy and heart, he is just a terrific character. The ever loveable Kristoff the kind of character whose allowed to be who he is, he is just fantastic, witty and has great chemistry with Anna, and then finally there's Hans whose the unlikely villain, but of course doesn't start out that way, he comes across as very likeable and charming, until his true intentions are revealed and that does add more layers to him, as it was a genuinely surprising moment and very effective. Then there's the songs, they are just so beautiful and memorable, Let It Go was a well and truly powerful and beautiful moment in the film, and everybody remembers that scene which made everybody sit up and take notice of Elsa's pain, I know most people are probably sick of that song due to it being played to death, but you have to admit that Idina Menzel's vocals does make the whole thing more powerful. In fact all of the songs in this are well written and fantastically performed. The final moments of this movie is what really takes you by surprise, while the romance and true love angle is still there, however it's the true love between sisters is what the message is all about here, and it does an excellent job of showing the power of each kind of love has and that final scene between the sisters was a welcomed surprise, and really quite refreshing. On the whole, yes this movie has been overexposed, but what an impact it had, I can't remember the last time, a movie had everybody talking about it like this had, everything in this movie just works perfectly and it well and truly deserves it's iconic status.

I still think this is a good but not great film saved by great music. Tangled was soooooooooo much better than this.

Posted by: mdh 31st July 2016, 01:58 PM

About a month late but Baymax is 56 places too low. Complete injustice cry.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat 31st July 2016, 02:47 PM

That position is right for Frozen, it's a good film and generally progressive in terms of themes and portrayal of females so it's hype was a good thing, but outside of that, it lacks the sense of humour and slight 'edge' that the better Disney films have.

That said, Aladdin that low is ridiculous, it's everything brilliant in a Disney film and a deserved classic and Bambi...I can't say too much as I just cry thinking about THAT SCENE cry.gif

Agree with Chez, A bit baffled by that Aladdin placement...You need to re-watch it Sam!

Just outside the top 10 is the one that started it all 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs', which also means that we lose the last of the Golden Age Era of Disney movies in this countdown. This was also the first ever feature length animated movie released way back in 1937 and was a big risk, but which paid off when it became the highest grossing movie of the year and still to this day is much loved. But how does it hold up after all these years...well I'd have to say really well actually with a story that's familiar enough and I guess pretty much everybody knows how this story goes, it's quite simple but very much effective. Even the animation doesn't seem too outdated considering it's nearly 80 years old, it's very artistic, the castle and landscapes look like beautiful paintings, as well as the forest which by day beautiful and green, then at night full of dark and scary images, the movements of the characters may not be as fluid as later Disney films, but it was their first attempt, which is still pretty impressive. Definite standout moments includes the evil Queen's transformation into the old hag was truly frightening, especially for small children, and Snow White getting lost in the woods which is very dramatic and perfectly illustrated by it's effective score. The characters are very memorable here with the 7 dwarfs being so loveable and each displaying different characteristics, their work song Heigh-Ho is still as catchy and wonderful to this day as it's always been and The Evil Queen whose so obsessed with beauty and vanity, despite being the Queen of the castle, she's just excellent with her very striking image and cold and cruel demeanour. Snow White herself is while very nice and beautiful doesn't have much character to her, that's due to being a product of the time, but her presence is very classy and just the way she is with her surroundings and the way she interacts with the dwarfs, she is just someone with a big heart, and her bond with the dwarfs is very genuine. The weaker aspect of this though is the relationship between Snow White and The Prince which is pretty non-existent , as he is given no name and only has 2 scenes and basically he's only there to kiss Snow White at the end. The funeral scene towards the end was very heartbreaking with each of the dwarfs in tears was very upsetting and moving, even though you know things are gonna be alright in the end, it's still a heartwrenching scene. On the whole whether you may like it or not, it's still a classic and a landmark of achievement in animation and if it wasn't for this, then we wouldn't have had any of the other classics that followed this through the years and this is a definite must for any fans of Disney animations and a very important movie in the Walt Disney collection.

Kicking off the top 10 in such wonderful style is 'Tangled' which like 'The Princess and the Frog' & 'Frozen', takes a traditional fairy tale, in this case it's Rapunzel and subverts it, I know Disney has done this countless times in the past as well, but I still think it's great that we're still getting Disney Princess's for a new generation to enjoy. Also I think that this is Disney's first attempt at a romantic comedy, and that's what I love about it, the opposites attract, romantic banter, witty dialogue and terrific characters, therefore ticking all the right boxes. I think a lot of what makes 'Tangled' work is the solid production by not only updating a traditional fairy tale, but making it appealing to both girls and boys with the romantic elements mixed with a healthy dose of action and adventure which makes all the choices they made to this a much stronger overall feature. When we're introduced to the character of Rapunzel we're quickly feel a connection to her with the song 'When Will My Life Begin' which has a ton of narrative as well as being a memorable and beautifully sung song, she does her best to be optimistic and hopeful while basically being a prisoner, she's a very likeable and smart person and instantly we want her to succeed. Then there's the awesome Flynn Ryder the romantic lead and we get to see a lot of him as he also narrates the story, he's so suave and rogueish, but with a really good heart, and he pulls it off really well, making his relationship with Rapunzel a definite highlight of the movie, they have so much chemistry and spark between them it sizzles. The villain Mother Gothel whose just wonderful using her role as the mother to manipulate Rapunzel, making her all so twisted and just brilliant with such wicked humour, I would definitely rank her as one of Disney's greatest villains. Even the side characters are a delight including Maximus the horse who is just hilarious and not having a voice was a smart decision as he displays so much personality in facial expressions than words ever could. The animation in this is just stunning especially the lanterns scene which was just so beautiful and breathtaking. So on the whole I don't think there's anything bad I could say about this movie, everything just works so well here the story is strong, the music is great and the characters are fantastic, I would definitely rank this as one of my all-time favourite Disney movies and a well deserved top 10 placing on here.

Lowest Scores: 5: (HausofKubrick)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92%

At #9 we have 'Sleeping Beauty' which does earn a well deserved respectable position on this countdown with several high scores consisting of 4 11's & 5 10's, as well as a few 9's and 8's. Like so many of Walt Disney's animated features post 'Snow White' this was yet another failure on it's original release, and again like all the others gained a lot more love and respect many years later, but in this case though it would be the last Princess themed feature for 30 years. Which was such a shame as this was one of his most visually stunning movies he's ever done with it's medieval artwork look with such interesting and beautiful layers and with such elaborate backdrops that are richly coloured and textured. Apart from just being beautiful to look at the story and the characters are very interesting and yes some things in this movie doesn't quite work like the Kings drinking scene was very pointless and the woodland animals doesn't quite gel, and okay Aurora herself may be a little bland and the only memorable thing she does in the story is sleep, but isn't that kinda the point, I mean the movie is called 'Sleeping Beauty' after all and anyway she is very beautiful and definitely ranks as one of Disney's most beautifully designed Princesses. We also get some great action scenes as well along with a fantastic villain who really pushes the characters to their limits and all results in a very thrilling final climax. Obviously the most memorable of these characters is the villain Maleficent whose just very entertaining with such a commanding presence and just steals every scene she's in. The three fairies Flora, Fauna and Merryweather are pretty well fleshed out for side characters, they each bring something to the story and they are really funny together and just loveable. Then there's Prince Phillip who was the first Prince to be given any sort of character and the fact that we get to see more of him really works well, he shows many sides to his personality he's sweet, romantic and strong as well as courageous, and he does play a large part in the story itself. So on the whole 'Sleeping Beauty' is a wonderful movie with such interesting story telling that flows at a decent pace and visually it's one of Disney's strongest and greatest movies.

At #8 and coming in as a total surprise 'Zootopia', which despite not gaining any 11's, manages a very decent position in the top 10. If it was based on scores, then this would have been a lot lower, due to it not getting that many rates, but the scores it did get were really high and therefore managed a healthy average of 9. Given the fact that this movie is so recent, also makes it quite a feat, I was expecting this to be around top 30 personally and while I do like this movie it is great and everything, I just feel that it's placing here is a tad bit high, especially given that it's only 6 months old. I have watched this movie twice now, on my first viewing I did like it and on my 2nd viewing I enjoyed it even more as it is a real gem of a movie with an interesting plot and an intriguing mystery that keeps you glued to the screen the entire time and it manages to weave together emotion, comedy and beautiful visuals really well. As well as tackling some serious issues such as tolerance, hatred, racism, fear and bullying with such effectiveness and never gets too preachy or heavy handed with it's message and using an all animal cast and world was very interesting, and I know Disney has done this many times before, but here it really works well within the context within' the story. It's also remarkable how likeable the characters are with Judy Hopps fast becoming a firm all-time fave of mine with her spirit and never giving up on her dreams and willing to go that extra mile, and Nick Wilde the fox is slick, sarcastic and sweet in his own way and the two of them together make an excellent team and have such amazing chemistry together. Like I already said the visuals are stunning and the world building is just so inventive and remarkable. So on the whole yes 'Zooptopia' is a great movie and well deserved it's massive success at the box office and can see why it's critically acclaimed.

Big Hero 6 and Zootropolis are among the best animated films of the 21st century. There's a really good balance between humour, character, story and the all important cuteness. It's also good to see them embracing contemporary life again (albeit stretching the imagination) instead of raiding classic storybooks.

Disney hasn't been this good since Walt died.

At #7 we have 'Wreck It Ralph' which in itself has such an interesting and brilliant concept: An arcade villain who dreams of becoming an hero and travels to other games in his quest for glory. Plus we get a few cameos of other well known arcade game characters such as Pacman, Sonic & Bowser. It's an hilarious and sharp witted look at video games and taking the 'Toy Story' concept of what happens when the lights go out and the humans go home. There are 4 main worlds in this movie, such as Ralph's traditional 80's arcade world, Hero's Duty which is a Halo type world and Sugar Rush which is a play on a gam called Sugar Crush, then there's the train depot which connects them all. Each of these worlds are each unique and beautifully created with rich textures and vibrant colouring. Although I would have liked a bit more time spent on some of these worlds that they are created as the main bulk of the movie is spent on the Candyland type world. The voicecast is really good with John C.Reilly whose fantastic as Ralph and Sarah Silverman as Vanellope is also great and the relationship between the two is very heartwarming and touching, Alan Tudyk is also fantastic as the villain King Candy and Sergeant Calhoun voiced by Jane Lynch was a total blast with exceptional vocal talent. So on the whole I just found this whole movie highly enjoyable and a hell of a lot of fun, especially if you're into these old arcade games where you will understand all the inside jokes and even if you're not there's still a lot to invest in here, there's just a great time to be had here and so glad it's managed to get a high position here and while it may not suit everybody's tastes, it's still a brilliant movie with a great concept.
